  • Best of Etsy: Birth Control Case

I HATE being on the pill. It makes me cranky, moody, and fat and it's just the worst. I think it's totally unfair that women hold the brunt of responsibility when it comes to birth control in longterm relationships and the fact that the pill is the least evil of all my options pisses me off even further. Did I mention the pill makes me CRAZY MOODY?! Last night I picked a fight with Drew because he was watching too much baseball and wouldn't let me watch The Real Housewives of NYC. "Why can you watch 4 hours of baseball five times a week and I can't watch one Real Housewives of NYC marathon just once?" I wailed. And now that I think about it, um, I'm kind of right, right? But regardless of who was right (me), the whole issue probably didn't warrant hours of tears, which I am ashamed to admit was sort of the case. (But, seriously, I was right, wasn't I?). At any rate, I think it might be time for me to switch to a lower-dose pill at the very least, and maybe get this while I'm at it:

  • I Can See You in a Moustache

Sometimes it’s nice to think about what your life would be like if you were a different person. The toughest thing about that, of course, is figuring out just what you would look like. If you could picture yourself as a dapper gentleman, or a hardcore thug, perhaps you could see what your life would be like in those circumstances? Unless, of course, you are already a dapper gentleman or hardcore thug, in which case, this post isn’t for you.

Find out who this post IS for, after the jump...

  • Best of Etsy: Paraphernalia

    [$22, Etsy

Sometimes a girl just wants to make a statement — so she wears glittery eye shadow, a bold patterned dress, a pair of killer heels...or a big ass parrot around her neck. The parrot isn't the only creature the fabulous etsy store, Paraphernalia, has made into jewelry, and they don't always stick to critters, either. Want an anatomica heart necklace? How about a ribcage? Or perhaps you just want something colorful and pretty (that can make a statement, too!). More pics and links after the jump:

So maybe you can't bottle happiness, but you can definitely wear it on your ears as Poppigirl's birthday cake boom earrings prove.

  • Retro Arcade: Megaman 2 Scarf

Etsy user Beatboxtaun, previously of the totally awesome Punch Out scarf, has created a paean to classic game Mega Man 2, but in neck-warming format. This particular item doesn’t feature the Mega Man himself, so much as his adversaries. However, if you’re looking for some villainy wear for your neck hair (forced rhyme, I know), then look no further.

    [$150, Etsy]

  • Retro Arcade: Tetris Pillows

Anyone else confused that the best geek stuff consistently comes from Etsy? Anywho, Etsy user sequoiam has made a set of old school Tetris pillows that lock together in different combinations.

Sadly, the pillows do not disappear once a row is made, and you’ll probably have to hum your own Russian-esque music. We’re just not there in the technology yet, people.

Pricing, and some more pics, after the jump…

  • Retro Arcade: Space Invaders Scarf 2.0

Ah, yes. Here, at the end of the winter, you would think a scarf would not be necessary. “But my neck is warm,” you might say.

    WELL YOU ARE WRONG.

    1) It’s still pretty f-ing cold out.
    2) This scarf is a Space Invaders Scarf.

And, it’s pretty cute. And felted! I don’t know what that means, but knitters I know tell me that’s a good thing.

  • Best of Etsy: Half Awake to Joom

    [24, Etsy]  via Modish

I'm in the middle of a rather stressful situation and the other day I had a minor panic attack wherein I thought the whole world was crashing in on me. It wasn't, of course, and once the attack passed and I was able to see my situation with a little more perspective, I realized I'd completely blown things way, way out of proportion. Sort of like the people in the Half Wake series by Erin Tryner. Through miniatures posed in different environments, the series evokes the sense of wonder, loss, turbulence, and serenity that the external world often reflects of our own internal worlds. Also, they're really cool to look at. More great Etsy finds after the jump.

  • Best of Etsy: Lucia, Modica, and Garnish

    [$20, Etsy

I've been a fan of Lucia Johnson's for awhile and if I knew artspeak, I'd talk in sweeping terms about how her work evokes a sense of sublime absurdity. But I don't know artspeak, so I'll just say that when I look at her work, I'm reminded of that moment at a party when the ice breaks and all the possibilities of the evening are brought into vivid focus. • Retro Arcade: Super Mario Quilt

You know, if I was the type of guy who liked sitting on the couch playing video games under a super warm quilt, I wouldn’t look any further than Etsy user CarolinaPatchworks’ home made Super Mario Bros. – The Hidden Quilt Level.

Depicting Mario perched precariously on a pipe, facing off against a deadly turtle, and even deadlier Goomba, I would know that I had found true comfort and warmth.

Yet another awesome video game quilt, after the jump...

  • Tote Bag Makes Robots Cry

Hey, I don’t need a bag to tell me to go f*ck myself, but I may need a bag to tell other people the same. Enter Etsy user RedPaperRecord, who has created the perfect black tote bag to tell people what you think about them, without them having any idea what you’re talking about… Unless they’re a robot.

And that’s because the bag says "F*ck You" in binary! Robots speak binary! Get my joke?

Though I’m going to guess the bag will be sold out by the time you read this (there’s only one of them available), RedPaperRecord is happy to print the lovely little message on a shirt, or in a different color.

May I suggest requesting a computer cosey? And if you don’t like that suggestion, you can go 01100110011101010110001101101011001000000111100101101111011101010111001001110011011001010110110001100110.

  • about the blogger

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance just-about-everything, with a special fondness for home goods she can't afford. She has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press and Nerve. She runs the blog selfhelpme.net, and her work can be found at stephiswrite.com.
