Master Debating: Are Nazis The New Cylons?

Posted by Bryan Christian

You know, we're wondering if when they write the book on the erotic themes of our age, they're gonna say this is the year that Holocaust Smut broke wide. Pretty much all that's missing right now is La Lohan announcing she's remaking The Night Porter.

But maybe we should stick to what we actually got for now. First, there's the case of Formula One Racing director Max Mosley, who's under so much pressure to resign following revelations of his 5-hour, 5-hooker, Holocaust-themed freakfest that even NPR is talking about it. And things will probably not get any better now that the News of the World won a court case allowing them to air video of the encounter on their website. (Click here to view.) The most disturbing part? The shots of a naked Mosley sharing a post-coital cuppa with the faux prison guards. (Shudder!)

Then there's the release of Stalags, a documentary about the unsettling but intriguing crop of death camp-themed pulp novels that surfaced in Israel, of all places, following the war.

Ari Libsker’s documentary “Stalags” is named for these pocket-size books, which were written under American pseudonyms in a style that suggested translation. (They were in fact done in Hebrew by Israeli writers, some of whom appear on screen.) The film examines the rise and fall of this short-lived craze and the doors it opened for discussing the Holocaust, a previously hush-hush subject in Israel.

As we mentioned before, we don't really get the erotic appeal of the Nazi, but we have to say, it's looking more and more like this is starting to be a thing, right? With Blackbook and the Günter Grass scandal within the last couple years and Valkyrie soon to come? What do you guys think? Is there now a trend towards humanizing -- even eroticizing -- the Nazis, and if so, why? Is it simply another example of the brownshirtism/Neo-Nazism that occasionally rears its ugly head? An inevitable reaction to the whole "Greatest Generation"/Saving Private Ryan interest of a few years back? Or are we maybe on the edge of rethinking something about WWII and the army that lost it? And whatever the reason -- is it good or bad?

Have at it in the comments -- and remember: this can be a touchy subject, so please play nice or ve vill be vorced to use... discipline. (Well, we'll remove any truly offensive comments, anyway.)

Wow, No Comments...I guess this thread really pulled all the assholes out of the woodwork, right?

I don't think it's that difficult to imagine why people find an erotic thrill in the idea of Nazism...black uniforms, leather boots, torture, discipline, degradation and cruelty? What part of that is difficult to eroticise?

At the risk of sounding unpopular )and getting my comment deleted...ulp) I honestly think the Mosely thing is getting blown out of proportion. If his dad was a leading fascist it would be hard to imagine fascist imagery NOT playing a major role in his fantasy or private life :it couldn't be totally ignored, it would have to occupy SOME part of his identity. Better that he pays people to help hiim exoecise these demons in private than, say he goes into politics and begins actively trying to fuck people's lives up.

It might be tasteless and embarrassing for an upstanding pillar of society to engage in morally dubious sex games, but it was done BEHIND CLOSED DOORS folks. I can't remember who said it first, (anyone know?) but the old phrase about 'There isn't a single one of us whose sex life would not be utterly shocking if publicised' rings true here...he didn't touch any kids and he didn't rape anybody. He played a silly, sick sex game BEHIND CLOSED DOORS with consenting adults who were presumably well paid for their trouble. It's really fucking embarrassing (especially given his background), but we shouldn't all be so quicj to stone the guy.

Well said, danrimage. There's a good LA Times op-ed that makes a similar point; it's something I wish people kept in mind more often: www.latimes.com/.../la-oe-frost11apr11,1,5714616.story

This is not even CLOSE to the first time Nazism/fascism has been eroto/romanticized.

Almost every drawing by Tom Of Finland! Isla, She-wolf of the SS. Humans will erotocize what they fear, in such a way as go recover from their own fears.

I don't see the point of punishing this dude for having fantasies, and that's really all they are doing. I have fantasies, they're tame by the Nazi standard, but they are not vanilla.

this whole discussion is somewhat endless, because it's always oscillating between "nazis" as a historical theme and "nazis" as popular culture mythology.

when someone dresses up as a nazi at some costume party, like prince harry did or when mosley does his thing, (very stupid) people then seem to ask: "oh my god! is he pro-nazi???". this is actually as stupid as asking a kid in an indian costume if he's pro-scalping.

just look at what kind of "publications" jump on that wagon in the 1st place...

what is more "incorrect"... mosley doing silly fantasies, or steven spielberg using fantasy nazis in indiana jones?
