The 21-year-old star of three blockbuster Disney films has yet to make the mainstream leap. As he tells Gus Van Sant in this Interview interview, he doubts most big shot directors have even heard of him-- although "their daughters might."

VAN SANT: Is your schedule today really tight?

EFRON: Not today. I’m not really doing anything. I’m looking at some furniture, because I just got a new place, so I’m figuring out if I want this desk. I’m sitting at it right now. It’s a vintage Herman Miller desk from, like, 1940-something. I don’t know . . . I’m just deciding if I’m going to want it in my house, or if I’m just going to completely wreck it. [laughs] Herman Miller’s stuff is really, really modern, but they have some pretty brilliant designs. [Ed note: Herman Miller is credited with inventing the office cubicle.] I’m sitting at this desk, and it’s the most well-built thing I’ve ever sat at . . . It’s a beautiful piece. It’s got this amazing wood grain that I’ve never seen in any piece of furniture. It’s also a little pricey . . .

This could end up being an enlightening interview-- after all, how many celebrities expound on the merits of Herman Miller's work?

[On new movie 17 Again] At the time, it was the most unique opportunity that presented itself. There were several roles that I could have done where I would have played essentially another high school student, or they were romances or stories in a high school setting, and there were lots of things that people wanted to turn into musicals. But the whole idea of playing a 37-year-old guy as a 17-year-old was just the most exciting prospect for me. I was really intrigued by the idea. I’ve always been kind of an old man, so to speak.

It's encouraging to know that even though the publishing world in which I attempt to make a living is imploding, like many other industries lately, at least in some ways it's better for a working girl than it used to be. A 1938 rejection letter from Disney has been getting passed around online, and among the points it makes to a one job-seeking Mary Ford are: You can't be considered for Disney training school, because only men do the manly creative work on the cartoons (such as drawing Bambi sniffing pretty flower blossoms). But you might have a chance at tracing some drawings for us, though! But probably not.

You really must take a look.

Scanner Colleen is on the road today, and like everyone else "working" on Christmas Eve Eve, is as they say, "phoning it in." But she could not be more insistent about her post title.

So, I realize that outside of Cute Overload, it's unpopular on the Internets to voice sincere affection for anything wholesome, but I feel very strongly about the purity and goodness of the film It's a Wonderful Life. It's one of my all-time favorite movies. I'm already dreading the loathsome Hollywood remake that, let's be realistic, is surely in the pipeline (Tom Hanks in a "triumphant" performance, anyone?), and I just as surely will refuse to acknowledge said remake.

However! Someone beat them to it. Sort of. That someone was Disney, the year was 1985, the movie involved a creepy angel played by Harry Dean Stanton, and the results were: FAIL.

The movie was called One Magic Christmas, and I'd heard the name mentioned as a sort-of IAWL remake. I caught it this year on the Hallmark channel, and rightly so-- it's very much Hallmark/Lifetime fare. Strike one against it.

Mary Steenburgen plays the mom who doesn't have Christmas spirit, some guy plays the dad who's been out of work since June, and there's a cute little boy and girl who just want to have a special Christmas like all little brats do.

Harry Dean Stanton, who you might remember from Red Dawn, Paris, Texas, or The Last Temptation of Christ, plays the creepy gaunt angel Gideon, who lurks around watching the kids like a grade-A prevert. In one scene, he appears in the little girl's bedroom in the middle of the night, then he smashes her special North Pole snowglobe. Then -- just kidding!-- he magically reassembles it. Gee, what a great angel! Don't you want him to appear in your daughter's bedroom late at night?

I'm not too sure what happened after that because I fell asleep, as I do during 85% of movies I attempt to watch on TV, but I do recall waking up to see that the dad had DIED. Merry Christmas, kiddies!

Disney, being the greedy bastards they are, have apparently removed all traces of a "LOST" 2009 from the web—and before we even had a chance to see them! Jesus, save us! One of these pictures features Miley Cyrus, who is a role model to seven-year-old girls in every rich white town in Connecticut and in select other regions, was found to have been acting like a fifteen-year-old girl in the presence of her own personal cellphone camera. Miley Cyrus, who has an obligation under the law to go to church seven days a week, keep her head bowed at a 45-degree angle while in public, and marry the first man who kisses her on the mouth, scandalized the nation with these two shameful, shameful photos.

Miley Cyrus has been caught up in yet another photo scandal after an internet hacker accessed her phone's memory and found a series of saucy snaps.
The new pictures allegedly show the singer posing seductively in the shower with only a wet t-shirt covering her modesty, as well as a photo of her showing off her stomach in a skimpy top.
The snaps were reportedly downloaded from the star's personal picture phone memory by a hacker calling himself the Digital Gangster.
According to celebrity [asshole] Perez Hilton, who has the controversial new photographs on his website [complete with moronic, tasteless, offensive, inappropriate, uncalled-for, and cruel "graffiti" on each snap], the hacker is shopping the snaps around to several publications

The right wing has gotten tired of trying to find something wrong with Obama's mortgage or which hand he uses to wipe away his Muslim tears while he salutes the Nazi flag. They have a new enemy, one who''s smaller than an ogre but still bigger than John McCain: Wall-E.

Although we haven't seen the movie, we've heard for weeks that Pixar's latest animated film would feature some political content, including some "left-wing propaganda."

“It was like a 90-minute lecture on the dangers of over consumption, big corporations, and the destruction of the environment,” Pollowitz writes at Planet Gore, National Review’s global-warming blog.
I have been a huge fan of Disney Pixar's movies. Parents are usually just as entertained as their kids are. With WALL-E, that's probably true only if you thought An Inconvenient Truth was Oscar-worthy. As for me, Pixar's latest offering was Godforsaken dreck. From the first moment of the film, my kids were bombarded with leftist propaganda about the evils of mankind. [National Review]

Robert Patrick J. Ford of The American Conservative suggests that “Wall-E” is... more right-wing than left-wing. “The real tragedy of these callous conservative critics (say that three times fast) is that they are missing the real lessons of the movie, ones I found immediately attractive to a traditional conservative,” Ford writes. “In the film, it becomes clear that mass consumerism is not just the product of big business, but of big business wedded with big government.

You know, maybe we are over-reacting about all this Miley Cyrus half nakedness. See, we were mostly put-off because Disney had marketed Cyrus as this wholesome, pure, Christian role-model. They seemed outraged over the Vanity Fair pictures; a Disney spokeswoman told the New York Times that "a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines." But now we're starting to think Disney might actually be trying to sex up its image.

You tell us.

Slate's Daniel Brook snapped this billboard in China recently. Ok, it's China, but still. We think we've heard just about enough from Disney on this whole Miley Cyrus issue. Also, we wouldn't like to hear any more from Bill O'Reilly (on any issue).

We hereby declare ourselves the Moral Authority on the Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair Possibly Naughty Pictures Issue, because unlike Disney and O'Reilly we were once a 15-year-old girl. Also, we saw Billy Ray Cyrus perform Achey Brakey Heart at the Grand Palace in Branson, maybe even before lil' Cyrus was born. So there.

Crocs Inc, known for its colorful plastic shoes, on Thursday said it is launching a line of shoes and accessories based on Walt Disney Co's hit shows "Hannah Montana" and "High School Musical."

The shoemaker also said it will make shoes tied to the upcoming Walt Disney film "Wall-E."

The Hannah Montana and Wall-E inspired Crocs will come to market in May while High School Musical footwear will debut this summer.

"Lost" Writers Need Your Ideas. STAT!

Is Jin really dead or is he still on the Island? Does Ji Yeon really not belong to Jin after all? Because the time/space continuum was all fucked up and even though it looked like Sun was eight weeks pregnant on Juliette's ultrasound and they thought they'd been on the island more than eight weeks, maybe they actually hadn't? Because wouldn't she be dead right now if she'd conceived on the Island? Even if she got off?

And what the fuck is the four-toed statue? And the black smoke monster? And what does it have to do with time travel? And who is the guy on the ship with the big teeth and the wife beater? And why do I hate him so much?

Is it really 1988 on the Island? Is that why Locke can walk? Because the 2004 version of the passengers of flight Oceanic815 landed in the ocean while the 1988 version is on the Island, alive and still kicking? But how does that explain Aaron? Wouldn't Claire have gone back to being, like, four? Ah! Aaron? Fucking Kate! Ahhhhhhh!

Well, the writers of "Lost" seem to be just as lost as we are because they want you to upload your "video theories" to ABC.com. This is their super-clever, "interactive" way of asking you to do their job, because apparently, they've dug themselves a plot so deep, even they can't find their way out of it.

Barbara Ehrenreich Pulls a "Bait and Switch" Over Disney Princesses

What does this opening of an online-only article from The Nation make you think of?

Contrary to the rumors I have been trying to spread for some time, Disney Princess products are not contaminated with lead. More careful analysis shows that the entire product line--books, DVDs, ball gowns, necklaces, toy cell phones, toothbrush holders, T-shirts, lunch boxes, backpacks, wallpaper, sheets, stickers etc.--is saturated with a particularly potent time-release form of the date rape drug.

If you said "Why, I thought of those crazy Australian craft toys that were laced with GHB," then you're exactly like us. In which case, we'll save you a bit of disappointment and say that Disney Princess products are NOT in fact laced with any actual chemicals or drugs. They are simply, in the eyes of Nation contributor and normally less hyperbolic author Barbara Ehrenreich, pure fucking little girl evil.

Seen from the witchy end of the female life cycle, the Princesses exert their pull through a dark and undeniable eroticism. They're sexy little wenches, for one thing. Snow White has gotten slimmer and bustier over the years; Ariel wears nothing but a bikini top (though, admittedly, she is half fish.) In faithful imitation, the 3-year-old in my life flounces around with her tiara askew and her Princess gown sliding off her shoulder, looking for all the world like a London socialite after a hard night of cocaine and booze. Then she demands a poison apple and falls to the floor in a beautiful swoon. Pass the Rohypnol-laced margarita, please.

Ugh.

We, too, find Disney to be pretty insidious. And we get that Ehrenreich is being tongue in cheek when she rails against this admittedly scary franchise. (She ends the piece with a call to pitchforks, fer crying out loud.) But... jokes about date rape in an article about kids toys? Really?

To be perfectly clear about this: we're pretty sure we agree, in basic principle, with Ehrenreich. We just really hate this piece. And we could probably go on about the many ways in which we're baffled by it, but suffice it say that even if Ehrenreich had traded in her press pass for a pair of pajamas and a LiveJournal account, we'd still find this weird screed to be schizophrenic, unfunny, overreaching, and way too revealing. (Not to put too fine a point on it, but if anyone's 3-year-old actually looks like Peaches Geldof at the scratchy end of a weekend, shouldn't the accusatory glares first go to the mirror, mirror on the wall?)

Plus, as a complaint about Disney, isn't this, like, ten years too late? Or are we the only ones who called it "Pocahooters" when it came out?
