According to Slate, downloading "obscenity" on the Internet is
punishable by up to five years in jail. What qualifies as
obscenity?
Materials that "appeal to the prurient
interest," depict "sexual conduct" in an patently offensive way, and
lack "serious literary, artistic, political, and scientific value."
Whoa.
Looks like we are a web savvy Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And you all
are Bonnie and Clyde. But, before we panic and board the train to
Bolivia, it should be noted that these obscenity laws have
fallen into a "deep coma" and are almost never prosecuted. So no one
will be going to jail for that eel sex video we downloaded last
week - although someone probably should.
