Quickie: Is Free Porn Killing Off The Industry?

Playboy is reducing it's frequency in publishing, and throwing tamer parties. Gay titles such as Mandate Playguy, Torso, Honcho, and Inches have gone off to the great porny heaven in the sky. Turns out getting naked for pay isn't as lucrative as it once was (unless you are in Bible college), and just as it goes in the rest of the media, it's because the "Democratic" web has allowed us access to too much free content that we'll no longer consider paying for it. Even celebrities can't make money off their cleavage anymore; not when any anon tipster with a camera can spread your boobs around faster than any porn producer could have on his casting couch. And that's just sad.

You knew the world was in trouble when even prostitution and pornography were suffering from the financial crisis.

Porn may have been the hardest hit-- sales and rentals are down (it's not like you can find DVDs anymore, what with all the stores being forced to close), while free porn sites have reported a jump in web traffic since the downturn began. Hell, even Naughty America, among the most popular of web porn makers, is closing offices and laying (off) employees. But instead of salvaging what remains of America's two oldest professions, Congress instead rewarded banks, institutions that already have all our savings, with all of our tax dollars, too.

Larry Flynt has a much better and far more entertaining solution to the crisis...

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Right here, thanks to the most honest and amusing, Zen-like press statement in history, is reason enough to give Larry and co. all the money Obama was going to set aside for things like Federal highways and, you know, gas for Air Force One.

"...the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

"People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

Free pornography? You don't know about this yet? We could have sworn we told you.

Is this a sign of an enlightened society or the downfall of society? The people have taken porn into their own hands and it's been killing the adult-entertainment industry along with some other things.

The story from Conde Nast Portfolio:

DVD sales are in free fall. Audiences are flocking to pornographic knockoffs of YouTube, especially a secretive site called YouPorn. And the amateurs are taking over. What’s happening to the adult-entertainment industry is exactly what’s happening to its Hollywood counterpart—only worse.

There are just too many theories to add to that comparative statement.

As its name suggests, YouPorn lets users upload and watch a virtually unlimited selection of hardcore sex videos for free. The user-generated clips on YouPorn—like those on YouTube, the site it mimics—range from the grainiest amateur footage to the slickest professional product.

Hey, anybody out there been using Zivity, a subscriber-based upscale smut site that's curently in that nebulous state known as "beta testing"? They're posing themselves as "the HBO of the Web” -- and getting a bit of investor cash in the process -- but we ain't drinking the Kool-Aid just yet, and neither is Fleshbot.

According to insidery Valley blog Techcrunch, the site will remain in "private beta" mode until at least 2009, but has already secured $8 million in private financing. When it does eventually go public, it will pay the models and photographers who generate the most interest based on user votes ... but not with that $8 mil. That money will come from user subscription fees, since you will have to pay to look at and vote on content.

... and of course, you can guess where this going: who's gonna pay for boobies when they're everywhere online for free? We'd like to put it another way: how is HBO possibly a model for a website when it's fundamentally a different business scenario? If we had to purchase access to 100 websites at a time, then yeah, we might consider a package that had high-class smut like this. But since it don't work that way (yet)... well, let's just say we're pretty skeptical too. Not that we're not open to perhaps having an open-minded look with one of those beta testing accounts... (hint hint).

Fleshbot gives us the rundown on the brand groping-and-licking-and-spanking new Porn.com, which 9 months after being acquired by a "global internet porn conglomerate" for 9 million clams (er...) has been transformed into what is claimed to be the "The World's Biggest Porn Site." Wonder if we're gonna need a bigger browser?

We just can't help thinking that a domain as special as Porn.com should be put to more loftier pursuits. The internet is porn, as we've been told so many times, and maybe the primary porn destination should offer something different (and less costly [$24.95 per month]) than generic, semi-amateur, by-the-bucket porn fare -- especially when you can already gorge yourself on that sort of thing on sites like RedTube and Megarotic for free.

Aw, too bad. For all that scratch, we were kind of hoping for a brand new orifice, at least.
