Racial Fetishes

Posted by fishnetsandlight

I've always been kind of baffled by blatant preferences for dating/fucking a particular race. Black guys who only date Hispanic women. Black women who will only date white men. White men who will only date white women, but only enjoy fucking tall asian women on the side. How does something like that develop?

I'm a fairly open-minded person. Probably more so than most. But I have to admit to looking at racial fetishists with the same wary sidelong glance usually reserved for furries.

I can understand really liking a particular physical attribute, and then finding that it tends to inform your dating decisions. If natural redheads really turn you on, for example, there is only one group that produces them. Which makes a kind of sense to me. (Though you could argue that certain preferences are born because of living in a racist society... but whatever.)

But often, when I meet up with fetishists, their attraction isn't even about the look, but focuses on stereotypes about their chosen race. And speaking as a black woman, I can't say that the prospect of being wanted based on the assumptions that I'm a loudmouth and talented dancer with several children of dubious paternity is all that appealing.

But I'd love to hear the other side of the argument? Any racial fetishist in the house?

And failing that... any fun stories about being racially profiled while dating?

There's a redheaded kid at my son's school. His hair is naturally a stunning copper and he's mixed race with a black father and a white mother. I can think of many kids I've seen over the years with the same hair color and the same ethnic mix. It seems that people make assumptions even when they're talking about people making assumptions.

I don't have any preferences as far as race goes, but if you date outside of your own ethnicity, you can bet that others will assign a fetish to you. According to many, I've got a "black thing" for example simply because my last two long term relationships were with black men. When I dated two white men in a row, noone said I had a "white thing" though.

I read somewhere that black people and red head white people have a similar pheremone, hence there seems to be a strong connection between them.

From WIKI:

A person's definition of the 'Other' is part of what defines or even constitutes the self (see self (psychology), self (philosophy), and self-concept) and other phenomena and cultural units. It has been used in social science to understand the processes by which societies and groups exclude 'Others' who they want to subordinate or who do not fit into their society. For example, Edward Said's book Orientalism demonstrates how this was done by western societies—particularly England and France—to 'other' those people in the 'Orient' who they wanted to control. The concept of 'otherness' is also integral to the understanding of identities, as people construct roles for themselves in relation to an 'other' as part of a fluid process of action-reaction that is not necessarily related with subjugation or stigmatization. Othering is imperative to nation-building, where practices of inclusion and exclusion can form and sustain boundaries and national identities. Othering helps distinguish between home and away, or known and unknown. It often involves the demonization and dehumanization of groups, which further justifies attempts to civilize and exploit these 'inferior' others.

You can't spell "fishnetsandlight" without "fetish."

I tend not to pay too much attention to tenuous research about pheromones that was "read somewhere" by someone who can't even spell pheromone...  But, I know with lots of other animals there is some sort of advantage to breeding with those who are genetically farther away -the chances of recessive genetic diseases appearing is smaller.  On the other hand, I know lots of people tend to find familiar faces more attractive than non-familiar faces.  I've also heard a scientist claim that people tend to be most attracted to those who look like they could be a third cousin.  (Wtf?  That would be a huge range of looks...)  In conclusion, I don't tend to buy too much into that stuff one way or the other.

And you won't find a defence of fetishists here (if by fetish you mean people attracted exclusively to one race).  I suppose it would be possible to, say, find dark skin attractive, as simply a preference for the physical characteristic.  I agree that I've heard plenty of white guys who seem to date Asians for stupid, stereotype-based reasons.  And I know black guys who are really hot for white women, and to me that seems to be sometimes about the "taboo" of it or about perceived social status inherent in dating white women.  I feel like guys I know who've been really into black or latina women did it for stereotypes about how their physical characteristics, more than anything.  I think all those things can be creepy, but maybe to varying degrees -but there must be some people out there who don't mind too much, or something...  I think if I was an Asian woman I might never date a white man just because nearly every white man I've known has at some point said something like "Asian women are attractive" and I hope if someone finds me attractive, it's not just for my race, whatever that person associates with the race (I've said no to people for this very reason)

SO if you were with a guy that liked big wide hips, flat asses, no breasts and horrible personalities you would reject him?

such a charmer, you are.  Can't bear being made fun of.  Can't bear women who don't find your thoughts scintillating.  I feel better knowing you're an asshole to many people, though.

I was just asking a pertinent question. As you are a tall, extra wide hipped, flat assed, no boobed, gal with a horrible personality, what if you had the incredible - and Ripley's like - luck in meeting some guy that had a fetish for those characteristics?.. Would you toss the poor joe aside?

Scorekeeper- what are you - keeping score?

Well, I mean, I would assess myself more attractive than you, physically and maybe in terms of personality, though we don't know each other personally so that one is harder, but please, I'm no longer a 16 yr-old girl, do we have to stoop to that level?  I meet plenty of guys who like me for various reasons, I'm just picky.  And I believe we were talking racial fetishes here, anyway, so I feel like you're a little off-topic.

A preference is not a fetish.

I suppose if a someone was so turned on by a particular race that the mere fact of that race inspired sexual excitement -- regardless of whether the object of this desire was young or old, bright or dull, homely or stunning -- it would qualify as a fetish.

May s/he who is without prefences throw the first stone.
