The Future of Games Journalism

Posted by Cole Stryker

...is Dan "Shoe" Hsu and a pair of boobs that just won't shut up.

Dan Hsu is one of those game journos that enjoys an inordinate amount of respect for the few times he's vocally stood up to big publishers, as if that isn't what we should expect from journalists by default. Still, he's better than most of the hacks out there. He and his bimbo girlfriend who calls herself "Raychul" (no, really) are doing a new podcast called the Cut Scene. Sidenote: Why does every video game website/blog/podcast have to name itself after gaming iconography?). It's like every game journalist watched the rise of Yahtzee Croshaw and said, "I gotta get me a piece of that sweet sweet vloggin' pie."

Watch the video and try not to puke.

Tellingly, Dan tells Raychul towards the end, "You're wasting internet bandwidth". Truth.

I didn't know that Shoe had a girlfriend.  I bet he realized that he doesn't have much of a future without an audience so he found himself someone to help promote his word of gaming.  In this case, it is a woman who draws people to him so he can fill their ears with gaming wisdom, aka how Halo 3 is an 11 out of 10.

I wonder if she calls herself "Raychul" because that sorta seems to be her first name. Like, how it's spelled and everything.

Unfortunately, I guess not everybody gets named by '80s action movie heroes, Cole Stryker....

If that is truly how her name is spelled, I rescind my snark and place it firmly at the feet of her ridiculous hippie parents.

I suppose I should mention that my parents once resided on the "Jive Turkey Outdoor Estates", a commune in Wyoming. True story.

John has an astonishingly extensive knowledge of Scientology. Ultimately he would like to learn how to effectively use his brain. He continues to keep Wu-Tang's secret to himself.

Bob Mackey is a grad student, writer, and cyborg, who uses the powerful girl-repelling nanomachines mad science grafted onto his body to allocate time towards interests of the nerd persuasion. He believes that complaining about things on the Internet is akin to the fine art of wine tasting, but with more spitting into buckets.

Joe Keiser has a programming degree from Johns Hopkins University, a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and a fake toy guitar built in the hollowed-out shell of a real guitar. He writes about games and technology for a variety of outlets. One day he will stop doing this. The day after that, police will find his body under a collapsed pile of (formerly neatly alphabetized) collector's edition tchotchkes.

Peter Smith is like the lead character of Irwin Shaw's The 80-Yard Run, except less athletic. He considers himself very lucky to have this job. But it's a little premature to take "jack-off of all trades" off his resume. Besides writing, travelling, and painting houses, Pete plays guitar in a rock trio called The Aye-Ayes. He calls them a 'power pop' band, but they generally sound more like Motorhead on a drinking binge.
