Michael Stipe. Officially Gay.

Posted by Emily Farris

We don't know how we missed this, except that we were suffering from The Plague, but R.E.M frontman Michael Stipe officially came out of the closet Monday, leaving R.E.M. fans everywhere unfazed, while still a little proud of the guy for finally making it happen.

“It was super complicated for me in the ’80s," he tells Spin. "I was totally open with the band and my family and my friends and certainly the people I was sleeping with. I thought it was pretty obvious.”

What was not obvious to Stipe was how coming out could help other closeted gay men and women.

"But I see now, of course, that’s the case," he says. "I’d just never felt strongly enough about a particular relationship to say, 'Yeah, he’s my boyfriend, that is what it is.’

"Now I recognize that to have public figures be very open about their sexuality helps some kid somewhere out there.”

We're not pointing any fingers, or naming any names, but there are a few celebrities who could take a lesson, or at least some inspiration from Stipe. It's not like it's the 80's anymore, RS, CA, JT and TC.

Wow, I haven't been this shocked since Fred Schneider of the B-52s came out of the closet.

Or, for that matter, when Michael Stipe came out as gay in 2001. news.bbc.co.uk/.../1329994.stm

I love REM, but it seems Stipe comes out every time a new album does.  en.wikipedia.org/.../Accelerate_%28R.E.M._album%29

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Read this before you write silly comments-or articles ;)

I didn’t come out in 2001. That’s something that the British press love harping on about. They always have me emerging from a closet that I was never actually in. I simply refused to speak about my personal life to people that didn’t know me. People that know me know who I am and who I sleep with, and that it was across the board.

I was on the cover of Out magazine in 1995. I publicly came out in 1992 or 1993. That’s when I started talking about my sexuality beyond my family and friends. In Time magazine I was quoted saying I was being made to feel like a coward for not coming out. But they left out the date because I was referring back to how I felt in 1992. I’ve been outed by the British press more times than Sinatra sang My Way. The only real “new” news in 2001 was that I was in a solid relationship with a guy.
