Okay,
so Wendy was all like, “Hey, why don’t you write a post about your
favorite gadget to kick things off?” And I was all like, “Sure, easy.”
And then I couldn’t choose between all my babies. It’s like eSophie’s
Choice, or something. Anyway. I’ll stop disparaging well-regarded
cinema classics from now on*, and get to the tech nerdity.
Since
I don’t want to choose one over the other, and this is a getting to
know you period, I thought I’d throw out, in no particular order, the
four gadgets that I currently use all the time. Now, I’m going to give
you a warning, and this should also give you a fair idea about me: I
don’t own the coolest gadgets. I usually own practical gadgets, and
lust after the coolest gadgets/wait until the coolest gadgets get down
to a price range where I won’t have to sell my girlfriend.
That
being said, with all the overwhelming techno-lust us young people feel
these days, it doesn’t hurt to have your wallet temper your heart, or,
in this case, your brain.
Caveat over, list beginning:
- Powerbook G4 15” Laptop:
It makes me sad to say I probably outgrew this about a year ago.
However, there’s no one device I use more than this baby, and it’s
lasted me for at least four years. At 15”, it’s a sizable machine, but
not a brick of death like the 17 incher. At some point soon, I’ll be
trading this in for something will a little more juice under the hood,
but for now, they’ll have to pry this out of my cold, dead hands.
- Palm z22:
I’m not going to lie to you: I hate this thing. I’ve consistently
bought the lowest end Palm PDA available, and since college, have gone
through three. They’re usually around $100, last for a good long time,
and keep my schedule/don’t waste paper. That’s all I need a PDA for,
and that’s all I want it for. However, this current model is slower and
clunkier than even the generation before it. It has a hard time
recognizing Graffiti. Which is ridiculous. If you’re going to invent a
made up language that looks like nonsense, at least make sure the
machine you created that only runs on that language can read it. Lame.
- Sony VX2000:
I do a ton of video editing and shooting, I’ve owned this video camera
since 2001, and it’s only recently started to go a bit bonkers. That’s
some quality workmanship. I know a lot of shooters prefer the
Panasonics, but I like the fact that the VX2000 looks like video, not
muddy video. It’s not HD, it doesn’t have a million fancy modes,
but it shoots really, really well. With more current cameras, the
quality isn’t quite as discernable (in fact, I would say Sony has
fallen behind on price-to-quality ratio), but the VX2000 is a fabulous
workhorse of a machine.
- Nintendo Wii: I’ve had one since last Thanksgiving. Eat it, suckers.
So
that's it... I'd love to hear from you guys, what gadgets you use more
than anything else, and whether you hate 'em or love 'em. More lust
worthy stuff from me as we continue!
*Probably not, to be honest.
