Holiday Gift Guide: Personal Submarine

Posted by Alex Zalben

Oh, rich people. Always inventing fabulous ways for yourselves to die, aren’t you?

Here’s a brand spanking new one, though, and the perfect gift if you have $1.5 million and absolutely nothing to do with it*: a personal submarine from Neiman Marcus.

Long known as “that place with the over-the-top Christmas gifts,” ranging from a tiger covered in diamonds (seriously), to a private concert with Elton John (also, seriously, but not quite as ridiculous), this year’s gift is an underwater vehicle for one. Here’s the unfortunate news: it’s totally awesome.

Whereas you can probably do without His & Her Mummy Cases (I’m just going to get it out of the way, and say that I’m not making any of these up; they’ve all been Neiman Marcus Christmas Gifts in the past), the NM Gem Triton 1000 is a heart-breakingly cool little machine. It dives to 1000 feet, has 360 views in your little air bubble, is air-conditioned, and comes with two days of training included. Also, there are leather seats, and a gemstone encrusted steering joystick. Because no one will be impressed with your personal submarine if it isn’t encrusted with gemstones.

On the off chance that multi-millionaires aren’t reading this gift guide, there are other options for the undersea enthusiast in your life, including Atlantis Adventures, submarine tours running in Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Guam. Trips cost between $50 and $100, depending on the location. And though you’ll be saving about $1,499,900, you will have to ride with other people. So I guess, weigh your options? (Neiman Marcus) (Atlantis Adventures)

*Though you could always donate to a good cause. May I suggest “Habitat for Nerve Guest Bloggers?”

Emily Farris writes about culture and food for numerous publications and websites you've probably never heard of, including her own blog eefers. Her first cookbook will be published in fall 2008. Emily lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with her cat, but just one . . . so far.

Brian Fairbanks is a filmmaker living in the wilds of Brooklyn. He previously wrote for the Hartford Courant and Gawker. He won the Williamsburg Spelling Bee once. He loves cats, women with guns, and burning books.

Nicole Pasulka is a Brooklyn writer and editor who's always on the lookout for the dirty. Her other virtual home is at The Morning News, where things are squeaky clean most of the time.
