We Repeat: Smart Women Have Better Sex

We seem to recall a study like this popping up about a year ago, but we're happy to repeat it: intelligent women have better sex.

Apparently, women who have high levels of "emotional intelligence," or the ability to express their own feelings and read others', have more fulfilling sex lives.

[Researcher Tim Spector, of King's College London] quizzed more than 2,000 female twins, aged between 18 and 83, about their sex lives.

The women were asked to rate their ability to reach orgasm on a seven-point scale, ranging from 'never' to always'.

They also filled in a questionnaire designed to gauge their emotional intelligence and covering traits like self-expression, empathy and contentment.

Those most in touch with their feelings also had the most orgasms, the Journal of Sexual Medicine reports.

Lead author, psychologist Andrea Burri, also of King's College, said: 'Emotional intelligence seems to have a direct impact on women's sexual functioning by influencing her ability to communicate her sexual expectations and desires to her partner.'

Perhaps this is also because we know that it is not hellfire that makes us burn in between our legs?

Go ahead, pretend you didn't spend the better part of the nineties singing Sarah McLachlan songs in the shower, but we know better. And if you were as young and poor and uncool as we were, you may have spent the last ten years of your life regretting the fact that you never made it to the Lilith Fair to catch McLachlan, Missy Eliot, Bonnie Rait, Erykah "On and On" Badu, Lisa "You Say I Only Hear What I Want To" Loeb, Paula "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" Cole, Meredith "Bitch" Brooks*, Meshell Ndegeocello, The Cowboy Junkies, and so many, many more amazing female performers. But, after a ten-year hiatus, the Lilith Fair is back. Well, it will be back. In 2010. Terry McBride, chief executive of Nettwerk Music Group made the announcement via Twitter over the weekend. And that's the good news.

The bad news?

So far, Billboard reports, Nettwerk has only planned a two-week tour in the U.K./Europe. (Scanner Colleen, I see an across-the-pond girl date/camping trip in our future.)

Lilithfair.com (which we assume is official) confirms the festival's return, but a basic splash page links only to its Wikipedia entry.

*Speaking of Meredith "Bitch Brooks, we recently heard that song on the radio and couldn't believe how fucking good and ::sigh:: relevant it is, still.

Drunkenness No Longer an Excuse for Being a Creepy Old Man

According to a new study, alcohol does not impair a man's ability to tell whether a girl is legal or not. The study, published by the University of Leicester in the British Journal of Psychology, found that alcohol had very little impact on men's perception of the ages of women in pictures.

A total of 240 members of the public in bars and cafés were asked to look at composite photographs of ten young women aged 17 and asked to rate their attractiveness.

Some of the photos were digitally altered to give the faces a younger or older appearance and make-up was applied in some cases. Half of the participants questioned had consumed at least some alcohol before the task and their blood-alcohol level was measured by a breathalyser test.

The study found that participants consistently overestimated the age of the girls in the images by an average of 3.5 years. But although men and women rated younger-looking faces as more attractive on average, “contrary to expectations, alcohol and make-up did not inflate attractiveness ratings”, the researchers write.

The lead researcher, Vincent Egan, said: “This study suggests that alcohol consumption and make-up use do not interfere with how old we perceive someone to be.

“Another interesting finding was that, overall, participants who drank alcohol actually rated all the women in the photos as less attractive, compared with the participants who had not drunk alcohol.

“This seemingly flies in the face of the commonly held notion of ‘beer goggles’.”

So stop blaming your perverted (or preverted, as Scanner Colleen would say) ways on the beer, old men, and just admit you like little girls, okay?

Since her departure from The O.C. Mischa Barton has become infamous for one thing: taking her top off. Sure, we recall a little something about drinking and driving, and there was that whole crotch shot business, but those incidents have been overshadowed by the fact that the girl just likes to show us her boobs. So she does it. Over and over and over again. This is probably due, in part, to the fact that she has been consistently chided by the media about her body after some unflattering swimsuit pictures appeared in tabloids last year. And in the May issue of UK Cosmopolitan, the actress strikes back at body bullies by taking her top off, yet again.

“It’s human nature to be self-critical, but it’s possible to like the way you look,” she says. “I’m happy now – I wouldn’t change my body, and I couldn’t anyway. The only way to be happy and be a more enjoyable person to be around is to embrace what you’ve got. Everyone has issues about their body, but I feel confident now. I’m healthy and happy. Surely there are more important issues than if someone has cellulite?”

Doctors in the UK would like you to know that gardening as little as 30 minutes a week can dramatically improve a man's performance in bed—but not because it teaches you to use your hands or cultivate your materials.

It's exercise. Of course, you could also get off your ass and take a hike or ride a bike or any other moderate activity, but gardening is the activity du jour.

As little as 30 minutes a week tending the garden or allotment can dramatically improve men's performance in bed, according to the experts in the field.

Digging, weeding or mowing the lawn for half an hour reduced men's risk of failing to live up to expectations in bed by more than a third, the survey found.

The same study showed other forms of moderate exercise, such as dancing and cycling, could have similar benefits.

Men who spend even more time in the vegetable patch can more than halve their risk of impotence, researchers at the Medical University of Vienna found in their study.

"Erectile function can be maintained even by low, regular physical activity," concludes the report. "Energy expenditure of as little as 1,000 calories a week reduces the risk. Doctors should use these findings to encourage their patients to do more physical training and adopt a healthier lifestyle."

Are you certain that your dream of having your picture taken with America's first black president on such a historical day is crushed forever?

Well, it's time to turn that "no we can't" into a "yes we can." Because thanks to some clever Brits, yes we can.

The London branch of Madame Tussauds wax museum will waive its $38 entry fee on January 20 for anyone who can prove s/he is a U.S. Citizen. This means you can still totally have your picture taken with Barack Obama on Inauguration Day. That is, if they finish him in time.

Sculptors are apparently still adding the finishing touches, but a museum spokesperson said that "Obama would be shown in an informal and relaxed pose, smiling with arms casually folded amid a reproduction of the White House Oval Office."

We advise against booking those plane tickets just yet. If those "finishing touches" don't happen, you might be lining up to pose with yet another rich, white man.

What Do Women Fear Most?

I joke a lot about the things I don't want to become when I get old: fat, boring, Republican, wrinkled, and so on. There's one thing as a woman that I don't regularly throw into that litany (often reserving it for men), but it doesn't mean I don't, or shouldn't, worry about it.

According to a new study out of the UK, women 18 to 70 are more concerned with alopecia, or losing their hair, than with any other body issue.

While it should be noted that the study was conducted by the Alopecia Clinic, I won't lie. I've had more than a few of those those moments on the subway, standing near a woman whose scalp is clearly showing through a few strands of greasy hair (probably because she's afraid to wash it often, lest more fall out), thinking to myself that I'd take a muffin top and bad skin over a balding head any day.

At those times, I'm reminded how much my hair is tied to my own idea of beauty. I get more male attention when I grow it out though I'll be the first to admit I think a short bob is much more manageable (and I think I look cuter with a short hair style).

But recently, my hair started coming out like crazy; not in patches, but more than usual. My sister, who is a cosmetologist, figured it was postpartum alopecia. Women tend to shed hair after giving birth, or having an abortion or sometimes even going off of the pill (as I had just done).

Not everyone is so lucky.

57-year-old Jenny Austin started losing her hair in 1982. She didn't have the Internet for information or support groups, so she started her own local group in Birmingham (in the UK, not AL) after taking an ad out in the local paper. It's been great for moral support, says Jenny. But even with the Internet and support groups and wigs and treatments and all the self-confidence in the world, dating as a bald woman has proven to be difficult for alopecia sufferers.

Claire Boylan, a 31-year-old in Birmingham who has been dealing with alopecia for ten years had one guy call her a freak and met another who wanted to "show me to his family."

Unfortunately, alopecia—which is thought to be an autoimmune disorder—is hard to treat. While there are certain medications that can ward off symptoms, they cause other health problems, like deep vein thrombosis.

"I have always had good family and friends who really help me but you do have to be quite a strong person to cope with it," Claire told the Birmingham Mail. "But at the end of the day beauty is only skin deep and if people judge you for having no hair what does that say about them?"

That they think everyone should be skinny with long, luscious hair. And that they're probably shallow assholes.

Give the gift of condoms this holiday season—to your mom. Okay, maybe not to your mom, unless you're a teenager (in which case, turn off your computer and go watch "Saved by the Bell" right now!), but maybe you should give your older, divorced sister some condoms. Because according to a new study out of the UK, people in their 30's and 40's are much less likely than teenagers to use condoms when having sex with someone new.

While 68 percent of 16- to 19-year-olds said they used protection for the first sexual encounter with a new partner, just 38 percent of men and 29 percent of women aged 35 to 44 reported doing so, Dr. Catherine H. Mercer of University College London and her colleagues found.

"Increasing rates of STIs diagnosed among those in their 30s and 40s suggest that interventions that promote consistent condom use with new partners are urgently required, not just for young people as has been the focus recently, but for people in their 30s and 40s and older who are increasingly forming new partnerships," Mercer and her team write in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

The researchers surveyed 11,161 men and women 16 to 44 years old. Each person was interviewed face-to-face, and then answered more sensitive questions about sexual issues using a computer-assisted self-interview. Study participants reported the number of sexual partners they'd had, and also gave detailed information on the nature of their last three relationships.

The survey turned up 15,488 heterosexual partnerships reported by 9,598 people. For men, 39 percent of these partnerships were casual (defined as "not (yet) regular"), while 20 percent of women's were. Overall, 37 percent of men and 29 percent of women said they used a condom the last time they had sex.

When having sex for the first time with a partner, 55 percent of participants used a condom. Couples with an age difference of five years or greater were less likely to use condoms when they had sex the first time. And 23 percent of men said that they'd had sex within 24 hours of meeting their current partner, compared to about 11 percent of women.

The high rate of unprotected sex they identified, especially in casual partnerships is "worrisome," the researchers say. They conclude: "Condom use with new partners needs to be promoted among all age groups."

We'll be damned if today isn't sexual function day or something.

According to FOXNews, the Daily Mail is reporting (though we can't find the original article) that a new aerosol spray could be the answer to all of your premature ejaculation problems.

The spray, PSD502 (sexy!) is basically an anesthetic that reduces the sensitivity of the penis. Which doesn't sound like fun to us, but we don't have a penis and can't really say.

Apparently it works, though:

In a European study, 300 men used the spray over the course of 12 weeks. The results indicated that the drug became effective within five minutes, compared to the placebo’s result of one minute. The men who used it did not report any harmful side effects.

Apparently, being a self-made chef does not make one immune to hot peppers.

A chef in the UK suffered heart failure and died after eating a spciy chili on a dare.

Mr Lee, of Edlington, Doncaster was apparently in perfect health and had just passed a medical at work, the opening of the Doncaster hearing was told.

Cooking was one of his main interests and he went to his girlfriend Samantha Bailey's house to make a chilli.

His father John Lee told the inquest: "He had a bet with Samantha's brother who could make the hottest chilli then went back to her house to stay."

Mother-of-four Miss Bailey called the emergency services to her home nine days ago.

Police officers were called to the house after receiving reports of a man suffering a cardiac arrest and Mr Lee was found lying on the floor.

Paramedics failed to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Our little sister's boyfriend did this once, but only ended up with a severe case of the runs.

The Guiness Book of World Records brought London to a standstill today when the world's smallest man, He Pingping, came face-to-err-CROTCH with Svetlana Pankratova, the woman with the longest legs. Cheeky little fella He had the photographers laughing when he took a quick peek up Svetlana's skirt as they posed in Trafalgar Square. But Svetlana got her own back. She sat on He and he ain't been seen since.

If we were going to drop $200 on a hamburger — which, let's be honest, we totally would if we could — it sure as hell wouldn't be from Burger King. Even if it was a Burger King in the UK. Even though Big Macs are better in the UK so who's to say that Burger King wouldn't be better in the UK? But still... let's talk about why it's expensive.

Because Burger King says so to break some silly record:

Burger King's £95 sandwich, named simply The Burger, will make Guinness World Record history beating a similarly extravagant American Double Truffle Burger which cost just £65 in 1994.
The world's most succulent Japanese beef is complemented with white truffles, onion tempura prepared in Cristal champagne and Italy's finest Pata Negra prosciutto.

Really? You're gonna be like that, Burger King?

We think we can do better, especially with the help of our friend the Shameless Carnivore. Because we can make a burger that will not only cost 95 pounds, it will make you gain 95 pounds.

Or, uh, we could just make a regular burger and get someone to give us $250 for it and then we'd have the most expensive burger in the world, now wouldn't we?

A new study from the UK claims that intelligent people are less likely to believe in God.

Professor Richard Lynn, emeritus professor of psychology at Ulster University, who conducted the research, claims that religious belief declined across 137 developed nations in the 20th century — a time when humans were becoming more intelligent.

Lynn's ideas are, of course, being challenged, and referred to as "simplistic." While we have to agree that they're a little simplistic (at least as far as they're set forth in the news article, we've known plenty — okay a handful — of intelligent people who believed in God. But we have to admit that even those people challenged the very ideas of the God that were set before them, in say, The Bible.

Scanner Emily's conclusion: following anything blindly — especially The Bible — is not so intelligent. But let's give the folks that believe in something a little wiggle room, eh?

(Forgive us if you've seen this before, it's rather old. But it's too good — or maybe just too creepy — not to share)

When we first started watching this commercial, we thought it was like all the doll ads we saw as kids. We had the dolls that would "pee" the water that you "fed" them if you squeezed them hard enough. We did not, however, have a baby doll with a little baby ween that moved up and down and squirted pee high up into the air, or into this poor father's face, as it were.
