Maher is basically coming off as no better than Bill O'Reilly in this clip, a patronising, sneering prick who has no concept of people having different beliefs and opinions to him. LydiaSarah is spot on, particularly in her last sentance.

A film that does not seek to examine the morally complex legacy of religion (which, in this country alone, has produced both far-right fascists AND abolitionist and civil rights leaders), or America's unique, fascinating history of religious diversity, or the vast array of ways that people of all political stripes and walks of life define and express their religious beliefs. No, no, that might actually promote thought, understanding and cultural healing. What we need is Bill Maher smirking and making snide comments at a cherry-picked, non-representative group of fringe morons for a couple hours. (this group includes George Bush.)

As a die-hard political progressive, social liberal, AND one of those "suckers" who believes in God and subscribes to a religion, and doesn't particularly care if other people do, I would love nothing more than to put the Pat Robertson-type religious zealots and the Bill Maher type anti-religious zealots onto a remote island so they ridicule and demonize each other alone until they're blue in the face. That way, maybe the vast majority of religious and secular people, who aren't interested in going on sanctimonious screeds against those who do not share their views on religion could end this stupid, talking head-driven culture war and actually get around to dealing with some of our real problems.
