Trailer Review, Comic-Con Special: Watchmen Teaser

Posted by Paul Clark

I guess you could call me old-fashioned, since despite the teaser footage, stills, and hype that has popped up about the upcoming Watchmen movie over the past year, it hasn’t felt real to me until now. And I’ve gotta say, this teaser certainly whets my appetite for the movie. I’d been skeptical about the non-movie-star casting of the movie before, since while I respect director Zack Snyder’s idea that big names would overwhelm the roles themselves, I wasn’t sure if his choices were the right ones, aside from Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach, a choice I’ve loved from the beginning. But seeing them in this context, I buy them a lot more. I guess my only hesitation now is how flashy and eye-candy-filled this teaser is. Yes, I realize that’s what a teaser is for, but I got the same vibe here that I got from 300, a movie for which I had little use. Of course, the source material for Watchmen beats the hell out of 300’s inspiration any day of the week, and if nothing else, the Snyder imprimatur could mean a lot more business for what might otherwise be a niche title. Oh, what the hell am I saying- this will almost certainly be awesome. Right? RIGHT???

It's OK you're only missing a bland Smashing Pumpkins song.

This does look a helluva lot better than I'd expected....it's a little too clean, though. It should look like a cross between Se7en, Taxi Driver and Irreversible.

Otherwise my expectations have now been sufficiently raised.

Ozymandias doesn't look smarmy enough.

Nite Owl doesn't look pathetic enough.

But holy frig is the Comedian spot-on!

I'll be there opening night for sure.

I'm still wondering if they're using either Bowie's or Iggy Pop's version of 'Neighbourhood Threat' in the film.  Snyder's a pretty close reader of the book - I'd like to see it included.

Im reading through Watchmen for the first time; if nothing else this movie (actually your coverage of the movie) made me aware of the novel. Okay, I have been away from it too long.
