Political Video of the Year: Obama Music Video

Posted by Brian Fairbanks

With 700,000 views, and Super Tuesday mere hours away, could this be the first viral video in history to decide a Presidential election? Will.i.am's new video, composed entirely of snippets from Obama speeches, is directed by Bobby Dylan's son Jesse and features a somewhat bizarre assortment of celebs, from Scarlett Johnassen to some old dude named Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

The whole singing over the speech thing kinda annoys the living crap outta me, but other than that...

UPDATE: Nerve's Video Blog weighs in, and finds it a little creepy

"Some old dude" named Kareem Abdul Jabbar? Are you serious? That old dude is only one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived and is one of the deepest thinkers in all of sport. See, they have this thing on the internets called the google. All the kids are into it, I hear. Do a little research first, young uns. Sheesh!

Yeah, I like Obama and everything, but I find it a little creepy too.  I mean, a pile of entertainment celebrities happily parroting a politician's speeches?  I thought this was the candidate who most encouraged independent thought and dialogue, so this seems like a completely contradictory message to be sending.  Given the vast number of alternative methods of including celebrity cameos in political propaganda, I'm left wondering if this "technique" was simply the result of the writer's strike...after all, there's no need to worry about crossing picket lines if we're just reciting political speeches...

But regardless of how creepy or off-message it may be, it's still nice to see a fellow Canadian in there (Esthero) contributing to "the cause."
