So much potential for actually knowing someone hedges on the chance of surprise first contact. And sometimes it feels like the nervousness and uncertainty of meeting organically (can we coin this phrase already?) are what make people even care about one another. I can empathize with the way you've described bland, unremarkable dates with decent enough women who nonetheless just inspire something like ennui.

It is a great post. People who need to lie about how we met are cowards, and that's an instant turnoff.

Although they saw through it entirely, the lies just got thinner and thinner after 18 months.

I couldn't stand to be judged for it, or for people to have doubts in me and my relationship PURELY because of how we met. I think, for me, it was because the relationship meant so much to me, it was my first serious relationship and I after a time I moved across the country to be with him. I think my friends and family must have sensed this after a while, because they never let on that they knew we had met online.

I suppose I shouldn't have cared about what other people think. In this case I wasn't embarrassed about it, I just didn't need the doubt! I'd moved across the country for the guy, I had enough of my own.

Anyway, great post. I've also wondered how and why "drunken hook-ups" are perceived as more sincere than on line dating.
