Okay, I have good news, and bad news. The good news is that the largest collection of music in the world is now on sale over on eBay. The bad news is, it’s all Spice Girls records.
Totally JK, guys. It’s actually every single major recording from the past sixty years, on 3 Million Records and 300,000 Compact Discs. The collection costs over $50 million, but the starting bid is a lowly $3 million. And more good news: As of the publishing of this post, you could be the very first bidder.
So what do you get for your small fortune? According to the official website:
Every genre of American music is represented: rock; jazz; country; R&B; blues; new age; Broadway and Hollywood; bluegrass; folk; children's; comedy; Christmas, and more. No other collection in the world – publicly or privately held – even comes close. More than half of the recordings in this incredible collection are NEW, with individual records worth hundreds or thousands of dollars each on the collectibles market. Covering many decades of music, the collection includes 78's, 45 singles and EP's, LP's, and CD's. While there are an estimated 6 million unique recordings, there are also many duplicates, which can be sold to recoup some of the cost of the collection without diminishing the collection's historical value. Every recording in this amazing collection has been purchased by its owner, Paul Mawhinney, over a period of a half century, and stored in a 16,000 square foot climate - controlled warehouse. Many millions of dollars have been invested in the acquisition and storage of the collection, the estimated value of which is now greater than fifty million dollars.
The nice thing about all this is that the seller is looking for a suitable home, meaning someone who will pony up the cash, then donate to a library or museum. However, he’s also willing to sell of duplicates in his collection, though just not through eBay. To those of you who wish to bid… Good luck. And may I borrow ten bucks? I really want to get the new Kylie album on iTunes. [$3mil, eBay]
