Our mom used to tell us about the bridge that connected southern
Florida to The Keys, and we just couldn't fathom the length of it, or
how anyone ever built it. Then we went into a phase of being scared to
death of crossing bridges, looking down on the Missouri river from the
backseat thinking that at any moment Mom's car would bust through the
guard rail and we'd be trapped sinking to the sandy river bottom, our
bodies crashing up against the muddy banks days later. We've since
