Trailer Review: Tokyo!

Posted by Paul Clark

There’s something about omnibus films that always sounds exciting in concept- after all, when you get a half-dozen or so great directors involved in a single film, it would seem to be a sampler platter of awesomeness. Yet how many of these movies are actually any good? Part of the problem is that they generally tap feature filmmakers for these things (rather than short-form masters like, say, Lewis Klahr and Don Hertzfeldt) and not everyone who excels at feature length can translate their skill to the short form. With only three filmmakers involved, Tokyo! would appear to be a safer bet. However, advance word on the film has been mostly mixed, and even negative when it comes to the short by Leos Carax (a shame, considering the guy hasn’t gotten a feature off the ground since Pola X ten years ago). So while I’m eager to see new work by Carax, Michael Gondry, and Bong Joon-ho, this one looks like a wait and see.

Spirits of the Dead is good, or at least two thirds of it are and the other is craptacular.  Can't think of any others off the top of my head.

The Fellini segment is a movie by itself.

I liked two-thirds of "New York Stories", too. Also, having seem "Tokyo", I'll say this for the Carax segment: at least he didn't think small. I mean, hoo-boy!
