As we've mentioned previously, Dita Von Teese took Paris by blitzkreig over the past couple of weeks, wrapping up her epic burlesque run at the Crazy Horse this past Monday night.

Pack a beret and pick up a smoking habit: Scanner dream girl (some want to do her some want to be her) Dita Von Teese is gearing up for a two-week nude revue at the Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris.

"I feel that Paris is a place that still appreciates its showgirls," she told Reuters in an interview before a two-week run at the celebrated Crazy Horse theater from February 1.

Von Teese, a familiar figure at the Paris couture shows, has carved a peculiar niche over the years, leading the way as burlesque has grown from simple striptease to becoming an established part of the fashion world.

Two years ago she emerged from a rhinestone-encrusted bubblebath as the first guest star at the Crazy Horse but the new show will have more specially designed numbers, including two songs she has recorded herself.

"I feel I have to raise the bar," she said.

The Crazy Horse has been a Paris institution since 1951, regularly drawing celebrities like Madonna or fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier to see its dancers strut the stage in little more than fluorescent wigs and strobe lights.

"I've always had a real fascination with the Crazy Horse ever since I was a teenager and I found a picture of this line of nearly nude toy soldiers standing at attention," she said, referring to the trademark parade that opens the nightly show.

"I wanted to do something more elaborate this time," she said. "Combine the Crazy Horse style with what I do which is classic American burlesque."

We think you can make reservations here. But then again, we failed French. Twice.

Look Who's Talking... About Sex

Amy Graff, a blogger for the San Francisco Gate, recently had an uncomfortable moment with her daughter in a Castro Williams Sonoma. After her four-year-old asked what sex was, Graff could only equate it to plugging in a toaster. Even if naming her daughter Paris might have been a step in the wrong sexual direction, at least she handled it better than our mom when she asked us if we even knew what sex was.

"Mmhmm. It's when a boy puts his penis in a girl's vagina."

"No," said Mom. "It's not."

Imagine how screwed up we were about sex for the next few years. Instead of doing what our mom did to us (up until the end of sixth grade, we were certain a blow job was something one did to a car), Graff at least tried to fix her wrong and consulted Dr. Shashank Joshi, director of training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry for some advice on how to handle the situation.

While Joshi's words of wisdom sound quite a bit like the "If you encounter a bear" training speech we got at summer camp ("Keep a measured and relaxed tone and receptive stance") it's pretty sound advice.

What should a parent say to a 4-year-old who wants to know how babies are made? First, take a deep breath! For a young child, something simple like 'A mom and a dad make a baby by holding each other in a special way...then it takes about nine months for the baby to grow inside the mommy, before it comes out' can do the trick.
You might consider practicing some responses to common questions with your spouse/partner, or even with a friend or fellow parent, if it helps decrease your anxiety. Also, think of this not so much as an early sex talk, but more as an ongoing discussion about development and life changes. This way the questions about where babies come from and your children's normal curiosity about genitals is seen more in the 'typical' context of their daily lives.
So a 4-year-old isn't too young to begin learning about sex? The sooner the better, if you want to build a trusting relationship around matters that make you a little squeamish. It's best to get over this discomfort early, and avoid taking your first stab at these conversations during the adolescent years. The task doesn't get any easier with a teen. Plus, there is ample research suggesting that early sex education can help to delay the age of first intercourse and early pregnancy.
What about bigger sex-related issues such as contraception and AIDs? When do you bring up this stuff? From a development perspective, most kids will not understand these concepts in detail until the preteen years. You'll need to base the timing of these topics on how ready they seem, or how interested they are. So, consider a more detailed discussion of contraception and AIDS prevention around 10 or 11. However, if they are starting puberty early--for example, for girls as young as 8 or 9 (10 to 11 for boys)--you may need to discuss these issues earlier.
Are there any big "no-nos" when you're talking with your kids? The main ones have to do with your own reactions. For example, try to not show embarrassment, shock, or outrage at their questions. Keep a measured and relaxed tone and receptive stance, no matter what the material.
Should parents be concerned about what kids see on TV? Love scenes, kissing? If the TV is the main source for your children's sex education, be afraid. Be very afraid. Young children are impressionable--so closely monitor what they are watching. Be proactive--don't let the TV or movies do the talking for you. On the other hand, you may want to employ the use of a scene from a show, or a special book to get the discussion going. For a young child, (4 to 8 years old) It's So Amazing!: A Book about Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families gets rave reviews from parents I've worked with. As they get older (9 to 12 years old), the next volume in the series is It's Not the Stork!: A Book About Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends.
Anything else to add? Take advantage of teachable moments. They can happen anywhere--while watching TV together, reading a book, or even at the park. You don't need to make a speech. Keep it simple, direct and relevant. Start by asking what your child already knows. Let your child guide the talk with her questions. Some children may not ask for information if they think you might be uneasy with it. Others might test you by asking embarrassing questions. Talk openly, and let your child know she can ask you about anything. It sets the stage for healthy communication on difficult topics for the long term.
For instance, teaching the actual names for body parts (in addition to whatever names your child likes to call her genitals) during bath times or diaper changes can be a good way to start. Keep in mind that making up names for body parts may give the idea that there is something bad about the proper name. Also, be sure to teach your child which parts are private parts (those covered by a bathing suit). You may decide to teach your child that interest in genital organs is healthy and natural but nudity and sexual play in public are not all right. Also, young children need to learn that no other person, including even close friends and relatives, may touch private parts.

$108 Mil Transvestite Jewelry Heist

A Harry Winston retailer in Paris is out $108 million after being burglarized last week by a band of cross-dressing robbers. Apparently the French fuzz have no solid leads on these thieving drag queens and insurer Lloyds of London is offering a million bucks for any useful information.

Three out of the four gunmen were reportedly dressed as women as they raided the satellite luxury boutique of Harry Winston Diamond Corp. among holiday shoppers. They looted the world-renowned jewelry retailer, located right around the corner from the Champs-Elysees, in the early evening. How do we know they weren't just a bunch of ugly women? [Insert French hairy armpit joke here]

CNN reports the robbery as, "one of the biggest jewel heists in history."

It was déjà vu for the store, which caters to the über-rich on the fashionable Avenue Montaigne in Paris. A year ago, it was robbed of $28.4 million in jewels, according to Thomas Weisel analyst Matthew O'Keefe.

Our suspects include Rupaul and any pathetic soul who read Lauren The-Devil-Wears-Prada Weisberger's third novel.

Paris Night Club Says You Can Never Start 'Em Too Young

A new nightclub has just opened in Paris and if you think you're getting in, think again. They've got a very strict entrance policy...

The New York Times' describes a recent Saturday scene:

There was a crowd seven deep on Saturday outside one of the hottest clubs in Paris. Young people were pleading to get in, but the woman with the clipboard behind the velvet rope would not budge. There was some crying.

“Too old,” the clipboard woman said in French to a photographer, who was snapping pictures every time the door opened to reveal a peek of a padded red room with glittering lights and the promise of V.I.P.’s inside. One apparently overstimulated patron was passed out on steps outside.

At BabyDisco, they don't mess around. All patrons must be between the ages of 3 and 7. (Seriously. They're checking ID's.) Anywhoo, before your imagination runs away with images of boozing babies and inebriated infants, we should clarify. It's some sort of whack-a-doodle, yuppie art installation in Paris' Palais de Tokyo museum. The inspiration? To "introduce children to the creative aspects of dance, music and video."

Oh, and it's sponsored by Little Marc Jacobs. But, of course!

Design god Yves Saint Laurent died yesterday in his Paris apartment. He was 71.

We'll be honest, we didn't even know he was still alive. That's probably because our idea of following fashion is looking at the American Apparel catalog while on the toilet, and anything bearing the YSL label is too rich for our blogger blood. But Yves Saint Laurent was a name we knew well and prided ourselves in pronouncing correctly.

"And how does this relate to Scanner?," you might be asking yourself?

First let us ask you, "What are you wearing?"

Because not only did Laurent put Kate Moss in your magazines, he put women in sexy pants.

Originally a maverick and a generator of controversy — in 1968, his suggestion that women wear pants as an everyday uniform was considered revolutionary — Mr. Saint Laurent developed into a more conservative designer, a believer in evolution rather than revolution. He often said that all a woman needed to be fashionable was a pair of pants, a sweater and a raincoat.

“My small job as a couturier,” he once said, “is to make clothes that reflect our times. I’m convinced women want to wear pants.”

And for that, we thank you Mr. Laurent.

Heard the latest in the inquest into the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed? Yes, that is actually happening. Yes, it was ten long years ago when they were killed in a car accident in Paris. Yes, unless you are from across the pond, or an Anglophile, or a sad obsessive you may have missed it. The recap - the long suffering father of Dodi, Mohamed Al Fayed, has always maintained that the couple were murdered by the royal family because Diana was with child and planning a wedding and Prince Philip especially did not want a Muslim mucking up the family holidays. Here’s what happened in court today that seemingly reinforces the idea that Al Fayed is just tragic, and the royals may be cold, but killing Diana was not on the agenda for His or Her Royal Highness:

A letter from Diana to Prince Philip in 1992 where the two seemed to have commiserated over the failing marriage of Charles and Di, with a friendly ‘Dear Pa’ salutation. While that sounds a little more Walton than Windsor, it still points to a pretty human relationship, one unlikely to turn murderous because of a short-term relationship with a wealthy exotic dude.

Testimony from FOD, Rosa Monckton, who had just returned from a cruise with the People’s Princess weeks before the crash and reported that Diana had been on the rag, therefore proving she was not pregnant. Nice. I sure hope my friends come forward if I’m in a tragic accident with a royal/wealthy person/celebrity and testify about my private lady business. Which reminds me, must stop complaining loudly about ‘the rash’ at book club. Ha, ha! Kidding, I don't go to book club.
