Mainly because there’s way more geeky products out there than old school arcade stuff, but also because I need a place to just, you know, hang and be myself. You know what I’m talking about my fellow Geek-burgers.

In any case, let me know what you think… If you guys were digging the retro stuff*, I’ll bring it back. But otherwise, get ready to… Geek out!

To kick this off, I’m totally digging this Nintendo family tree shirt by NerdyShirts… It depicts every single iteration of the console, from the Famitsu, to the DS. I also really like the fact that’s very light and subtle, while still being pretty complex. So from far away, it’ll look like you’re wearing a haute couture t-shirt**, but up close, you look like a super smart video game historian. Two missions accomplished!

If you really want to get fancy, take a red pen, and put a check mark next to every iteration of the NES you’ve owned at some point in your life. I’m not sure if it’s awesome, or sad, that my version of this shirt would be one big red check-mark.

Here's a close-up:

[$20, NerdyShirts]

*And no worries, I’m still going to post retro stuff here. I know you were all worried. Right?

**Yes, I totally know what haute couture is, and how it involves t-shirts.

Retro Arcade: Space Invaders 30th Anniversary Pillows

For got about Space Invaders 30th birthday, didn’t you? I currently have the entire wall of my living room covered in books, two walls of my bedroom, and an entire closet, all packed to the brim with reading material. I’ve actually stopped buying books, because there’s no place for me to put them. So I certainly don’t need any more shelves.

However, these are pretty kewl. This shelving unit consists of 10 separate sections that can be locked together, or left separately. Pictured above, they’re together, of course. But you can make ‘em float, have the bottom linked together, and the top still “falling,” or whatever combo you want. You can even link ‘em together in a 3-D design to use it as a temporary wall.

The shelves come in a number of colors and designs, with several different backing colors, so there’s pretty much something here for everyone.

[$1500, Brave Space Design]

[Via Kotaku]

Retro Arcade: Space Invaders Journal

Dear Diary,

It is the third day since the aliens attacked our planet. They came in one slow wave first, moving from left to right across the sky. We were able to maneuver our defense turret to take some of them out, and were hopeful we would be able to repel these space invaders.

We were wrong… They keep coming, row after row of alien ships. They’ve already destroyed one of our four houses, which gives us fewer places to hide.

And there’s something… We’ve noticed above the line of ships. A faster ship that we think is the mothership. My hope is that we can shoot it down and end this war. To that end, I’ve offered a large bonus to whoever can destroy it.

I pray to god I will be able to write soon about how this war is over. I must go, the troops need all the help they can get. It seems the more we destroy… The faster they get.

Sincerely,
Taito Midway

[$6, Etsy]

Retro Arcade: Megaman 2 Scarf

Etsy user Beatboxtaun, previously of the totally awesome Punch Out scarf, has created a paean to classic game Mega Man 2, but in neck-warming format. When I do find the opportunity to do so (and gosh, I hope it presents itself soon), I doubt I’ll go the wacky route. Most likely, I’ll go for the traditional cufflink experience. It’s like going to a new pizza place for the first time: you want to try the cheese slice to get the sense of the place, not skip ahead to the rigatoni cheeseball supreme*.

For those of you tired of the same old cufflinks day after day - especially those who have an old school arcade fetish – you may want to check out these home-made Pac-Man cuff-links. How many more things can I hyphenate in a row? We’ll see!

But back to the topic at hand… You can get two Pac-Men, or two ghosts (I’m assuming these are Inky and Blinky) made of sterling silver. Or, you can mismatch Pac-Man with a ghost, and have them battle on your wrists. Your choice! Either way, they'll be sitting in a sea of flavored sugar crystals, apparently.

Here's another pic of the Pac-Man cuffs**, to whet your appetite:

[$48, Etsy]

[Via Geeky Gadgets]

*I have no idea what this means.

**In high school, they called me "Pac-Man Cuffs," because I totally did it with a dude and Pac-Man at the same time.

Retro Arcade: Tetris Pillows

Anyone else confused that the best geek stuff consistently comes from Etsy? I guess I didn’t play the game enough, so maybe I’m wrong about that…

Regardless, this welcome mat has a row of flickering aliens that light up as your friends (or mailman) approach your front stoop. This is why I’m annoyed about these Joystick Junkies shirts… They’re actually pretty cool.

The above hoodie shirt looks like any other designer. Prickie designer Augenbluten has created 37 designs, most of which feature old school game controllers (and some modern ones). The deals are pretty good, too: if you head on over to Prcikie, you can get free shipping on orders of six or more; a free pin for every twelve ordered; and order thirty-two, and you’ll get a double order of pins. God I love Blinky.

[Via Geeky Gadgets]

Retro Arcade: Punch-Out Scarf

[$175, $75, Etsy]

How better to stay warm than with Little Mac and the original ear biter himself? Etsy user Beatboxtaun has created a one of kind Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out scarf for the Nintendo lover in all of us. And if I had almost $200 to spend on a scarf, I would grab this in an instant. Luckily, I'm a magnanimous sort, and will leave it for you, the Materialista, to purchase.

Not a big Punch-Out fan? No worries, Beatboxtaun has you hooked up, especially if you prefer things a little more on the Mario side. Take things one-up with this Super scarf:

I’m sure it will make you temporarily invincible against the cold, or, at least, let your warmth grow twice as large. Created by designer Martin Žampach, these flexible ice cube trays would dispense... Well, technically, I guess still cubes... In the form of the shapes that continue to haunt my dreams. There was a time when I would close my eyes and see Tetris blocks falling. Now, there could have been a time when I could OPEN my eyes, and see sweet, delicious Tetrice cubes falling into my frosty drink... But no. With the sole exception of Frogger, which I can totally HOUSE, I generally am very, very bad at everything from Joust to Pac-Man to Q-Bert. Especially Q-Bert. There’s something about pushing your joystick left to go on a diagonal that just never quite clicked with me.

And yet… The 150 Classic Game Tabletop Arcade from Hammacher Schlemmer is completely lust-worthy, even given its hefty price tag (which I’ll get to in a second). The unit is 24" H x 22" W x 24" D., and weighs a child-like 65 lbs.* Beyond the 150 game list, it can also play just about any PC game, and has provided jukebox software, so you can load it with your own mp3s. Though given the delightful joy of eight-bit sound, god knows why you’d want to play Paperboy while listening to T-Pain.

Actually, that sounds pretty fun. Never mind.

I’m not going to copy the 150 game list here**, but let’s just say it contains the best game ever (Gauntlet), and the worst (Dragon’s Lair, a game which inexplicably had no instructions on how to play it, and even more inexplicably, I kept plugging quarters into).

As mentioned, the unit will run you a bit pricey, but it's certainly cheaper and smaller than any full sized arcade you'd pick up. And with 150 games? Well, it's like you're SAVING money. [$2,495.95, Hammacher Schlemmer]

[Via Nexus404]

*In this case, the term child-like literally meaning, “similar to a child,” not, “full of wonder.”

**Aw, who am I kidding? I know, in general, you need to remove laptops and other electronic devices from your bag. But I’ve sent my PSP through the X-ray doohickey plenty of times with no problems.

This is ignoring, of course, the fact that he had 40 Playstation games in his back-pack that he was taking on the plane with him.

I wanted to ask him… Something… As a way of explanation, but no question made sense to me:

- “Like Playstation, huh?”
- “Airports, am I right?”
- “WHY DO YOU HAVE SO MANY PLAYSTATION 2 GAMES IN YOUR CARRY-ON???”

Anyway, I asked nothing, and now, that man has left my life forever. This is Craigslist Missed Connections, right? No? It’s a blog? So what’s my point?

My point is, the above back-pack would have been TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE for the guy I saw at the airport. However, for us old school Nintendo fans, this is the perfect back wear to proclaim your geeky allegiance to Mario and pals. Plus, it’s big enough to hold your entire NES, plus 40 cartridges to take on the plane with you.

Hey, if you fly first class, you can even plug it in. [$40, 80tees.com]

*You know, just hanging out? I called my parents, because the last time I was camping, I was also wearing swaddling pants*, and after a fair bit of searching, they managed to track my old bags down.

“We have your Eastern Mountain Sports sleeping bag, it’s still in good condition,” said my mother.

“Oh good,” I said.

“We also have your Star Wars sleeping bag,” she added.

“Oh really,” I asked non-chalantly. “How big are they? Are they kid sized? Or adult sized.” Please note that, at this point, I was asking about both, but I really wanted to know about the Star Wars bag.

After checking, my mother replied that the EMS bag was still fine for an adult, and the Star Wars bag was too small. I ended up picking up the EMS one, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t want to try uncomfortably squeezing my body into the Star Wars bag.

In any case, I’d say, learn from my example, and don’t follow it. If you heart cries retro, follow your heart. That’s why, come June, I’ll be picking up these killer 30th Anniversary Space Invaders towels. I’ll be the coolest kid in school, no doubt:

Measuring 120cm (47.24") in length and thirsty, the cotton towels come in three varieties but we're partial to the white one decorated with menacing red invaders. If we were goaded into choosing a second one, we'd probably nab the one on the right of the product photo.

The three varieties are as follows
A) Black Towel with multi-colored invaders (top-left of photo)
B) White Towel with crimson invaders (bottom-left of photo)
C) Black Towel with Space Invaders logo and 30th Anniversary background (right of photo)

They’re available for pre-order, and as mentioned, will be delivered straight to your beach house in June. [$20, NCS]

*Possibly an inaccurate statement.

[Via]

Retro Arcade: Pac-Man Coasters!

For those of you who refer to vitamins as “power pellets,” and whisper “bonus points” every time you eat a pretzel, it’s time to grow up already… With these six Pac-Man coasters from Etsy user Lost Mitten.

The bead created set features everybody’s favorite living pie chart, as well as his arch enemies, Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde.
