As one of the few defenders of Ang Lee&amp;#39;s 2003 &lt;i&gt;Hulk&lt;/i&gt; – and as someone who picked &lt;i&gt;The Incredible Hulk&lt;/i&gt; to be &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/01/screengrab-predicts-the-top-5-bombs-of-summer-2008.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;the biggest bomb &lt;/a&gt;of this summer – I readily admit to having some preconceived notions about &lt;i&gt;Transporter &lt;/i&gt;director Louis Leterrier&amp;#39;s take on the latest Marvel comics adaptation.  This would be the part where I tell you how pleasantly surprised I was to be proven wrong…but unfortunately, that didn&amp;#39;t happen.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 
The big question all along about &lt;i&gt;The Incredible Hulk&lt;/i&gt; has been: What is it?  Is it a sequel to the Ang Lee movie?  A remake?  It&amp;#39;s sort of neither, which turns out to be the cleverest aspect of Leterrier&amp;#39;s movie.  As the opening credits roll, we see a montage of scenes from a previous Hulk movie that never existed.  A Hulk origin sequence closer to the 1970s TV show than either the comics or the previous movie plays out as Dr. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) uses himself as a guinea pig in an experiment with high-level gamma radiation.  We know what happens, so why dwell on it?  Within two minutes, Banner has Hulked out, smashed up the lab, destroyed his relationship with fellow scientist Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) and pissed off her father General “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt), who vows to pursue him to the ends of the earth.  It’s as if Letterier is saying, “Let’s just pretend we all saw this movie and be done with it.”  And really, that’s perfectly in keeping with the Hulk’s Marvel comics universe, where new writers and artists are constantly taking over his story and retroactively tweaking his origins.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 
As the story proper begins, Banner has been on the run for five years.  Now working in a Brazilian bottling plant, Banner has learned to keep the Hulk under wraps with a few simple deep breathing exercises.  His serenity doesn’t last, as General Ross and his troops – including British commando Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) &lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;– &lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;track him down and unleash the beast within Banner.  The Hulk escapes but the hunt continues, pretty much for the rest of the movie.   In order to boost his chances against the green goliath, Blonsky undergoes a series of injections that promise to transform him into a super-soldier.  Banner reunites with Betty, who helps him find Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson), a genetic scientist who may be able to cure him.  Instead, Sterns ends up transforming Blonksy into the Abomination, an even bigger, uglier mass of roid-rage than the Hulk.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 
As expected, &lt;i&gt;The Incredible Hulk&lt;/i&gt; is louder, faster and more action-packed than the 2003 version.  Every twenty minutes or so, Ross and his goons show up and there’s another big battle.  (The most entertaining one, in which Ross keeps escalating the level of artillery to no avail, almost plays like a Monty Python sketch.)  By the end, when the Hulk and Abomination are going mano-a-mano in the streets of New York, the movie resembles less a Marvel comic than an updated &lt;i&gt;King Kong vs. Godzilla &lt;/i&gt;– you’re basically aware you’re just watching one big slab of pixels punching the crap out of another big slab of pixels.  The Hulk actually looks pretty good most of the time, especially if it’s dark or raining.  The humans don’t come off quite as well.  I’m willing to bet this isn’t the cut Edward Norton had in mind, but that’s okay – I didn’t need a lot more Banner torment in my life.  Roth doesn’t do much but glower, Tyler’s role is even more thankless than the Jennifer Connelly version of same, and when it comes to mustachioed generals, William Hurt is no Sam Elliott.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 
Leterrier does try to provide a little something for everyone.  There are inside references for the comic book fans, geeky cameos by Stan Lee, Lou Ferrigno, and someone else who is supposed to be a surprise, except that his appearance is all over the TV ads in what smells like a desperate marketing stunt, and jokes about stretchy purple pants.  (The best gag involves Norton’s mangling of the signature “You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry” line.)  And we finally get to hear that immortal call to action, “HULK SMASH!”  There’s even a brief stab at Ang Lee’s more lyrical, haunting tone as the Hulk broods on a cliff in a rainstorm.  But the whole thing plays like it’s been focus-grouped to death, stripped of any real personality of its own.  It may not end up being the biggest bomb of the summer – stuff does blow up real good, after all – but despite hints of another sequel, it provides no compelling reason for the Hulk’s big screen career to continue.

Yeah, yeah, Ang Lee makes beautiful movies. Oh, &lt;i&gt;Brokeback Mountain&lt;/i&gt; is a romantic masterpiece! &lt;i&gt;Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon&lt;/i&gt; is a ballet of sound and emotion! &lt;i&gt;The Ice Storm&lt;/i&gt; is tense, suburban tragedy at its finest! Fuck all that. Ang Lee made &lt;i&gt;Hulk&lt;/i&gt;. He is the director who thought giant CGI dogs and Nick Nolte were a good combination.  Marvel Pictures is banking on the whole world to have shoved that atrocity out of their minds as &lt;i&gt;The Incredible Hulk&lt;/i&gt; is a reboot for the franchise and from the looks of this trailer, it’s a fine upgrade. We’ve gone from Eric Bana to Ed Norton (awesome), giant CGI dogs to giant CGI Tim Roth (double awesome), and sloppy introspection to big, dumb action (not necessarily awesome but wise). There are some downgrades (Jennifer Connelly to Liv Tyler is not awesome) but things are looking good. Ed Norton is pitch-perfect as Bruce Banner in these scenes, a perfect mix of frightened and exhausted. It’s nice to see Tim Roth back in a blockbuster as well. I was beginning to think that &lt;i&gt;Planet of the Apes&lt;/i&gt; had done scared him off for good!

Stevens was best known as the creator of the Rocketeer, an adventure character that first appeared in various titles published by Pacific, a short-lived independent comics company in the early 1980s. (After Pacific went out of business, he jumped to other now-defunct &amp;quot;independent&amp;quot; comics publishers--Eclipse, Comico--before winding up at Dark Horse.) Set in Los Angeles in the years leading up to World War II, the comics centered on Cliff Secord, a scrappy young stunt pilot who battles Nazis and performs other acts of derring-do after stumbling across a portable jet pack that turns him into a two-fisted flying fool. The comics inspired a 1991 movie, directed by Joe Johnston, that worked hard to capture the look of Stevens&amp;#39;s comics, and with a cast that included Bill Campbell in the lead, Jennifer Connelly as his girl Betty, and Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton (in a role modeled on Errol Flynn), and Terry O&amp;#39;Quinn, of &lt;i&gt;Lost&lt;/i&gt;, as Howard Hughes.

The movie was okay, but Stevens had essentially already made his own &lt;i&gt;Rocketeer&lt;/i&gt; movie; he just did it on paper.  He didn&amp;#39;t turn out many pages of Cliff Secord&amp;#39;s adventures, because he put so much painstaking work into them that there were long, long lulls between the appearance of each new short chapter, an effect that was amplified by the fact that his publishing companies kept dying on him. It was worth the effort he put into them. (The film critic Charles Taylor described them as &amp;quot;little pieces of kitsch heaven.&amp;quot;) Stevens was really crazy about the pop culture of a certain place and time, and part of what set his work apart was that he was driven to lavish his loving eye and craftsmanship on some very tacky, and even sleazy, love objects. Secord was a carny hanger-on making a buck any way he could, and his beloved Betty was explicitly modeled on the pin-up icon Bettie Page, whose image Stevens did a hell of a lot to resurrect and immortalize. (He also rediscovered, and befriended, the actual Ms. Page, who probably never expected to outlive him.) The &amp;quot;Rocketeer&amp;quot; comics also incorporated a lot of period Hollywood lore, as well as nods to such iconic ephemera as the masked  image of the Saturday-matinee hero Commander Cody,  Rondo Hatton, and the Doc Savage sidekick Monk Mayfair. Stevens earned his right to slap all this stuff together by giving it a unifying visual dazzle and afectionate spirit. But it&amp;#39;s easy to forget that the master had already had a fruitful career long before &lt;i&gt;Ninotchka&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Shop Around the Corner&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;To Be or Not to Be&lt;/i&gt;. With the films included in this box set, Lubitsch was one of the first filmmakers to integrate song and narrative after the advent of talkies. But this would mean little today if the films themselves didn&amp;#39;t hold up, and they do, with all of Lubitsch&amp;#39;s trademark charm and Pre-Code sophistication. Eclipse has given their typical treatment (no extras, but lovely transfers) to the films &lt;i&gt;The Love Parade&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Monte Carlo&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;One Hour With You&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Smiling Lieutenant&lt;/i&gt;, which boast some of the era&amp;#39;s quintessential stars — Maurice Chevalier, Claudette Colbert, and Jeannette MacDonald. The centerpiece of the set is a new 40th Anniversary Edition of Kramer&amp;#39;s once-controversial interracial-marriage drama &lt;i&gt;Guess Who&amp;#39;s Coming to Dinner&lt;/i&gt;. Also in the set is the Kramer-directed &lt;i&gt;Ship of Fools&lt;/i&gt;, as well as &lt;i&gt;The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;A Member of the Wedding&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Wild One&lt;/i&gt;, all of which he produced. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

brothers&amp;#39; &lt;em&gt;The Eye&lt;/em&gt; arriving in theaters this coming Friday — and with the new Hollywood remake of Takashi Miike&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;One Missed Call&lt;/em&gt; hustling out to make room for it — Terrence Rafferty ponders this thing called &lt;a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/27/movies/27raff.html?pagewanted=print"&gt;the glut of American remakes of recent Asian horror pictures.&lt;/a&gt; (Not everything gets a pithy term around here.) The success of Gore Verbinski&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;The Ring&lt;/em&gt; (based on the Japanese film &lt;em&gt;Ringu&lt;/em&gt;, and Takashi Shimizu’s &lt;em&gt;The Grudge&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;, the director&amp;#39;s English-language remake of his own &lt;em&gt;Ju-On&lt;/em&gt;, guaranteed that there will many more films of this kind, even though, whether taken individually or as a singular continental phenomenon, adapting Asian horror movies for the Hollywood assembly line is a precarious business. Not that there aren&amp;#39;t worse ways to go about it: as Rafferty notes, back in &amp;quot;the Stone Age of exploitation-movie history, shrewd Hollywood producers would simply have done what they did with the Japanese monster movies of that era: chop them up, hastily dub them into English and — if the repackagers were feeling particularly frisky — shoot a few minutes of new footage with a minor, familiar and presumably desperate American actor. Say what you will about remakes, they seem, all in all, a better option than Raymond Burr in &lt;em&gt;Godzilla.&lt;/em&gt;&amp;quot; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What neither remaking or recutting can easily finesse is the special mood — a haunting, eerie gloominess that seems to link a familiarity with ghosts to a lack of faith in any long-term future on this earth — that permeates so many of the original films. When Takashi Shimizu agreed to go through the chore of making &lt;em&gt;Ju-On&lt;/em&gt; again — a task that he must have found to be a congenial one, since he&amp;#39;s also made sequels to both the Japanese and American versions and is about to bring forth &lt;em&gt;The Grudge 3 &lt;/em&gt;— he was canny enough to have Sarah Michelle Gellar, Bill Pullman, Clea DuVall and William Mapother come to Japan, rather than risk trying to make the story&amp;#39;s underpinnings take root in, say, Boston. (Rafferty singles out &lt;em&gt;Dark Water&lt;/em&gt; starring Jennifer Connelly and directed by Walter Salles, as a rare example of an uprooted Asian ghost story that works rather well in its new setting — a damp, crumbling fortress of an apartment complex on Roosevelt Island.) Then there are the special idiosyncrasies of some of the filmmakers who have been drawn to this material. There has to be an easier way to make a living than trying to render a Takashi Miike screenplay clear and understandable to a mass audience — didn&amp;#39;t it ever occur to Eric Valete, the director of the American version of &lt;em&gt;One Missed Call&lt;/em&gt;, that he might be happier walking through open fields in Eastern Europe, to see if there were still active land mines in the area? Nor is there any need to translate the remarkable work of the Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who is less a formulaic genre filmmaker than a nightmare poet (and a disciple of Val Lewton) working out his own fantasies of isolation and apocalyptic loneliness, into incoherent junk like the recent &lt;em&gt;Pulse&lt;/em&gt;, with Kristen Bell. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for &lt;em&gt;The Eye&lt;/em&gt;, Rafferty detects &amp;quot;a half-detectable increase in optimism&amp;quot; in the new version, which means that the haunted quality that makes the original so hard to shake off may have been lost in translation: &amp;quot;That stranger-in-a-strange-land feeling might be induced by, say, the production values of the American version of &lt;em&gt;The Eye,&lt;/em&gt; which, in their relative luxuriousness, suggest a happier, more hopeful view of the world than the starker sets of the Pang brothers do; or by the casting of sunny-looking Jessica Alba as the heroine, played in the original by the beautiful but grim-faced Lee Sin-je. The role is essentially the same: A young blind woman has her vision restored by cornea transplants and begins to see, along with the ordinary sights of everyday life, disturbing, unaccountable visions of shadowy afterlives.
