What you see above is the Monsanto House of the Future, which was on display at Disneyland from 1957-1967. Though it may not be there anymore, if it was, I bet I know what kind of TV stand would be on display inside:

Like Twin Peaks? Then you'll love these sneakers:

They've got the blue owl, blueberry pie colors, "black as moonless winter night" coffe black suede, plus many more small features. They're not cheap, but then wrapping yourself in plastic and talking backwards in your own Twin Peaks sneakers is an experience you can't put a price on. Thanks to Jodi for the tip!

In this case, it's a British television show called Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, and here's several reasons why you must buy it:

1) If You Love Twilight Zone: Or Amazing Stories, or any horror/scifi
anthology show, you will love this. The conceit is that Garth Marenghi,
a sort of British Stephen King, created a show called "Darkplace," that
was never released on television. In it, he explored the spooky goings
on at Darkplace County Hospital, brilliant depicted by the world's
worst scale model. Each episode has a different "scary" premise,
brilliantly skewering the tropes of the horror anthology genre.

2) If You Love Christopher Guest: If you're a fan of Waiting for Guffman, or Best in Show. Or really, if you like any depiction of earnest people putting a lot of energy into something that isn't really worth their time... And then they do it badly.

3) If You Love Things That Are Good: Seriously, this is masterfully done comedy. There have been a million terrible YouTube videos like this, and even movies that try to hit this aesthetic. I watch a ton of comedy, and let me say that this is probably the best example of it's kind, ever. Hilariously funny, and extraordinarly well done.

Sadly, the DVD is only available for Region 2 players; but you should be able to order, and watch in yout computer, switching the region at least one time.

[£13, Amazon.co.uk]

Armani and PAVV TV have teamed up wtih Samsung to release two, high end televisions. The 46" set will retail for $7000 while the 52" will go for a sleek $8750... Though both only in the South Korean market.

There’s a clip making the rounds from the Mike & Juliet Show (a syndicated morning show, seen in NYC on Fox) where, during a segment about binge drinking, a picture of a cat eating spaghetti was inexplicably played. The clip was picked up by E!’s the Soup, and has been making the rounds. I’ll post the clip below, but guess what?

The picture was totally, one hundred percent played on purpose, and I’ll tell you why:

Talking to an anonymous Mike & Juliet staffer, I found out that the spaghetti cat was originally from a segment on their Pet Talent Show. This particular cat ate spaghetti with a fork, but when the cameras were on, it completely froze up. This made the people working there laugh… A lot.

Cut to several months later. The staffers were talking about the Dump Button.

Explanation: The show is on a five second delay in the event something goes wrong; a lawyer sits in the control room, and in the event something does happen, will hit the button, which cuts the audio, and goes to a different camera.

Normally, when they hit the button, it would cut to a shot of Times Square, or the audience. The staffers thought it would be hilarious to cut to the shot of the Cat Eating Spaghetti, and, when the girl in the segment cursed, that’s exactly what happened.

So… This “complete mess-up” is actually an in-joke that was revealed to world. And, if this anonymous staffer is to be believed, there’s a ton more Secret Spaghetti Cat stuff on the horizon, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, so this actually makes sense on this blog, you can buy Spaghetti Cat T-shirts:

[$15, Cafepress]

And, as promised, here’s the clip from The Soup:

And, the some bonus material of Spaghetti Cat clip about a minute and a half into this video.

1) It's Hilarious: Like, really, laugh out loud hilarious. I hate interacting with people on airplanes, but I watched this on the way out to San Diego, and was laughing so hard, I had to explain to people what I was watching.

2) If You Like Shaun of the Dead: You'll like this, is the end of that sentence. Simon Pegg stars, Edgar Wright directs, Nick Frost is in it, and the ludicrously talented Jessica Hynes co-stars and co-writes.

3) It's The Geekiest: You really have no idea how geeky it is until you watch it. Let's just say if you get all the references (the non-obvious ones), you're as geeky as I am; but not as geeky as the guy who got more references than both of us.

I seriously can't recommend this highly enough.

Stupid me, I thought, "Wow, I need to try that, that's crazy. People are drinking blood substitutes now?" Turns out, this is what's going on:

It's more complicated than you might expect, but since it's your first time, I'll walk you through it, nice and slow:

1) Sign up for a Showtime VIP account. This takes about one minute.

2) Here's the annoying part: go back to the Showtime page, and click the exact same link you did before. It'll prompt you to sign up for wireless alerts about being a Showtime VIP.

3) Once you accept that, you'll get a barely perceptible link to the first two episodes of Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

That's it! Enjoy the show... I haven't watched the episodes yet, but it got pretty good reviews, and is a big hit in the UK, so that's going on.

An Open Letter To ESPN, re: Gadgets

Dear ESPN,

I know that you and I don’t have the best relationship. However, what I do think I’m qualified to talk about is gadgets… And I’d like to ask you to stop making them.

I understand on a certain level it makes a lot of sense. You’re a sports network with an audience of dudes who like to spend money on stuff, from season tickets, to sportswear, and more. So why not extend your brand, and create products that help feed your fans addiction to sports, as well as your bottom line.

However, I want you to look at the success, or lack thereof, of the ESPN cell phone. Massive launch. Massive advertising campaign. End of the day, nobody wants a phone that only really tells them what’s going on over at ESPN. If you have a user savvy enough to understand how to navigate and use video coded for mobile content, which, at this point, in America, is a precious few people, there’s not much of a chance they’re going to want to limit what they are viewing. Especially since ESPN is available on non-proprietary mobile devices. But then, you know all this, as you scrapped the ESPN Mobile service, right?

So why, then, are you releasing The Ultimate Remote, which is essentially the same device as the ESPN phone, but without the pesky phone features?

Again, I do understand where you’re coming from. It’s a fun idea, and there is a possibility it will catch on. Basically, you’re banking that most sports viewers don’t need sports info on the go, they like it in their primary place of sports info intake: the couch. So you built a remote that has access to ESPN.com for real-time stats and scores; the ability to text message friends, directly from the remote; and even a feature where you can shop, from the remote. Oh, and you’re releasing it right in time for father’s day.

But I think you’re going to run into the same problem you had with the phone… If you have a fan, sitting down to watch a game, they’re either getting updated scores scrolling on the bottom of the TV already, or near a computer, where they can easily check the scores, or, you know, don’t care.

As for the text messaging thing, if I’m already the type of person who texts during a game, I’m not going to spend time transferring my phone contacts over to a remote control, when I can just as easily text from my cell phone.

As for the shopping thing… Really? I’m going to spend time shopping on my television remote? I don’t even think I need to get into this one.

And finally, there’s the price-tag… $300 for a TV remote I’m probably going to loose in the couch anyway?

Now, listen, ESPN. I know this has been a tough letter to read, and an even tougher pill to swallow. If I’m wrong, and this Ultimate Remote takes off, I will eat my words. Or this remote. But until then, stick to what you do best: making funny commercials with athletes.

Sincerely,
Alex Zalben

PS Please send details on how to get a test version of the Ultimate Remote to modernmaterialist@nerve.com, it looks awesome, and I'd love to play with it.

[$300, Amazon]

HBO Shows on iTunes... As you can see from the picture above:

1) I have some names for play lists in my iTunes I would rather not explain.
2) HBO shows have been added to iTunes.

For those of you who have tried to go out and but a DVD for a show on HBO, you’ll very quickly learn that the second season of Rome is only $100. Not even getting into the $50 for a half season of Sex and the City. It’s not TV, it’s a home loan, am I right, people?

Anyway, they’ve finally seen the light, and added six shows to the iTunes store: The Wire, Flight of the Choncords, Rome, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Deadwood. Each episode is… Well, okay, they’re $2.99, versus $1.99. But that means a season of Rome is only $35, which is almost a third cheaper than buying the DVDs. It’s progress.

[iTunes]

More! And the trailers all tell you that Scarlet has this big secret, and that it will premiere on ScarletSeries.tv on April 29th. Well, that’s today, and guess what Scarlet’s secret is?

She’s a television.

Yup, you just got viral marketed at, a-hole. Ha! Gotcha!

Seriously, this is totally the most annoying thing ever… I understand that LG thought they were being clever when they hired David Nutter, who has directed more TV pilots than anyone else to film a commercial for their new television. And when you watch the trailer again, they are playing a relatively clever game:

- They never refer to Scarlet as a person.
- They say Scarlet will change TV forever.
- The character we think is Scarlet says, “The evidence is staring you right in the face.”
- They even show you the new TV in the trailer.

But, let’s just say when you’re kind of curious to find out what Scarlet’s secret is, and it turns out that there is no secret, and no TV series, and LG was lying to you the whole time, that doesn’t engender you to buy a new television from them. In the official press release, they even say the audience, who was gathered expecting a TV premiere were speechless when they literally got a premier of a new TV.

Livid, more likely.

The TVs themselves are fine. They have a 1080p resolution, super fast response time, and range from 32 to 52 inches. In Korea, the price ranges from $1,500 to $5,300. No word on US pricing or availability yet.

Here’s what it looks like, by the way.

[Via AP]

Hands On: Samsung’s 3-D TV

Last night was Samsung’s Spring Fever Showcase, showing off all the products the electronics giant will be hitting the public with in the next few months. Though they plied me with tiny crab cakes, and all the booze I could drink, I stayed on task, and throughout the rest of the day, will give you my impressions of a few of those products.

I want to mention right off though, that the parting gift from this electronics showcase was a regular note-pad. I mean, a really nice notepad, but here I am, taking pictures with my Sony camera, and no-one came up to me and said, “Hey, it looks like your camera is awful. Why don’t you have one of these Samsung cameras, free of charge?” I guess looking doe eyed and sad in the corner doesn’t get you free gadgets? I dunknow, I’m new at this.

Anyway, a little while ago, I posted about Samsung’s 3-D TV. Well, now I’ve got to play around with it, and I can say that it is, without a doubt, pretty darn cool.

First off, all of Samsung’s high-end televisions will come 3-D equipped. There’s a lot of external equipment needed, relatively speaking, including: a sensor for the top of the TV; 3-D glasses; and a PC capable of reading Blu-Ray discs. However, once you do nail down the externals, the set-up is pretty much plug and play.

As you can kind of see from the picture (and boy, wouldn’t it be better if I had a free Sansung camera? Oh well…), certain video games, movies, and more will come equipped with a separate 3-D version that splits the image into two. You then throw on the 3-D glasses, which are much sturdier than the version you get at the movies, flip a switch, and voila, you’re watching images in 3-D.

Another cool feature, which I’m going to call faux-3-D, allows you to take ANY movie or picture on your hard drive, and make it look 3-D. For those of us in the know, you’ll quickly realize that this isn’t really 3-D, it’s essentially one image split into two, and as the 3-D glasses flip their shutter between your eyes, you experience something that is kind of like 3-D views. However, for your parents, who will now be able to view their vacation photos, and films of their grandchildren in 3-D? Awesome.

The one little quibble I have with this, and it’s just a personal one, is that 3-D is very hard to watch if you already wear glasses. I asked the product manager about this, and he seemed at a loss, that there shouldn’t be any difference if you wear glasses or not. Well… There is. In fact, it gives me a little bit of a headache.

However, for the short time that I was able to watch the 3-D images, they kicked ass.

3-D is available on the Series 6 and Series 7 Samsung DLP HDTV's, some of which are already available in stores. Price-points range from a very afoordable $1299 for the 50 incher, to $2999 for the 72 inch monster. You can check 'em all out at Samsung.com.

Sexy in the City

I don't care what you think about the show. I mean, a lot of stuff. The previous occupant had moved out of the country, and just left most of the furniture in her apartment. Turns out, she has really nice taste, and so I ended up keeping most of everything that she left.

This included the one item that is NOT so nice, the TV Stand. I’ve kept it because I didn’t want to bother with buying something new, and it pretty perfectly fits my current TV. But, the door is starting to break off, and the fake wood is chipping, so it may be time to replace the whole thing.

Now, I don’t yet have an HD widescreen TV, although that’s on my horizon as well, so when I’ve been looking at TV stands, sizing them larger than I currently need has been on my mind.

Enter All Modern, which has a number of really sleek and yes, modern looking TV Stands available. In particular, I really like the one pictured above, BDI - Cielo Series TV Stand.

The stand comes in an espresso finish, with almost indestructible, adjustable glass shelves. There’s also ample space for ventilation, and a wire management system hidden in the back of the unit.

It may be time to get rid of that old TV Stand.

[$863, All Modern]

Geek Out: Baltar Is My Homeboy

Hey, you guys know what today is? At 10 PM tonight, Battlestar is back, baby. I’ve previously talked about my undying love for the show, and Sci Fi Channel is pulling out all the stops for the premiere of the very last season.

First off, you can catch the premiere on SciFi.com at noon today. Or you can wait and watch it at 10pm tonight on Sci-Fi. Beyond that? Several websites are shutting down, literally, for the hour of the premiere. Just a black screen directing people to watch the SciFi Channel, instead of surfing their website.

So what does that have to do with you, the Modern Materialist? Well, my friends, I’ll tell you: you’re going to need something to wear while watching the premiere, so why not throw on the Fauxban Outfitters shirt, “Baltar is My Homeboy?”

Unless, of course, you’re some sort of frakkin' Cylon.

[$19, Enclothe]

[Via io9]

Bang & Olufsen’s Touchless Remote

Whenever I want to hardcore lust after audio equipment I can’t really afford, I head over to Bang & Olufsen’s site to gawk at their space-ship worthy speakers. They also make equally mind-blowing telephones, TVs, and other equipment, so it’s not a shocker that they’ve created an absolutely stunning looking touchless remote control.

Except that they DIDN’T create it.

Nope, this was created by two students as their design graduation project, as a prototype for use by Bang & Olufsen. They have, since, made one of these, but no word on if it’ll be available to the general public at extraordinarily high prices any time soon.

Check out a prototype video of it in action, here:

[Via Engadget]

Make Your iPod Larger and Less Portable

The title of this post isn’t completely fair, and to curious to hear what you current gen iPod owners think about something like this. What is this? Well, I’ll tell you.

Hammacher Schelemmet has just released a device that allows you to view video from your iPod on an 8 ½”, 16:9 widescreen, with (as you can see) the iPod snapped into the side. The device also has an A/V out port for connecting to your TV, and two headphone jacks, so you can listen, and also listen with your South Ears. Wink!

So here’s the thing… It’s not bulky enough to be totally hilarious, but I do feel part of the trade-off with getting an iPod in order to watch video is that it is, in fact, tiny video. So to then lug around another piece of equipment seems almost ludicrous.

On the other hand, it’s a nice crisp screen, and it would be good for watching stuff with a friend.

On the other hand… NO! There IS no other hand*!

[$270, Hammacher-Schlemmer]

*Tradition!

Battlestar Galactica Propaganda Posters

I’m allowed one geeky post a day, right? What? All of my posts are geeky? Okay, enough, people, stop riding me! Especially the imaginary people in my head who are chiding me for not posting more couches and silverware sets.

So yeah, I’m a big fan of Battlestar Galactica. The series, for those of you who don’t like things that are good, is an extremely well written and acted exploration of what makes us human. It’s dark, original, and probably one of the best series on television, ever.

Hyperbole out of the way, look at the funny posters!

Think Geek has a bunch of five, officially licensed Battlestar Propaganda posters, each 22" by 17" and printed on heavy 100 pound satin-finish paper. That’s some quality, people.

The posters are alt-y enough that they won’t look out of place next to the vintage Communist Party art on your wall, yet geeky enough to start a long discussion with your friends about which Number Six is hotter.

FYI, the correct answer is President Roslin. It’s a trick question!

[$30, Think Geek]

Where’s The Remote Pillow

Problems with this:

1) How uncomfortable is it to have a pillow that has a TV remote stuck in it? Imagining for a second that the idea is to put the remote in the pillow when you’re done watching TV, and take it out while you’re watching. However, personally, I rarely use the remote while I’m watching TV. I switch on a show, watch it, and then switch it off. Also, this is the point when I usually loose the remote, not between TV watching. Side-note: I may be stupid.

2) Guess how much this cotton and hemp pillow that comes in plain black or white is. No matter how much time you spend coordinating it with your outfit, no matter how cute it is, no matter how much stuff you can stow in a tiny place, our feeble male minds will only register it as “bag” and move on.

I’m going to fix this problem for you, right now, with the Hanns Milano TV. Not to make gross generalizations (though, why stop now?), but I guarantee every man in the room will want to check out your TV handbag. The cables “handily” store inside the bag, and the TV has RCA/S-Video inputs, a headphone jack, and speakers.

So that's one problem solved... Now don’t even get me started on shoes. Am I right, fellas?

[$260, HANNSpree]

[Via Shiny Shiny]

Giant Remote Is Un-losable

Remember earlier today when I was complaining about how I’m always losing things? I don’t think I’d lose this remote. You know why? Because it’s BIGGER THAN MY HEAD*. I’ll have to write myself a note to go buy it with my giant pencil, on my enormous notepad.

Fun fact: I live in a novelty store.

[$20, Brookstone]

*Yes, I know some people say, “If my head wasn't screwed on, I’d lose it.” I’m not one of those people. Whether he was waiting for Godot, or buried up to his neck in dirt, Sam Beckett… No, wait. Wrong Samuel Beckett.

I’m of course talking about Scott Bakula’s Sam, the inveterate time traveler who leaped from one body to another, hoping that each leap would take him home. So how better to celebrate this, the weirdest of days, than with a collection of the first four seasons of the best time traveling show until Journeyman*? If I haven't convinced you to buy this set with the mere mention of the name "Quantum Leap," then perhaps you should check THIS out:

I won’t lie to you guys: I cried at the last episode.

[$160, Amazon]

*Seriously. And you spent, like, a lot of money on it? Well, Samsung would like to tell you to go f- yourself, because they just released the world’s first 3-D TV!!!

!!!!

That’s right. An entire paragraph of exclamation points. That’s how excited I am.

The Cannes 450 has the ability to display 3D movies and games by attaching to a (not provided) 3D ready PC. There’s already a partnership with EA Games in the works, so it may not be too long until the whole package is readily available.

It’s currently only available in Korea, but will be hitting US shores in about a month. There’s a 42-incher, for the approximate price of $1,850, and a 50-incher for about $2650. The hilarious catch here is that neither of those units are actually HD, so you’re going to probably want to shell out $4150 for the 50-inch HD model, the Cannes 550. Good luck with that.

You'll also need 3-D Glasses, which retail for about 25 cents per unit.

[Via Aving]
