Med Student Dies From Legal Party Drug

Med student and aspiring surgeon Hester Stewart was found dead in Brighton, England on Sunday after a party following an awards ceremony with her cheerleading squad. She died from a drug the kids are taking which has not yet been made illegal.

Hester's body was near a vial of the colorless, odorless liquid GBL (gamma-butyrolactone), which mixes with stomach acids to form GHB, aka the date rape drug, and it's available on the Internet legally. This is thought to be the third GBL-related death in the past year.

The kicker is that the UK's Home Office announced it would make the substance illegal a full eight months ago, declaring it "can lead to dependence, unconsciousness and even death by intoxication."

A spokesman explained why GBL is still available. "We are currently looking at the legislative options for control, to target the problems of misuse of GBL, which has a number of legitimate uses."

Of course even if the drug were illegal, that doesn't mean that someone who either chose to take the date rape drug or was slipped the date rape drug wouldn't have done it anyway. As to who was the responsible party in the drug-giving or taking, one of Hester's fellow partygoers said she took the drug herself, though of course her mother denies she ever would have done such a thing. No one is being charged with slipping her a mickey.

So, apparently in the UK it's fine to turn away someone at the airport if the Border Agency doesn't approve of the wardrobe they've brought. In the case of a 32-year-old Brazilian woman, she was recently refused admission to Newcastle from Geneva when her luggage contained only T-shirts, lingerie, and a robe.

And this is illegal because...?

For one thing, the woman wouldn't specify her plans in Newcastle, other than seeing the city center. For another, she had been refused admission to the UK three months prior, when she attempted to fly into Belfast with sex toys and a list of escort services.

A spokesperson for the Border Agency said, "Visitors to the UK must play by the rules. Those who do not are refused entry and sent home." Sounds like this woman is guilty of being sexy! But what rules did she not play by? BBC News did not specify.

Almost exactly a year ago today, I wrote a blog post for a green website about the UK's Rabbit Amnesty program for recycling sex toys (and shortly thereafter was asked by the editor if I wouldn't mind taking that post down because the subject matter was a little too racy and they had investors to please). That post ended asking when the U.S. would step it up with a recycling program of our own.

They have, and as with the Rabbit Amnesty program, incentives are offered to recyclers.

The Sex Toy Recycling Program does it all for you after you pop your used goodies in the mail:

There's no way this story can be real, but it was originally reported in the UK's Daily Star on March 30, so unless they have an earlier Fools' Day over there, it's not an April Fools prank.

So, Pete Doherty is apparently cleaned up now, so much so that he's squeamish around needles. This was unfortunate when he decided to get a tattoo on his butt, and could only make it halfway through before begging the tattooist to stop. The result is a rather appropriate unintended word on his arse...

WASTE.

According to Charli Morgan's column "Goss," Doherty wanted to have Wasteland tattooed on his ass, after his favoriteTS Eliot poem. That could have worked, too, but "waste" is even better suited for its rump location.

You remember this poor little bastard, Alfie Patten, the four-foot tall 13-year-old new dad. First came the news of the 13- and 15- year- old parents, then came allegations that the baby momma Chantelle had slept around with numerous other schoolboys. Alfie agreed to take a DNA test, once his mum explained to him what a DNA test was. We'd just been wondering ourselves what the results of the paternity test had been when this update hit the tabloids...

Alfie is not Maisie's dad.

Apparently Chantelle told her half-sister the father could have been any of a number of boys she'd slept with, but her mom ordered her to say she'd been a virgin when she slept with wee Alfie.

Alfie's dad Dennis helped start the press blitz when he gave an interview shortly after the baby was born, saying, “He hasn’t a clue what a baby means and can’t explain how he feels. When I spoke to him he started crying. He said it was the first time he’d had sex, he didn’t know what he was doing or the complications that could come. I’ll talk to him again and it’ll be the birds and bees talk.”

We need to find some less depressing stories today.

A 15-year-old British girl was tried today for prostitution, after a teacher discovered her double life by looking in her backpack. In the girl's school bag were condoms, lube, the number of her pimp and the escort agency she worked through.

When police raided her home, they found more than $11,000 stashed away. The girl has not been charged, but the found money has been siezed.

But before she was caught, the young hooker had quite a racket going on for about two months.

She kept up with her studies, said the Daily Mail, and earned around $2500 each weekend, which if kept up, would have worked out to nearly $150K per year. (What was that sound, you ask? Never mind, just shooting self for choosing such an unprofitable profession.)

The story of 13-year-old baby daddy Alfie, 15-year-old mum Chantelle and their newborn Maisie had some new developments over the weekend. Two other teenage boys came forward as potential fathers to Maisie and called her reputation into question. And have you seen Alfie's estranged dad?

Does no one involved in this affair have any judgment?

Alfie and Chantelle both deny that Chantelle had ever been with anyone but Alfie, and the little guy has agreed to do a paternity test, although he had never heard of such a thing before this mess began.

It's all over the news today that two British kids, 13-year-old Alfie Pattman and 15-year-old Chantelle Steadman, have made a kid of their own, Maisie Roxanne.

Wee Alfie is only four feet tall, his voice hasn't even changed yet, and he doesn't know what the word "financially" means. It gets more depressing-- won't you join us after the jump?

Chantelle hid her pregnancy from her mom until she noticed the protruding tummy, reports the Sun. Mum Penny couldn't have been too surprised, though, as she allowed the two to sleep together in Chantelle's bedroom. Alfie even kept a school uniform at his lady friend's place, so he could go right to school from there. Penny and husband Steve are on the dole, by the way, aka welfare.

The "fashion police" were on alert on Thursday for Royal Ascot's Ladies Day to ensure no mini-skirts or bare midriffs marred the hallowed turf of the exclusive Royal Enclosure.

For officials at one of the world's most elegant race meetings are cracking the sartorial whip after veteran racegoers complained that standards were slipping.

So the Duke of Devonshire, chairman of the course where Queen Elizabeth plays host for the five-day meeting, has issued firm fashion instructions to stamp out errant dressers.

Once the Royal Enclosure was so select that divorcees were banned and all ladies had to wear gloves.

Today all you need to gain admittance is to be recommended by someone who has attended four times before.

All this year's badgeholders were given their fashion marching orders and warned: "Those not complying with the directions will be asked to leave the Royal Enclosure."

We're not much for dress codes, but we couldn't agree more. (No one wants to see tits and ass, right?) That's why we pretty much avoid any place that won't allow us to wear a grungy t-shirt and jeans. But we also know that if we're going somewhere fancy, we at least have to put on a clean t-shirt and our dress jeans. Or you know, dress the part, reluctantly. No matter how badly you want to wear jeans, or have your ass hanging out of a short skirt, some traditions should just be respected.

There's a pretty extensive story on aprhodisiacs in today's Independent. And after seeing "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" last night, a movie which includes one of the sexiest dinner sequences in history and will forever exchange your appreciation for oysters, this story seems quite fitting...

Here are some tips from the article, which you probably already know because you're sooo much more sexually experienced than us [snort]...

1. Artichokes really work for women... when men eat them.

2. Pumpkin seeds were the fad of '06, but there haven't been too many success stories since. Or, um, ever.

3. The higher the cocoa content of the chocolate (70%, say), the better chance you'll fall in love. Or at least have some hot foreplay.

4. Contrary to what you'd think about getting the blood flowing in a dude, "doughnuts, pizza, popcorn and strawberries" work best, according to a recent study. Guys get off on "smells that evoke the security and pleasure of childhood." Ewwwwww....

5. Apparently, any food is really hot when presented in the right sexual context. Although I find it, uh, hard to believe that anyone could be turned on by a Canned Cheeseburger.

Half of English Men Would Trade Sex for TV

Maybe that woman in the UK who refuses to sleep with her husband is onto something: the husbands don't want to sleep with her either.

A new survey of folks across the pond finds 47% of their menfolk would give up a full six months of sex for the pleasure of a 50 inch television. Readers who are surprised by this revelation obviously have never seen Maria Bartiromo (pictured above) or, um, Mythbusters.

It should be noted that the study mentioned here was conducted by a television manufacturer and probably only surveyed married people, who aren't getting laid anyway. Two other things are interesting, though: only one third of women said they would give up sex for six months, compared to half of the men; and only a quarter of those surveyed said they would give up smoking.

Does that mean smoking is officially better than sex?

Some kids in the UK were pleasantly surprised to find their English teacher in a soft-core-porn style video on YouTube. Unfortunately, the results were not so pleasant for her.

The teacher took part in the commercial - called Hardcore, A Dirty Movie - as a trainee, two years before taking up her first post at £7,000-a-year Stockport Grammar School.

Although never shown on TV, the advert for Scruffs clothing was sent out to construction firms. In 2005, it won two prizes at the world's top advertising awards in Cannes.

A copy was later posted on the videosharing website YouTube, where it was discovered by Miss Green's pupils earlier this month.

Predictably, it wasn't long before the clip of the teacher, who is in her 20s, was being circulated around the school. And yesterday her career was hanging in the balance after she was suspended.

Two scientists in the UK have won approval to create human-animal hybrid embryos for "medical research."

The long-running issue of whether to allow production of the embryos - using human DNA implanted into animal eggs - has in the past prompted sensational headlines about "Frankenbunnies". A government white paper published in December 2006 after public consultation originally announced that the creation of chimeras - organisms consisting of at least two genetically different kinds of tissue - and other kinds of interspecies embryos would be banned.

"Frankenbunnies." That's kind-of what we were thinking.

More than 6,000 Radio 5 live listeners responded to the 'Confessions' survey for the channel's breakfast show, reports the Sun.
