Huckabee Encourages NRA Members To Shoot Obama

Posted by Brian Fairbanks

Correct us if we're wrong, but there are laws against this sort of thing, are there not?

We were in the middle of reading Vanity Fair's story on the pre-assassination campaign of Bobby Kennedy when we heard TV's talking heads jabbering about the inane/insane remarks of one Mike Huckabee. Huckabee would have been, in happier times, jailed on the spot for threatening the President of the United States. Unfortunately, it appears law enforcement doesn't consider "future Presidents" as being protected from said law...

Reports differ on whether or not the audience approved of his remarks. The earliest reports we saw indicated murmuring and no laughter followed the following, which came after a loud thump or bang from behind the stage:

“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.” [CNN]

Doesn't that encourage shooting the Presidential candidate? Especially when you encourage that shooting in front of hundreds of NRA members?! You can bet Huckabee would've hounded Obama with this remark, had their roles in this been reversed, all the way to the inaugural, whereas Obama takes the customary high road and refused comment. (We thought he should've used this as a golden opportunity to drive the final stake in Huckabee's political coffin, but then again, we're not wimpy Democratic operatives.)

More on this at CNN, including video.

Death threats are illegal no matter who they are directed towards, as are statements inciting violence, murder, rioting, et cetera. If Huckabee had said, "I'm going to kill that son of a bitch Obama for trying to take away my guns," or, "let's go kill Obama for trying to take away our guns," he could have been arrested. However, his statement is a suggestion that an NRA member would try to shoot Obama were the senator present at the event, not that they should or that he was going to. You can makes jokes about someone else shooting at President Bush with no fear of reprisal if you like.

Um, Obama is NOT the President of the United States. *** Second, the statement was more ironic than anything, considering no one would ever get the chance to shoot Obama because he's got a small army of armed security guards-- yet wants Americans to all be unarmed and unprotected. Hope my ass. Obama is a socialist pig.

Death threats are free speech.  You do not have the right to shoot someone because they threaten you verbally.  That having been said, "Yo! Mike!  Do us a favor.  DON'T HELP US!"

Yo, JR:

Obama wouldn't need the army of armed security guards if there weren't armed civilians running around everywhere.

And since it doesn't seem like you've been paying attention, allow me to inform you that Obama a) isn't interested in banning guns and b) is a capitalist, not a socialist.  Calling him a socialist makes it apparent that you know nothing about socialism or capitalism, so do yourself a favor and look it up.

Oh, and he's not a pig either, in case you missed that.

Reality Check:

I dare you to go up to a police officer and threaten to kill him.  I think the police officer will me more than happy to to inform you of your rights--and you will find that your rights do NOT include the freedom to utter death threats.  Enjoy your cell.
