As the nation surges toward the elections, powered by hope, hatred, or some mixture of the two…it’s interesting to take a trip back in time, to when Hillary was the first lady, and Monica was on her knees…In this essay from August, 1998 (can you believe—almost ten years ago?), Erica Jong takes a look at power as aphrodisiac, and what happens when the nightly news turns into a soap opera. Fave quote: “Worse than f*cking individual women is f*cking the nation.” Not everyone agreed, of course. Check out the fiery feedback section, where readers varied from calling Jong a red-blooded a American to Clinton a “red” Communist. Do you miss the nineties...or has nothing changed?
