New Mom Dropped By Insurer For Being Slightly Overweight

The insurance company worried that it would have to take care of children like the ones picture above, based on no evidence other than the mother they were carrying tipped the scales at over 200 pounds.

Anna Holten is a 26-year-old Swedish woman. She stands at about 5' 4" (169cm) and weighs about 220 pounds (100 kg), giving her a BMI of 35. Apparently, this was too much for her insurance company, which dropped her to great public controversy...

Upon learning of her rejection, Holten contacted the Trygg-Hansa risk analyst to explain that she was still trying to work off the weight she gained while pregnant.

“You should have lost the weight by now,” the analyst told her.

According to Trygg-Hansa product manager Björn Sporrong, people with a BMI of 35 are “extremely overweight” and right at his company’s limit for granting coverage.

“Exceedingly overweight people run a significantly higher risk for suffering from many serious diseases,” he told Expressen.

Trygg-Hansa spokesperson Malou Sjörin concurred.

“Even if you’re not sick today, you can be in the future,” Sjörin told the Metro newspaper.

These people wouldn't be able to find anyone to insure if they moved to America-- 220 pounds at 5' 4" is barely considered "overweight" in some states. But that doesn't mean they were wrong to drop Ms. Holden, mother of a seven-month-old baby... or does it?

A new report from the Associated Press/i-Village/The Offices of Captain Obvious claims that women are generally wrong about how healthy they are and how healthy they look.

Survey says...

"The priorities are flipped," says Dr. Molly Poag, chief of psychiatry at New York's Lennox Hill Hospital.

About 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. The AP-iVillage poll of 1,000 adult women mirrors the government's count on that. More surprising, perhaps, are women's attitudes and actions.

Half don't like their weight, even 26 percent of those whose body mass index or BMI -- a measure of weight for height -- is in the normal range. But just a third don't like their physical condition, even though being overweight and sedentary are big risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other ailments.
The poll found women putting in a median of 80 minutes of exercise a week -- meaning half do even less. The average adult is supposed to get 2½ hours of exercise a week for good health.

And just 8 percent of women ate the minimum recommended servings of fruits and vegetables -- five a day. A staggering 28 percent admit they get that recommended serving once a week or less.

So, next time you ask him "How do I look in this?" and he says, "Thin," perhaps he's telling the truth. Here's the only part of the results that truly surprised us:

About a quarter of the women surveyed said they'd consider plastic surgery to feel more beautiful. Their overwhelming choice: a tummy tuck.

We're betting you were going to guess "the United States of America" right off the bat. Don't.

According to a variety of sources, the average bra in the US is a B Cup, more specifically a 34B. (In a widely circulated survey in 2005, Americans were found to be wearing more B cups than C cups, 44% to 28%, and more A cups than D cups, 15% to 10%.)

If you were going to say the United Kingdom has the most double D's, guess again...

Up to 40 per cent of Australian women now buy bras with a cup size of DD or higher, new figures from lingerie suppliers show.

In the 1950s, the most common bra-cup size was a B - three sizes less than a DD.

Modern breasts are getting so large that some bra companies have introduced cup sizes as high as K, The Sunday Telegraphreports.
...sales of DD-plus bras have grown from about 20 per cent of sales to 28 per cent in just five years.

The best line of the whole story explains that boobs are growing because of The Pill and artificial hormones... but, of course, because of obesity, as well. If that's the case, we have to wonder why the World's Fattest Country hasn't enlarged its average cup size.

Meanwhile, a local surgeon says his breast reduction schedule has doubled in recent years.

"There's no question that because the population is bigger their breasts are bigger as well, because it's all fatty tissue.

"As women get older the amount of fatty tissue increases, and also the proportion of fat increases."

Fox is developing a new reality dating show for what producers call "average-looking" people. The show will be similar to The Bachelor but instead of under-fed, over-tanned people desperate to date, the contestants will be over-weight weight women competing for the love of a man who resembles...

Kevin James. (Producers describe him as a "Kevin James-type." Kevin James is that guy from The King of Queens, by the way. We'd prefer a Drew Carey-type, but whatever.)

“For six years it’s been skinny-minis and good-looking bachelors, and that’s not what the dating world looks like,” Mike Darnell of Fox said. “Why don’t real women —the women who watch these shows, for the most part—have a chance to find love too?”

This is a good question, and one that's been ignored too long. But doesn't making a point of singling out the "fatties" just contribute to the bigger problem? If "normal" people are lovable, too, why do they really need their own show? Perhaps the producers could take a cue from Tyra Banks and America's Next Top Model and let some "average-looking people" compete against the "hotties."

And even if she did, so what? It's one thing if she were morbidly obese, but she's not even close to overweight-- and besides, we thought this country had better things to do than criticize a woman's weight.

Earlier this week, Heidi Klum was attacked by a publicity-starved designer for being "too fat" to walk a runway. This German designer, who is too big of a douche to be named here, lest we further his career, is well deserving of the tremendous backlash that his comments were met with.

"Wolfgang is obviously trying to revive his sagging career and get press for himself by riding Heidi''s coattails," the New York Post quoted spokesperson for Klum as saying. [Tim Gunn added] "I can wrap my hand around her bicep."

It's a shame Wolfgang isn't a female person, because we could offer a stockpile of "sagging" puns that would, unfortunately, only stoop to ~~his~~ her low. Anyway, Ol' Saggy Nuts is probably just jealous that his fellow German is more famous than he is... and that Seal won't lend her out for any of Max Mosley's orgies.

Here are some photos from Klum's recent shoot for GQ. Even if they are doctored/Photoshopped, how fake could they be? This woman will be hot until the day she dies, or at least age 67, whichever comes later.

Scanner Emily here. One of my conditions for moving back to Kansas City was that I would not become a fat Midwesterner (others involved not getting knocked up or becoming addicted to meth). To make sure that didn't happen, I signed up for Boot Camp—three very early mornings a week I work out very hard while a very small woman yells very loudly. She also plays music, generally a mix of 80's, 90's and a bunch of super-contemporary stuff I've never heard. But imagine my excitement when this song came on today—while I was working out!

No one else in the class could understand why I worked out a lot harder while this played.

Kansas Citians like to eat. Case in point:

A Kansas City man and his wife were enjoying some ice cream during their Laguna Beach vacation, when, according to the man, two gulls attacked the couple by knocking their ice cream to the ground and then peck, peck, peck, peck, pecking at the man. He said he had no choice but to defend himself against the birds by picking up a stick and beating the fucking life out of them. Well, one of them. The other bird flew off into the sea and hasn't been found. (Read: it flew into the sea to die).

While the loss of any life is, of course, sad, they're just seagulls, right? Right? Nope. Those weren't just any birds the man bludgeoned.

They were, apparently, of a rare breed and now the man, Dragan Djuric, is facing animal cruelty charges.

"That's right," said a Laguna Beach police officer. "He was very upset about spending money for ice cream he didn't get to consume."

Kansas City! Fuck yeah!

In the man's defense, the local Audubon Society said the gulls were a very aggressive breed.

Watch this local reporter re-enact the entire thing while holding onto the weapon, which is still sporting the evidence tag.

Russell Crowe Seeks BBW for Love, Role Play

Russell Crowe is allegedly looking for an older, larger actress to play his female counterpart in the upcoming Nottingham after he threw a fit and had his leading lady fired because she was too thin and beautiful.

Crowe was worried that Sienna Miller would make him look bad in the film's love scenes. He put on weight for his role in Body of Evidence and has since had a hard time taking it off. According to Page Six, producers are now "looking for an older, plumper actress to play the role so [Crowe] doesn't look like a paunchy grandpa. Someone in her late 30s or early 40s."

The Post also speculated that Crowe is trying to get director Ridley Scott fired. No word yet as to who will replace Miller.

Model Suing Google Over Blogger's Mean Remarks

Model Liskula Cohen is suing Google's Blogger.com site to learn the identity of the nasty bully who said all these horrible things about her delightful appearance...

According to the New York Daily News and other sources, the anonymous blog's entries included the following comments about the runway model:

"skank" "old hag" "#1 skanky superstar" "fortysomething" [she's 36] "may have been hot 10 years ago"
[and it's headlined] "Desperation seeps from her soul, if she even has one,"

Sounds like she has a bitter rival-- another model, perhaps, jealous of her supposed fling with David Schwimmer (you heard it here first-- but don't sue is, Ms. Cohen!)

Liskula responded in kind (well, a "liveandlove" did, but we have our theories who that is a cover for) on the post, which is now missing in action:

"Are you one of those little dumpy girls who hang off her every word? Or do you wait three hours in line at a club, when she breezes right in? [You're a] silly, silly fat girl.
"Tell me, are you easier to walk over or around?"

Yo, men: does your waist measure more than 42 inches? Do you exercise less than 30 minutes a day? If the answer to both of those questions is yes, you might be putting yourself at risk for something much worse than wearing sweat pants while riding around on your motorized scooter stuffing McDonald's in your face.

According to a new study, overweight, out of shape men are at a much higher risk for erectile dysfunction than those who exercise at least 30 minutes a day and have a 32-inch waistline.

It should be noted that the study was funded by the National Cancer Institute, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and the American Cancer Society, three organizations that want you to be fit and healthy. However,

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) also found strong links between obesity and impotence. When obesity was combined with smoking, the risk of impotence was even greater.

Reporting in The Journal of Urology, HSPH’s Constance Bacon said they studied more than 22,000 men aged between 40 and 75 who news releases said they had good erections prior to smoking and being obese. After that, things started to go downhill. They also found that regular physical activity could lower the risk of impotence.

"We found a 2.5-fold difference in the risk of erectile dysfunction when we compared obese men who did little exercise with men who were not overweight send press releases averaged 30 minutes of vigorous exercise a day. For men younger than 55, there was a four-fold difference in risk for the same comparison," said co-researcher Eric Rimm.

More recently, the link between inactivity and impotence was confirmed by Johns Hopkins researchers. In their study published in The American Journal of Medicine, the researchers found a high prevalence of impotence among men with hypertension and diabetes.

Still, we have to question the newsworthiness of this particular study based entirely on the last paragraph of the "story."

To prevent impotence, eat the right foods, watch your weight, and exercise regularly. If you have the misfortune of being impotent, don’t despair since the pr distribution is treatable. Seek medical help as early as possible to avoid complications later. Yesterday we had a burrito from Chipotle. It was delicious. It also had 943 calories. And it didn't even have any meat in it! How do we know we consumed so many calories with one not-so-very-little burrito? We used the Chipotle Nutrition Facts Calculator, that's how. And, well, it's time to cut the sour cream; it would have saved us 120 calories!

Here's how it works: you just go to this site and plug in what you had on your burrito or in your tacos. Then you can feel guilty and go run or purge or whatever you need to do to feel okay about eating a 1,000 calorie burrito. We just sat and contemplated it. You can do that, too.

According to a new study, women with a higher than normal BMI have better sex lives. Well, depending on what your idea of "better" is.

After researchers contacted more than 7,500 women aged 15-44 across the nation and interviewe them about their sexual behavior, they found that those women with above average BMI's are more likely (or have had) history of sex with a man.

What this means, exactly, we're not sure. Especially considering roughly 63% of the American population is considered overweight or obese.

It's probably too early, too general and too in our dreams to say men don't like skinny bitches.

Carrying extra fat around your middle dramatically increases your risk of early death, even if your overall weight is normal, say researchers.

A study of almost 360,000 people from nine European countries found waist size a "powerful indicator" of risk.

Each extra 2ins (5cm) raised the chance of early death by between 13% and 17%.

Ugh. We're hard-pressed to get rid of our gut. This just makes us want to throw in the towel and eat a double bacon cheeseburger. With mayo.

World's Fattest Man Marries, Doesn't Eat Cake

As the weather cools down, everyone seems to get a little blue. All of my friends (and myself) complain that their waistlines expand as the temperature drops. The bicycles go into storage and the idea of getting up to run when it's dark and cold outside is completely unappealing. We crave comfort food. Perhaps some meat on some bread with some cheese on it. Deep-fried potatoes on the side would be nice. They'd be even better dipped in mayonnaise. So, yeah, we're all feeling fat. And perhaps lonely; the colder it gets, the more we want someone warm to cuddle with.

Well, friends, if the world's fattest man—who hasn't even left his bed in six years can get married—you (and I) should have hope that our fat asses won't be all alone in our cold beds this winter.

Yesterday, Uribe married his longtime girlfriend Claudia Solis.

Wearing a white silk shirt with a sheet wrapped around his legs, Uribe smiled as Solis, 38, walked down a flight of stairs wearing a strapless ivory dress, a tiara and hot-pink lipstick.

He later broke into tears as a notary declared the couple husband and wife in a civil ceremony attended by more than 400 guests. For the traditional first dance as newlyweds, Uribe and Solis held hands and swayed to a romantic ballad.

A popular local norteno band played accordion-heavy tunes at the reception, which featured a banquet of meat and buttered vegetables.

Uribe's mother, Orquedia Garza, said the groom steered clear of the five-tier wedding cake.

"He didn't break his diet," she told The Associated Press. "His doctors are here and they are watching him very closely."

Have you ever wondered why you get really excited about food, while other people eat it purely because they have to to survive—just like they have to put gas in their cars or drink water or put on clothes every day? Well, we wonder all the time. You probably know by now how much we love food, and when we say there's "Food We'd Like to Fuck" we really just mean we want to eat it in the most amazing way possible. So, yeah, we like food. But why, or how, do some other people eat it just because they have to?

While we're sad those people don't get to enjoy food the way we do, we certainly envy them, or rather, their waistlines.

But it turns out that the difference between how much we love the milkshakes and how much they love the milkshakes might have more to do with science than how much comfort food our parents gave us as children.

In a study of young girls and women, scientists tested the brain's response to a "highly palatable food" - chocolate milkshakes. They found that the part of the brain that releases the feel-good chemical dopamine in response to eating is less active in the obese.

The effect was most pronounced in women born with a gene that reduces their dopamine output by up to 30 to 40 per cent. Not only did their brains show the most blase or blunted reaction to the milkshake, but also, they were more likely to gain weight over the next year.

Scientists discovered it takes more food for obese people to experience the same 'high' as lean people, much as what happens with alcohol or drug abuse. 'If you want to avoid obesity, don't start walking down that path,' said Eric Stice, lead author of the report.

Published in this week's issue of the journal Science, the study is one of the first to show how individual differences in how the brain processes food reward "might put people at risk for overeating given this environment where there's just lots of really palatable food available," said co-author Dana Small, associate professor at Yale University.

The study underscores just how complex the brain's control or response to food is, says a Canadian obesity expert.

"It's quite an exciting study," said Dr. David Lau, chair of the diabetes and endocrine research group at the University of Calgary and president of Obesity Canada. "What they found was that overweight people have less excitatory response. They have to eat more in order to arrive at the same kind of satisfactory signals."

Researchers say it may be possible to turn on the dopamine response using drugs or behavioural therapies.

This could also explain why we can't have just a little sex, or a little whiskey:

It is true that when we go without any of these things for an extended period of time (sex, alcohol, sugar, bacon), we start to think we can live without it.

World's Fattest Man is 550 Pounds and 24 Days Closer to Endless Love

Manuel Uribe didn't lose 550 pounds just for the hell of it. No, the World's Fattest Man is in love. And he might have a tuxedo (and perhaps a vagina?) to squeeze into.

Uribe will marry his girlfriend of four years, Claudia Solis, in Monterrey, Mexico on October 26. And now that we think of it, there's probably no tuxedo to squeeze into; he'll be wheeled to the ceremony because he still can't get out of bed.

Considering he spends all of this time in bed, and is rarely wearing clothes and is about to get married, one can't help but wonder if, and how, this man has sex.

Top 5 Most Offensive Commericals We Can Think Of At The Moment

We've been so busy renting DVDs from a certain mail order/internet service that we haven't watched television, certainly not television with commercial interruption, for what seems like years now. So it's a very jarring experience to go over Scanner Emily's house, eat casseroles, and watch something from the modern era called The Biggest Loser and stare in mute agony at the barrage of filth and garbage that gets thrown back in our faces. By the advertisers, of course.

This got us thinking about how grateful we are not to see commericals, especially this atrocious fivesome, ever again. Here are five television ads someone hopefully got fired over...

5. "Racist" McDonald's African-themed commercial. 'Nuff said.

4. When the guy gets out of the car in the beginning of this Credit MacDaddy commercial, we were deathly afraid it would be a zombified Rick James.

3. Forget whether the makers and signer-offers of this ad should be fired, they should downright be imprisoned for exploiting our veterans for monetary gain. It's so bad, it'll almost make you forget about the Republican Party's exploitation of 9/11 victims for political gain... naw, not really...

2. This one's just probably offensive to our intelligence. Although we don't even want to think about the possible number of people who actually trusted that guy with their money.

1. The top ad here (Senator Chambliss' ad against then-incumbet Democratic Senator and Vietnam Vet Max Cleland), which famously linked a man who lost limbs for his country to Osama Bin Laden (and succeeded in defeating that man), is easily the most offensive commercial in human history. Here's a bonus... a commercial that's either a) extremely offensive or b) not offensive at all, depending on your point of view. Just staying neutral on this one, we have to admit it's hard to explain why this might be offensive. Maybe it's that it's not effective... or that it turns domestic violence into a Hollywood action sequence... or that it's just plain terrible and a waste of money better spent actually helping victims of spousal abuse.

We couldn't bring ourselves to post pictures of major manboobs, so this will have to do.

Are you a man? Do you drink instant coffee and/or eat Brazilian nuts? No? Okay, good, we'll still be your friend.

However, if you're a man who does either of these things, you're in danger of growing manboobs, according to a strange new study...

The products contained far higher levels of gender-bending chemicals, known as phytoestrogens, than previously thought.
Dr Gunter Kuhnle, of the MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit in Cambridge, analysed 500 foods and drinks.
Instant coffee had 1,833 micrograms of the oestrogen-like chemicals per 100g, while Brazil nuts had 867 micrograms.
Phytoestrogens are known to cause fertility problems in animals and may give women a greater risk of breast cancer.

This was reported in the Sun (UK), so don't take our word for it. After all, the MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit in Cambridge sounds like half the spam e-mails in our inbox right now... but, just to be on the safe side, maybe avoid that stuff for now?

Sony apparently forgot that there are, surprise, women who play video games. More importantly, they forgot that feminists play video games and can raise a big stink on the interblogs if they they think your game is unfunny, sexist, and more out of touch than George W. Bush...

Fat Princess is a capture-the-flag game with a twist: you can thwart capture attempts by locking the once-thin princess in a dungeon and stuffing her full of cake, thereby increasing her girth and making her harder for your enemies to haul back to home base.

The ladyblogs had trouble deciding what to attack first...

Melissa McEwan of Shakesville writes: "Congrats on your awesome new game, Sony. I'm positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes."

Zing! Wait, what does that mean?

Feminist Gamer's "Mighty Ponygirl" suggests a simple gameplay switcheroo would solve the problem (and change the title). "Instead of running out into the forest to find cake to fatten up the princess with, why not go out and find gold (which is a lot heavier than cake) to stuff into a treasure chest," she says, adding, "The more gold in the chest, the heavier it would be, and the harder it would be to carry."

That's a great idea! Then again, Sony isn't interested in having their video games make sense or insulting fewer than half the population of the world. Nope, they just say "let those feminists eat cake-- literally." And male gamers are apparently backing them up-- check out the comments on Joystiq:

Fat women would be better served by getting up and exercising and eating less. They would have more energy, better self image and feel more confident. They might find a boyfriend, even perhaps, love. But you know, its like hard to do that stuff, and its easy to complain on the internet!
Women will cry about anything.

If it were "Fat Prince" and you had to carry an obese dude around nobody would care. Except maybe Prince.

However, a female commenter had a reaction similar to ours:

If anything, I think they're attacking the wrong concept. Who cares if she's fat or gets fed? It's way more offensive that the princess is treated as an object (in replacement of a flag) and helpless (she can't even move on her own) and unable to do anything about her situation (or refuse food). But I know that the designers weren't being pig-headed, they were just trying to be creative, and they succeeded.

Mean Girls: Dietician Monica Grenfell

Across the pond, a beautiful size 16 teenager is still in the running toward becoming the U.K.'s next top Miss England. But the editors of The Daily Mail have had a heyday with 17-year-old Chloe Marshall, printing articles mocking her size, and last week the paper brought on a "dietician" to pen an op-ed calling Marshall "fat, lazy and a poster girl for ill health."

In the piece, Monica Grenfell doesn't laud the teenager for being brave and self confident (like we do), but instead says Chloe is sending the wrong message to young girls:

"In my view, Chloe is a terrible role model. I hope she doesn't win the Miss England title. It would send an appalling - and very dangerous - message to other young women that it's OK to be fat. Chloe is a stark reminder that obesity is now virtually normal in our society - and we should all be hanging our heads in shame.

She is an ambassador not for the beautiful larger lady as she'd have us believe but a poster girl for diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, cancers and all the other devastating and potentially fatal health problems that are caused or exacerbated by obesity...

As a judge on last year's Miss England contest, I was hugely impressed, not just by the beauty but by the skills dedication and determination of the contestants. For example, most had raised huge sums of money for their favourite charities. They shone out as young women to be admired. But can the same really be said of Chloe?
At 5ft 10in, Chloe should have a body mass index, or BMI, (indicating her levels of fat) of 20. Hers is 26.03... It's a total fallacy that young girls are being pressured into near-starving themselves into being too thin...
If Chloe chooses to be curvy, that's fine. It is, after all, her personal choice. But it's time she stopped telling the rest of us that being fat is great and that the only way to be a healthy weight is by starving yourself. It's dangerous nonsense."

Uh, okay. We disagree and our size 10/12 would like to challenge Ms. Grenfell to an op-ed writing contest. Then to a brawl. Then to a hot dog eating contest. Then to another brawl. Who's with us?

P.S. It should be noted that we think beauty pageants are stupid. Really fucking stupid.
