Trailer Review: The Love Guru

Posted by Paul Clark

Earlier this week, I wrote about the trailer for Step Brothers, the latest comedy from the inconsistent but prolific Will Ferrell. By comparison, Mike Myers only makes a new film every few years — excepting voiceover work in Shrek movies, The Love Guru is his first starring vehicle since (uh oh) 2003's The Cat in the Hat. Given how much time Myers has had to develop this movie, you'd think it would look pretty funny, but alas, you'd be wrong. In this dire Indian-flavored comedy, Myers stars as the guru Pitka, an internationally-famous holy man who comes off like a cross between the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Hrundi V. Bakshi, the Peter Sellers character from The Party, though less serene than Sexy Sadie and not as funny as Mr. Birdy Num-Num. Whether he's engaging in labored physical comedy with a little person or trading quips with sworn enemy of funny Jessica Alba, it's clear that Myers has become a shade of his formerly hilarious self. Sadly, we're now stuck with the Mike Myers who never met a gag he wouldn't repeat half a dozen times, rather than the young tyro who had us (or me, anyway) gasping with his Scots rendition of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." It's a shame, really. I miss that guy.

I first saw this trailer a week ago, sometime after Lost, and I let out this like angry groan. I've never had that reaction to a trailer before, where I felt like the people who made this had personally offended me. You could not pay me to look at a poster for this.

So very, very sad. So sad. I think it might actually make me like Wayne's World less, and I've seen that movie about thirty times over the years. What happened to you, Mike?

It sure ain't So I Married an Axemurderer . . .

Just a contrived vehicle to include the Leafs.  Sheesh.

I wonder why JT signed on for this?

Good, I'm not crazy. I've seen this trailer once. It was a very long trailer and I kept on waiting for it to redeem itself by showing even one moment of the film that appeared to be something besides mind-numbingly stupid. (not the good, funny stupid that Mike Myers used to be so great at). But alas, it only continued to get more stupid until I was actually incredulous at the level of stupidity. And in this day and age of "Meet the Spartans", it takes a lot of stupidity to inspire incredulity.

I hope I never see this trailer, or anything in any way related to this movie again. I'm about to go back to school and I can't afford to get any dumber

He's suffering from "Robin Williams Syndrome," a condition where comedians think, "The public loves me, everything I do is hilarious, I can do no wrong, so I'll just throw out everything I think is funny."  I'm trying to think of other examples of this.  The Whitest Kids U Know season 2 seems to have it so far.  Others?

I hate to play the nitpicking nom Nazi but Maharishi Yogi? Whoever wrote that blurb should blush with shame for not knowing that it's Mahesh Yogi: yes, the one the Beatles flirted with...the results of which were a few ditties that ranged from the cringe-inducing to the pleasant.

Maharishi means great rishi (sage).
