Rolling Stone Turns to Gossip Girl to Remain Semi-Relevant

Rolling Stone is desperate to stay afloat. This is not news. They reduced the size of their magazines to cut production costs, featured Barack Obama (America's #1 celebrity!) on its cover, and generally tried to appease the again hippies that still subscribe while attracting lame Britney Spears fans that dominate the culture.

This month, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, and the rest of the Gossip Gals are featured on the cover and are interviewed in the most tiresome fashion ("get the dirt on what it’s like starring as beautiful young people in New York while being beautiful young people in New York.")

The photo shoot, though, is at least the usual skanky jamboree...

Here are our favorite excerpts from the excerpts of the forthcoming article:

“No one’s going to accuse Gossip Girl of being The Wire or Mad Men, but if you roll with the fantasy/absurdity, it’s fun to watch, from the infighting to the insane clothes and snappy dialogue.”
“They’ve all reached the point where they’re in the public eye, but they’re not rolling around in blacked-out SUVs or being chased around like Madonna. A lot of them take the subway and they still complain about the price of rents and monthly car parking,” Gay reveals. “They’re in a nice place in their careers. Without ado, the Five Best Sex Scenes That We Were Able To Find On The Internet And Could Embed Here... Part One. Suggestions, as always, for the next wave, in the comments section...

5. Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders. With a whopping 3.9-out-of-ten ranking on IMDB, you would be forgiven for not having heard of this via word-of-mouth. But now that Brittany Snow has been chosen to star in the Gossip Girl spinoff, expect this awful/true story to be repackaged in a useless Director's Cut DVD, complete with this sex scene stretched four milliseconds longer.

4. Factotum. If Marisa Tomei weren't in this scene, it wouldn't even have occurred to us to include it. After all, unless you consider dual finger-bangs "sex," this isn't much of a sex scene. But... again... Marisa Tomei, people...

3. Threesome. For a movie with sexual innuendo in the title, there isn't enough actual sex here. However, this clip does feature Lara Flynn Boyle getting talked "dirty" to over the phone while Stephen Baldwin goes down on her in person-- that counts, right? Oh, and there's an almost hot scene starting about 3:30 in with actual one-on-one sex. (The phone stuff starts at about 5:30.)

2. Wild Things. Jesus H! Is Matt Dillon in every great threesome in Hollywood history? You think he writes them in after signing his contract or will he not even agree to a role unless there's some menage goin' on? For us, the movie never gets finer than the opening scene, where a soap-sudsy Denise Richards stands dripping in Dillon's doorway, but everyone seems to think this is hotter 'n hell, so here goes...

1. American Psycho. "In terms of lyrics craftsmanship... this album hits new peaks of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you dance a little?" In another director's hands, this would've been too unsettling to be darkly humorous. Is the film over-the-top, obvious, excessively violent and ultimately not the greatest movie? Absolutely. Is this sex scene near-genius? You put that in granite and stamp it on a business card.

In what will surely finally give 30 Rock the huge ratings boost it deserves, the NBC comedy series has announced a series of high profile guest stars, including Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey.

But what should really do it for them is this idea for a guest appearance, which is apparently confirmed by the producers...

How about the ladies of Gossip Girl showing up on MILF Island, as sort of "foils" for the MILFS? While that problem won't happen, Blake, Leighton, and possibly other players of uppity snots will show up at Rockefeller Center in some capacity:

Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively and Leighton Meester have reportedly signed a deal to guest-star on U.S. TV show 30 Rock.
The actresses, who play spoiled students in their hit TV series, will feature in a Gossip Girl-inspired flashback sequence on 30 Rock during main character Liz Lemon's 20-year high school reunion, according to Ew.com.
But fans of the programme will be in for a shock as the sequence will reveal geeky Lemon, who is played by the sitcom's creator Tina Fey, was actually a bullying teenager.

That isn't reall much of a twist-- we've already seen that Liz has a much crazier side that she wants us to believe... but either way, this should be a great third season, don't ya think?

John McCain, meanwhile, is having a grand ol' time with the media: first, it seemed certain he would choose Charlie Crist. Earlier this week, Joe Lieberman was the odds-on favorite. Today, it's Mitt Romney-- with rumors of an 8/31 Michigan rally seeming to back up the possibility of Romney versus anyone else. (By the time he makes the announcement, we're pretty sure Condi will be back in the running. Hell, maybe even Cheney, just for laughs.)

Hell, I won't even stay in the same room when Gossip Girl is on, it's like The Spice Girls of TV: people know it's terrible, but they get caught up in its infectiousness and in ten years will act as if they don't remember buying in.

Anyway, Blake Lively is an exception. As we've mentioned here before, it seems very unlikely she will make the same life choices and career mistakes of a Lindsay Lohan or some of the other young starlets of this century. But that doesn't mean we're standing tall about this appreciation either...

A little over a month ago, we excerpted a Vanity Fair story about the next crop of young celebrities. This was what we took from the Blake Lively section:

Those judgments still stand, plus our approval of this remark:

In [her] Teen Vogue interview, when asked if she was dating Penn Badgley, Lively said that “I try not to talk about my dating life. I want to, but once you start, it’s all downhill from there.”

Hear, hear. Stay out of the tabloids and gossip pages and-- wait, gossip pages? Isn't she the star of "Gossip Girl?" Whatever. This just goes to show that Lively may transcend the show-- and Hollywood-- altogether. It's about time somebody broke out of the mental hospital...

Obviously, Blake Lively is a celebrity and Scanner digs her bad attitude and sort-of just-out-of-an-angry-publicist's-reach no-bullshit way of conducting interviews (thank God, there may be hope for intelligent life to come out of this generation), but what about the rest of them? Is Vanity Fair just manufacturing fame or will these four go on to big things? (Don't forget that many of the Vanity Fair cover models, including Gretchen Mol, peaked with their VF covers and haven't been heard from since.)

We watch Gossip Girl when we remember that it's on, which isn't very often, but correct us if we're wrong: wasn't it originally intended for teenagers? Boozing, copulating, mature beyond their age teenagers, we have to assume, because these new steamy ads should at least have a NC-17 rating.

'Twas not too long ago we were teenagers watching Dawson's Creek and thinking to ourselves that the mere mention of sex handled so casually by Katie Holmes was scandalous for the then WB. Looking back, that shit was as mild as Sesame Street compared to Gossip Girl. And we kind-of like it, which kind-of makes us feel like pedophiles, or sad, old farts.

On that note, we're pretty sure Blake Lively (Serena) is having an orgasm in the following ad, and that is so not Dan giving it to her.
