If so, then it's true... breakup season has begun... and with it comes a playlist to help you make it through the night...

10. Bob Marley & The Wailers - No Woman, No Cry. Bob Marley's anthemic reggae single from 1974 was actually (allegedly) written by a guy who worked at a local soup kitchen. Either that or Marley wanted to ensure the guy received enough in royalties to keep his charitable organization alive. In any case, it's impossible to not be uplifted by this chorus-- although many have often tried to interpret it. "Does it mean because he has a woman, he isn't crying or what?" Choice lyrics: "My feet is my only carriage/So I've got to push on through/But while I'm gone, I mean: Everything's gonna be all right!" Mood: Ready to embrace life again.

9. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way. From 1977's smash Rumours album, this is the only song on our list written as a breakup song from one band member to another-- in this case, from Buckingham to Nicks. Strangely enough, Nicks knew the song was about her and agreed to sing it... although she asked Lindsay to remove the choice line "Packing up, shacking up is all you want to do" because she never cheated on him. He disagreed or at least didn't want to remove it and the song stands as is. Mood: Venting, prone to leaving epic voice mails.

8. Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel. The biggest song of 1956 is still a great breakup song more than four decades later. It's combo of somber lyrics and an infectuous melody is the perfect combination when you're in the mood for a sympathetic soul and inspiration to go forward. And, of course, it's always worth a listen in any situation. Choice lyrics: All of them, but particularly the opening: "Well, since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell/Its down at the end of lonely street/At heartbreak hotel." Mood: Lonely, in need of a lift.

7. Alanis Morrisette - You Ought Know. We never liked this or any of her songs, especially after we learned "You Oughta Know" is about that douche from that awful Full House show, but you can't argue with the anger here. Or those choice lyrics: "Would she go down on you in a theater?" Sadly, she will not. Mood: If you're the breaker-upper and you're not sure the switch was the best move.

6. Ani DiFranco - Untouchable Face. Maybe it's because of who we hung out with and where we grew up, but it seemed like every girl we went to high school with popped this in their CD player and hit repeat when they got dumped. Those choice lyrics "fuck you in your untouchable face/fuck you for existing in the first place" may have had something to do with it. Mood: Angry, wishing you weren't still in love.

5. Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now. Mitchell's classic folk tune from the late sixties is often interpreted as reflections by a narrator who has seen the two viewpoints of everything in life, but particularly love. At first, she sees love as a fairytale and isn't prepared for the reality, that not everything will be perfect. Once she's reconciled to this, the narrator is finally able to take on a relationship full prepared. Choice lyrics: "I've looked at love from both sides now/From give and take, and still somehow/It's loves illusions I recall/I really don't know love at all." Also: "Tears and fears and feeling proud/To say I love you right out loud." Mood: Reflective and ready.

4. Paul Simon - 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. Not all breakup songs have to be from the point-of-view of a lover. Remember, your friends can hate your ex's, too. Choice lyrics: "Just slip out the back, Jack/Make a new plan, Stan/Don't need to be coy, Roy/Just get yourself free." Mood: Glad you listened to your friends in getting out of that one by the skin of your teeth.

3. Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue. During the mid-seventies, while undergoing a rough period in the relationship with his wife, Dylan lived in New York City and began studying painting. His new-found love of art and his relationship weigh in equally on his 1974 album Blood on the Tracks, which depicts a series of breakups in its songs, all with nonlinear narratives and unfinished portraits of the characters. The obvious example is, of course, Tangled Up In Blue, which shifts back and forth through time, ending with the immortal final stanza and its memorable lyric "Now I'm going back to her again/I got to get to her somehow" and the last lines "We always did feel the same/We just saw it from a different point of view/Tangled up in blue." Thanks to these pleas, he was able to get his relationship going for three more years until he blew it for the last time. Choice lyrics: "And when finally the bottom fell out/I became withdrawn/The only thing I knew how to do/Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew/Tangled up in blue." Mood: Devastated.

2. Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - The Tracks of My Tears. This is the "I don't care about you" song that lets them know that, deep down, you really do care. If you see him with another girl, just remember that she's just his rebound babe and that the one he really wants is you... whenever you're ready to come back around. As Oliver Stone says over a scene featuring this tune on the Platoon DVD commentary: "Humanity is engraved in this music." Choice lyrics: "So take a good look at my face/You'll see my smile looks out of place/If you look closer it's easy to trace/The tracks of my tears." Mood: Not over you, leaving that door open, but on the rebound.

1. Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive. It's hard to imagine that people have made breakup song lists that not only haven't placed this at #1, but have left them off entirely. At least they could've included that funkified Cake cover. Anyway, what can we say about this song that isn't obvious: it's a disco classic, it's a breakup song, and it's sappy and motivational. Choice lyrics: "Oh, as long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive/I've got all my life to live/I've got all my love to give and I'll survive/I will survive." Mood: Tony Cliftonesque.

What are these women going on about? According to Guilia in Italy:

It's an ad for a body lotion that supposedly lifts your tits. The two women are asked their age (one is in her twenties, the other in her thirties), occupation, whether they're wearing a bra ("Of course not!") and whether they've had surgery ("Are you out of your mind?"). And then the interviewer decides to "test" the virtues of the miracle concoction.

Welcome to Italy, where the misogynists run free. If women even tried to complain, we'd be told we're humourless.

They claim a body lotion enhances your bust? Don't they have the equivalent of an FDA there? I mean, can you imagine what American commericals would be like if companies were allowed to say whatever they like, such as "Will.i.am is this generation's Bob Dylan!"

It's not yet "Breakup Season," which one of our ex-girlfriends claim takes place mid-summer, but this morning, we came across a great and epic story about getting over lost love. Read up now, and keep this handy in case D-Day arrives...

Here are the 7 tips for getting over that relationship that almost was. Surprisingly, "cranking up 'Tangled Up in Blue'" or "throwing a television out the window for catharsis" are not among the steps:

You may not know that we're huge, huge Wilco fans. We may or may not have Wilco lyrics tattooed on the back of our neck and Scanner Emily and Scanner Brian may or may not have kind-of sort-of met over a Wilco ticket via Craigslist. We snuck back from camp to see them one night and drove back the same night (6 hours each way). We've even seen them in Amsterdam. If Jeff Tweedy wanted to put a baby in us, we would most definitely let him.

Now, if it's possible, we love them even more, because we also love voting.

Curious About What's on Barack Obama's iPod?

Too bad, we're going to tell you anyway.

Bob Dylan. Yo-Yo Ma. Sheryl Crow. Jay-Z. These aren't musical acts in a summer concert series: They're artists featured on Barack Obama's iPod.

"I have pretty eclectic tastes," the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday's issue of Rolling Stone.

Growing up in the '70s, Obama said, he listened to the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire. Stevie Wonder is his musical hero from the era. The Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tops his favorites from the band.

The Illinois senator's playlist contains these musicians, along with about 30 songs from Dylan and the singer's "Blood on the Tracks" album. Jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker are also in the mix.

"Actually, one of my favorites during the political season is 'Maggie's Farm,'" Obama said of one of Dylan's tracks. "It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric."

In the song, Dylan sings about trying be himself, "but everybody wants you to be just like them."

Luckily for Obama, most of those artists support his campaign.

This is sad, you see, because I happen to be madly in love with Jim James, the lead singer of My Morning Jacket.

I know what you're thinking: burly bearded dude, of course she's in love with him. Yes, yes, yes. But have you heard him sing?

Watch this scene from "I'm Not There" where James performs with Calexico and tell me you're not haunted by his voice.

James recently gave an interview to Paste magazine and had this to say about being single:

Bob Dylan Sees The Chimes of Freedom Flashing

He used to not care, but things have changed.

Bob Dylan, who since the early 60s has rarely spoken about politics and almost never about political candidates, yesterday weighed on the election in an impromptu newspaper interview outside his Denmark hotel.

The singer-songwriter, whose last of many "protest" songs was the 1976 classic "Hurricane" (which followed a decade of mostly non-political material), weighed in with his usual round of cryptic metaphors:

Well, you know right now America is in a state of upheaval. Poverty is demoralising. You can't expect people to have the virtue of purity when they are poor.
But we've got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up...Barack Obama.
He's redefining what a politician is, so we'll have to see how things play out. Am I hopeful? Yes, I'm hopeful that things might change. Some things are going to have to.
You should always take the best from the past, leave the worst back there and go forward into the future...

The Greatest Dive Bars: The White Horse Tavern

Continuing our new monthly feature on this country's finest places to drink to ruin, this time we're featuring Manhattan's White Horse Tavern, home base for many of America's finest gritty male writers, including animated medicine cabinet Hunter S. Thompson and infamous female terrorizer Norman Mailer.

These and other intellectual graffiti grace the hallowed stalls of the White Horse (there's also, if you can find it, a note directed toward the late Jack Kerouac, who drank off and on again till his death from cirrhosis of the liver in 1969, saying kindly, "JACK GO HOME!"

The greatest White Horse Tavern story is actually about Dylan Thomas, the Welsh poet and some believe Robert Zimmerman in disguise, who finished the last day of his life at this very bar.

On 5 November, at the White Horse Tavern, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, when he started to feel ill. He decided go back to his room at the Hotel Chelsea, where he later collapsed and slipped into a coma. An ambulance was called, which took him to St Vincent's Hospital. Thomas died four days later on 9 November 1953 at around 1pm.
The most popular myth is that Thomas' last words were, "I've had eighteen straight whiskies, I think that is a record." [Wikipedia]

While the West Village has become too classy for anything resembling a dive bar to survive, The White Horse nonetheless qualifies for its sheer old age and the presence of regular barflies. Who Would You Rather, Father-Son Edition: Jakob Dylan vs. Bob Dylan?

Before we were fully aware of the genius that is Bob Dylan, we crushed hard on the fruit of his loin, Jakob, the frontman for the Wallflowers (three-hit wonders?). While the Wallflowers are still working toward that fourth hit (hey, we're looking forward to it even if you're not), Jakob has been working on some solo material. And that got us thinking, if given the opportunity, right now, to have sex with father or son, we'd have a pretty tough decision to make.

At first we thought 'no brainer, Bob.' But he often mails it in on stage these days, and you can tell a lot about the way a man will perform in bed by the way he performs on stage. Bob Dylan doesn't have anything to prove to anyone anymore. Jakob, on the other hand, has everything to prove and always will, so he'd probably work extra hard to make sure we were completely satisfied. But would we really pass up the opportunity to fuck fucking Bob Dylan? Shouldn't we jump at the chance to please him even if he just lays there and grumbles "It ain't me, babe, but suck it anyway." Believe it or not, this one is actually relevant, as both men are making music news this week...

First, Jagger was in the news this week because he saved Radha Mitchell from the customs police, jail, and almost certain obscurity (wait, Radha who?), escaped assassination from the world's whimpiest bunch of Hell's Angels, "playing" a Mike Huckabee concert (in which Mick was impersonated by his own brother, somehow), and for all the press on the upcoming Martin Scorsese documentary "Shine A Light," which will hopefully be the first and last movie to ever feature nothing but ninety-year-old heroin addicts.

Dylan made the news this week for what we Dylanphiles know is actually not that unusual: getting rubbed on by a hot Brazillian stage invader!

Would you invade Dylan's stage? What about jumpin' on Mick's lips in a flash, Jack? (I know, I know, we can do better than that.) The point is: then? Now? Who would you rather?

(BONUS: They're both ancient now... one was a brilliant hottie who liked to shake his ass nonstop... and still does. Today in Master Debating: Another Faked Memoir Leads Us to Ask "Should We Care?"

Yet another memoir has been revealed as a fake. This time it's a little more egregious than, say, James Frey's little sojourn into setting his pants on fire, since the author this time claimed to have been a halfie drug-and-gun runner for the Bloods and was, in fact, white and from Sherman Oaks, which as we understand it, saw its bloodiest years during the drug war as the setting of It's Garry Shandling's Show. The book's called "Love and Consequences" and it's being recalled entirely by the publisher, and the author (one Margaret Seltzer) is crying to the New York Times.

OK, fine, so they caught someone else cashing a book advance check on lies. Good for everyone.

Problem is, we're starting to wonder if any of the great memoirs of our age would stand up to the sort of scrutiny that books seem to be getting. Hey, listen, don't get us wrong, we're all for confabulators getting called out in the town square and all. It's just that, you know, as we peruse our own bookshelf, we're starting to wonder if, say, the memoirs of Mary McCarthy, Elie Wiesel, Bob Dylan, Vladimir Nabakov, or Anais Nin would check out 100%. And also, we're starting to wonder if we care. And should there be a different standard of truth between, say Bill Clinton, Augusten Burroughs, Primo Levi, and Iceberg Slim? Or, perhaps more curiously -- do established authors and personalities already get a pass on the factcheck just because of who they are, and if so: is that fair?

Surprisingly, Bob Dylan Wasn't Always the Easiest Interview

Just because we're Dylan fans doesn't mean we don't laugh our asses off at the rambling, incoherent nonsense he's known to spout during interviews. From the 1950s to now he's been our favorite mumbling pain in the ass. In honor of the new Dylan biopic I'm Not There, New York magazine's website has a list of the 10 most incomprehensible Dylan interviews of all time. Our favorite? Dylan on a Chabad telethon in 1991. For some reason, it makes us cringe the least.
