Help Me Pick A Pair of Glasses

Posted by Alex Zalben

For those of you who don't wear glasses, you may not know how horrible this is. Yesterday, while riding the subway, I tried to gently clean them, but instead, immediately snapped them in half.

My vision isn’t so terrible that I wasn’t able to find my way back home, but I do need my glasses to do things like, you know, blogging. Luckily, I still have my old pair, though they are way too tight, and have lower prescription than I currently need.

So here’s the deal:

- I need new glasses.
- I want you guys to find me a good pair.

In particular, the big question in my mind is style of glasses. I made a very specific decision to go with the thick rimmed, “I’m alt at this particular time in history,” style when I bought the pair that snapped in half. Now, I don’t know exactly what style to go for.

Here’s a picture of my previous pair of glasses, and post your suggestions in the comments below. I’ll take those to the eyeglasses store, and then we’ll all narrow it down to a few choices. Sound good?

I'm partial to these because I wear this pair every day:  www.opticsplanet.net/picture-1-vogue-vo2436-eyeglasses-frames.html

The good thing is they're comparatively cheap (I got mine at LensCrafters) and even after a year I'm still getting compliments about them.  They don't seem too far off the mark style-wise from your broken glasses.    Whatever you choose, I vote for more plastic frames.  I'm morally opposed to wire-rims.  It's just a thing I have.

Ummmmm, I just realized you're a dude.  So you can totally disregard my post.  Sorry.  Wire-rims are ok.  Vogue frames for women, not so much.

Hmm... Honestly not crazy about the half rimless style, I alwasy think it looks weird on my face. BUT, in the interest of experimenting, I will try at least one of 'em, and post it up as a choice.

And no, sadly, afellowgirl, I'm not a lady. Those are cool glasses, though.

If you're a total cheapskate (like me) you can buy $30 glasses (that don't look bad at all) from optical4less.com.

@MC: Those LA Eyeworks glasses ARE pretty cool...

The place I usually go to is Eyes on Broadway. They have a good selection, and the craziest part is that even I go in once a year or so, they always know who I am. It's weird.

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance writer and proofreader who has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press, Playgirl, and other bastions of fine writing. She maintains a professional site http://www.stephiswrite.com, and also blogs about freelancing over at Freelancedom. You can keep up on her day-to-day by visiting her Twitter page.

Diana Vilibert is a freelance writer, among other things. Born in Lithuania, she now lives in New Jersey, where she doesn't have to walk to work ten miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. Diana cannot afford most of the products she writes about because she buys too many pairs of heels to make up for her shoeless childhood. She's written for MarieClaire.com, Janemag.com, and CosmoGIRL!.
