As Nerve editor and yellow-shirt wearer Peter Smith says, “Whether you’ve been playing since the '70s or your first time with a controller was when your parents bought a Wii last month, chances are you’ve played a videogame. Now you can enjoy Nerve's writers bringing their usual laser-like critical focus to bear on this most exciting young medium, in our new videogame blog, 61 Frames Per Second. We’re Listening To… John’s iPod

The daily aural experience in the Nerve offices typically consists of one of three Sirius radio stations: Left of Center (indie rock), CBC 3 (Canadian indie rock), or First Wave (80s indie rock). Every now and again we mix it up with a little Pure Jazz because nothing makes you feel tres swank like drinking instant espresso in a deadly silent office with the same four cuts off Birth of the Cool playing too quiet in the background. Today, though, we’re getting crazy with albums off my personal auditory device. The morning kicked off with the Drive-By Truckers’ recently released Brighter Than Creation’s Dark, a slice of country rock so pure it should embarrass the Black Crowes back into semi-retirement. Next up was Common’s Be, still his best work and an album on the short list for best opening tracks of the decade. Right now, we’re working our way through Contents Are’s Through You, an album whose history is almost as rich as the 60s garage rock that make up its track list.

Key tracks for the discerning reader are “Sorry Houston” for the Drive-Bys, “Be” for Common, and “In Trouble” for Contents Are.

Maybe the second half of the day the little sucker will go on random. Nothing spices up the day like abrupt transitions between LL Cool J and videogame soundtrack cuts!

Fearless Nerve staffer John C. hasn’t yet broken out his red satin smoking jacket, or his whiskey of choice (he has been known to do both here in the offices)…but on the randomness that is our office satellite radio, he just cranked up Steve Miller’s good ol’ “Joker.”

This song always reminds me of one certain guy and one certain mix tape from high school, but that is neither here nor there…as it is John’s birthday today. Shake your peaches, John!

Film Review: Jumper

Haven’t decided yet on whether you’ll jump in to…um…Jumper? Or just wondering what the hell a “jumper” is, or what Sam Jackson’s up to of late? Screengrab’s got the scoop:

Here's the score: Jumpers are people that can teleport. Bet you'd like to know how — well, too bad. Paladins are people who have been trying to kill Jumpers "since medieval times." Why? Couldn't tell you. Samuel L. Jackson says that, "Only God should have the power to be in all places." He usually says it as he unwraps a giant knife from some dusty cloth before stabbing a Jumper.

What exactly goes on during a Nerve editorial meeting? Does Scanner goddess Sarah Hepola always bring in personal lubricant disguised as hair mousse (smells like vanilla!)? Sadly, not this week. In fact, she wasn’t even there…she chose to see Lust, Caution, Ang Lee’s sexy new NC-17 flick, instead.

That’s fine, if you’re into artfully-shot, slow-paced sex and ennui. We’re not. What she missed:
Peter Smith is too damn busy to go to tonight’s screening of Cruising. (Too busy to see Al Pacino playing a cop who goes undercover in gay ’70s nightlife? Crisco-covered forearms? Please.) Thankfully Will Doig will report on all things William Friedkin soon…

Sarah Harrison wants to check out the new Perez Hilton and TMZ TV shows. She just has to get a TV first. Motivating her? The new CW super-rich, super-tramp teen soap Gossip Girls. She’s been singing its slutty praises for awhile now. And now other illustrious media bigwigs agree .

Superhero John Constantine wants us all to get cozy in Nerve’s interview room, pour ourselves some Jameson, and talk about behind-the-scenes life at Nerve for Nerve Insider podcasts. Maybe if we drink enough, someone will finally try out the Size of a Man “phallumeasure” their PR company sent to us. Patent-pending, yo.

Today John Constantine and Peter Smith were behind closed doors in the conference room for several hours watching a movie or TV show or wild teens! anal fisting! cause that's what we do at Nerve. (Totally kidding about that last one because I know Pete prefers older women.) But kidding aside, what were they watching? We'll likely find out soon in the film lounge or screengrab...
