It's the Miss Fag Hag Pageant!

Finally, a pageant we can get behind!

The Miss Fag Hag Pageant will be held at Comix in NYC on May 17th. It will benefit the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk School.

Ten hags, each representing her own gayborhood, will compete, and judges include Caroline Rhea and Michael Musto.

Please meet some of our favorite contestants.

Miss Bedford-Stuyvesant, JQ:

Dream Friday Night: Going to the club, getting in free cuz I'm so fly in my tight dress and three inch heels with my Beyonce weave staying intact while men encircle me and adore me while buying me drinks and having one pay for my cab ride home!"

Miss West Village, Heather Shields:

Dream Friday Night: Cocktails in a friend's apartment, while watching the Sylvia episode of Intervention. My "husband" gets the idea to go on an adventure, where we and our drunken parade paint the town- pit stops would include: our favorite underground speakeasy, a campy cabaret, and a karaoke rendition of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"... We usually don't remember after this...

Why Heather Should be Miss Fag Hag: I deserve it. Me and my fag live in the same home, work in the same restaurant, have all the same friends, even refer publicly to one another as "husband" and "wife."

Miss East Village, Elisa Vogel:

Why Elisa should be Miss Fag Hag: "I've ben told the following more than once: I'm almost a gay man, "Judy Garland reincarnated, which is why you're loved by the gays."

Well, I truly wish I could be there and scout for a gay of my own. This makes me miss New York!

L.A. Rag Mag has a post concerning Marlon Brando's secret but not-so-secret gay life, accompanied by a very NSFW photo to back it up. The infamous photo of Brando fellating his man-friend and roommate Wally Cox had been circulating for years, but apparently was just purchased by LA Rag Mag. (Why bother doing that if it's already on the Internet? That's what Gawks said.)

What was news to us were the quotes attributed to Brando regarding his homosexual tendencies.

"If Wally had been a woman, I would have married him and we would have lived happily ever after."

And here's another one from 1976.

“Homosexuality is so much in fashion it no longer makes news. Like a large number of men, I, too, have had homosexual experiences and I am not ashamed. I have never paid much attention to what people think about me.”

And Brando's ashes were even scattered with Cox'.

The Gay Marriage Debate Rages on in California

Yesterday the California Supreme Court met to deliberate on the issue of gay marriage in the state yet again, after the court's May ruling to allow same-sex couples to marry was reversed when voters approved Proposition 8 in November.

The hearing lasted more than three hours and though the seven justices all seemed to agree that the 18,000 same-sex couples who married legally before Prop. 8 passed would remain legally wed, it appears the court may be leaning in favor of Prop. 8

"Here we are dealing with the power of the people, the inalienable right, to amend the Constitution," Justice Joyce Kennard, who voted in favor of legalizing gay marriage in May, said.

What else was heard at the hearing? And what did Kenneth Starr have to say?

"A guarantee of equality that is subject to exceptions by the majority is no guarantee at all."

-Therese Stewart, San Francisco chief deputy city attorney, arguing that Prop. 8 violates equal-rights principles in the state Constitution

"The people established the Constitution. As judges, our power is very limited."

-Justice Joyce Kennard

"Is it for this court to limit the people's power to amend the Constitution?"

-Chief Justice Ronald George

"Proposition 8 does not erode any of the bundle of rights that this state has very generously provided" to same-sex couples.

"If you're in the marriage business, do it equally. If you're not going to do it equally, then get out of the marriage business."

-Michael Maroko, a lawyer for same-sex couples, replying to a question about whether the court should reserve the name "marriage" for religious ceremonies and convert existing civil marriages to civil unions

"It would exceed the power of this court."

Florida Pastor Wants Us to Have Sex!

This guy is a Pastor and he believes people should have sex-- and not the unprotected, married kind of sex that may result in 14 babies. The other kind-- the kind that people actually want to have!

"You tend to hear about the 'Thou shalt nots,' " Underwood said. "We want to talk about the 'Thou shalts.'"

In a story in today's Palm Beach Post, Pastor Ray Underwood explains why he's chosen to feature sex advice in his Sunday sermons for the past several weeks (and through March 1st.) Among the choice excerpts:

"I think we should be more aggressive and upfront about talking about critical issues in people's lives. In the past, I think we were embarrassed and unsure about ourselves."
Underwood gave his first sermon, "Hot Monogamy," a PG-11 rating and suggested that parents take kids under that age to the child care center. A video projected on the church's big screen said, "so ... sex in church? Are we really going to talk about this? We need to." Though it could be kind of weird, the video warned — "like seeing a nude scene with your parents."
"We try to stay real, but this is a little more on the edge," he said. "Hopefully we won't fall off a cliff."

We personally hope you succeed, Pastor Ray, for if there's one thing religion needs, it's more sex. No, seriously-- perhaps if people were happier about their love lives, they'd leave the gays, Democrats, and other religions in peace.

And if anyone's going to make that happen, it's this guy:

Underwood often preaches in jeans, and the church's services feature video, drums and electric guitar. Though the church's style is edgy, he said, its message is more conservative.

Don't you sometimes love watching wacko religious zealots from afar via the magic of the Internets? We do, too, but it's also really disturbing, not to mention confusing. We've watched the following video from the infamous haters at the Westboro Baptist Church several times and still aren't clear on the connections these singing people in the church basement are making between raping priests, Santa Claus, hell, and faggotry.

There's a little more explanation about this extremist organization on their Wikipedia entry, but basically the WBC claims that the acceptance of homosexuals is to blame for all that goes wrong in the world.

eHarmony, Let The Gays Begin!

eHarmony, the online matchmaking site that infamously rejected the gay community (and Scanner Emily) now begrudgingly offers their services to love-seeking homosexuals (but not Emily).

After numerous lawsuits, eHarmony will be forced to service gays and lesbians (zing!). The AP reports that this is, in particular, due to a 2005 settlement in a suit filed by Eric McKinley of New Jersey who demanded not to be subject to discrimination when he was prevented from joining the site because he was gay.

But eHarmony couldn't actually let the gays use their site. The company has created a new agency (We know, it’s all very “Separate but Equal”) so passionately titled, Compatible Partners (we were expecting eCacophony) will launch this March, just in time for Valentine’s Day to be long gone.

Jerks.

Don't worry, we're not talking about the Godfather Part IV. It's actually the basis of a major, 250-million-dollar federal racketeering suit against the Church of Scientology that names Tom Cruise as the Don Vito of the modern era...

According to the New York Daily News, Tom Cruisader is named as one of the heads of the Mafia-like family known as the Cult of Scientology by Peter Letterese, a former Scientologist, who is using the RICO statues against Tom and co., naming them in his $250 mil suit in a Florida court. The suit claims, for starters,

that members of the church harassed him after he left... a member of the church phoned his lawyer at home, and when the lawyer's wife answered, said he was her husband's homosexual lover.

Wait, we thought the Church hated the gays... why would they say that? They're so goofy/kooky, those alien worshipers. Anyway, did you guys see Godfather 2?

Letterese calls the church a "crime syndicate" and wants it broken up under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization law, just as the feds have broken up Mafia families.

How much you wanna bet that, despite the general good idea of trying the Church for conspiracy and fraudulent activities, this is not going to make it to a verdict? And by that we mean, the suit is not only thrown out but all records of it, including this blog post, are charred and incinerated?

Ted Haggard: Busting Out of the Spiritual Restoration Center

Praise the sweet baby Jesus Lord! Ted Haggard has been cured of his gayness... or has wisened up to the fact that he can't be cured of it.

The AP reports that the former evangelical preacher who was forced out of his job after reports of his relationship with a gay prostitute has left the "spiritual restoration program," he attened after the scandal broke, but is not allowed to comment on why.

Under a severance deal that Ted Haggard reached with the church in 2006, he agreed to leave Colorado Springs and not talk about the scandal publicly. The deal expired at the end of 2007. New pastor Brady Boyd said Haggard was now free to live where he wanted and has returned to Colorado Springs.

"They have moved back and they live in the original house that they lived in for many years," Boyd said of Haggard and his wife, Gayle.

This makes us think of that movie with the terribly hot Clea DuVall and the not-so-hot Natasha Lyonne, "But I'm a Cheerleader," in which teenagers are sent away to a home to rid them of their homosexual tendencies.

New research suggests that there's a reason gay men share more than just a love of cock with straight women.

Apparently our brains are similar.

Using MRI technology, researchers at the Stockholm Brain Institute in Sweden learned that:

[T]he right-hand brain hemisphere was larger in heterosexual men and homosexual women, while homosexual men's and heterosexual women's brain hemispheres were symmetrical.
Homosexual men showed another brain similarity with heterosexual women in their amygdala connections, which process certain emotions, as did homosexual women and straight men.
"The amygdala has a key role in emotional reactions to external stimuli, including stress," the authors of the study said, hypothesizing that the amygdala of straight men and gay women could be "wired for a greater fight-or-flight response," reportedly more common in men.

If even half of California's gay couples decide to marry now that gay marriage is legal there, the state could make a helluva lot more than Sex and the City raked in its opening weekend.

According to a new study, if 50 percent of California's 92,000 gay couples actually do marry, the state's economy could receive $370 million over the next three years.

Apparently this is because the gays are fabulous:

Gays have higher incomes and are less likely to cut corners on their wedding rites and receptions. According to PlanetOut, gay consumers have 20 percent higher income than heterosexuals and would likely spend 10 percent higher than traditional couples would on their wedding day.

Reading Scanner is So Gay!

If you're reading this, you must be gay. Okay, not exactly, but according to a recent study 51% of gay and lesbian adults read and respond to blogs, compared to 36% of heterosexual adults.

According to our own independent, unscientific study, if you're reading this, you're also super cool and deserve a cookie.

But back to the gay thing:

When asked, just over half (51 percent) of the gay and lesbian respondents reported reading some type of blog, compared to 36 percent of heterosexual adults. A similar question on blog readership also was asked in November 2006, and at that time 32 percent of gay and lesbian adults then reported reading blogs...

Regarding the varied interests of blogs, the survey found 28 percent of gay and lesbian adults reported reading news and current issue blogs, compared to 19 percent of heterosexuals. More than a quarter (26%) of gay and lesbian adults also read entertainment and pop culture blogs, compared to 11 percent of heterosexuals. Given the heightened interest in this year’s electoral contests, a significant number, nearly one-quarter (23%), of gay and lesbian adults also read political blogs. In comparison, only 14 percent of heterosexual adults reported reading political blogs.

Two lesbian mothers are fighting over custody of thier child; one of them is using an anti-gay law to skewer the court's favor.

Basically, one woman, Therese Leach, who is not the biological mother of "her" son, is arguing in an Ohio court that a 2001 court-approved agreement between her and her son's mother should be upheld, regardless of the fact that the state passed an anti-gay marriage amendment in January 2005. Lamda Legal, who is defending Ms. Leach, argues that the agreement should not be invalidated merely because gays are not allowed to marry in Ohio. We say to anti-gay activists: "Is this what you intended when your bigoted law was passed? Taxpayer dollars going to waste over a silly fight like this?"

These activists, mainly Christians, should take the words of Wendy Gritter, director of the Christian group New Direction, to their ever-loving hearts:

"I believe we have a long way to go to eradicate hateful and homophobic environments and responses in the Christian community. We have a long way to go to demolish the pervasive hierarchy of sin. And we have a long way to go to counter-act the perpetual sense of shame that many experience due to the reality of their same-gender attraction." [Religious Left]

While we seriously doubt the Bush-approved Supreme Court will do a damn thing in the way of fighting these nutjobs if this case ever turns up on their docket, maybe the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will see the light:

Attorneys for a student who was punished by Poway High School officials for wearing an anti-gay T-shirt to school are asking a federal appeals court to declare unconstitutional a school policy against offensive speech under which the student was punished. [Gay.blogspot.com]

The problem here is that, while big supporters of every aspect of free speech, in this case, schools are guaranteed by law (and many, many previous court rulings) the right to ask students to remove any items that are distracting to the learning environment. We wholeheartedly support that policy-- although in case like this, we're admittedly biased. (Let's fight these douche's any way we can.)

And although we support the gay community and its right to simply be left alone, we kind of relate to the issue here:

Gay naturists have been granted their own swimming sessions at a public baths – to the fury of families who also use the pool. Several parents have withdrawn their children from lessons there. The gay naturist group, Naked Swim, books the pool and saunas one night every week. [Gay News]

Remember when we said we could kind of relate? We were fucking with you. Would these same people, if faced with an all-black nude swimming session, raise such a fuss? (This is England, not Tennessee, mind you.)

Gay Iranian Teen Denied Asylum in The Netherlands

Nineteen-year-old Mehdi Kazemi said his boyfriend was executed in Iran after admitting to being in a gay relationship. So when Kazemi, an Iranian, was denied asylum in Britian where he was staying on a student visa, he fled to The Netherlands and sought refuge there. Now, The Netherlands has rejected his request for asylum, as well.

A Council of State spokesperson said that for the Dutch court to consider Kazemi's asylum application, he would have had to prove that Britian incorrectly handled his application there. Because Kazemi was not able to prove that, The Netherlands would not grant him asylum.

He is now being allowed back into Britan, for a short while:

Kazemi's lawyer will have the option of taking his case to the European Court of Human Rights to request an "interim measure" that could allow Kazemi to stay in Europe until further notice.

"If anybody signs his deportation papers and says, look, he's got to be deported to Iran, that means they have signed his death sentence," said Kazemi's uncle Saeed, who asked CNN to withhold his last name over safety concerns.

Gay rights activists in Europe and Iran are also researching Kazemi's case.

"When Britain is prepared to send a young man back to possible execution, that is inhumanity on a monumental scale," said Peter Tatchell, an activist for gay campaign group OutRage. "And I hang my head in shame, as a British citizen."

In a written statement, Britain's Home Office said that even though homosexuality is illegal in Iran and homosexuals do experience discrimination, it does not believe that homosexuals are routinely persecuted purely on the basis of their sexuality.

George Bush Hit on A Gay Guy

Apparently, there was only one thing worth paying attention to during Monday night's State of the Union speech, and not only did everyone outside the building miss it, but we're just hearing about it now.

According to the Boston Globe, when Herr Bush entered the lobby of the House of Representatives, openly gay Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank was on the phone with his boyfriend. "Oh," said the unelected President, caressing the Congressman's shoulder, "Tell him I say hello."

Of course, Bush couldn't have known it was Frank's boyfriend... or did he? (Don't believe it? Then how did he know it was a guy? Hmm? Hmm?) Barney, never to let a good news story die, approached Bush following the droning 50-minute speech. You decide:

Frank sought out the president, who put his hand on the back of the congressman's head to hear him more clearly in the noisy, crowded room.

"Mr. President, by the way, the person I was talking to when you said to say hello was my boyfriend,'' Frank said he told the commander-in-chief.

"Well. I hope you said how open-minded I am,'' Frank said the president replied.
"I considered telling [the president] I wouldn't marry him,'' Frank said, "but then I thought, 'Nah.' ''
