Levi Stubbs died at his Detroit home on October 17, at 72. Stubbs was the commanding lead vocalist with the Four Tops, a group that he, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and Lawrence Payton originally formed in 1954 under the name "the Four Aims." They signed to Motown in 1963 and, powered by the awesome dramatic power of Stubbs's voice, carved out a career that included some of the most distinctive hits ("Bernadette", "Standing in the Shadows of Love", "Reach Out I'll Be There", "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'") ever to come out of the house that Berry Gordy built.
