Jamie Lynn Spears: Legal in Some States

We were so caught up with the ridiculousness and media circus that is Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy that we completely overlooked the whole possibility of statutory rape. Jamie Lynn is 16 and her baby daddy is 18. Lucky for them they were probably doin' it in Louisiana, where she lives, or California, where she tapes her show. A mere misdemeanor in either state.

The more serious legal question is: if either is convicted in Louisiana or California, will they then have to register for life as sex offenders?  Sex offender registration -- with names, photos, and addresses posted on the internet and update every few months -- is a much worse punishment than the typical fine.  For that reason, you can expect high-priced lawyering to avoid such convictions, options not available to thousands of Romeos and Juliets around the nation.
