TCM Remembers 2008

Posted by Phil Nugent

The annual Turner Classic Movies tribute montage to film scene figures who have died over the course of the past year has become a year-end highlight, a graceful and thoughtfully selected occasion to have a good sniffle. The 2008 edition has hit the airwaves, and as someone who's spent more time than he expected here at the Screengrab writing obituaries, all I can say is--Wait, Robert DoQui died this year!? Shit.

Gosh, Mr. Nugent, I beg to differ (a little): while I'll agree that TCM's tribute is graceful and thoughtful, it was also sappy as all get out. Personally, I would have perferred a montage of clips without the superimposed streams, etc. And the music? Oh boy, too darn over-the-top, the antithesis of subtle. At least when the Oscars does this, a viewer can play the clapping game, seeing who gets the thunderous applause, the polite applause or the murmurs of "awwww..." TCM's reverence was a tad exasperating.

Yeah, I probably should have included a warning that my own tolerance for sap crests pretty high this time of year. Sometimes, watching these things, I just dissolve into a puddle of mush and have to be carried to my next appointment in a bucket by my faithful assistant, Kato. And faithful or not, even he rolls his eyes at me a little.
