Fox News Wants You To Have Sex... Greener Sex

We're often discussing ways to reconcile our need for unrestrained, raunchy sex with our boring ol' environmentalism. Sometimes we've even gotten specific about ways our love lives have evolved in a more socially-conscious era. But we not as specific as the recent Fox News piece "11 Ways to Make Your Sex Life 'Greener.'"

Wait, Fox News is leading the eco-friendly sexual revolution? Now, this we gotta see...

Here are the 11 Ways, according to FNC Sexpert Yvonne K. Fulbright, a smarty-pants name if we've ever heard it (just kidding-- it's impossible to successfully mock a pompous byline when your own last name is Fairbanks.)

1. Organic Lubricants 2. Bamboo Sheets 3. Eco-Lingerie 4. Environmentally Friendly Condoms 5. Sustainable Wooden Paddles 6. Phthalate-Free Vibrators 7. Certified Fair Trade Chocolate 8. Local Flowers 9. Sex Kits 10. Organic Wine 11. DivaCup

Nothing extraordinary, but perhaps more comprehensive than many similar lists we've personally created on Scanner. But one thing stuck with us-- this seemed all too familiar. Look at a post on the TakePart blog:

1) Sustainably Sexy Lingerie 2) Vegan Condoms 3) Natural Lubricants 4) Spank Me! 5) Organic Massage Oils 6) Solar Vibrator 7) Twisted Monk Bondage Starter Kit 8) Smart Balls 9) Fun in the Tub 10) Fair Trade Aphrodisiacs

No one's accusing Fox of plagairzing our friends at the socially-conscious TakePart, but why would we listen to Fox News, a network that tells us sex is a shameful practice yet has no problem milking stories about it for monetary gain? Why would we listen to a conservative "news" source, a proudly "red state" institution after it was revealed that people in states that heavily regulate sexual activity spend more money on porn than those in more liberal areas?

Perhaps we're getting ahead of ourselves. But the point is-- why would anyone care what Fox News thinks is greener sex when we have a liberal list that includes gems like this:

Have you been a baaaad environmentalist? Forget to recycle that take-out container last night? Bend over and take your punishment like a good little greenie with this classic wooden paddle made with materials from a sustainable source by a fair trade project in India.

Suck my Smart Balls, Murdoch.

We should know better, considering Kyp Malone of TVOTR used to be our upstairs neighbor. But, apparently living close to coolness does not make one cool.

We ran this almost a year ago, but we're reposting it because this shit is getting depressing. We need some kind of silver lining.

Do recession woes have you down? Are you worried about losing your job and/or your yipster lifestyle? As terrifying as doing your own laundry and switching from Americanos to drip coffee may seem, the recession could do wonders for your love life. And as we learn from Caitlin MacRae, economist, sexologist and Nerve intern, life as a normal person affected by the recession is a lot like life as a blogger.

10. Fine wine will once again be for stuffy rich people.

These days, everyone’s expected to be able to select the correct boujolais from a leather-bound list of hundreds, adding anxiety to an otherwise pleasant date. When the economy tanks and you’re forced to go back to meeting up at the kinds of bars you don’t find in Zagats, the two of you can relax and do shots of Jim Beam while wistfully reminiscing about your vintage merlots – and your vintage careers.

9. Lack of disposable income will force you and your date to engage in exhilarating illegal activities.

Before you had a job, before you were old enough to get into bars, you lived a romantic existence free of any sense of social propriety or personal accountability. Instead of planning extravagant outings, you figured out how to skulk around verboten locales, pool-hopping late into the night and making out in the backseats of unlocked cars. Just because you’re all grown up doesn’t mean you can’t still indulge in such shenanigans, and shimmying up to top of that water tower together is free, unless you need to post bail.

8. Bars are filled with the unemployed by three p.m., drunken hookups will be in progress by five.

When everyone works till seven, happy hour doesn’t really get going until eight, which doesn’t leave much time to get tanked and slur pickup lines at strangers before a responsible working-person’s bedtime. With more free time, you can look forward to those midday drink specials and the afternoon bouts of poor judgment they produce.

7. You’ll find out if those coffee shops really are hotbeds of early-afternoon sexual tension.

Your freelancer friends have long regaled you with stories of giddy midday coffee-shop flirtations, making their wayward life sound like Prince’s Black Album incarnate. You’ll soon find out if this secret holy land of semi-employed sexual tension actually exists, since you’ll be parked in this alleged paradise of furtive glances all day while Craigslisting for gigs.

6. Breakfast will replace brunch.

Somewhere between the lemon-pepper-vodka Bloody Marys and the sea-salt-and-pesto poached eggs, we lost sight of the real magic of weekend mornings: sloth-like apartment lingering. Instead of showering, throwing on a jaunty scarf and skipping down to the chirpy, overpriced brunch nook, you and your significant other – or last night’s trick -- can shuffle around in ancient pajama pants, fry up half a pound of bacon, and have morning sex without waiting for an overworked server to bring you the check.

5. Museum dates will be unaffordable.

Like an Alzheimer’s patient, we return to the $20-per-ticket Museum of Modern Art again and again for an ill-conceived date with someone we don’t know very well and already feel awkward around. The museum date is a clumsy murder-suicide: the two of you shuffle from sculpture to painting while acting like pretentious eggheads as you try to discuss art that you don’t understand. Catch a discount matinee instead, and grope in the dark.

4. Library-sex will make a comeback.

Combine America’s declining interest in knowledge, free admission, and sultry, stuffy sex-maniac librarians, and suddenly you have an accessible, sparsely populated impromptu orgy club. The public library, with its many dim corners and unlocked “reading rooms,” is a recession-era Plato’s Retreat. Take it from a former librarian: the microfiche room is far from obsolete when reappropriated in the right fashion.

3. That romantic getaway to a Costa Rican eco-lodge will become a sordid roadtrip to a dingy Niagara Falls motel.

Never underestimate the beautiful sleaziness of vacationing on the cheap. After spending several hours in traffic, then bundling up in twelve layers to go stare at a plummeting body of water, you’ll be eager to trundle back to the seedy Fairway Motor Inn for an evening of basic cable, vending-machine dinner and the sickest, hottest sex you’ve had since your first three months of dating. Splurge for the room with the mirror on the ceiling – we can’t even begin to explain how worth the money this is.

2. Tinier apartments lead to accidental sex.

Since rents never seem to drop with the rest of the market, you’ll need to downgrade from that sturdy loft to a tiny railroad apartment whose walls seem to actually amplify your neighbors’ late-night viewing choices. Might as well seize the opportunity to accidentally on purpose touch one of your five roommates’ breasts while reaching around her to grab your coffee mug in the morning. With everyone unemployed and starved for a little human contact – and the unpaid electric bill shrouding you in darkness -- you can get away with more than usual.

1. More dates take place in the cheapest available venue: the bedroom.

Pirated movies on your laptop, cheap take-out and some PBR serve the exact same function as the overpriced museum, the brunch spot, and the wine bar - and none of those places have the advantage of being right where you want to be in the first place. Happy poverty!

So we're not surprised that two of the producers last night called Dr. Jack Shephard's beard "gross." While we saw the beard in Season 4, it made a re-appearance in Season 5. And since stupid Ben Linus made Jack shave it off last night, we will honor the great beard that was, after the jump.

Back to the Future (or Today in the Apocalypse?): First Documented Case of 'Zzz-mailing'

We've heard of sleep walking, sleep talking and even sleep fucking, but emailing while asleep? Oh yes.

Is it a fluke or a sign of the imminent technology/drug-induced apocalypse?

A study published in the journal Sleep Medicine reports that a 44-year-old woman turned on her computer and sent emails to her friends asking them to come over with wine and caviar... all while she was asleep.

The woman was taking Zolpidem, which is sold in the U.S. as Ambien. Which studies have found can cause people to eat, walk and have sex while sleeping.

Among the woman's emails:

One read: "Come tomorrow and sort this hell hole out. Dinner and drinks, 4 p.m., Bring wine and caviar only."

Another said simply, "What the ..."

The new variation of sleepwalking has been described as "zzz-mailing."

"We believe writing an e-mail after turning the computer on, connecting to the Internet and remembering the password displayed by our patient is novel," the researchers said. "To our knowledge, this type of complex behavior requiring coordinated movements has not been reported before in sleepwalking," they wrote.

Novel, a sign of the apocalypse. Call it what you will, but imagine if we got on Facebook while asleep and started updating out status with our dreams: "Emily is currently having sex with [redacted]" or "Emily is currently having sex with [redacted] and [redacted]" or "Emily is floating on a chocolate cloud while tiny green men dance circles around my areolas.

No, we have not run out of bearded men to feature here on Scanner after just three short weeks (even though we seem to have no access to them, the world is full of beautiful bearded men), but we did come across a bearded woman who is a little bit our soul mate and a lot our hero. Oh, also she's absolutely adorable, if you can believe it.

Okay, so she doesn't grow her own beard, but she puts more care into it than most men put into the scraggly mops on their faces (we love those, too). Plus we're all for putting more beards in the world, real or fake. And we're so adding one of Erin's beards to our Christmas list.

If there's one thing we love more than bearded men here at Scanner, it's funny bearded men. If there is more than one thing we love more than bearded men, the other is bearded men who are funny and also have bellies. What can we say? We like big, warm, cuddly, funny hairy dudes. Especially when it's "dangerously cold" outside.

That is why our Bearded Man of the Week is comedian Zach Galifianakis.

We're really sad the video cut out before the effeminate gay basher. Perhaps we could get him to do it for us in person before we go. We've seen Zach hanging out at the bar four doors down from our apartment, on multiple occasions, but have yet to stop in and say "hi." He's also friends with our old friend Bobby.

Anyway, Zach, keep the beard and the funny coming and we'll love you forever. Hell, even if you lose the funny, keep the beard (and the belly).

Now that it's getting miserably cold outside—at least in Brooklyn—we're staring a new feature to keep us nice and warm here at Scanner (okay, really it's to keep me, Scanner Emily, from drying up...I like to objectify and fetishize men sometimes, you know?).

Each week, at least until we start showing some skin again, we're going to bring you a beautiful bearded man.

This week's bearded man is Sam Beam, the musical genius behind Iron & Wine...what we happen to listen to every day in the shower, er, every day that we shower (which is most days).

While he performs live with a band, Beam is pretty much a one-man act, at least when it comes to recording.

We just love holiday press releases here at Scanner. We're actually starting to believe they're funded by liquor companies. They're either so full of warm and fuzzy bullshit you want to laugh about it over a bottle of wine or they contain some information that will likely scare you so much you spend the entire holiday throwing back Bailey's on the rocks to forget that your life, as you know it, may crumble in front of you (and your entire family) at any given moment.

Our holiday press release du jour comes from Ruth Houston an, "infidelity expert and author" who thinks you should spend Thanksgiving giving thanks for your monogamous mate. But, she adds, even though you think you have a faithful partner, you probably don't, mmmkay?

It is of the utmost importance to be reminded on Turkey Day, that:

• 50% to 70% of men cheat on their mates
• female infidelity has increased 50% in the past 10 years
• In one study, 70% of married women and 54% of married men whose spouses were cheating had no idea their partner was having an affair.
• In another study, 60% of those who admitted to cheating, said their partner did not know about their affair.

But she's quick to remind us that even if you think your mate falls into the faithful category, think again:

"Most people who are married or in a committed relationship automatically assume their partner is faithful. But as the statistics above indicate, only a small percentage of those in relationships can truthfully make that claim."

Yeah, so instead of spending so much on a free-range, organic turkey this year, you should be saving your money for a private investigator. And booze. Lots of booze.

Also, a good way to tell if a celebrity might be an all right person in real life is to scan through this page of stories from waiters all over the country. They weight on whether a celebrity was a great tipper (Bill Murray, Joe Pesci, Stevie Nicks) or one who ordered "many bottles of wine" and still stiffed the help (Don Henley, big surprise.)

If you're not a blogger, you probably got (or are getting) an economic stimulus check from the government. Must be nice.

Melba, here, is putting hers into the bank, she believes no good can come from spending it. She's probably right.

This family took a road trip, got a new garbage disposal and paid off some credit card bills. Is this what life becomes when you get married and have kids? Yikes.

If we had an economic stimulus check, which we don't (and won't, because we're bloggers, remember), we'd have a really expensive, really big grass-fed steak washed down by an entire bottle of dry red wine, then we'd buy a plane ticket to somewhere while drunk off of that red wine.

Heath Ledger's official cause of death was ruled "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine." In other words, he died of an "accidental overdose."

Ledger, whose body was found in his New York apartment January 22, had painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and other prescription drugs in his system, according to the New York City medical examiner. But they're not going to share what concentrations of each they found, or if one drug played more of a role in his death than any other.

In a statement, his father, Kim Ledger said:

"While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."

Not too long before his death, Ledger spoke to The New York Times:

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night. I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."

Makes you think twice about casually popping a Vicodin with a glass or four of wine.
