New Yorker Reporter Spends Time the California Way-- High on Medicinal Marijuana

Posted by Nicole Pasulka

Harper's and New Yorker contributor David Samuels has an article in this week's New Yorker about the business of growing, distributing, dispensing and smoking medicinal marijuana in the Sunshine State. It is a long article. Apparently, there is a lot of enthusiasm for horticulture in California right now.

We are not from California. We are from the Midwest. We are level-headed, grim and self-effacing. While we think the criminalization of marijuana is completely ridiculous--not to mention hypocritical--we do not smoke pot with names, let alone names like Purple Urkel, Bubba Kush and Lebanese Blonde. Our pot should be the consistency of damp oregano and to give us a slight headache.

That is why, whenever we read or hear about medical marijuana and the infinite strains and varieties floating around California we get a little uptight. We start wondering things like whether Samuels expensed all that $300 an ounce Kush and whether we'd "like" all these pot growers if we met them. Probably they would be a little too carefree and a lot too successful. So while Californians are out there living among nature and feeling all floaty we'll be in a dimly lit bar abusing a drug that's legal in all 50 states and begrudging people on the left coast their fortune and good health...
