But Ashton Kutcher makes us feel downright dignified by comparison, what with Punk'd, the throwing of bottles at construction workers near his house who woke baby up, and the general impression that he is one with the character he played on That '70s Show. His latest folly is challenging CNNs' breaking news account to a Twitter popularity contest.

So now it's a race to 1 million followers, and what Ashton plans to do if he wins is straight out of your preteen Mischief Night.

If Ashton wins, he plans to "ding dong ditch" Ted Turner's house. He will also reward his millionth follower with a copy of Guitar Hero <strike>and give him a noogie and a purple nurple, then a wet willie, followed by an atomic wedgie</strike>.

Larry King has accepted the challenge. No Twitter account has yet broken 1 million, but CNN is the closest with 960,000, and Ashton has over 950,000. CNN anticipates breaking a mill by Friday, so keep a close watch on this vital breaking news.

Related:

Stars, They're Just Like Us: Ashton Hates His "F@#king Jackass Neighbor", Too!

And Now, the Continuing Drama of Ashton & Last week, there was a column on CNN.com (via the Frisky) which confronted the incredibly annoying and unsettled question: "Who should pay on a first date?"

Besides the stock answer ("the asker"), there was remarkably little of substance in the story's "debate." Since we could care less about offending people with honesty, we'll now respond with a comment that hung over the proceedings: the discussion is incredibly sexist.

While we agree that the noble thing for the "asker" to do is at least offer to take care of the check and tip and to just deal with it if the other person doesn't take the bait by offering to pay half, that's not really the issue here.

First, we have to address this crazy reaction women gave the Frisky writer for even considering a guy who offered to split the check on a first, second, third, and even fourth date:

In my personal experience, if a woman is in any way visibly or audibly bothered by the suggestion to split the tab at the end of a date, there are two possible outcomes for the relationship...

1) she will be revealed as a person who has unrealistic expectations, what we call the "fairytale model." This person may have an extensive list of specific requirements for a relationship, a list that will limit her to only men who will do anything to prove they are worthy, while all others will move on and avoid the hassle.

2) the woman is looking for an excuse to go back to her friends and tell them "he did this one single thing that pissed me off, never mind the rest of the date was amazing, and so, therefore, I won't return his calls again." This is what we refer to as the "fear of rejection" model. In other words, and I know we may be stretching a bit, some women see a man's desire to pay for dinner as proof of interest, while an offer to split means the guy is either a jerk, a stingy jerk, or a not-interested jerk. In many cases, they may be correct.

These are all, of course, pulled out of my ass and are entirely debatable, but keep in mind they are impressions and we decide whether to call based on these impressions.

Second...

What really annoys us guys about this "first date" debate is unrelated to why women get upset about an offer to split the tab instead of the guy just paying outright. It's actually because of comments like this:

And if you [ladies] don't pay for the whole thing, you should at least offer
to split the tab. Incredibly (to me), most women I spoke to thought I
was an idiot and firmly believed the dude should always pay on a first
date -- though for some this was a recent change of heart.

Kate,
a 33-year-old writer told me, "I tend to try to pay for myself, but as
I get older and more comfortable with my awesomeness, I kind of wish
and hope that the other person will be a little more old-fashioned
about it." Good point. If someone's eating opposite Amazing Me,
shouldn't she or he pay for the privilege? After all, I'm entertaining
and cute and if you let me order dessert there may be some smooching in
your future.

While the Frisky writer is probably kidding about those followup comments, "Kate" clearly let some serious sexism slip out in her remarks. We're going to have to do a lot better than this if we're going to have equality between the sexes-- if women want to stop being thought of as sex objects, which men can "rent" by paying for dinner (again, this is the male thinking-- he's paying for dinner, what is he getting out of it?), why would they be so stubborn about a split check?

Even worse, the Frisky story suggests it's practically outrageous to split the check until at least the fourth date. On a personal note, we once dumped a woman for having to pay for her for four dinners in a row: it made her seem like a) she was a conservative and that the real her was still to emerge, b) she was seeing me for the free salmon sandwiches and Chianti. (Matter of fact, that combo should have been a big red flag to begin with....) Or it could've been c) all of the above.

Here's another way of putting it: if you changed the phrase "old-fashioned about it" to "pre-feminist about it," what would you have? You'd have an individual making a complete ass of herself on cnn.com in order to justify their cheapskate point-of-view.

Ladies, we understand why you don't want to split the check-- it's a rough economy out there and dating is extremely expensive, especially when you are still trying to find someone to involve yourself with. But there's only one word for your position on this issue: sexist.

From CNN, via the Frisky.

Related:

'Playboy' Picks Its Ninth Play Boy

Colorado Kids Want to Write About Sex and No One Can Stop Them

WIRED Analysis: Playboy's Incredibly Shrinking Women

Australians Fight Back Against Potential Topless Sunbathing Ban

Obama Not Only President, Also Rock Star, America's Dad

Many Americans have the Obama fever, but the following video illustrates it in action. Another friend, Beny Rubinstein, got a direct message saying Rutberg
had been robbed at gunpoint in London and needed money to get back to
the United States.

So, trying to be a good friend, Rubinstein

Not so anymore, according to CNN's reading of the Gallup numbers:

As the debate rages within GOP ranks over where to take the party, the poll might offer some guidance.

Most Republicans — 59 percent — want the party to become more
conservative, according to the poll. Another 28 percent want it to
remain about the same ideologically, while only 12 percent would prefer
to see the Republican Party become less conservative.

Independents are split on whether the party should track left or
right: 35 percent of independent voters say the GOP should become more
conservative, and 35 percent say less conservative.

Not only are independents evenly divided on what it would take to rope them into the fold, the party itself isn't holding it together either: while the country and the newest generation of voters want the country moving to the left on Iraq, gay marriage, healthcare, and so on, Republicans want to-- forgive the expression-- cling to guns and religion. (And making abortion a top issue, which won't go over well with us youth types, either...)

What do you think? Can the GOP bounce back? Will a faltering economy doom Democrats in 2010 and bring back a Republican movement?

Via CNN.

Related:

Who Will Be Time's Person of the Year?

The Election Is Over... This is not a dig at Texas-- this is a dig at how Texas State Government views the death penalty. And the fact that 23 years have passed since Moreno committed a murder-kidnapping and Moreno still hasn't been put to death is either a miracle or a travesty of justice, depending on which side you're on...

Anderson Cooper's 360 blog has a diary entry from Moreno in which he talks about the moments leading up to his own execution:

When your final visit is
almost up, the warden (Hirsch) comes to pick you up. From that point
on, every officer that has any dealings with you is a sergeant or
higher, mostly lieutenants and captains. When you come out of the
visiting room, there is a lot of freeworld people there. I didn’t
recognize any, except the wardens. From there, you are escorted to a
cage where you are searched thoroughly (you know, lift your feet and
wiggle your toes, bend over and spread your ass-cheeks, then with the
same hands stick your fingers in your mouth and pull your mouth open so
they can check your other cheeks!) and given all brand-new clothing and
cloth shoes.

The last thing Warden
Hirsch says to me is, “Thanks for being a man about all this.”

Now, getting back to the death
chamber. Once they get you out of the van and walk you the few feet to
the holding area right next to the death chamber, they lock the door
and repeat the process of removing the leg irons, belts, handcuffs and
hog chain. They strip you right there in front of them (no cage
necessary because there’s about 12 built or big rank all around you — a
major or two, captains, and lieutenants). After they search you and
dress you in their brand-new clothing, they allow you to walk over to
the finger-printing booth (two sets of prints) and walk to their
holding cell.

You know those huge 10-gallon
containers they bring our juice/tea to the pods? Well, there’s three of
them on the table. One with coffee, one tea, and I think one of juice.
Then there’s milk cartons chilling on ice and a BIG silver platter with
all sorts of sweets on it: cookies, buns, rolls, pastries, etc.

When the warden shows up, I
think he is there to gauge how you are going to behave. He starts off
by telling you what is going to happen. At 3 o’clock they will let you
walk out of your cell and walk to the next cell where you will be
behind a screen so you can visit with your spiritual advisor. The
spiritual advisor visit lasts about an hour. Then, at 4, they will
bring your last meal.

...you won’t see him no more until
6, when he comes to get you. He will say, “It’s time.” At that point,
you will walk out of the cell and directly through that door (you can
see it from the cell, it’s only about 10-15 feet), that’s the execution
chamber. You will then be placed on the gurney and strapped down. Then
two medically trained personnel will stand on each side and inject a
catheter into each arm. Then he (warden) will stand behind your head
and ask you if you have a last statement. He will give you about two
minutes but is flexible, depending on what you are saying. He has two
rules: 1) No profanity or cussing, and 2) It must be in English.

Then he tells you that if you
get a stay, the chaplain will come inform you. Finally, he asks if you
have any questions. It is at this time you are supposed to ask him to
use the telephone and smoke cigarettes as per the instructions you will
receive from the chaplain the day before. He tells you that the
chaplain will provide the cigarettes and that you can call as many
people as you want but the person must be in the continental U.S., and
all phone calls will stop at 5.

So the warden leaves and I get
right on the phone. I get some very sweet tea, a milk, and wait for him
to light me a cigarette. The first person I talk to on the phone is my
oldest (longest-lasting) friend, Linda. But I wasn’t doing much talking
because I was trying to choke down my sobbing. (Sobbing is
uncontrollable crying). It was at this point that it all made sense to
me and I was more scared than I’ve ever been in my whole life.

Of course, since you're reading the journal entry, you know Moreno must've received a visit from the chaplain and that the chaplain let him know the execution had been stayed. Sure enough, as of this writing, Moreno lives in the only civilized country on earth that allows capital punishment.

Via CNN.

Related:

Dumb Cops Make Mondays Bearable

Woman Kills Rapist With Shotgun Blast Through Her Front Door

Germany's Richest Woman Blackmailed With Own Sex Tape

Sloppy Seconds: Photos of New Planets, Yay!

Same-sex heart transplants are the just better. And you can't justify it,"

Okay so far...

What's the number one reason men cheat? Ninety-two percent of men said it wasn't primarily about the sex.

"The majority said it was an emotional disconnection, specifically a
sense of feeling underappreciated. A lack of thoughtful gestures..."

Like BJ's and letting him film your threesome.

Josh says he cheated on his wife, Jennifer, because he felt
underappreciated at home and started feeling insecure. "That insecurity
was really the catalyst," he says. "I didn't feel comfortable going to
the one person in the world I should be going to, which is my wife."

We're sorry, but you were insecure? And Oprah is letting this guy get a free ride?! We're sorely disappointed.

Men have a winning mentality.

Except when they're cheating losers.

"Does he have ownership in the team? It looks like that. But as long as
they're in the game, even to the very end, they'll watch. Once it's a
blowout and they know their team can't win, television goes off. And
what a lot of men will say to me through this research is, 'I just felt
like I couldn't win.'"

A sports metaphor for talking about men? Please, go on for a few more paragraphs like this, it isn't tiresome or cliche at all...

For the first five years of his marriage,
AJ says things were rocky with his wife, Janet. "We got to the point
where we were really living in separate parts of the house. I went
downstairs every time I came home from work..."

The Oprah guru goes on to say AJ eventually cheated on his wife. Honestly, we're not sure the word "cheated" is appropriate, though technically correct, in this case. You were living in separate wings of the house? Unless AJ is a cover for "William J. Clinton," we're pretty sure this guy's marriage was going to end anyway...

But maybe you have a different opinion. Hating on CNN and this stupid story? Not debatable, sorry.

Via CNN Living.

Related:

While You Were Sleeping: Mike Myers Is An Inglorious Bastard

This Week In Gayness: Guys Making Out On CNN

CNN Hasn't Been Getting Many Second Dates

Ladies, If You're Not In The Mood, CNN Is Here To Save You...

The Veep Deba(cle): Why Everybody Loses

Sloppy Seconds: Demi Moore And Her Boob Squirt

Today In Embarrassing Headlines: CNN's "Run, Drink, Vomit"

Sometimes we click on headlines because they seem interesting, and sometimes we click on headlines because of the sheer incongruity between them and their hosting publication. Welcome to today's most embarassing headline...

CNN, America's "most trusted name in news," has either jumped the shark or nuked the fridge, or just gotten so plum bored with all their "big shot" reporting that they decided that a beer marathon was worthy of their breaking front page news. And it's not just any old piece about a beer marathon, but one headlined "Beer Marathoners Run, Drink, Vomit."

But, wait! It gets better. After the jump (is it called that outside of blogland?) the headline is changed to "Runners Must Drink Beer." Breaking news, eh, CNN?

As for the story in question - yeah, it's relatively interesting, in that it's about a beer marathon, in that we clicked on it, and in that we managed to watch about two-thirds of the video, which amounts to approximately one entire minute, which means that they held our attention about 59 seconds longer than the NY Times Sunday Styles section did yesterday.

Oh, and also, the video shows people puking. Way to go, CNN! Keep on, keepin' on!

And while we're at it, feel free to share any ridiculous headlines you find today. We're really bored.

[via, of course, CNN]

Olive Riley, World's Oldest Blogger, Dies At Age 108

This ridiculously awesome woman is Olive Riley, the world's oldest blogger. The less-awesome part of all this is that she passed away in an Australian nursing home on Saturday, though, per her blog, not before singing "a happy little song."

Born in 1899 (no joke!), she started blogging in February 2007, at the suggestion of Mike Rubbo, an Australian film-maker who shot a documentary of her life four years ago. Olive's "blob", as she liked to call it, covers the last, oh, century of her life and what it was like to live through two world wars, raise three children on her own, and work as both a farmhand and a barmaid.

We'd give you some examples of her adorable posts, but for some reason her actual blob, conveniently titled "The Life Of Riley", isn't loading (but keep trying!). CNN says she wrote about how to do laundry way back in the early 1900s. It involves wood, something called "the Copper", soap chips, a muslin bag, Sunlight soap (who knew?) and something else called Reckitt's Blue.

Anyway, we recommend just watching these videos, because there's nothing cuter than a century-old Australian woman showing you how to use a million year old iron or singing something called "Smile, Smile, Smile." R.I.P. Olive.

Obviously, none of them were written by the man pictured above, a CNN employee who should have no problem getting a second chance, even after violating every one of these rules...

HOW NOT TO GET A SECOND DATE

"Forget" your wallet.

Cry.

Inappropriate disclosure of the personal kind. [Apparently, CNN has never heard of the term "TMI," which would have made this sentence far less awkward, uncomfortable, awkward, and redundant. - Ed.)

Inappropriate disclosure of the medical kind.

Perplexing Puppetry. We've heard horror stories of "men" forgetting their wallets... or worse, using Entertainment Coupons.

Anyway... you can read the rest of this nonsense, along with tiresome explanations, at CNN.com. Huckabee would have been, in happier times, jailed on the spot for threatening the President of the United States. Unfortunately, it appears law enforcement doesn't consider "future Presidents" as being protected from said law...

Reports differ on whether or not the audience approved of his remarks. The earliest reports we saw indicated murmuring and no laughter followed the following, which came after a loud thump or bang from behind the stage:

“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready
to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter.
“Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.” [CNN]

Doesn't that encourage shooting the Presidential candidate? Especially when you encourage that shooting in front of hundreds of NRA members?! You can bet Huckabee would've hounded Obama with this remark, had their roles in this been reversed, all the way to the inaugural, whereas Obama takes the customary high road and refused comment. (We thought he should've used this as a golden opportunity to drive the final stake in Huckabee's political coffin, but then again, we're not wimpy Democratic operatives.)

More on this at CNN, including video.

One of These Things is Not Like the Other

One of these three headlines is fake, the other two appeared on CNN.com on Monday:

A) For this couple, 10th marriage is the charm
B) KKK vendor fights to sell his racist goods
C) Law to make tongue kissing minors a sex offense

They all should be fake, but only one is...

"A) For this couple, 10th marriage is the charm" is fake.
