About 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. The
AP-iVillage poll of 1,000 adult women mirrors the government's count on
that. More surprising, perhaps, are women's attitudes and actions.

Half don't like their weight, even 26 percent of those whose body
mass index or BMI -- a measure of weight for height -- is in the normal
range. But just a third don't like their physical condition, even
though being overweight and sedentary are big risk factors for Type 2
diabetes, heart disease and other ailments.

The poll found women putting in a median of 80 minutes of exercise a
week -- meaning half do even less. The average adult is supposed to get
2½ hours of exercise a week for good health.

And just 8 percent of women ate the minimum recommended servings of
fruits and vegetables -- five a day. A staggering 28 percent admit they
get that recommended serving once a week or less.

So, next time you ask him "How do I look in this?" and he says, "Thin," perhaps he's telling the truth. Here's the only part of the results that truly surprised us:

About a quarter of the women surveyed said they'd consider plastic
surgery to feel more beautiful. Their overwhelming choice: a tummy tuck.

Does that ring true for you?

Via Chicago Sun-Times.

Related:

Today in WTF: Crying Japanese Sumo Baby Contest

Food We Do NOT Want To F*ck (Or Eat, For That Matter): Domino's

Aria Giovanni Wants To Show You How To Do Something

Ever Wonder What Your Body Would Taste Like To A Cannibal?

You're "Doing It" Wrong: Health Website's Wrongheaded Sex Advice

The Stanford University School of Medicine released a report today with shocking revelations about lies, fabrications, and downright stupidity on the internet.

Why is this different from everything else that's wrong with the internet? Because Stanford is blaming WebMD and other trusted medical websites for the backlash against Plan B, not to mention multiple other "mistakes" in the advice these sites cough up about sex...

Here are the most disturbing examples we picked up, quoted directly from a source at HealthNewsDigest, which covered the report:

sites often failed to say that minors can buy emergency
contraception from authorized pharmacists in nine states

many
sites did not correct the myth that emergency contraception causes an
abortion

Sixty percent of the Web sites said the birth control
pill causes weight gain, despite recent research showing modern oral
contraceptives do not affect body weight

Only 19 percent of the
Web sites made it clear that intrauterine devices are safe for
adolescents to use.

only about half of the Web sites surveyed correctly
stated that some STDs, such as herpes, can be transmitted through
skin-to-skin contact or kissing

Forty percent of Web sites surveyed did not provide
accurate information about when young women should receive their first
Pap exam. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology updated its
Pap exam recommendations in 2003 to state that women should receive
their first exam three years after initiating sexual activity or at age
21; that is about three years later than the previous recommendations [“Extra Pap exams are an unnecessary stress and expense,
and a barrier to getting birth control,” Yen said, since young women
may forgo contacting a doctor for a contraceptive prescription if they
mistakenly believe they must first get the exam.]

Researchers indicted that sites like Go Ask Alice, a product of Columbia University, are much more reliable. For example, here's their advice on giving a decent handjob, something we'll bet WebMD doesn't have the balls to pull. So, kids, if for some reason you're reading this after doing a Google search for "sex advice," go there first... and definitely don't read my posts. Sarcasm can be lost on those not "in the know..."

Via this link.

Related:

While You Were Sleeping: Post-Sex Guilt

Married British Barrister Billed Client For Sex

Sloppy Seconds: What Do Sarah Palin And Tom Cruise Have In Common?

Live Blogging SXSWi: Ur Blog Sux and Print is Dead

Sex is the New Airborne

How bizarre is it that Fox News has become our go-to source for information on medical breakthroughs involving sex? Oddly enough, the famous conservative news source was the first outlet to tell us about a new study (ah, yes, one of those) showing all the many wonderful things sex does for the body. Some of them may actually surprise you-- and just because this is Fox we're talking about here.

Fox took their info from The Daily Mail, while we, in turn, mercifully condensed the epic story down to the most useful quotes. The article spotlights doctors at Nottingham University who want you all to have sex for the good of your health. And not the usual, "It clears the sinuses, you'll lose weight!" obviousness we've been digesting for decades. Among the benefits mentioned:

...increasing longevity to reducing the risk of erectile dysfunction and even heart attack...

Well, yes, one would think successfully completing intercourse decreases the risk of erectile dysfunction, but we see the point:

[M]en who kept up a regular sex life in their 50s were also at lower risk of developing prostate cancer

American research found that menopausal women who had sex every week
had estrogen levels twice as high as their abstaining counterparts.

'This may provide some protection against male osteoporosis.'

Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of
immunoglobulin A, or IgA, a substance found in saliva and the nasal
lining thought to help our immune systems fight colds and flu.

One of the largest studies on longevity and sex - conducted on Welsh
men - found that those who had sex less than once a month had double
the risk of dying prematurely than those who had sex twice a week.

There's bad news for us twenty- and thirtysomething sex fiends:

(Conversely, they found 'too much' sexual activity - more than 20 times a month - in the 20s and 30s could increase the risk.)

Guess we won't be getting laid tonight... not that we were planning on it anyway.

Via the Daily Mail.

Related:

Miss March Missing Something... Calvin has pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare condition which means his
blood pressure is dangerously high. This starves his lungs of oxygen-rich
blood.

The youngster struggles for breath and his heart has to work twice as hard to
force blood to his lungs. Viagra relaxes his pulmonary artery, which carries
blood to the lungs, and allows more blood and oxygen through.

Turns out that Calvin only began consuming the anti-impotence drug as a last resort-- a nurse offhandedly suggested it to the boy's mother, who realized that it might help with Calvin's blood flow issues.

Of course, it need not be mentioned that this is not a story that could ever happen in America. Most insurance companies don't cover Viagra (for anyone) and a few pills can run upwards of one hundred dollars by prescription. Universal healthcare anyone?

Via the Sun. It's just that in the past few weeks, there have been a bevy of news stories out there in this country that happened to feature wackos who happened to be religious doing things that happen to be totally bonkers nutjob crazy.

Now we hear from Strollerderby and the AP that a boy in Oregon died from a urinary tract infection (!) after his parents failed to so much as request a catheter for him. The fucked up part about all this is that they might not even be charged in his death...

Oregon state law
allows minors 14 and older to be responsible for their own medical
decisions. The family in this case is claiming the boy made the
conscious choice to eschew regular medicine and turn to prayer. The
prayer failed when the blockage caused urea to poison the organs in his
system, eventually leading to heart failure.

While we disagree with the notion that 14-year-olds can be responsible for their own wise medical decisions (we're in our late 20s and can't make any decision now, let alone a medical one), just like we don't think teenagers should spend their lives in prison for any reason, we respect this law, since it might be applied to abortions and other decisions the teenager wants to make on their own without parental interference. The problem is, in this case, if the boy changed his mind while he was bedridden and wanted to seek medical treatment for his bronchial pneumonia, his protectors wouldn't have helped him. (And the fact that when his condition got worse and worse despite their praying and they weren't willing to step back and say, "You know what? Maybe this praying thing isn't working out? We should defy God because our son is so precious to us?" Okay, wait, that sounds terrible... but you know what we mean-- this is just terrible. People can believe whatever they want, but when a child's life is at stake and you don't do anything, that's where the secular world should step in and, at the very least, make sure this family never lets a child die again.)

You can disagree, as we're sure some of you will, but this is only an opinion. Some people might say that we shouldn't tell others to compromise their beliefs for anything, not even to save a life. We respect that point of view, although respectfully disagree with it.

One more thing. Seriously, we're asking: is there a passage of the Bible that specifically mentions doctors, medical treatment, medicine and condemns every one of them? It's fine to pray, but if you break your arm, for example, don't you get a cast? Just wondering.

Via Strollerderby.

Just What The Doctor Ordered: Top 10 Health Benefits Provided By Sex

It looks like having friends with benefits brings more benefits than you think. The connection between health and sex is great news, especially for people who are "sick" of getting shot down with the "I have a headache" excuse. It's bad news for the people who use the excuse. Check out Web MD's Top 10 Reasons To Have Sex Tonight:

1. Sex Relieves Stress

A big health benefit of sex is lower blood pressure and overall
stress reduction, according to researchers from Scotland who reported
their findings in the journal Biological Psychology. They
studied 24 women and 22 men who kept records of their sexual activity.
Then the researchers subjected them to stressful situations -- such as
speaking in public and doing verbal arithmetic -- and noted their blood
pressure response to stress.

Those who had intercourse had better responses to stress than those who engaged in other sexual behaviors or abstained.

Another study published in the same journal found that frequent
intercourse was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure in
cohabiting participants. Yet other research found a link between
partner hugs and lower blood pressure in women.

2. Sex Boosts Immunity

Good sexual health may mean better physical health. Having sex once
or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody
called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting
colds and other infections. Scientists at Wilkes University in
Wilkes-Barre, Pa., took samples of saliva, which contain IgA, from 112
college students who reported the frequency of sex they had.

Those in the "frequent" group -- once or twice a week -- had higher
levels of IgA than those in the other three groups -- who reported
being abstinent, having sex less than once a week, or having it very
often, three or more times weekly.

3. Sex Burns Calories

Thirty minutes of sex burns 85 calories or more. It may not sound
like much, but it adds up: 42 half-hour sessions will burn 3,570
calories, more than enough to lose a pound. Doubling up, you could drop
that pound in 21 hour-long sessions.

"Sex is a great mode of exercise," says Patti Britton, PhD, a Los
Angeles sexologist and president of the American Association of
Sexuality Educators and Therapists. It takes work, from both a physical
and psychological perspective, to do it well, she says.

4. Sex Improves Cardiovascular Health

While some older folks may worry that the efforts expended during
sex could cause a stroke, that's not so, according to researchers from
England. In a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, scientists found frequency of sex was not associated with stroke in the 914 men they followed for 20 years.

And the heart health benefits of sex don't end there. The
researchers also found that having sex twice or more a week reduced the
risk of fatal heart attack by half for the men, compared with those who
had sex less than once a month.

5. Sex Boosts Self-Esteem

Boosting self-esteem was one of 237 reasons people have sex, collected by University of Texas researchers and published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

That finding makes sense to Gina Ogden, PhD, a sex therapist and
marriage and family therapist in Cambridge, Mass., although she finds
that those who already have self-esteem say they sometimes have sex to
feel even better. "One of the reasons people say they have sex is to
feel good about themselves," she tells WebMD. "Great sex begins with
self-esteem, and it raises it. If the sex is loving, connected, and
what you want, it raises it."

6. Sex Improves Intimacy

Having sex and orgasms increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, the
so-called love hormone, which helps us bond and build trust. Researchers from
the University of Pittsburgh and the University of North Carolina evaluated 59 premenopausal women before and after warm contact with their
husbands and partners ending with hugs. Tey found that the more
contact, the higher the oxytocin levels.

"Oxytocin allows us to feel the urge to nurture and to bond," Britton says.

Higher oxytocin has also been linked with a feeling of generosity.
So if you're feeling suddenly more generous toward your partner than
usual, credit the love hormone.

7. Sex Reduces Pain

As the hormone oxytocin surges, endorphins increase, and pain
declines. So if your headache, arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms seem
to improve after sex, you can thank those higher oxytocin levels.

In a study published in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 48 volunteers who inhaled oxytocin vapor and then had their fingers pricked lowered their pain threshold by more than half.

8. Sex Reduces Prostate Cancer Risk

Frequent ejaculations, especially in 20-something men, may reduce
the risk of prostate cancer later in life, Australian researchers
reported in the British Journal of Urology International. When
they followed men diagnosed with prostate cancer and those without,
they found no association of prostate cancer with the number of sexual
partners as the men reached their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

But they found men who had five or more ejaculations weekly while
in their 20s reduced their risk of getting prostate cancer later by a
third.

Another study, reported in the Journal of the American Medical
Association, found that frequent ejaculations, 21 or more a
month, were linked to lower prostate cancer risk in older men, as well,
compared with less frequent ejaculations of four to seven monthly.

9. Sex Strengthens Pelvic Floor Muscles

For women, doing a few pelvic floor muscle exercises known as
Kegels during sex offers a couple of benefits. You will enjoy more
pleasure, and you'll also strengthen the area and help to minimize the
risk of incontinence later in life.

To do a basic Kegel exercise, tighten the muscles of your pelvic
floor, as if you're trying to stop the flow of urine. Count to three,
then release.

10. Sex Helps You Sleep Better

The oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep, according to research.

And getting enough sleep has been linked with a host of other good
things, such as maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure.
Something to think about, especially if you've been wondering why your
guy can be active one minute and snoring the next.
