As many things as there are to criticize Palin on, she seems to generally be well spoken. While it's true that "themself" is not a word, English doesn't have another word that works in its place. The grammatically correct phrasing would be, "Person would find himself in." That just sounds silly. As much as the media might pretend otherwise, its grammatically incorrect to use the gender specific "herself" when the antecedent is not gender specific. If, in the interest of gender equality, we're looking to replace "himself" as the gender neutral, doesn't it make more sense to establish neuter pronouns like "themself" than to assign gender specific pronouns to uses that have been ungrammatical for the whole history of the language? Some might say that "themself" is an illogical word because of the mix of plural and singular, but think about the already accepted words "himself" and "themselves." "Himself" is illogical; the logical construction would be "hisself." "Themselves" is illogical; the logical construction would be "theirselves."

So, that's my long winded way of saying "themself" has my vote for filling the void left by the lack of gender neutral pronouns for all cases in English.

Mandy - Personally, I wouldn't be gender neutral when discussing abortion. But "person" is gender neutral. Replace "person" with woman, and "themself" with "herself," and you've got yourself a solid sentence.
