    My Packing List:

    • my fuzzy pajama pants, and tank top
    • toiletries, including my travel toothbrush
    • vibrator
    • hair dryer (I'm never satisfied with the hotel hair dryer)
    • a book that i'm in the middle of, another book in case I finish the first book, and a book of crossword puzzles
    • too many pairs of shoes
    • etc.

Nicole of Making It Lovely handles her packing a bit differently:

  • Back To School

Most of us are just thinking about spending three days not at work over Labor Day. But others of us are thinking about something even more dreadful: getting ready to go back to school. For those of you who have to deal with this tragedy, I give you this:

  • Somebody’s Getting Married

Okay, so the cat is out of the bag (so to speak) about the fact that I’m getting married at the end of the Summer. The reason I’ve been hesitating even mentioning this is that commenters have occasionally ripped Steph and/or Wendy a new one for the very idea that they might have significant others, so I’d have to imagine you’d come and burn my house down if I told you I was getting hitched.

In any case, bring the torches, cause over the next few months, I’m going to share some tips and tricks I’m learning along the way to getting married.

Tips and tricks, including how to make the above picture, after the jump...

  • Perfect on Paper

I know that, essentially, everything we post on this blog carries our stamp of approval, but I’m going to extra-personally recommend the gorgeous designs of Brooklyn based designer Perfect on Paper.

Having experienced first hand the perfect and unique service of this one woman paper machine, I can say definitively that her designs for wedding invites, baby announcements, and really, anything you can think of that can be put on paper, are completely striking, fun, and one-of-a-kind.

So how do I know from personal experience? Well, there is this, which I just picked up:

  • Draw Your Tomorrow

2008 started out a bit slow for me. I'd still just been in New York a handful of months, was very under-employed, didn't have many friends, and was too cold and broke to go out much. But. oh, how things change!

  • Cheap Trick: Lick and Fold

It's cheap, easy, and likes to be licked. It's also a throwback to a age when people took a little more time expressing sentiments to one another. Most of all, it's just pretty cool. Find out what it is after the jump.

  • Cheap Trick: Book of Postcards

I love the melancholy of Jordan Crane's artwork, and with this book, there are 30 Crane postcards (for less than ten bucks!) that can be framed and hung, or sent to friends. When was the last time you sent someone a postcard just because? Come on now, just because we've all got 7 email addresses doesn't mean we don't still love a little postal love from time to time.

  • Papered Together

The letterpress coasters from Papered Together are so fresh and whimsical, if they were human, they'd be that girl in high school I only wish I could have been more like: polished, put-together, sweet. That girl never had a bad hair day, that girl always magaged to befriend all the other girls even as their boyfriends secretly pined for her adoration, and that girl made straight-A's and was artistic and athletic. Actually, I sort of hated that girl. But I don't have these coasters. So I guess in the end, they're really nothing alike. Except for the pretty part.

  • Eye Candy with Which to Pass the Time Away

    [$18, SusyJack

Sometimes, the slow, inexorable passing of time can be more than a waiting game. Sometimes, as in the case of this mini calendar over at SuzyJack, it can also function as wall art.

The calendar will arrive in your mailbox like this:

bound with a set of screw posts at the top, but if you unbind them,

you can have all sorts of fun with placement! Of course, there's no room on them to write in Monday's early-morning dental appointment or Friday night's happy hour, but if you have trouble keeping track of your days merely because you have the awesomely luxe situation of working from home, where day seems to bleed into day effortlessly, they can come in handy. And look pretty while doing it. Sort of like Charlie's Angels or Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider.

  • Quick Tip of the Day: Pocket Notebooks

The other day I was trying to coax my boyfriend into cleaning up some of his clutter around our desk. "You've got all these receipts and mail and crap out--can't you just put it away somewhere?" I asked. And he told me he had to leave the stuff out to "remind him" to deal with it, which sounded like a real load of crap to me. That's what a to-do list is for! Get a little pocket notebook (I love the collections at Galison), write stuff down that you need to remember to do and put all the stuff away so it stops bugging your girlfriend so much. Not only will writing stuff down clear the clutter on your desk, it'll clear the clutter in your head. Not into flowers and patterns and girly stuff on your notebook? Get a moleskine. Get with it!

    [$5, Galison] [$10.45, Moleskineus]

  • about the blogger

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance writer and proofreader who has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press, Playgirl, and other bastions of fine writing. She maintains a professional site http://www.stephiswrite.com, and also blogs about freelancing over at Freelancedom. You can keep up on her day-to-day by visiting her Twitter page.

Diana Vilibert is a freelance writer, among other things. Born in Lithuania, she now lives in New Jersey, where she doesn't have to walk to work ten miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. Diana cannot afford most of the products she writes about because she buys too many pairs of heels to make up for her shoeless childhood. She's written for MarieClaire.com, Janemag.com, and CosmoGIRL!.

Shaun Seneviratne is a dude just like anyone else. Just your average guy that raps Bone Thugs-n-Harmony to strangers on the subway at 4 a.m., doesn't chew his food because he believes it's a waste of time, and sleeps next to a scale replica of the Ghostbusters headquarters. He can rest easy knowing Egon, Peter, Ray, and Winston have his back. He currently lives in northern New Jersey, plays bass in Rapid Cities, and recently started a tumblr.
