In this 1980 film, Truffaut for the first time addressed explicitly the subject of the French Occupation during World War II, seen here through the prism of a struggling theatre whose Jewish owner is hiding in the basement, leaving his leading-lady wife (played by Catherine Deneuve) to run the day-to-day business. There’s a great deal of intrigue in the film, not only involving a cocky young actor played by Gerard Depardieu, but with any number of Nazi sympathizers, informers, double-crossers, and sneaky Occupation types. But what comes through most clearly on this DVD release (and even more so on the Blu-Ray version) is how gorgeous the film is- how handsomely Truffaut re-created the period without letting the aesthetic concerns overwhelm the narrative ones. Likewise, this may be the most gorgeous Catherine Deneuve was on film- no mean feat, that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The week’s other major classics release is the third volume of Warner’s &lt;i&gt;Forbidden Hollywood Collection&lt;/i&gt;, this one featuring six films from director William Wellman- &lt;i&gt;Other Men’s Women, The Purchase Price, Frisco Jenny, Midnight Mary, Heroes for Sale&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Wild Boys of the Road&lt;/i&gt;. Other classics releases this week include: Lemmon and Matthau (but not Randall and Klugman) &lt;i&gt;The Odd Couple&lt;/i&gt; Centennial Edition (Paramount); Alfred Hitchcock’s &lt;i&gt;To Catch a Thief&lt;/i&gt; Centennial Edition (Paramount); &lt;i&gt;Lilo &amp;amp; Stitch&lt;/i&gt; 2-Disc Big Wave Edition (Disney); the unofficial 007 adventure &lt;i&gt;Never Say Never Again&lt;/i&gt; Collector’s Edition (Fox/MGM); and the &lt;i&gt;Fast and the Furious&lt;/i&gt; trilogy (Universal, also Blu-Ray), with standard DVDs of the films available separately.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The recent releases for this week are highlighted by: Daniel Craig’s second James Bond opus, &lt;i&gt;Quantum of Solace&lt;/i&gt; (Fox/MGM, also Blu-Ray); the animated adjunct to the &lt;i&gt;Watchmen&lt;/i&gt; universe, &lt;i&gt;Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray); John Travolta as a talking dog in &lt;i&gt;Bolt&lt;/i&gt; (Disney); and Anne Hathaway in &lt;i&gt;Passengers&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In TV on DVD news, this week brings: &lt;i&gt;The Venture Bros.&lt;/i&gt; Season 3 (Warner, also Blu-Ray); &lt;i&gt;Star Wars: The Clone Wars- A Galaxy Divided&lt;/i&gt; (Warner); &lt;i&gt;The Riches&lt;/i&gt; Season 2 (Fox); &lt;i&gt;The Life and Times of Tim&lt;/i&gt; (Warner); and &lt;i&gt;Big Stan&lt;/i&gt; (HBO, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s biggest Blu-Ray only release is &lt;i&gt;James Bond Blu-Ray&lt;/i&gt; vol. 3 (Fox/MGM), which includes &lt;i&gt;Goldfinger&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Moonraker&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The World Is Not Enough&lt;/i&gt;, also available separately. If you’re still looking for more action, you can always pick up &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; (Warner). And on the more dramatic side of things, this week finds Paramount release three of its artier films of recent years, &lt;i&gt;A Mighty Heart&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Kite Runner&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Things We Lost in the Fire&lt;/i&gt;. I admit I would be more enthusiastic about these releases if they were films I actually liked, but I do like the idea that studios are actually attempting to spotlight more than just loud action movies on Blu-Ray. Hey, it’s a start.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, I leave you with the Synopsis of the Week, this week courtesy of the FUNimation Entertainment release &lt;i&gt;Fruits Basket Box Set&lt;/i&gt;. Here it is:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;“The Sohma family is cursed; however, this is no ordinary family curse. When a member of the family is embraced by a person of the opposite gender, they transform into an animal of the Chinese Zodiac! but since there&amp;#39;s no other reasonable explanation, I expect to be
cutting a bunch of ribbons until my corrupt administration is thrown in
jail.&amp;nbsp; Enjoy it while it lasts!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Only two movies to mention on Monday, February 23.&amp;nbsp; At 7 pm central/8
pm eastern and again at 10 pm central/11 pm eastern, OVATION is showing
Spalding Gray&amp;#39;s &lt;b&gt;Swimming To Cambodia&lt;/b&gt;, a monologue that highlights what
a fun and nimble mind Gray had.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s directed by Jonathan Demme and
scored by Laurie Anderson, both of which add extra layers of cool.&amp;nbsp;
Then overnight, TCM is showing Jean Renoir&amp;#39;s &lt;b&gt;The Southerner &lt;/b&gt;at 1:15 am
central/2:15 am eastern (2/24).&amp;nbsp; I&amp;#39;ll be honest: &lt;b&gt;The Southerner&lt;/b&gt; can be
a tough movie.&amp;nbsp; Renoir at his best was perhaps the most sympathetic and
humanist director of the 20th century.&amp;nbsp; But he was quite out of his
depth with this movie.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s not terrible, but it&amp;#39;s not his first
tier.&amp;nbsp; Still quite worthwhile for fans of Renoir or star Zachary Scott.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;On Tuesday, February 24, TCM is out of control with awesomeness.&amp;nbsp;
First, at 11:15 am central/12:15 pm eastern, TCM is showing Jacques
Tati&amp;#39;s &lt;b&gt;Mr. Hulot&amp;#39;s Holiday&lt;/b&gt;, which is a funny and charming, if not
uproarious, movie about the habits of the French middle-class during
the 50s.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, TCM is showing François Truffaut&amp;#39;s &lt;b&gt;The 400 Blows
&lt;/b&gt;at 12:45 pm central/1:45 pm eastern.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s not just one of the earliest
classics of the French New Wave, but also a powerful
semi-autobiographical story about institutional mistreatment of
juvenile delinquents.&amp;nbsp; The misbegotten memories of mistreatment of
French youth continues at 2:45 pm central/3:45 pm eastern with Louis
Malle&amp;#39;s &lt;b&gt;Au Revoir, Les Enfants&lt;/b&gt;, which is a semi-autobiographical work
about a boarding school that hides a few young Jews during the Second
World War.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards is René Clément&amp;#39;s &lt;b&gt;Gervaise &lt;/b&gt;at 4:45 pm
central/5:45 pm eastern.&amp;nbsp; I have not seen this movie, but I don&amp;#39;t
believe that it has been released on DVD.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

in the evening with four stone classics of Japanese cinema: &lt;b&gt;The Burmese
Harp &lt;/b&gt;at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern, then &lt;b&gt;Rashomon &lt;/b&gt;at 9 pm central/10 pm
eastern, followed by &lt;b&gt;The Seven Samurai &lt;/b&gt;at 10:30 pm central/11:30 pm
eastern, and finally &lt;b&gt;Kwaidan&lt;/b&gt; at 2 am central/3 am eastern (2/25).&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;The
Burmese Harp &lt;/b&gt;is an anti-war story, &lt;b&gt;Rashomon&lt;/b&gt; is (of course) about the
shifting nature of narrative and observations (or so I recall), &lt;b&gt;The Seven Samurai &lt;/b&gt;is the
greatest film the world has ever known (although I don&amp;#39;t mean to overpraise it - and, well, I&amp;#39;m not) and &lt;b&gt;Kwaidan&lt;/b&gt; is a collection of ghost
stories.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Also of note on Tuesday night is &lt;b&gt;The Order of Myths&lt;/b&gt;, appearing on the
show Independent Lens, which most PBS channels run at 10 pm central/11
pm eastern on Tuesdays.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;The Order of Myths &lt;/b&gt;is one of the best
documentaries of 2008, which was an unusually strong year for
documentaries.&amp;nbsp; The movie deals with the racially divided Mardi Gras of
Mobile, Alabama with a deft touch that makes villains of none while
carefully examining the history of racism and power that created the
situation.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s stunningly great, and I don&amp;#39;t just say this because I
grew up in Mobile and am intimately familiar with the sticky racial and
familial issues that filmmaker Margaret Brown bravely tackles.&amp;nbsp; If you
miss this because of your dedication to the Kurosawa movies on TCM,
check your listings.&amp;nbsp; My PBS channel is showing it again overnight on
Wednesday night/Thursday morning at 3 am central time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

central/6 am eastern.&amp;nbsp; In the evening, there&amp;#39;s Bogey and Hepburn in &lt;b&gt;The
African Queen &lt;/b&gt;at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern and later Roman Polanski&amp;#39;s

on IFC.&lt;br /&gt;4:05/5:05 pm: &lt;i&gt;The Thin Red LIne &lt;/i&gt;on IFC.&amp;nbsp; Malick’s unconventional anti-war drama is a force of nature. &amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;5/6 pm: &lt;i&gt;The Cincinnati Kid&lt;/i&gt; on TCM.&amp;nbsp; What could be more exciting than Steve McQueen playing high-stakes poker?&lt;br /&gt;7/8 pm: &lt;i&gt;Shadow of a Doubt&lt;/i&gt; on TCM.&amp;nbsp; Great little second-tier Hitchcock film that ought to be in the first tier.&lt;br /&gt;11 pm/12 am: &lt;i&gt;The Third Man&lt;/i&gt; on TCM.&amp;nbsp; If you like movies and haven’t seen this, you MUST rectify your oversight immediately.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Wednesday, December 17:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8:30/9:30 pm: &lt;i&gt;Death on the Nile&lt;/i&gt; on TCM.&amp;nbsp; A Hercule Poirot mystery that was a favorite of mine when I was a kid.&amp;nbsp; The nonstop excitement practically screams “heavyset Belgian detective!”&lt;br /&gt;8/9 pm: &lt;i&gt;The Thin Red Line &lt;/i&gt;on IFC.&lt;br /&gt;11 pm/12 am: &lt;i&gt;The New World&lt;/i&gt; on IFC. That&amp;#39;s a lot of Malick for one sitting!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Thursday, December 18:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:30/2:30 am: &lt;i&gt;The Thin Red Line&lt;/i&gt; on IFC.&lt;br /&gt;4:25/5:25 am: &lt;i&gt;The New World &lt;/i&gt;on IFC.&lt;br /&gt;9:15/10:15 am: &lt;i&gt;The Naked City&lt;/i&gt; on TCM.&amp;nbsp; One of the greatest film noirs.&lt;br /&gt;10:30/11:30 pm: &lt;i&gt;Blade Runner&lt;/i&gt; on SCIFI.&amp;nbsp; Always worth a viewing.&lt;br /&gt;11 pm/12 am: &lt;i&gt;Vanishing Point&lt;/i&gt; on FMC.&amp;nbsp; As the Zen koan says, &lt;i&gt;-There is no why.&amp;nbsp; There is only Kowalski driving through the desert.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Friday, December 19:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;12/1 am: &lt;i&gt;Before Sunset&lt;/i&gt; on WE.&amp;nbsp; I try not to mention movies that will be broken by commercials, but this one, a sequel to 1995’s &lt;i&gt;Before Sunrise&lt;/i&gt;, has a certain charm in its older, wiser take on young love. &lt;br /&gt;1:30/2:30 am: &lt;i&gt;Elephant&lt;/i&gt; on IFC.&amp;nbsp; Dreamy Van Sant flick about high school snipers.&lt;br /&gt;3/4 am:&lt;i&gt; Vanishing Point&lt;/i&gt; on FMC.&lt;br /&gt;8:45/9:45 am: &lt;i&gt;Paths of Glory&lt;/i&gt; on TCM.&lt;br /&gt;5:30/6:30 pm: &lt;i&gt;The Others &lt;/i&gt;on OXYGEN. Fritz Lang’s 1933 thriller that didn’t just invent the procedural, but built it on a parable about a crime boss able to mesmerize his subordinates with his words and imagery. Lang fled the Nazis for America almost immediately after its release. The ability of many of the scenes to retain their shock value today is a testament to this movie&amp;#39;s sheer brilliance.&lt;br /&gt;12:15/1:15 pm: &lt;i&gt;Gosford Park&lt;/i&gt; on IFC.&lt;b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Monday, December 22:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2:45/3:45 am: &lt;i&gt;The 400 Blows&lt;/i&gt; on TCM. Francois Truffaut’s incredibly powerful ode to child neglect and juvenile delinquency. &lt;br /&gt;7/8 am: &lt;i&gt;Au Revoir, Les Enfants&lt;/i&gt; on IFC. Fantastic Louis Malle flick about a boarding school in France during the Nazi occupation that’s hiding a young Jew.&lt;br /&gt;11 am/12 pm: &lt;i&gt;Bringing Up Baby&lt;/i&gt; on TCM.&amp;nbsp; A border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;This week brings plenty of thrills on Blu-Ray and some interesting arthouse releases coming to DVD. Oh, and some guy with a whip.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Conundrum of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; Terrence Malick’s &lt;i&gt;The New World&lt;/i&gt; is one of my favorite movies of all time. So why am I not more excited about this week’s release of the “Extended Cut” of the film? You’d think that I would welcome the opportunity to see even more of the film, to luxuriate in its irresistible Malick-ness. Yet I find myself torn. On the one hand, I’m encouraged by the fact that Malick re-cut the film himself, which leads me to believe that maybe he just needed more time to get his vision fine-tuned to his exact specifications (I still yearn, in vain I fear, for his 6-hour cut of &lt;i&gt;The Thin Red Line&lt;/i&gt;). But it was the theatrical cut that I fell in love with in the first place. So why can’t the boys at Warner just do what Universal did last week and release all three existing cuts of &lt;i&gt;The New World&lt;/i&gt; in one handy box set? Now, &lt;u&gt;there&lt;/u&gt; would be an occasion worth celebrating. I know, I know- I’m thinking about it too much. But that’s what they pay me for, after all…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also notable this week is MGM’s &lt;i&gt;Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection&lt;/i&gt;, which contains eight Hitchcock titles from their library and features many new commentary tracks and archival material including Hitchcock being interviewed by Peter Bogdanovich and Francois Truffaut. The big titles in the set are &lt;i&gt;Rebecca&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Spellbound&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Notorious&lt;/i&gt;, each of which went out of print on Criterion DVD a few years ago, and which are now available separately as well as in the set. Other titles in the set are &lt;i&gt;The Paradine Case&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Sabotage&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Young and Innocent&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Lifeboat&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Lodger&lt;/i&gt;. Other classics coming to DVD include: a new release of Robert Altman’s &lt;i&gt;Short Cuts&lt;/i&gt; (Criterion), Kon Ichikawa’s &lt;i&gt;An Actor’s Revenge&lt;/i&gt; (Koch), &lt;i&gt;Capricorn One&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate), and the 15th Anniversary of &lt;i&gt;Chaplin&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate), which features what’s still Robert Downey Jr.’s sole Oscar nomination to date.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The week’s biggest recent release on DVD is, of course, &lt;i&gt;Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount, also Blu-Ray), a movie which I enjoyed but which disappointed a number of fans including Trey Parker and Matt Stone. But if you’re one of the &lt;i&gt;Indy&lt;/i&gt; naysayers, check out one or more of this week’s crop of new indies: Errol Morris’ &lt;i&gt;Standard Operating Procedure&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray), the Genghis Kahn origin story &lt;i&gt;Mongol&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray), the Cannes-anointed &lt;i&gt;The Edge of Heaven&lt;/i&gt; (Strand Releasing), and this year’s Golden Bear-winner at Berlin, &lt;i&gt;Elite Squad&lt;/i&gt; (Genius Productions). Or if you’ve got a little too much cash jangling around in your pockets, you can always either buy &lt;i&gt;The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie&lt;/i&gt; (Universal) or drive by your local Best Buy and throw $20 out of your car window, both of which produce about the same effect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s TV on DVD releases include: &lt;i&gt;CSI&lt;/i&gt; Season 8 (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Back to You&lt;/i&gt; Season 1 (Universal), &lt;i&gt;Nash Bridges&lt;/i&gt; Season 1 (Paramount), and &lt;i&gt;The Unit Season 3&lt;/i&gt; (Fox).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, this week’s releases are a fairly action-packed bunch, including thrills of all sorts. For true-crime thrills, try &lt;i&gt;Eastern Promises&lt;/i&gt; (Universal), &lt;i&gt;American Gangster&lt;/i&gt; (Universal), or &lt;i&gt;Casino&lt;/i&gt; (Universal). If you’ve got a taste for blood, give &lt;i&gt;Interview With the Vampire&lt;/i&gt; (Warner) a spin. For adventure and romance, there’s always the double feature of &lt;i&gt;Romancing the Stone&lt;/i&gt; (Fox) and &lt;i&gt;Jewel of the Nile&lt;/i&gt; (Fox). If you like your action spiced liberally with cyberpunk, you probably don’t need me to tell you about this week’s release of &lt;i&gt;The Ultimate Matrix Collection&lt;/i&gt; (Warner). For some Halloween chills, check out &lt;i&gt;Poltergeist&lt;/i&gt; (Warner). And if you don’t really care for good movies, &lt;i&gt;Constantine&lt;/i&gt; (Warner) should satisfy your movie-watching urges just fine.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;img alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Filmed in 1957, just a few years after his outstanding USC student documentary &lt;i&gt;Bunker Hill&lt;/i&gt; was released and taking place in the same run-down neighborhood in Los Angeles (even some of the establishing shots, at a busy supermarket and on a steep trolley car going up and down the hill known as &amp;quot;Angel&amp;#39;s Flight&amp;quot;), Kent MacKenzie&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Exiles &lt;/i&gt;follows a day in the life of a small group of unemployed American Indians living more or less hand to mouth.&amp;nbsp; The men spend their days sleeping and their nights drinking themselves into oblivion, while the women tend to their families or choose someone to spend the night with before the inevitable fighting breaks out.&amp;nbsp; It wasn&amp;#39;t released until 1961, and MacKenzie would only make one more movie before his death in 1980; but what he leaves behind in &lt;i&gt;The Exiles &lt;/i&gt;is a fascinating film that blends a documentary subject with a narrative approach, traditional framing techniques with French New Wave camerawork, and neo-realist situations and dialogue with contemplative internal monologues.  &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Shown on a double bill at the Armand Hammer Museum&amp;#39;s Billy Wilder Theater in Los Angeles recently, &lt;i&gt;The Exiles &lt;/i&gt;follows the surly, overweight Homer Nish; his trusting, pregnant common-law wife Yvonne Williams; and the drunken, womanizing smoothie Tommy Reynolds through a typical day.&amp;nbsp; Unsparing in its treatment of their character, but never failing to show the social and economic conditions that affect them, the film shows both the nobility and baseness of its subjects, and along the way creates one of the most fully realized portraits of the American Indian in film history.&amp;nbsp; A brief interlude on the Arizona reservation that is home to Nish&amp;#39;s parents provides a much-needed break in the action, contrasting what the &amp;#39;exiles&amp;#39; left behind with their daily reality and segueing smoothly back into the contemporary action. &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Exiles&lt;/i&gt; isn&amp;#39;t without its flaws.&amp;nbsp; The awkward dubbing doesn&amp;#39;t much help the delicate balance between documentary and narrative MacKenzie is attempting to construct, and much of the film is terminally slow-paced.&amp;nbsp; In fact, the first two-thirds of the movie are almost dreary; it&amp;#39;s not until the men head for a nearby undeveloped area they call &amp;quot;Hill X&amp;quot; and attempt to drunkenly recreate the cultural rituals of their people that it becomes a hypnotic piece of work.&amp;nbsp; But MacKenzie&amp;#39;s camera eye was unimpeachable, and almost every frame of &lt;i&gt;The Exiles &lt;/i&gt;is beautifully shot; and the ending scene is as heartbreaking as anything from the catalog of Francois Truffaut.&lt;b&gt;

Yet even in foreign lands, our influence nevertheless pervades the art form: the original French title of François Truffaut’s shaggy dog charmer is &lt;em&gt;La Nuit américaine&lt;/em&gt;, a phrase referring to the filmmaking process known here as day-for-night, which literally translates as “American night.” While the main plot of Truffaut’s love letter to his chosen profession involves the offscreen dramas of several above-the-line divas starring in &lt;em&gt;Day For Night&lt;/em&gt;’s film within a film, &lt;em&gt;Je Vous Présente Paméla&lt;/em&gt; (&lt;em&gt;Meet Pamela&lt;/em&gt;), it’s the below-the-line grips, prop men and other crewmembers who are the workaday heart of this naturalistic depiction of the hard work and small victories of any and every film production, an exhilarating, exasperating process where success or failure rests not in the director’s vision or the ultimate quality of the end result, but rather on a zillion unpredictable details like a small cat deciding whether or not to drink milk from a saucer while a dozen otherwise sane adults stand around, clutching heavy equipment, praying to get the shot they need before they lose the light. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER&amp;#39;S APOCALYPSE (1991)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Eleanor&amp;#39;s published journal about the experience, &lt;em&gt;Notes&lt;/em&gt;, was published the same year that &lt;em&gt;Apocalypse Now&lt;/em&gt; was released, but the sensitive footage she shot would remain unseen until filmmakers George Hickenlooper and Fax Bahr took on the task of piecing it together and adding new interviews, narration (by Eleanor Coppola) and such choice outtakes as the infamous &amp;quot;French Plantation sequence&amp;quot;, Marlon Brando improvising his way to oblivion, and a broken, drunken Martin Sheen picking a fight with his own reflection and losing. A fascinating story well told, and a better amplification of the original movie than &lt;em&gt;Apocalypse Now Redux&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE PLAYER (1992)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dQfTrhueDhg&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Robert Altman was never one to shy away from biting the hand that fed him, and this adaptation of Michael Tolkin&amp;#39;s scathing Hollywood novel is a prime example. Altman&amp;#39;s meta methods reveal themselves right off the bat with a tour-de-force 8-minute tracking shot that gets you thinking about the opening of &lt;i&gt;Touch of Evil&lt;/i&gt; just as two onscreen characters start discussing the opening of &lt;i&gt;Touch of Evil&lt;/i&gt;. The scores of celebrities appearing as themselves lend an unprecedented verisimilitude to the proceedings, anticipating a huge wave of inside show-biz entertainment to follow, from &lt;i&gt;The Larry Sanders Show&lt;/i&gt; to &lt;i&gt;Entourage&lt;/i&gt;. In Altman&amp;#39;s hands, the satire is never cartoonish, even when a studio exec (Tim Robbins) is realizing every Hollywood suit&amp;#39;s fantasy by killing a screenwriter (Vincent D&amp;#39;Onofrio) with his bare hands. Indeed, at times it&amp;#39;s barely satire – as in the serious issue film about capital punishment that&amp;#39;s transformed by committee into a Bruce Willis action movie with a happy ending. (Three years later, the Demi Moore version of &lt;i&gt;The Scarlet Letter&lt;/i&gt; would demonstrate just how far-fetched that plot twist wasn&amp;#39;t.) The fact that &lt;i&gt;The Player&lt;/i&gt; was the director&amp;#39;s biggest hit in decades, making him (at least briefly) a player again is perhaps the most Altmanesque touch of all. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;CONTEMPT (1963)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Godard holds nearly everyone and everything involved with the movie in contempt: its producers, its stars, its characters, its audience, and even itself.&amp;nbsp; He doesn&amp;#39;t even spare himself from the bile, using the movie&amp;#39;s lead character, Michel Piccoli, as a stand-in representing his own willingness to sacrifice his artistic principles for a shot at a fat paycheck. The movie&amp;#39;s plot is the basest and best of &lt;em&gt;romans a clef&lt;/em&gt;, so directly mirroring the real-life action behind the scenes that seeing it is practically living it: a crass, commercially-minded American film director (played with loathsome glee by Jack Palance, and meant to be a transparent duplicate of &lt;em&gt;Contempt&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#39;s actual producer, Joseph Levine) hires an idealistic playwright who takes a scriptwriting job for the paycheck and the three of them – joined by the movie&amp;#39;s director and the writer&amp;#39;s girlfriend – begin to deeply hate each other throughout the entire course of the film. As if daring the audience not to like the movie, Godard frustrates our expectations at every turn: a violent confrontation fizzles out instead of exploding, an erotic meditation is coldly robbed of its sexuality, and what should be a cathartic emotional confrontation turns into an enervating argument. Gould scuffled for work for many years before 1970&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;M*A*S*H&lt;/i&gt; made him not just a star but a counterculture icon and a &lt;i&gt;Time&lt;/i&gt; cover boy.  Just a couple of years after his anointment by newsmagazine, bad career decisions and personal choices had left Gould with his head in a bad place and reputation for being not just borderline unemployable but, as Pauline Kael put it (not unaffectionately), an &amp;quot;anachronism.&amp;quot; These days, Gould is regarded not as a superstar or a flake but a pretty solid pro--okay, maybe a flaky pro--and his best performances  particularly the work he did for Robert Altman in &lt;i&gt;M*A*S*H, The Long Goodbye&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;California Split&lt;/i&gt;, hold up as well as anything done in front of a camera in the 1970s. (His Philip Marlowe in &lt;i&gt;The Long Goodbye&lt;/i&gt;, once a lethal flop, is now widely remembered as one of the great comebacks of all time.) &lt;a href="http://www.bam.org/film/series.aspx?id=198"&gt;&amp;quot;Elliott Gould: Star for an Uptight Age&lt;/a&gt; (August 1--21) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music features all those pictures as well as Gould&amp;#39;s first significant movie role, as one of the titular quartet in Paul Mazursky&amp;#39;s 1969 satirical time capsule &lt;i&gt;Bob &amp;amp; Carol &amp;amp; Ted &amp;amp; Alice.&lt;/i&gt; In an interview in the current issue of &lt;i&gt;Stop Smiling&lt;/i&gt; that centers on &lt;i&gt;California Split&lt;/i&gt;, Gould calls himself &amp;quot;a jazz actor&amp;quot;, and in these musical, improvisationl performances, which have a tossed-off feeling that belies their technical daring and emotional depth, it&amp;#39;s easy to see what he means. The program is padded out with other early-&amp;#39;70s pictures that mostly serve to chart the course by which Gould contrived to stay employed in movies between gigs with Bob and Paulie. (The big exceptions are the limper than limp &lt;i&gt;I Love My Wife&lt;/i&gt; and the overblown, hollow &lt;i&gt;Harry and Walter Go to New York&lt;/i&gt;, which don&amp;#39;t serve any purpose whatsoever.) &lt;i&gt;Getting Straight&lt;/i&gt;, one of Gould&amp;#39;s biggest hits, is a campus-unrest flick directed by Richard (&lt;i&gt;The Stunt Man&lt;/i&gt;) Rush that provides a taste of what a thinking-young-person&amp;#39;s exploitation movie was like circa 1970. &lt;i&gt;Busting&lt;/i&gt; (1974), an attempt to package law-and-order politics in a loose, sort-of-comic Gouldian package, wound up being most notable as the movie that taught Starsky and Hutch how to dress. And Ingmar Bergman&amp;#39;s 1971 &lt;i&gt;The Touch&lt;/i&gt;, a movie that did Gould no good in any department--it didn&amp;#39;t do Bergman any favors either--is worth checking out if you&amp;#39;re a Bergman completist or would like to see just why so many people thought that, by that point, Gould had already worn out his welcome.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Starting August 2 and running through most of the month, the Museum of Modern Art&amp;#39;s &lt;a href="http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=6732"&gt;&amp;quot;Collaborations in the Collection&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt; series spotlights Joel and Ethan Cohen, a pair of filmmakers whose collaborative creator was kind of inevitable. But as the programming points up, the Coens have also made a virtue of repeatedly teaming up with those they&amp;#39;ve done good work with, including cinematographers Barry Sonnenfeld (&lt;i&gt;Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller&amp;#39;s Crossing&lt;/i&gt;) and Roger Deakins (everything else, basically) as well as the composer Carter Burwell and such actors as John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Jon Polito, and Frances MacDormand, whose collaboration with Joel Coen extended to matrimony.

&lt;b&gt;CHICAGO:&lt;/b&gt; At the Gene Siskel Film Center, &lt;a href="http://www.artic.edu/webspaces/siskelfilmcenter/2008/august/1.html"&gt;the 14th Annual Black Harvest International Festival of Film and Video&lt;/a&gt; --&amp;quot;The Midwest’s biggest and best celebration of the black experience on film, Black Harvest highlights talent from around the nation and around the world, with a special emphasis on our own Chicago-based filmmakers&amp;quot;--will run from August 1 through the 28th. On August 5, critic and interviewer Elvis Mitchell, last seen on the Turner Classic Movies series &lt;i&gt;Under the Influence&lt;/i&gt;, where he barely managed to overcome his shock at hearing Quentin Tarantino confess that he has never seen the Judy Garland &lt;i&gt;A Star Is Born&lt;/i&gt;, will swing by with a print of his new HBO film &lt;i&gt;The Black List, Vol. 1&lt;/i&gt; tucked under his arm, and the night after that will include a special screening of the monumental new Katrina documentary &lt;i&gt;Trouble the Waters.&lt;/i&gt; A smaller but still very affecting documentary touched by Katrina, &lt;i&gt;Faubourg Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans&lt;/i&gt;, is also among the many feature films and shorts.

From August 2 through the 24th, the Siskel Center will host &lt;a href="http://www.artic.edu/webspaces/siskelfilmcenter/2008/august/2.html"&gt;&amp;quot;Paradjanov the Magician&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt;, a celebration of the vibrantly colored, strange and moving work of the Soviet-Armenian director Sergei Paradjanov. It includes a new print of his masterpiece, &lt;i&gt;Shadows of Our Fogotten Ancestors.&lt;/i&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;SAN FRANCISCO&lt;/b&gt;: Kent MacKenzie&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Exiles&lt;/i&gt;, a stunning, black and white semi-documentary look at a group of Native Americans drifting through a dazed, aimless existence in Los Angeles&amp;#39;s Bunker Hill, was recently plucked from forgotten obscurity by some hardy restorers and, &amp;quot;presented by&amp;quot; Native American novelist Sherman Alexie and Charles Burnett, recently started making its way across the country thanks to Milestone, the same company that brought Burnett&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Killer of Sheep&lt;/i&gt; back from the dead. It &lt;a href="http://www.thecastrotheatre.com/p-list.html#exiles%22"&gt;plays the Castro&lt;/a&gt; August 1 through the 7th.

Although Goodis was American and many of the films included here were Hollywood productions, the best known titles are both French: Francois Truffaut&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Shoot the Piano Player&lt;/i&gt; (1960), based on Goodis&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Down There&lt;/i&gt;, which remains one of the freshest and most thrilling products of the New Wave, and Jean-Jacques Beinex&amp;#39;s 1983 &lt;i&gt;The Moon in the Gutter&lt;/i&gt;, which remains one of the ghastliest things ever brought into the world by the misguided will of man.

&lt;b&gt;LOS ANGELES&lt;/b&gt;: August 1 and 2, the Los Angles County Museum of Art presents &lt;a href="http://www.lacma.org/programs/FilmSeriesSchedule.aspx"&gt;&amp;quot;Two Comedies by Pietro Germi&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt;, and they&amp;#39;re the right two: the justly famous &lt;i&gt;Divorce Italian Style&lt;/i&gt; (1961) and the even funnier follow-up &lt;i&gt;Seduced and Abandoned&lt;/i&gt; (1964), both featuring the luscious comedienne Stefania Sandrelli. The only way to imagine a better package for a hot weekend would be if the museum would spring for a lemonade waterfall.

Our regular weekly In Other Blogs column was on holiday hiatus last week, but a friend of the Screengrab has alerted us to a blogular feature that our loyal readers should be made aware of as soon as possible.  (And if you are already aware of it, please just humor us.)  A staple of any self-respecting cineaste’s library is the 1967 coffee table book &lt;i&gt;Hitchcock/Truffaut&lt;/i&gt;, in which one of the leading lights of the French New Wave conducts a series of in-depth interviews with the Hollywood master covering his entire body of work.  (Having no self-respect myself, I’ve always just read copies owned by friends while using their bathroom facilities.  Perhaps you didn’t need to know that.)

The blog If Charlie Parker Was a Gunslinger, There&amp;#39;d Be a Whole Lot of Dead Copycats is running an ongoing series (up to 20 installments as of this writing) called &lt;a href="http://tsutpen.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Hitchcock%2FTruffaut%20Tapes" target="_blank"&gt;The Hitchcock/Truffaut Tapes&lt;/a&gt;.  And that’s exactly what it is: the raw tapes of the Alfred Hitchcock interview sessions conducted by Francois Truffaut with the aid of translator Helen Scott.  Even if you don’t foresee yourself wading through every one of the entries, it’s well worth dipping your toe in once or twice, if only for the you-are-there factor.  The awkward pauses, interrupted translations, odd snorts and grunts and occasional chewing of food – it’s all there, along with the occasional fresh insight.  As you’ll see, blogger Tom Sutpen provides commentary for the early entries, but seems to have abandoned that plan in the later going.  Truffaut fans may be glad about that, as you’ll see.

Fifteen years earlier, Truffaut and Godard had been friends and comrades, self-educated film nuts and critics who were beginning to make good on their shared dream of becoming filmmakers. Truffaut&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The 400 Blows&lt;/i&gt; premiered at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, and was such a success that Godard was able to get funding for his own debut feature, &lt;i&gt;Breathless&lt;/i&gt;, by having Truffaut agree to pretend that he had written the script. (&lt;i&gt;Breathless&lt;/i&gt; originated with a news story about a young car thief turned killer that Truffaut had considered filming himself before making &lt;i&gt;The 400 Blows.&lt;/i&gt;) The two had achieved fame as the twin giants of the French New Wave, but they had gradually drifted apart, both in their aesthetic aims and their personal relationship. In his letter, Godard accused Truffaut of having made a dishonest movie but also brought the happy news that he had a way for Truffaut to repent: he offered to allow Truffaut to use some of his ill-gotten proceeds to fund a movie by Godard that would tell the truth about film sets, with a political-minded focus on the people who do the grunt work. The sensitive, gentle-natured Truffaut freaked out; he sent Godard a lengthy reply in which he discharged years&amp;#39; worth of pent-up resentments and declared that Godard&amp;#39;s radicalism, which Godard wore as a badge of honor even as it limited his access to the large audiences that turned out for Truffaut&amp;#39;s movies, was actually practiced in bad faith: &amp;quot;Between your interest in the masses and your own narcissism there&amp;#39;s no room for anyone or anything else.&amp;quot; The two men were never friends again but remained obsessed with each other. The way Richard Brody tells this story, in &amp;quot;The Auteur Wars&amp;quot; in the current &lt;i&gt;The New Yorker&lt;/i&gt;, the most poignant irony in all this is that Godard&amp;#39;s letter, which ended with the line, &amp;quot;If you want to talk it over, fine,&amp;quot; may have been a heartfelt attempt on his part to reconnect. Janine Bazin, the widow of the great French critic Andre Bazin, told Truffaut that it sounded to her as if Godard &amp;quot;must be unhappy and he doesn&amp;#39;t have the same way of being unhappy as others.&amp;quot;

Truffaut died in 1984; Godard lives, and still persists in making movies, though after a brief return to mainstream-art house consciousness after the 1980 &lt;i&gt;Every Man for Himself&lt;/i&gt;, his more recent work has drifted back to extreme-minority-audience status. The two of them liberated movies, but they were fated to take wildly different paths, and it makes all the sense in the world both that they would not be able to sustain their friendship and that neither of them would be able to quite get over the other. That would turn out to be a pretty steady gig, as he went on to reprise the character in three more features made between 1968&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Stolen Kisses&lt;/em&gt; to the 1979 &lt;em&gt;Love on the Run&lt;/em&gt;. All of them are included here, along with Truffaut&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Day for Night&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Two English Girls&lt;/em&gt; and Leaud&amp;#39;s work for Godard (&lt;em&gt;La Chinoise, Masculine Feminine&lt;/em&gt;, and &lt;em&gt;Weekend&lt;/em&gt;, in which he has a cameo), Jacques Rivette (&lt;em&gt;Out 1: Spectre&lt;/em&gt;), and Jean Eustache (&lt;em&gt;The Mother and the Whore&lt;/em&gt;). The more recent films include Olivier Assayas&amp;#39; &lt;em&gt;Irma Vep&lt;/em&gt;, which finds Leaud once again involved in making a movie within a movie, and another cameo appearance in &lt;em&gt;La Vie de Boheme&lt;/em&gt;, arguably the funniest movie by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also at PFA: &lt;a href="http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/filmseries/expdocs_jan2008"&gt;&amp;quot;Vegetable, Mineral: Recent Experimental Documentaries&amp;quot; (January 15 - February 26)&lt;/a&gt; will include evenings devoted to the work of James Benning, Maryam Kashani, Rene Daalder, and the radical media collective Paper Tiger TV. On February 5, the program will also incorporate a presentation and booksigning by Alexandra Juhasz and Jesse Lerner, authors of the news study &lt;em&gt;F Is for Phony.&lt;/em&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;LOS ANGELES:&lt;/strong&gt; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art spends the weekend trying to get to the bottom of that sweet mystery of life that is &lt;a href="http://www.lacma.org/programs/FilmSeriesSchedule.aspx"&gt;David Lynch&lt;/a&gt;. Friday night, the museum screens Lynch&amp;#39;s short films, while Saturday it celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of &lt;em&gt;Eraserhead&lt;/em&gt; with a showing of a restored print of the film, a bad dream we never get tired of hearing recounted. On both nights, they&amp;#39;re showing the strange new documentary &lt;em&gt;Lynch&lt;/em&gt;, in which our hero can be seen directing &lt;em&gt;Inland Empire&lt;/em&gt;, explaining to Laura Dern why she should be flattered when he calls her &amp;quot;tidbit&amp;quot;, talking about the bad old days in Philadelphia, and letting the cigarette butts pile up on the concrete floor of his office. Maybe if enough people show up, the museum will have a heart and buy the guy an ashtray. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;NEW YORK:&lt;/strong&gt; For two weeks starting January 18, Film Forum brings back Alain Resnais&amp;#39; &lt;a href="http://www.filmforum.org/films/marienbad.html"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Last Year at Marienbad&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, the icy, beautiful 1961 film that did its part to make European cinema seem like a stylish thing to puzzle over.
