She&amp;#39;s maintained her place in the rotation even though I&amp;#39;ve managed to see less and less of her as the years go by. A quick peek at IMDB confirms that she&amp;#39;s never stopped working for very long, but it became clear pretty fast in the 1980s that she wasn&amp;#39;t going to become a movie star, partly because she&amp;#39;s never done &amp;quot;kittenish&amp;quot;, and she&amp;#39;s spent an awful lot of the past ten years working in movies that nobody saw and in TV shows about doctors that I didn&amp;#39;t see. (I&amp;#39;m a hypochondriac. The last thing I need is to spend my down time learning about new symptoms.) Her last good role in a movie worthy of her time was in &lt;i&gt;Gone Baby Gone&lt;/i&gt;, and it&amp;#39;s probably not a coincidence that the picture also featured Ed Harris--her husband, who she met on the set of &lt;i&gt;Places in the Heart&lt;/i&gt; and with whom she also co-starred in Louis Malle&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Alamo Bay, Winter Passing&lt;/i&gt;, the TV film &lt;i&gt;Riders of the Purple Sage&lt;/i&gt;, and Harris&amp;#39;s own directorial debut, &lt;i&gt;Pollack&lt;/i&gt;. One interesting aspect of her having been married to Harris for most of both their film careers may be that Madigan always has an easy reminder of how much easier it is for men to slide back and forth between a (relatively) great variety supporting and ensemble roles and character leads than it is for a woman.

Madigan has always had such strength and power onscreen that it must have cost her some roles--big roles that were being cast by people who find such power in a woman intimidating (and who extrapolate from that that folks in the audience will have trouble &amp;quot;relating&amp;quot; to her) and also small roles where the worry is that she&amp;#39;ll stand out too much, as if it&amp;#39;s supposed to be a bad thing when an actress is cursed with having such an effect on audiences that they can&amp;#39;t take their eyes off her. This may be something that Madigan can&amp;#39;t do much about, since she doesn&amp;#39;t seem to be one of those performers who disappear into the woodwork when they&amp;#39;re not acting. At the 2001 Academy Awards, when Elia Kazan tottered out to collect his Lifetime Achievement Oscar, the camera picked her out, sitting in the audience, next to her husband, not clapping. I mean, she was &lt;i&gt;not clapping&lt;/i&gt; up a goddamn storm, and glowering silently at the spectacle onstage. I remember the sight of her better than I remember most of the movies that were nominated that year. (I also remember looking at Harris and thinking, My God, son, if you know what&amp;#39;s good for you, &lt;i&gt;you&amp;#39;d&lt;/i&gt; better not clap!)

This &amp;quot;true&amp;quot; story about a woman who entered prison at 19, had an affair with a guard, got pregnant, and fought for the right to hold onto her baby while in prison was directed by the infamous Larry Peerce, and in most respects, it&amp;#39;s a like a Lifetime movie on hillbilly heroin. (Mackenzie Phillips failed to stage a comeback through her role as the prison&amp;#39;s ducktailed head bull dyke.) But it was Madigan&amp;#39;s first starring role, and those of us who saw it when it came out--on HBO, I mean, nobody saw this thing when it was in theaters--really knew we were seeing something. Madigan carries the movie to the movie on her back. She was in her early thirties but looked much younger, and uses her fireplug quality--the short frame seemingly on the verge of exploding from its own surplus of energy--very effectively to convey the David-and-Goliath side of the story, but without a trace of parthos; she&amp;#39;s not a David you&amp;#39;d bet against. A year later, she got to give birth after a nuclear holocaust in the TV film &lt;i&gt;The Day After&lt;/i&gt;, raising fears that she might be on the verge of being typecast as pregnant women carrying to term symbolic tokens of a second chance.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;LOVE LETTERS (1983)&lt;/b&gt;: This quiet, searching, imperfect yet emotionally rich film was written and directed by Amy Jones, and at the time it came out, it inspired some loose talk that it might be part of a new run of films looking at sex and love from a woman&amp;#39;s perspective. (It wasn&amp;#39;t, at least not from Amy Jones, whose subsequent films as writer and/or director amount to a steaming pile of junk, from &lt;i&gt;Indecent Proposal&lt;/i&gt; and the Halle Berry vehicle &lt;i&gt;The Rich Man&amp;#39;s Wife&lt;/i&gt; to the &lt;i&gt;Beethoven&lt;/i&gt; films. Earlier, she directed &lt;i&gt;The Slumber Party Massacre&lt;/i&gt; from an original script by the novelist Rita Mae Browne. That one has a cult rep among people who want to believe that it must be intended as some kind of parody. People will always be kind...) The movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis as a single woman who, having found a cache of old letters written to her late mother by a man not her father, is compelled to jump into an affair with a married photographer (James Keach). Curtis is brilliant, and her scenes with Keach are fine, but it&amp;#39;s the scenes she has with Madigan, playing her best friend, that set a new standard for capturing the distinctive rhythm of two intelligent women who care a lot about each other talking around the fact that one of them is doing something very, very stupid.

Madigan has spent so much time playing rural and country  women of good peasant stock that it&amp;#39;s a real kick getting to see her as an urban action warrior. In Walter Hill&amp;#39;s deranged &amp;quot;rock &amp;amp; roll fable&amp;quot;, she plays McCoy, a two-fisted, pistol-packing super-mechanic with a tough-gal catch phrase: &amp;quot;Are we gonna talk about it, or are we gonna do it?&amp;quot; If Hill has employed her to hang around him when he was working on his scripts and bark that line out whenever his mind started to wander, he might have had more of a career since Ronald Reagan&amp;#39;s first term. The movie stars Michael Pare, once a highly touted star of tomorrow who might as well have had &amp;quot;Where Are They Now?&amp;quot; scrawled across his birth certificate, as a pretty-boy bad-ass who&amp;#39;s on a rescue mission to save his ex-girlfriend (Diane Lane) from the clutches of Willem Dafoe and his band of toughs. (They&amp;#39;re so bad, they force the Blasters to perform for Jennifer Beals&amp;#39;s body double in &lt;i&gt;Flashdance.&lt;/i&gt;) When Pare and Madigan join forces, the movie seems to think that now she&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;his&lt;/i&gt; sidekick. It&amp;#39;s so cute! Legend has it that Hill originally asked Madigan to read for the part of Pare&amp;#39;s sister, and that after she&amp;#39;d done so, she pointed out to him that McCoy (who was originally written as a man) was the only part in the script worth a damn and, you know, what have done for me lately, Walter? Maybe if she&amp;#39;s tried that line on her husband, she would have gotten to play Jackson Pollack.

&lt;b&gt;CARNIVALE (2003--2005)&lt;/b&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; This HBO series would probably be finishing up its run right about now if the network had committed to the six-year plan that the producers intended. Instead, they cut it off after two seasons--and few who saw the second-season finale walked away thinking they had reason to complain, because the show seemed already to be doing a thorough job of swallowing its own tail. The show, about occult hocus-pocus set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, was a murky stab at an instant &lt;i&gt;Twin Peaks&lt;/i&gt;-style cult hit, but it did provide you with a way to check in on Madigan week after week. The living image of the &amp;quot;New York actor&amp;quot;, Silver, was something of a specialist in fast-talking, saturnine cynics, an association that became even greater after he won a Tony Award for his semi-legendary performance as a Hollywood shark in David Mamet&amp;#39;s 1988 Broadway hit &lt;i&gt;Speed-the-Plow&lt;/i&gt;. Silver&amp;#39;s performances in the Mamet play and in David Rabe&amp;#39;s 1984 &lt;i&gt;Hurlyburly&lt;/i&gt;--neither of which, sadly, he got to repeat on film--cemented his image as the great white way&amp;#39;s modern notion of a successful movie industry sleazeball. Ironically, he never became the star in movies that he was onstage, but he  had a long and healthy career in TV and movies anyway. After a barely detectable film debut in the unfunny underground comedy &lt;i&gt;Tunnel Vision&lt;/i&gt; (1977) and a recurring role alongside a fellow Broadway baby on 1980&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Stockard Channing Show&lt;/i&gt;, Silver began to develop a name for himself in movies with his rambunctiously funny performances in the romantic comedies &lt;i&gt;Best Friends&lt;/i&gt; (1982), in which he played, yes, a Hollywood producer, and &lt;i&gt;Lovesick&lt;/i&gt; (1983), in which his character, a Hollywood star returning to his New York stage roots, gave him the chance to mock Al Pacino. 
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Throughout the rest of the decade, Silver would move freely from stage to TV to movie roles, including a starring role in Sidney Lumet&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Garbo Talks&lt;/i&gt; (1984). His peak of national visibility probably came in 1989 and 1990, when he played Jerry Lewis&amp;#39;s son in a multi-episode story arc of the cult series &lt;i&gt;Wiseguy&lt;/i&gt;; gave the performance of his movie career as the lead in Paul Mazursky&amp;#39;s superb movie version of Isaac Bashevis Singer&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Enemies, a Love Story&lt;/i&gt;; stalked Jamie Lee Curtis as a deranged stockbroker turned serial gunman in Kathryn Bigelow&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Blue Steel&lt;/i&gt;; starred as a leftish screenwriter navigating the 1950s blacklist era in the British TV film &lt;i&gt;Fellow Traveller&lt;/i&gt;; and don a Groucho mustache to play Alan Dershowitz in counterpoint to Jeremy Irons&amp;#39;s Oscar-winning turn as Claus von Bulow in Barbet Schroeder&amp;#39;s torn-from-the-headlines &lt;i&gt;Reversal of Fortune.&lt;/i&gt; 
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Though he continued to work steadily, his days of playing leads in theatrical features that people went to see receded behind him, and he began to enjoy his best opportunities in movies as a campy villain, in such movies as the Jean-Claude Van Damme picture &lt;i&gt;Timecop&lt;/i&gt; (1994), where he confronted his younger self with a plea that he lay off the candy bars, and &lt;i&gt;The Arrival&lt;/i&gt; (2006), where he got to deliver a speech explaining that global warming was part of a plan for an imminent extraterrestrial takeover of the Earth. (He parodied this side of his career in the famous Ben Stiller-directed, unaired TV pilot &lt;i&gt;Heat Vision and Jack&lt;/i&gt;, in which he played a sinister character named Ron Silver whose acting career was a cover for his principal occupation of serving &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2009/03/13/sxsw-review-new-world-order.aspx"&gt;the conspiracy to install a New World Order.&lt;/a&gt;) He made his directing debut with the 1993 TV film &lt;i&gt;Lifepod&lt;/i&gt;, a sci-fi variation on Hitchcock&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Lifeboat&lt;/i&gt;. He returned to the courtroom to play Robert Shapiro in &lt;i&gt;American Tragedy&lt;/i&gt;, a 2000 O. J. Simpson docudrama written by Norman Mailer, was hilarious as tennis hustler Bobby Riggs in the TV film &lt;i&gt;When Billie Beat Bobby&lt;/i&gt; (2001), convincingly dogged as Angelo Dundee in Michael Mann&amp;#39;s The Greatest biopic &lt;i&gt;Ali&lt;/i&gt; (2001), and reunited with Lumet for &lt;i&gt;Find Me Guilty&lt;/i&gt; (2006), yet another fact-based courtroom drama, for which he was upgraded from lawyer to judge.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Silver also had recurring or regular roles on the TV series &lt;i&gt;Chicago Hope&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Veronica&amp;#39;s Closet, Skin&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The West Wing&lt;/i&gt;, where he played a political consultant who, over the course of the show, had a political conversion from left to right. Silver himself experienced his own sea change after September 11, 2001, and became a highly public proponent for his changed views, making the rounds of the TV talk shows, appearing at the 2004 Republican National Convention, and &lt;a href="http://www.pajamasmedia.com/ronsilver/"&gt;blogging for Pajamas Media.&lt;/a&gt; He also narrated &lt;i&gt;FahrenHYPE 9/11&lt;/i&gt; (a 2004 documentary response to Michael Moore&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Fahrenheit 9/11&lt;/i&gt;, and co-directing, with Kevin Knoblock, the documentary  &lt;i&gt;Broken Promises: The United Nations at 60&lt;/i&gt;. Inspired by the terrific new documentary &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/09/23/fantastic-fest-review-not-quite-hollywood-quot.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Not Quite Hollywood&lt;/a&gt;, the Screengrab is proud to present Ozsploitation!, our own survey of the golden age of Australian drive-in movies. Pop a tube, throw another shrimp on the barbie and try not to chunder. 
&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Richard Franklin’s &lt;i&gt;Roadgames&lt;/i&gt; is like &lt;i&gt;Rear Window &lt;/i&gt;on wheels.  I wish I could take credit for that observation, but I cribbed it from the director himself.  Franklin is a self-proclaimed Hitchcock buff; he directed &lt;i&gt;Psycho II&lt;/i&gt;, but &lt;i&gt;Roadgames&lt;/i&gt; is actually the more Hitchcockian achievement – a zesty soufflé of humor, action, suspense and a dollop of ambiguity.  (I stole “soufflé” from Franklin, too – what can I say, the man is an astute appraiser of his own work.)  It’s such a fun little flick, I have no idea why I’d never seen it before now.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Stacy Keach reveals a playful side that has eluded me until now as truck driver (or “truckie” as those whimsical Aussies call him) Patrick Quid.  Driving a load of pork across the Nullarbor Plain to Perth, Quid has no one to talk to except his dingo Boswell.  He manages to amuse himself nonetheless, playing harmonica and inventing stories about his fellow travelers of the only highway around.  (Because there’s no other route across the continent, he’s always catching up to the same vehicles he’s seen at diners and gas stations along the way.)  He’s particular intrigued by a man driving a green van, who he spots poking around a motel garbage dumpster in the wee hours of the morning.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
We know something Quid doesn’t, as we’ve already seen this man put on a pair of racing gloves and strangle a naked woman in his motel room.  Quid’s suspicions are heightened by a radio broadcast warning of a serial killer in the area.  Although regulations forbid him from picking up hitchhikers, he can’t resist.  His first passenger, a chatty middle-aged woman, soon develops her own suspicions about Quid.  His second, attractive young Pamela (Jamie Lee Curtis), proves to be his match in the realm of serial killer theorizing.  As they close in on the mystery man in the van, however, she may turn out to be his next victim.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The long road across the Nullarbor is marked by spectacular scenery, small pockets of civilization and a gaggle of oddball characters.  Aside from a brief campfire interlude, Franklin keeps the pedal to the metal; memorable set pieces include a game of chicken between Quid and an inexplicably aggressive motorist hauling a boat trailer, as well as the finale in which truck, van and police car all converge in very tight quarters.  Curtis, who was still the Queen of Scream at this point in her career, is fine in what turns out to be a fairly small part, but this is Keach’s show all the way – it may be his liveliest, most charismatic performance.  As Hitchcock riffs go, I’ll take this one over most of the De Palma catalogue any day.

That doesn&amp;#39;t keep them from flogging its backside, of course; there have been eleven &lt;i&gt;Friday the Thirteenth&lt;/i&gt; movies, eight Freddy Krueger flicks, and so many James Bond movies that they&amp;#39;re starting to use grocery lists written by Ian Fleming on the back of cocktail napkins as their source material.&amp;nbsp; The Saw franchise is already on its fifth installment, despite the fact that the first movie opened roughly three weeks ago, and I&amp;#39;m pretty sure they were filming the sixth and seventh movies at the craft table of the set of the fifth one.&amp;nbsp; Compared to this level of sequel overinflation, you might think that the venerable &lt;i&gt;Halloween &lt;/i&gt;franchise is a virtual model of restraint.&amp;nbsp; That&amp;#39;s what I thought, anyway, when I decided to watch every single one of them in a row.&amp;nbsp; Frankly, I didn&amp;#39;t even think there was enough of it to make a Take Five; I was completely convinced that the ultra-bizarre &lt;i&gt;Halloween III&lt;/i&gt; had killed the thing off until Rob Zombie decided to bring it back with his 2007 remake of the original.&amp;nbsp; It turns out there were &lt;i&gt;five more sequels&lt;/i&gt; before the White Zombie frontman took a swing at reviving Michael Myers.&amp;nbsp; A chilling prospect, but lucky you:&amp;nbsp; this Halloween, you won&amp;#39;t have to read my mini-reviews of each one.&amp;nbsp; The first five will do, but believe me:&amp;nbsp; simply living in a world that has &lt;i&gt;Halloween 6:&amp;nbsp; The Curse of Michael Myers&lt;/i&gt; in it should scare you more than anything else about the holiday. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;HALLOWEEN&lt;/i&gt; (1978)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Often credited as the movie that kick-started the whole slasher-film genre, &lt;i&gt;Halloween&lt;/i&gt; doesn&amp;#39;t really deserve that title.&amp;nbsp; For one thing, it&amp;#39;s too good.&amp;nbsp; Tautly directed by John Carpenter, and featuring performances by genuine movie actors like Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance, &lt;i&gt;Halloween&lt;/i&gt; was likewise a big-budget picture with a canny script, a plausible if terrifying villain, and actual production values.&amp;nbsp; The future would belong to movies like &lt;i&gt;Friday the Thirteenth&lt;/i&gt;, which would be released a few years later and combine all the low-budget qualities of an indie production with the bloody aesthetic of Carpenter&amp;#39;s best work, but none of the smarts or skills.&amp;nbsp; If it can&amp;#39;t lay claim to being the progenitor of the genre, though, &lt;i&gt;Halloween&lt;/i&gt; can at least say that it&amp;#39;s one of the best; it still holds up years later, and makes what came after that more of a waste.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;HALLOWEEN II&lt;/i&gt; (1981)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Literally picking up where the first movie left off, &lt;i&gt;Halloween II &lt;/i&gt;had the advantage of being written by Carpenter and his partner Debra Hill and the immediacy of the same characters and situations, but that&amp;#39;s about it.&amp;nbsp; The filming was put in the hands of the far less competent Rick Rosenthal; the producers tinkered a lot with Carpenter and Hill&amp;#39;s script; the movie looks dismal and kluged-together despite a much higher budget; and, in keeping with the new slasher aesthetic ushered in by the likes of &lt;i&gt;Friday the Thirteenth&lt;/i&gt;, it forsook tension, mood and suspense for low-budget mysticism, cheap shocks, and gore, gore, gore.&amp;nbsp; It cost twice as much as its predecessor but made half the money, and it would stand as one of the most disappointing sequels of the era -- until people got a look at the next installment. &amp;nbsp; &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/10/23-End/halloween3.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/10/23-End/halloween3.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;HALLOWEEN III:&amp;nbsp; SEASON OF THE WITCH&lt;/i&gt; (1982)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Almost as if to prove to the millions of people who hated &lt;i&gt;Halloween II&lt;/i&gt; that they didn&amp;#39;t know how good they had it, the next sequel, made a year later by the mysterious Tommy Lee Wallace, was bad enough on its own:&amp;nbsp; its plot was incomprehensible, its pace was glacial, its story made no sense, and with the exception of cult favorite character actor Tom Atkins in the lead role, its cast was a dud.&amp;nbsp; Worse still, though, it had absolutely nothing to do with the previous movies.&amp;nbsp; Michael Myers was nowhere to be found, and the story -- involving a tycoon who intended to turn the heads of all the children of the world into slithering insects with the aid of high-tech Halloween masks (no, really) -- had no apparent connection to the first two movies.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Wallace claimed he was trying to turn the franchise into a sort of horror anthology, &lt;i&gt;a la&lt;/i&gt; &amp;quot;Night Gallery&amp;quot;; but he didn&amp;#39;t seem to have told anyone beforehand, nor was he able to adequately explain why.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;HALLOWEEN IV:&amp;nbsp; THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS&lt;/i&gt; (1988)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;So thoroughly did &lt;i&gt;Season of the Witch &lt;/i&gt;tarnish the reputation of the &lt;i&gt;Halloween&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;franchise that it would be six years before producer/propertyholder Moustapha Akkad gave it another whirl.&amp;nbsp; He apparently spent those six years looking for someone who would answer &amp;quot;yes&amp;quot; to the questions &amp;quot;will you put Michael Myers back in the movie?&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;will you take a check?&amp;quot;; that someone Dwight H. Little, and the movie he made featured an answer to the first question right in its title.&amp;nbsp; The plot, such as it is, features the comatose Myers arising to kill and kill again; the movie brings back Donald Pleasance to add a touch of class, but other than that, its new cast, new creative team, and new focus bring absolutely nothing to the table.&amp;nbsp; In some ways, it&amp;#39;s even worse than &lt;i&gt;Halloween III&lt;/i&gt;; at least that movie had some ideas, even if they were all bad ones. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;HALLOWEEN V:&amp;nbsp; THE REVENGE OF MICHAEL MYERS&lt;/i&gt; (1989)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Made roughly three seconds after &lt;i&gt;Halloween IV &lt;/i&gt;wrapped, the fifth installment ended up competing with its predecessor, which was just then being released on home video.&amp;nbsp; To be honest, I have a lot of trouble telling the two apart:&amp;nbsp; the cover art is indistinguishable, the plot is identical, and both movies feature a fucked-up-looking Donald Pleasance collecting another paycheck.&amp;nbsp; If you&amp;#39;re still keeping track at home, this is the one that introduces some additional supernatural mumbo-jumbo, with Danielle Harris suddenly discovering, after two movies, that she has a psychic link with her uncle Mikey; Granted, I haven’t seen everything, but it’s hard to believe there’s a more outrageously entertaining movie at this year’s Fantastic Fest than Mark Hartley’s “Ozsploitation” documentary &lt;i&gt;Not Quite Hollywood&lt;/i&gt;.  Virtually the entire history of the Australian film industry from its inception in the early ‘70s to the rise of home video in the late ‘80s is crammed into its 110 minutes, with a decided emphasis on drive-in fare over gauzy period pieces.  And what drive-in fare it was – based on the evidence here, the Aussie exploitation movies were faster, cheaper, gorier and downright crazier than their American counterparts.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
In the beginning, there was no Australian film industry outside the occasional international production such as &lt;i&gt;Age of Consent&lt;/i&gt; with James Mason.  With the introduction of the R rating in 1971, all of that changed.  It began with lewd and crude sex comedies like &lt;i&gt;The Adventures of Barry McKenzie&lt;/i&gt; and the very popular &lt;i&gt;Alvin Purple&lt;/i&gt; series, featuring Fosters-swilling Outback yahoos getting it on with large-breasted, very nude women.  By the middle of the decade, these movies had given way to action and horror pictures, most of them little-known in America.  Aussie Roger Cormans like Brian Trenchard-Smith and Antony I. Ginnane churned out exploitation films with titles like &lt;i&gt;Turkey Shoot&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Man from Hong Kong&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Dark Age&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Dead-End Drive In&lt;/i&gt;.

Apparently there wasn’t much in the way of regulation and oversight in those days; as we learn from interview subjects ranging from Barry “Dame Edna” Humphries to – of course – Quentin Tarantino, the makers of these films had few qualms about staging car crashes on public roads or setting their actors on fire.  The stuntmen were up for seemingly anything, as you can see in the trailer below.  (The official &lt;a href="http://www.notquitehollywood.com.au/video/?videoId=trailer" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Not Quite Hollywood&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; site has a number of vintage trailers for these films as well.)  As with the Corman factory, a number of “respectable” filmmakers got their starts in Ozploitation, including Simon Wincer, Bruce Beresford and of course, George Miller.  A few productions had sufficient budgets to import an American star or two, such as Stacey Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis for &lt;i&gt;Roadgames&lt;/i&gt; and (most memorably) Dennis Hopper for &lt;i&gt;Mad Dog Morgan&lt;/i&gt;.

Admittedly, this subject matter is right up my alley.  As I never fail to remind you, my book &lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Hick-Flicks-Rise-Redneck-Cinema/dp/0786419970" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Hick Flicks: The Rise and Fall of Redneck Cinema&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; (which makes a great Halloween present) deals with the Southern-fried drive-in movies of the ‘70s and ‘80s, so watching &lt;i&gt;Not Quite Hollywood&lt;/i&gt; was like stumbling upon a hidden mirror universe of that era.  The Aussies even have their own word for redneck – “ocker” – and certainly a fetish for automobile culture to rival our own.  (They also have spectacular, desolate locations, great accents and funny words like billabong and didgeridoo, and for these reasons and many others, I plan on catching up on some of these movies by launching a new weekly Ozploitation series here at the Screengrab, starting this Thursday.)  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;
Not Quite Hollywood&lt;/i&gt; isn’t perfect – for all its encyclopedic breadth, it barely touches on the Aboriginal actors in Aussie cinema – but it’s a raucous, informative and often very funny roller coaster ride through a neglected time and place in film history.

Walker, and celebrated presidential candidate/crazy person Ron Paul, we are shown how our unthinkably huge national debt may lead to war, inflation, the collapse of our international alliances, economic catastrophe, dogs and cats living together, and mass hysteria.&amp;nbsp; But hey, every movie with those three wonderful letters ‘U.S.A.’ in the title has to be about how we’re all doomed because of the short-sighted policies of warmongering, tax-cutting, pork-barreling, corporate-welfare-loving presidential administrations!&amp;nbsp; Maybe it’s just some residual patriotism from the Fourth of July, but this movie inspired us to create a Take Five featuring other ‘U.S.A’ movies that aren’t quite so bleak.&amp;nbsp; Or, at least, don’t have so many pie charts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;UNDERWORLD U.S.A.&lt;/i&gt; (1961)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;A little-seen late-period noir from the underrated Sam Fuller, &lt;i&gt;Underworld U.S.A.&lt;/i&gt; is a flawed film, particularly in its underwhelming cast, predictable action, and sometimes hokey dialogue.&amp;nbsp; But Cliff Robertson is dynamite as Tolly Devlin, a man who, after seeing his father murdered by two-bit hoods, decided that revenge is a dish served straight out of the freezer, as he spends the next 20 years infiltrating their organization.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;MADE IN U.S.A.&lt;/i&gt; (1967)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;One of the most impenetrable relics from when Jean-Luc Godard really started to go off the narrative rails and into an experimental/revolutionary world of his own, &lt;i&gt;Made in U.S.A.&lt;/i&gt; purports to be – and, to a certain albeit incomprehensible degree, actually is – an adaptation of one of Donald Westlake’s “Richard Stark” novels.&amp;nbsp; Bu really, it’s just a glorious excuse for Anna Karina to lounge around in a (French-speaking) Atlantic City hotel room, talking about socialism.&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/08/16-22/harlancounty.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/08/16-22/harlancounty.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;HARLAN COUNTY U.S.A.&lt;/i&gt; (1976)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Barbara Kopple set out to make a documentary about the bitter electoral dispute that was tearing the United Mine Workers union apart in the mid-1970s.&amp;nbsp; Instead, after visiting an unauthorized strike in Harlan County, Kentucky, she found a new subject:&amp;nbsp; the desperation, suffering, and nobility of the miners as they struggled to survive under the weight of bosses who crippled them at every turn.&amp;nbsp; Moving, gripping, suspenseful, infuriating, enraging, affirming and beautiful – everything a good documentary should be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;GRANDVIEW, U.S.A.&lt;/i&gt; (1984)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Made during that period of the 1980s where they would apparently greenlight a movie about any old thing, this forgotten relic by Randal “&lt;i&gt;The Blue Lagoon&lt;/i&gt;” Kleiser involves a painfully underfed C. Thomas Howell, who is a race car driver and aspiring oceanographer for some reason, falling in love with Jamie Lee Curtis, who owns the local demolition derby in the grand tradition of movie sports bosses who look nothing like Bud Selig.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;INVASION U.S.A.&lt;/i&gt; (1985)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Now we’re talkin’!&amp;nbsp; After all this &amp;#39;waah-waah, the economy is failing, the unions are dying, some gangsters killed my dad&amp;#39; nonsense, here comes Chuck Norris, with a sleeveless denim shirt and a big pickup truck, to make everything all right.&amp;nbsp; He does this by single-handedly wiping out a huge invasion force, consisting of a wide variety of swarthy foreign nationals, who have had the unmitigated audacity to take over some of our finest shopping malls.&amp;nbsp; Now &lt;i&gt;that’s&lt;/i&gt; the U.S.A.
