MySpace is featuring a new web series called Quarterlife. Made by the creators of My So Called Life, Quarterlife
follows six quarterlifers as they do quarterlife shit like have loud
sex, get crapped on at work, blog, and play table hockey. It probably
goes without saying that we are huge My So Called Life fans.
Like talk about Rayanne and Ricki as though they're real, run home in
the rain to make the opening credits when the car breaks down huge My So Called Life fans. And the new series?
It's
OK, but we probably wouldn't skip game night with Jessica Biel to
watch. Quarterlife
doesn't suck. It also doesn't rock. Blogger Dylan makes a little mess
for herself when she tells the Internet that her roommate is a slutty
alcoholic and her neighbor is in love with her best friend. As people
who tell the Internet things, we can say with confidence that if we
told
you that our roommate was a slutty alcoholic (she isn't!) and our
neighbor is in love with our best friend (again, is not!), we would not
only be out on our asses eating from garbage cans, but our mother
wouldn't
even talk to us (she's in love with our neighbor). So, the fact that
people forgive her and learn about themselves from her "blogging" and
she doesn't end up with any broken bones is kind of unrealistic. Plus
the show is earnest and mopey in THAT WAY where little problems are
totally insurmountable and all-consuming.
But something about Quarterlife
is addictive. The web shows are unselfconscious and while the writing
is in no way outstanding, the videos look good, capture the characters
well, and make us interested in their stories. Plus, we are My So
Called Life junkies and we'd beg, borrow, and steal for even the weakest hit off that rock.
