Next, a new video posted by the Iowa Senate has been burning up the Internets. It features Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal responding to Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley yesterday, the first day the Senate convened following the unanimous decision allowing gay marriage in Iowa.

The money quote in his speech, in which he refuses to join McKinley in a leadership bill to amend the Iowa Constutution and reverse the legalization of gay marriage, comes when he describes his daughter listening to old crusty conservatives discussing gay marriage. She told them, "You guys dont understand. Youve already lost. My generation doesnt care."

Students at the Academy for Arts, Science & Technology near Carolina Forest have traditionally printed their paper on their own, using funds from ad sales to cover the cost of printing the quarterly paper. But when administrators, including Principal Ronnie Burgess, saw the picture of two male students holding hands and an editorial advocating for same-sex marriage, they told the kids the paper couldn't be distributed. They offered $500 in school funds to reprint the paper - without the editorial and picture.
Burgess said he was afraid the original paper would be "disruptive."
"I had some concerns about the content of the article and how it might impact students here and what the community concerns might be when the article was distributed," he told the Myrtle Beach-based Sun News. I'm not surprised that an administrator is afraid of community backlash (even homophobic, small-minded backlash), but what floors me is the rest of Burgess' statement to the paper: "At the academy we encourage diversity, we don't look to silence student voices, we hope to facilitate their expression."

If this is a story about the very corrupt (allegedly, of course) Governor of Illinois, why are you looking at a picture of Fran Drescher?

First, the very strange breaking political story of the morning:

An official says Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (bluh-GOY'-uh-vich) has been arrested in Chicago on corruption charges stemming from the selection of the successor to President-elect Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat.
U.S. Attorney's office spokesman Randall Samborn says both Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris were arrested Tuesday. Authorities aren't yet releasing details about those charges. However, a federal law enforcement official tells The Associated Press the governor is accused of corruption charges. The official says the charges stem from the selection process of a successor to Obama.
Federal prosecutors have investigated Blagojevich's administration for at least three years. They've been looking at everything from how he hired people for state jobs to the actions of friends and contributors. [NYTimes]

(The Huffington Post adds that he was "conspiring to financially benefit" from the appointment and for threatening to illegally withhold state assistance in the matter of the sale of Wrigley Field to the Tribune Company.)

He was already under investigation for corruption in an unrelated case, so what does he do? Apparently, it's not realize that he may have a stoolie in the house or a tap on his phone and take some more bribes, this time from... wait, how is this corruption? Did Jesse Jackson, Jr. offer him a bribe? We find it hard to believe Tammy Duckworth, the Iraq War vet serving in the state of Illinois would've entered into a corrupt bargain, but maybe. And maybe it's not even involving an actual candidate-- just someone who wanted to influence the decision.

In an unrelated story, Fran Drescher has expresed interest in being appointed to Hillary Clinton's Senate seat. We're dead serious. Here's the report from CNN, which is so insane, even they can't keep a straight face:

"Fran Drescher, actress, women's health advocate and public diplomacy envoy for the U.S. State Department, announced that she is throwing her hat into the ring of contenders for the senate seat being vacated by Secretary of State-designate Hillary Rodham Clinton," Drescher spokesman Jordan Brown told CNN in a written statement late Monday.
Drescher, 51, is best known for her starring role in the 1990s television comedy "The Nanny" and an adenoidal voice that could strip the rust off an engine block — a talent that might come in handy during a Senate filibuster.

But since a bout with uterine cancer, she has become an activist for better health care for women and was named a State Department public envoy on the issue in September. Drescher recently toured Eastern European countries to raise awareness of the issue on behalf of the State Department. [CNN]

She has no chance whatsoever of being appointed by the Governor of New York, but that won't stop Chuck Schumer from breathing a sigh of relief when another person is named. After all, he's probably looking forward to having easier competition for press competition than Hillary Clinton...

Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.

Okay, cool I don't mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California.

Could this be the beginning of a new era of protest not seen since Vietnam or, better yet, pre-1776? Let's hope so-- these people need a wakeup call and if taxes is the issue that does it, so be it.

She was an advocate for gay marriage and greater civil rights for black people, but Massachusetts State Senator Dianne Wilkerson automatically sucks now for making us all look bad for even being part of the same cause.

For Wilkerson is accused of stuffing her bra-- literally-- full of thousands of dollars in cash... and that's not even counting what they found in her purse...

According to several local news outlets, Wilkerson took several grand in bribes from a shady dude looking to expedite (or least get) a liquor license. Wilkerson saw in this man a cause as noble as her own civil rights issues (okay, we're kidding here) and called in some favors... or at least put her muscle into a few key people at the state level.

When she was busted, the Democratic State Senator was found with a whopping six grand in her purse-- or, as Paris Hilton calls it, "my penny purse." Her lawyer dismissed this by saying the cash "was for expenses."

Apparently, it was for a down payment on the Sarah Palin wardrobe plan. By the way, in addition to being caught on hidden cameras stuffing a an undercover agent's bribe in her bra, Wilkerson

faces charges of attempted extortion and theft of honest services as a state senator, stemming from a money-for-legislation sting operation, officials said.

A federal criminal complaint alleges that Wilkerson was busted for accepting eight bribes, totaling $23,500, in exchange for her influence on Beacon Hill.

Wilkerson also allegedly used one $1,000 bribe to treat herself to a night of gambling and dining at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

We're tempted to make a joke about a thousand bucks not even getting you a buy-in on a game of craps at Foxwoods, but everyone will see that coming...

Every day, we read more than one hundred stories from around the globe and eventually concentrate on four or five that really stand out.

This is not only the most unusual, interesting, heartbreaking, and, ultimately, frightening tale we've come across in months, but it also may been too good for a simple blog post... but we're going to try...

Larkin Forney (his real name) was born in Virginia. When he was nine years old, he was struck by a car traveling at approximately 50 MPH. The accident put him in a coma for weeks and caused a traumatic brain injury (TBI.) He spent the next several years catching up on the previous nine, since they were all but erased from his memory. Predictably, his grades plummeted and he ended up broke, unemployed, and playing out the role everyone else cast him in.

Cut to the early 21st century (Larking was born in 1977) and Larkin is arrested for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Larkin claimed in court that he was guilty but that he was ignorant of the girl's real age, since he simply took her word for it. Soon after, despondent and confused, he set fire to himself and, ultimately, a room in his parents' home; badly disfigured, he survived, only to wind up charged with arson and reckless endangerment-- talk about adding insult to injury. (We don't dispute the state's right to prosecute him on this one, just the necessity of doing so.)

Normally, a story like this would jump to today's news, about Forney's run for the State Senate on his own party's ticket, Justice For Vermonters. However, in the course of our research into Forney's background, we dug up a little more dirt (from October 2004) that shows, regardless of Forney's injuries, the fact of the matter is he may be more dangerous man than sympathetic sinner:

Defendant has been incarcerated since July 2003 when he failed to post $50,000 bail after being charged with arson and misdemeanor reckless endangerment... Defendant has other charges pending against him because of acts he allegedly committed while he was released on bail prior to his trial on felony counts for a third DWI, and a refusal to take an evidentiary breath test for a third DWI. While on release from the DWI charges, defendant initiated a consensual sexual relationship with a girl whom he met on the internet and whom he allegedly believed was of age. A police investigation conducted after defendant and the girl had been hospitalized for drug and alcohol overdoses revealed that the girl was under the age of sixteen, and that the two allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse on two occasions. These revelations led to two charges of sexual assault on a minor... Defendant could not post bail and as a result was briefly incarcerated until bail was raised. While out on release, defendant was charged with violating the condition that he not use the internet. Finally, out of frustration with his predicament, defendant apparently attempted to commit suicide by dousing himself in gasoline and setting a fire in his room at his parent' s house. The ensuing fire badly burned defendant and left his face and arms visibly disfigured. The fire also seriously damaged his parent's house. As a result, defendant was charged with arson and misdemeanor reckless endangerment of his mother, and the high bail was set.

When we first sat down to write about this guy, the post we had in mind was more along the lines of "this piece of trash thinks he can run for public office? Anybody can run for public office, but not a sick perverted idiot sex offender." Now, we're not so sure that's how we feel. Is the fact that he's obviously brain damaged, possibly mentally incompetent, and a prime candidate for psychiatric treatment enough to overshadow the fact that he's clearly-- pardon the term-- a "menace to society?" Moreover, does he have any business running for elected office either way?

"I want to be a senator because I think I could bring integrity and honesty back to the justice system which I believe is failing us because I have been a victim of false reports and false accusations," Forney said.

He spent 21 months behind bars for his sex crime conviction... And he says he will address the hot topic of the day-- dealing with sex offenders.

"I agree that there should be tighter restrictions for sex offenders who are real predators... a danger to society. I had testimony from professionals that I am no predator or a pedophile," Forney said.

That's something you don't see every century: a convicted sex offender running for office on a tough-on-sex-offenders platform. What do you think? Is this guy too scary to be on the streets or should we just incarcerate where he'd never be heard from again... such as the Vermont state government?

Long since abandoned by the military, “Section 8” was the military designation for a soldier who’d gone a little further off the deep end than allowed. (See also: bat-shit crazy.)

Now, I’m not suggesting that John McCain is crazy, but he has been through some harrowing experiences while rightfully sympathizing with, may have just as rightfully caused him to suffer from PTSD or worse, a complete mental breakdown.

Before I go any further I want to make clear that this is not a hack job. In 2000 I supported John McCain’s bid for the White House and felt then (and every harrowing day since) that the wrong man won the nomination due to Rovian dirty tricks in South Carolina. Though I didn’t know a lot of about him then, it was especially important to me that McCain bucked the party line when logic and reason called for it. Since then he seems to have made a strategic pact with the devil in exchange for his “rightful slot” at the Oval Office. He has lurched so far to the right that he’s even disavowed his own bills.

But this isn’t a question about yet another career politician’s flip flops and moral compromises in order to achieve greater power – that’s to be expected. What no one seems to be asking is far more important: Is John McCain mentally fit to serve as Commander in Chief?

Let’s look at the facts:

1. Captain Jack. Both his grandfather and his father were career Admirals in the Navy. Despite the fact that McCain was a hotshot playboy in the academy who graduated near the bottom of his class, family lineage among naval officers is as common as gunmetal grey on a battle ship. McCain was still on track to follow in the patent leather footsteps of his fathers. Instead he only made the relatively humble rank of Captain before quietly retiring in the early 1980’s.

Long before then, as we all know, McCain was shot down in Vietnam and spent the next five years “tied up,” as he likes to remind us, in a Vietnamese prison camp. He even heroically denied early release, as it would be “out of turn” and ahead of his fellow prisoners.

This courageous decision did not come without cost, however. He was tortured, beaten and literally broken. To this day he suffers from his horrifying physical wounds.

To what extent has he suffered psychological wounds? Close your eyes and try to imagine five long, hard years of torture and isolation. Isn’t it more fantastical to suggest that he didn't suffer psychological scars? The question should be: how deep do these scars run?

2. “Fightin’ John McCain. Second only to his POW experience, John McCain is also famous for his temper. In fact, an Arizona colleague who has worked with him for decades recalls the common joke that McCain has “signed more letters of apology than bills.” The frightening part is that he flips out over and over again. Could this be evidence of a mind that has simply (and perhaps rightfully under the circumstances) short-circuited under so much duress as a prisoner of war?

A Senator’s power is hemmed in by the nature of the office. What will happen when McCain is Commander in Chief and another Georgia unfolds? Will we get the “let’s work together to resolve this” rhetorical McCain or the “let’s kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out” losing-his-shit McCain?

3. Medical History. Past reports on McCain’s mental health have been given a cursory look. In 1999 McCain “released” his medical and psychological records but as ‘read only’ a select group of reporters who could not take pictures of the documents. These are not national security letters but the medical evaluations of a man asking to lead a nation. What is there to hide?

His doctors have repeatedly given him a clean bill of health. This is not to be dismissed lightly, but these doctors are also lifelong personal and professional friends. It is too much to ask to request an objective evaluation?

Again – I’m not trying to pull a shafty move on John McCain or question the value of his service to our country. I’m not talking about his patriotism or his age. Both of which should be commended, for it is that patriotism and obvious dedication to America which have led to both his trauma and his triumphant lifetime of public service.

I’m asking only a single, legitimate question: is John McCain of sound mind and body to lead our country?

GOP Senate Candidate's Son In Hot Water For Racist Facebook Profile

Bob Schaffer is a Republican in the Senate seat fight for his life in Colorado, in one of the hottest races in the country. Unfortunately for him, his son has a Facebook page that is only going to help his opponent raise insane amounts of money.

Among its many highlights, Justin's page features:

1) a gun-toting Jesus in front of the Confederate flag asking WWRJD? (What Would Republican Jesus Do? The answer, this year, would be to vote Bob Barr, probably.)

2) Obama admitting he's gay.

3) And by far the most offensive one of all, the image that could incite a huge backlash... and no, not the one you're seeing at right, in which Obama is depicted as Count Chocula...

"I do not agree with the sentiment or content of the offensive material, especially the 'bumper sticker' that references slave labor. It is clear that my actions were juvenile, disrespectful, and a mistake on my part.

"The offensive materials directly contradict the values that my parents taught me and are forbidden in my parents' home. My Facebook page is solely my responsibility, and I am saddened that my actions have reflected poorly on my sisters and parents."
His father spoke to 9NEWS on the phone after an event in Glenwood Springs Monday evening and said, "My wife and I have initiated a process of firm and severe discipline with our son."

Where do we start? Okay, first of all... how do you not agree with the sentiment on your Facebook page? Why would it be there at all? For example, Annie Hall is listed under our favorite movies on Facebook, so you'd automatically and correctly assume we agree with its sentiment.

Notice too that Shaffer the Candidate does not say, "What my son said was wrong. If we can't beat Obama on real issues or real truths about who he is, then we should just all vote Nader and admit defeat." (Don't worry, we're just dreaming aloud.) Did we mention that the kid has a pic of Obama dressed as a Muslim at the White House... and no, this ain't the cover of the New Yorker we're talking about?

The John Edwards Affair And Love Child Scandal: The Sequel

John Edwards, two-time Presidential candidate and John Kerry's Vice-Presidential pick in 2004, has been dogging a sex scandal for months, since December 2007, in fact. Now, as polls continue to show the former Senator as the most effective running mate for Obama (in terms of which states he helps pick up), his chances at a second nomination for VP is in serious jeopardy following these latest allegations...

According to the National Enquirer-- wait, stop. This is a serious story, being picked up by mainstream media, that comes from the National Enquirer? Well, it's not exactly trustworthy until you find out they're claiming they did their own reporting on this, following Edwards around and even attempting to corner him in a bathroom for a photo.

A team of ENQUIRER reporters caught the married ex-senator visiting his mistress and secret love child late Monday night at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles hotel.

...Edwards got out of the passenger side, walked around the front of the car and went in a side entrance near the swimming pool. [A friend of both Edwards and his alleged mistress rented two rooms and, the Enquirer claims, stayed in one of the rooms alone so the couple could spend time alone.]
Edwards' advisers are "spitting mad and furious" that his late-night escapades have made international headlines because it could derail his chances of becoming Barack Obama's running mate. Edwards has not explained his whereabouts to any members of other news media outlets who have been trying to follow up on the story.

His mistress, blonde divorcee Rielle, meanwhile... is "in despair" that Edwards might cut off contact with her because their latest rendezvous has been exposed in the media.

You may recall that this story came and went during the run-up to the Iowa caucuses. First, the love child allegations surfaced; soon after, they were "buried" when a close (married) friend of Edwards' came forward to say, "Hey, wait a minute. It was actually me." The story quickly vanished from even the conservative blogosphere, although no one seemed to believe it. We all acted like the detective does when a death row inmate takes a rap for somebody else-- he may have his suspicions but he's happy just to close the case and move on.

If you had money in IndyMac, a Pasadena, CA-based bank that collapsed over the weekend, there's good news and bad news. Bad news is: it's gone, baby, gone. Good news: Your tax dollars, in the form of $4 to $8 billion, will take care of that little problem.

IndyMac's doom had been long in coming: the stock price was tanking, lately seen below the $1 mark, and investors were yanking more than a hundred million a day from the company, which had gotten carried away with the handing out of mortgages during the housing boom. But it was the work of one man, with one stroke of his pen, that ended up finishing the company off... and costing all some pretty pennies...

IndyMac, which once employed 10,000, fell prey to a classic run on the bank, and regulators singled out Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) as having helped to fuel massive withdrawals. On June 26, Schumer said in letters to the FDIC, the OTS and two other federal agencies that IndyMac might have "serious problems" with its loan holdings.

"I am concerned that IndyMac's financial deterioration poses significant risks to both taxpayers and borrowers," he wrote. The bank "could face a failure if prescriptive measures are not taken quickly."

That public warning prompted depositors to pull $1.3 billion out of accounts between June 27 and Thursday.

"This institution failed today due to a liquidity crisis," John M. Reich, director of the OTS, said at a news conference Friday afternoon. "Although this institution was already in distress, the deposit run pushed IndyMac over the edge."

Schumer said in a statement that the cause of IndyMac's failure was "poor and loose lending practices" that should have been prevented by more active regulation. Later, a Schumer spokesman said: "Mr. Reich, a political appointee, should be spending less time playing politics and more time doing his job."

Later in the statement, Schumer said: "I have no problem playing poltiics with enough money to feed every starving child in this country, or maybe about half of the fat people in Tennessee. Now just try and defeat me in an electoral contest!"

But he may have been misquoted. IndyMac's failure is the largest since 1984. You can read more about this sotry at the LA Times website.
