Don’t Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

The weenies at the American Medical Association Alliance – and right away, that sounds like a made-up group name that only the weeniest of weenies could come up with – are up in arms over the depiction of cigarettes in He’s Just Not That Into You. Notice I didn’t say the depiction of smoking. That’s because nobody smokes in the movie. I don’t know this firsthand, not having seen He’s Just Not That Into You – I understand they removed all the car chases and shootouts from the book – but that’s what I read in the New York Times, so it must be true.

So if there’s no smoking in the movie, what is this so-called Association Alliance so upset about? It turns out the group “intends to lodge an official complaint on Thursday with Warner Brothers and its corporate parent, Time Warner, over ‘disturbing images of specific cigarette brands in this youth-rated movie,’ said Melissa Walthers, director of the health advocacy group’s effort to reduce teenage smoking.” What disturbing images? Apparently “there are numerous shots of Natural American Spirit Lights, easily identifiable by their bright yellow box.” Also, someone in the group squinted and thought he saw a carton of Marlboro reds, although a representative of the production denies it.

Although He’s Just Not That Into You actually features an anti-smoking storyline, queen of the weenies Walthers is not placated. “It doesn’t really matter if the story line is negative or not in terms of the impact on kids,” she says. That’s right, all the kids need to see is that bright yellow box and it’s all over. Hey, you know what else comes in a bright yellow box? The eight dollar 12-pack of Butterfinger Bites at the concession counter, along with all the other sugary crap your kids are clogging their arteries with while they watch He’s Just Not That Into You – which is, of course, a movie any kid would want to see, or at least buy a ticket for before sneaking into My Bloody Valentine 3D.

Here’s a special treat for Ms. Walthers and all you kids out there. Watch and enjoy!
