Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bryan Cranston have all signed up for &lt;i&gt;Red Tails&lt;/i&gt;.  “John Ridley wrote the script, which revolves around the young pilots who overcame institutional racism in the military to form the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots in U.S. military history. Their planes featured the red-painted tails that give the film its title,” &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118002165.html?categoryid=13&amp;amp;cs=1" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; reports.  George Lucas is producing, but mercifully not directing.

The Duplass brothers will write and direct &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i701e5f503331aba03c2bb29b58471f77" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Table 19&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; for Fox Searchlight.  The film will revolve around “those wedding guests quarantined at the dreaded ‘singles table.’ Told from the points of view of the strangers randomly thrown together, the story explores what marriage means to those on the sidelines.”

The plot synopsis on Wikipedia sounds far more entertaining than the actual film, what with its dirty hypnotism, 1930s Genghis Khan revivalism and Phurba, the living knife (no relation to Furby or Flowbee). But even after reviewing the plot and rewatching a few YouTube clips, there are still only three things I really remember about the film. One, it co-stars Penelope Ann Miller...almost never a good sign. Two, the villain (played by John Lone) uses mental powers to make New Yorkers think his luxury hotel is invisible...a neat trick somebody oughta teach Donald Trump. And finally (and most memorably), my old pal Radmar Jao has the best line in the movie, advising someone not to light up in the hero’s secret lair: “No smoking in the Skull Cave.” Oh...wait a minute...that was that OTHER completely unmemorable 1990s adaptation of a 1930s comic: &lt;em&gt;The Phantom&lt;/em&gt;, starring Billy Zane and Kristy Swanson (easily winning the bland-off with Miller). But, hey...at least Radmar was good. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ROAD TO PERDITION (2002)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Tom Hanks plays Michael Sullivan, a hit man working for Paul Newman&amp;#39;s John Rooney, mob boss of a Chicago suburb in the era of Al Capone. When his son Mike witnesses a gangland execution, Sullivan is forced to hit the road with the kid in tow, and soon father and son are bonding over a bank-robbing spree. Despite the pre-release speculation that &lt;em&gt;Perdition&lt;/em&gt; would serve as the vehicle for Tom Hanks&amp;#39; first &amp;quot;bad guy&amp;quot; performance, the star delivers another of his flawed but noble saints. Sure, Michael Sullivan is a killer, but since almost everyone else in the movie is more vicious, and they&amp;#39;re all out to get him, he comes off as a guy who&amp;#39;s just doing what he&amp;#39;s gotta do to protect his son. If you didn’t know Sam Mendes directed this tedious would-be epic, you&amp;#39;d swear it was a movie by master of bloat Frank Darabont. Nearly every scene is leaden, weighed down with portent and production designed to death. Torrents of rain are always pouring from the brims of fedoras while grim-faced men fire tommy guns into other grim-faced men who tumble to their doom in artful slow motion. It’s designed to be Oscar bait, but fortunately no one was biting. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;HOWARD THE DUCK (1986) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CoS7AGxWUAM&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This jaw-dropper, which was proudly emblazoned with the name of George Lucas, and which was the last movie directed by &lt;em&gt;American Graffiti&lt;/em&gt; co-writer Willard Huyck -- he&amp;#39;s still alive, but trust me, he&amp;#39;s never going to direct another one -- belongs to what may well be the most select of all groups, movies that were catastrophic box-office and critical failures that nobody will now argue is actually a misunderstood work of genius. &lt;em&gt;Heaven&amp;#39;s Gate&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Myra Breckinridge&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;At Long Last Love&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Ishtar&lt;/em&gt;, hell, maybe &lt;em&gt;Battlefield Earth &lt;/em&gt;-- each of them has some crackpot out there who&amp;#39;ll keep you up all night explaining what&amp;#39;s really so great about it. Not this thing. It&amp;#39;s not even worth discussing its failure to in any way represent what&amp;#39;s good, or even what sucks, about its alleged source material, an uneven but gorgeously cranky and weird Marvel series that writer Steve Gerber spun off from a supporting character he once threw into a &lt;em&gt;Man-Thing&lt;/em&gt; comic, reportedly just to annoy his bosses. All you can do is stare at&amp;nbsp;the thing&amp;nbsp;and wonder what in God&amp;#39;s sweet name they thought they were doing, until the noise becomes too much and you have to tune out. &lt;em&gt;Howard&lt;/em&gt; was the first Marvel Comics-based movie to make it to theaters, and it is in fact harder to sit through than any number of subsequent Marvel-based projects that went straight to video. The only evidence that the people who made this had any sense at all is that, in the trailer and other publicity materials, they did their damndest to keep prospective ticket-buyers from getting a clear look at the poor bastard in the duck suit. If they&amp;#39;d found a way to keep people watching the movie from getting a clear look at it, they might have&amp;nbsp;made some of their money back. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ELEKTRA (2005) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

But with Garner’s star on the rise, the fetching killer rose from the grave for this 2005 spin-off, a tiresome dud in which we learn that Elektra suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder but doesn’t mind tussling with (and spilling the blood of) yucky villains, is a trained murderer-for-hire who nonetheless has a pesky conscience, and likes to prance about like a runway model when not dispatching superpowered goons. Rob Bowman’s film has no energy or depth but plenty of turgid drama involving Elektra’s grief over her mother’s death and her tutelage under blind mentor Stick (Terence Stamp), unimaginative nonsense that – like the PG-13 ogling of Garner’s buff (but always clothed) body – unfortunately takes precedence over the heroine’s clashes with a group of intriguing baddies like Tattoo, a man whose body art comes to deadly life. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE (1987) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

While many superhero legacies merely drop in quality, becoming disappointments after the first few installments, the Superman movies went from first to worst in the twinkling of an eye, and by the time the fourth installment rolled around, fans were praying for a hailstorm of kryptonite to kill the damn things off for good.&amp;nbsp;When &lt;em&gt;Superman IV&lt;/em&gt; was made, a combination of factors practically ensured it would be a disaster: the non-participation of many of the supporting players, the demands by Christopher Reeve to have more creative input, and the passing of the rights to the franchise from the Salkinds to the deplorable hacks at Golan-Globus. Reeve was given his script input, and the result was a well-meaning pile of shit so rank that he eventually pretended he didn’t have anything to do with it; and while Sidney Furie gets the official blame for directing this incoherent, overlong, and utterly incompetent disaster, most people believe that the real responsibility lies with uberhack/swindler/bad movie mogul Menahem Golan, who apparently spent most of the filming screaming at anyone who bothered to stick around the set. &lt;em&gt;Superman IV: The Quest for Peace&lt;/em&gt; &lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NxLa73N6Rls&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Attacking &lt;em&gt;Catwoman&lt;/em&gt; is almost &lt;em&gt;too&lt;/em&gt; easy: it’s such an obvious, defenseless target, what with&amp;nbsp;stinking up the box office like week-old kitty litter, damaging the careers of all responsible and winning Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Director (for “Pitof,” if that IS your real name) and Worst Actress for Halle Berry (whose Golden Raspberry acceptance speech alone very nearly redeemed both her performance AND her embarrassingly overwrought Oscar speech for &lt;em&gt;Monster’s Ball&lt;/em&gt;,&amp;nbsp;including gems like, “First of all, I want to thank Warner Bros. Thank you for putting me in a piece of shit, God-awful movie . . .it was just what my career needed”). But...nope, we’ll &lt;em&gt;never&lt;/em&gt; be done kicking &lt;em&gt;Catwoman&lt;/em&gt;, for oh, so many reasons. Geeks hated the&amp;nbsp;flick (set in “Lake City” rather than Gotham) for heedlessly violating the sacred mythology of the source material, straight guys hated the way Berry&amp;nbsp;dishonored the legacy of Kitt, Newmar, Meriwether and Pfeiffer by somehow making Catwoman (&lt;em&gt;CATWOMAN!!!!!&lt;/em&gt;) distinctly &lt;em&gt;un&lt;/em&gt;sexy, fashionistas hated the godawful costume, feminists hated the fact that while male superheroes were out saving the world, Berry’s&amp;nbsp;crusader was investigating a frickin’ cosmetics company and right-thinking people everywhere coughed up hairballs of disgust to discover the whole tacky disaster somehow managed to cost 100 million dollars. But even worse is the nagging&amp;nbsp;sense of how totally awesome a &lt;em&gt;good&lt;/em&gt; Catwoman movie&amp;nbsp;might have been...and how we’ll never, ever get to see it now. Thanks a bunch, Pitof. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;FROM HELL (2001)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yw8US3gS37w&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="295"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you think Zack Snyder had a dense, intricate Alan Moore work on his hands when he set about adapting &lt;em&gt;Watchmen&lt;/em&gt;, consider what the Hughes Brothers stepped into when they decided to bring Moore’s graphic novel &lt;em&gt;From Hell&lt;/em&gt; to the screen. A speculative fiction based on the legend of Jack the Ripper, &lt;em&gt;From Hell&lt;/em&gt; is an insanely detailed look at an alternate Victorian England and the massive conspiracy at its heart. It’s endlessly fascinating stuff, and the Hughes Brothers threw away just about all of it in order to make a nonsensical &lt;em&gt;Se7en&lt;/em&gt;-style serial killer bloodbath. Johnny Depp is the police investigator, who is given opium-induced psychic powers here that&amp;nbsp;he never possessed in the comics, while that great British actress Heather Graham plays the cockney prostitute he romances. The entire plot has been re-jiggered into a lame whodunit, thus jettisoning almost every unique aspect of Moore’s take on the Ripper story. It’s not shocking that such minutiae as the extensive tour of London’s Masonic architecture wouldn&amp;#39;t make it to the screen, but keeping the Ripper&amp;#39;s identity a secret throughout the movie only robs the story of its most interesting character. Worst of all, Hughes and Hughes don’t even bother trying to recreate the look of the comic – the whole sooty, early-Industrial vibe. &lt;em&gt;From Hell&lt;/em&gt; looks like it was shot on the set of a Batman movie, which is probably what the brothers would have rather been doing in the first place. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BATMAN AND ROBIN (1997)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/shEWtwFR85Y&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After the departure of Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, Warner Bros. put the Batman franchise in the unsteady, garish hands of director Joel Schumacher, who told everyone within earshot that he wanted to return to the &amp;quot;campy&amp;quot; tone of the old Adam West series, as if daring everyone in earshot to scream at him, &amp;quot;What&amp;#39;re ya, high!?&amp;quot; Schumacher&amp;#39;s first Batman movie, &lt;em&gt;Batman Forever&lt;/em&gt;, which featured Tommy Lee Jones giving a performance that would have embarrassed Rip Taylor and Chris O&amp;#39;Donnell capering in his underoos and declaiming, &amp;quot;Holy twisted metal, Batman!&amp;quot;, was one of the worst big-budget horrors ever, and damned if the old boy didn&amp;#39;t manage to top it in his follow-up. Pre-release word on the movie was terrible, but Schumacher stubbornly continued to talk it up until his megaton bomb hit theater screens, inducing pain and suffering in all who had eyes that see. Schumacher reacted defensively at first -- &amp;quot;I had no idea that putting nipples on the Batsuit and Robin suit were [sic] going to spark international headlines,&amp;quot; he pouted, in stubborn denial of the likelihood that people were trying to be nice and the nipples were the least objectionable thing about his movie. By then it was clear that, in the summer comic-book movie sweepstakes, the Caped Crusader had gotten his nuts crushed by &lt;em&gt;Men in Black&lt;/em&gt;, a movie based on a comic little read by people outside the artist&amp;#39;s and writer&amp;#39;s immediate families. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DAREDEVIL (2003)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

From the cheesy tone, to Johnson’s habit of turning his camera on extreme angles, to the miscasting of Ben Affleck, to the soft-core love scene featuring Daredevil and Jennifer Garner’s sexy assassin Elektra, &lt;em&gt;Daredevil&lt;/em&gt; is a fiasco through and through, turning its hero into a second-rate Batman whose every extraordinary leap, jump and twirl is the byproduct of lame CGI. Johnson shoots every action sequence with maximum spasticity, setting his fights in rain and strobe lights and editing them to ribbons. Stuck headlining this misbegotten adaptation, Affleck vainly attempts to act tortured by flashing a variety of grimaces, all while an overacting Colin Farrell attempts to devour any scenery in sight as the hysterically corny villain Bullseye. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE SPIRIT (2008) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Miller himself is one of the greatest comic artists and writers the industry has ever seen; though his work has been spotty in recent years, in the 1980s, he put out a fistful of some of the greatest superhero stories in the history of the medium. As a director, though, he’s a hell of a banjo player. Utilizing the same tricks he relied on in &lt;em&gt;Sin City&lt;/em&gt;, but with a notably weaker cast and a downright rotten script, he took the Spirit – a venerable crimefighting character created by the beloved Will Eisner – and stuck him in a movie that would have to be twice as good as it is to be an embarrassment. Sidled with an incoherent screenplay, a tone-deaf sense of mood and pacing, a lot of wasted femmes fatale, and Samuel Jackson in one of the most deranged (and not in a good way) villain roles in recent memory, &lt;em&gt;The Spirit&lt;/em&gt; would have been a disaster regardless, but the final nail in the coffin was the casting of charisma-free nobody Gabriel Macht in the lead role. Macht brought a Twinkie-heavy sense of anti-gravity to the Spirit the likes of which we haven’t seen since a young fellow named Klinton Spilsbury donned the mask of the Lone Ranger in his first, and last, motion picture role. And don’t think the studios don’t know it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;DVD of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; The cream of this week’s DVD releases looks to be the snazzy new Criterion edition of Gregory Nava’s breakthrough film &lt;i&gt;El Norte&lt;/i&gt;. This lovely mini-epic about a pair of Guatemalan refugees venturing north to America, Nava’s film told a too-common story that hadn’t been successfully dramatized in movies before. Shooting the film largely on the fly, Nava and his wife/collaborator Anna Thomas helped to kick-start the American independent film movement by redefining the sorts of movies could be made with limited means. Both the standard edition and the Blu-Ray edition include a new commentary track by Nava, interviews with Nava, Thomas, and the film’s principal actors, Nava’s 1972 student film &lt;i&gt;The Journal of Diego Rodriguez Silva&lt;/i&gt;, and more. At a time when “Sundance movies” have practically become a formula unto themselves, &lt;i&gt;El Norte&lt;/i&gt; is a reminder that independent film can be more than just a cliché.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also this week in classics is Criterion’s standard-format edition of Douglas Sirk’s &lt;i&gt;Magnificent Obsession&lt;/i&gt;, which also includes a remastered version of the 1935 John M. Stahl original. Or if you like your weepies more contemporary, there’s always &lt;i&gt;The Notebook&lt;/i&gt; Limited Edition Gift Set (Warner, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s slate of recent releases coming to DVD is headlined &lt;i&gt;Saw V&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate, also Blu-Ray), the latest entry in a series that will surely continue as long as there are people willing to come up with convoluted ways to kill off characters. Also this week: Mark Wahlberg in the video game adaptation &lt;i&gt;Max Payne&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray), the story of Heisman winner Ernie Davis in &lt;i&gt;The Express&lt;/i&gt; (Universal, also Blu-Ray), the family films &lt;i&gt;Igor&lt;/i&gt; (MGM, also Blu-Ray) and &lt;i&gt;City of Ember&lt;/i&gt; (Fox), Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in the “a white man shall free them” drama &lt;i&gt;The Children of Huang Shi&lt;/i&gt; (Sony), the cult-ready musical gorefest &lt;i&gt;Repo!: The Genetic Opera&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate, also Blu-Ray), and the direct-to-DVD horror movie &lt;i&gt;Amusement&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In TV on DVD, this week brings &lt;i&gt;The Rockford Files&lt;/i&gt; Season 6 (Universal), &lt;i&gt;Emergency!&lt;/i&gt; Season 5 (Universal), and &lt;i&gt;Moonlight&lt;/i&gt;: The Complete Series (Warner).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, this week’s Blu-Ray only titles is highlighted by the enduring classic &lt;i&gt;This Is Spinal Tap&lt;/i&gt; (MGM), in an edition that boasts all of the extras from MGM’s standard-format edition. what some regarded as an overenthusiastic introduction&lt;/a&gt; to actress Jennifer Garner at last month&amp;#39;s Academy Awards, an event that &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/02/25/gary-busey-attempts-to-make-out-with-jennifer-garner-in-public.aspx"&gt;we personally will never be able to link to enough times.&lt;/a&gt; Busey, who was himself nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1978 &lt;i&gt;The Buddy Holly Story&lt;/i&gt; (and who, more recently, won the Best Supporting Actor prize at the 2003 DVD Premiere Awards for his work in &lt;i&gt;Slap Shot 2: Breaking the Ice&lt;/i&gt;, repeatedly interrupted Ryan Seacrest while Seacrest was conducting interviews on the red carpet for the E! channel, then compounded the offense by giving Laura Linney a peck on the cheek and attempting to climb Garner so that he could nap in her coiffure.  In an e-mail released by his clean-up crew, Busey said that he &amp;quot;meant no disrespect to Ms. Jennifer Garner when I met her at the Oscars and apologize if I made her uncomfortable.&amp;quot; He added that he hadn&amp;#39;t realized at first that there was an interview going on and that he then started to withdraw but, &amp;quot;suddenly Ryan introduced her to me.&amp;quot; For the record, we love Gary Busey and heartily endorse his tactic of shifting blame to Ryan Seacrest, so much so that we plan to use it the next time we fall behind in our student loan payments or forget not to look directly at the bank&amp;#39;s security camera. We’ve seen writer-directors and even writer-director-actors before, but it may be time to add a new hyphenate to the filmmaking glossary: writer-director-actor-blogger.  Ricky Gervais is sharing the writing and directing duties on his debut feature film &lt;i&gt;This Side of the Truth&lt;/i&gt;, and his co-stars include Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, Jeffrey Tambor, Rob Lowe and Jennifer Garner.  But he’s handling the blogging himself at his own website, &lt;a href="http://www.rickygervais.com/thissideofthetruth.php" target="_blank"&gt;rickygervais.com&lt;/a&gt;.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Plotwise, the movie sounds rather high concept in comparison to Gervais’s brilliantly squirmy television work in &lt;i&gt;The Office &lt;/i&gt;and &lt;i&gt;Extras&lt;/i&gt;.  “It&amp;#39;s a contemporary world rather like our own, but in which the human race has never evolved the ability to lie,” blogs Gervais. “I play a loser who discovers one day that he, and only he has the ability to lie. In a world where no one even understands the concept of lying, everyone totally believes, without question anything I tell them. I can say anything at all and they accept this as the gospel truth. I can get anything I want. Or can I?”

Gervais has already posted a number of pre-production videos, including his close inspection of the detailed testicle work on a scale model boar, and he offers a preview of a future project: “In the film I&amp;#39;m writing with Steve Merchant I&amp;#39;m playing a man with a bad back who sits in an arm chair all day. If I can hide a toilet in the armchair I will have created the perfect acting job for myself.”

And while Marvel reigned supreme at the comics shop, the company dearly wanted to break into the lucrative and ego-stroking business of licensing it characters for major motion pictures, and it was there that DC pantsed Marvel and took its lunch money. While DC was the home of Superman and Batman, Marvel was the home base of Howard the Duck. For years, Marvel&amp;#39;s role in the Hollywood fod chain was epitomized by the &lt;a href="http://www.teako170.com/ffmovie.html"&gt;1994 Fantastic Four movie&lt;/a&gt;, a cheesy, cheap-looking affair that Marvel put into production without bothering to inform the people who worked on it that they had no intention of releasing it to theaters or even home video but were contractually obliged to make &lt;i&gt;something&lt;/i&gt; if they wanted to hang onto the film rights to their own characters. All that started to change in 2000 with Bryan Singer&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;X-Men&lt;/i&gt;, whose success the director was unable to duplicate with his later stab at rebooting Superman. A couple of years later, Sam Raimi&amp;#39;s take on the Marvel flagship hero Spider-Man launched a major franchise and proved that Marvel could sire a blockbuster movie without Singer or Hugh Jackman modeling a haircut that could open bottles and cans. Since then, Marvel has had varying degrees of commercial success with a for-real Fantastic Four movie and its sequel, as well as &lt;i&gt;Ghost Rider, Daredevil&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Elektra&lt;/i&gt;, a bust in theaters but more of an earner as a DVD release that allowed film connoisseurs to conduct a close study of Jennifer Garner&amp;#39;s moist eyes and washboard abs in the tranquil setting of their own fortress of solitude. Even &lt;i&gt;The Punisher&lt;/i&gt; managed to make it into theaters with John Travolta on the poster, which helps to set it apart from the 1989 straight-to-video version, with Dolph Lundgren grunting his lines as if his tight skull-face T-shirt were cutting off his circulation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/03/08-15/340px-Ffmovie1994.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/03/08-15/340px-Ffmovie1994.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Stage two in Marvel&amp;#39;s renewed campaign to take over the film industry goes into effect on May 2 when &lt;i&gt;Iron Man&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-ca-marvel9mar09,1,5767526.story"&gt;the first official production of Marvel Studios&lt;/a&gt;, is released to theaters. As reporter Geoff Boucher puts it, this marks &amp;quot;the first step in the company&amp;#39;s quest to go from intellectual-property fount to a stand-alone Hollywood player that can greenlight big-time popcorn movies.&amp;quot; Studio chairman David Maisel crows that &amp;quot;We&amp;#39;re the first since DreamWorks started 14 years ago that can greenlight its own $100 million movies. It doesn&amp;#39;t happen very often.&amp;quot; In some ways, Marvel might still look pretty small to the big guys: the &amp;quot;studio&amp;quot; is modestly staffed and will rely mostly on Paramount to distribute their finished films. What they do have is the backlist of established characters, many of them created back in the golden days when the legendary Stan Lee and the uber-legendary Jack Kirby were striking sparks together, despite Marvel founder-publisher Martin Goodman&amp;#39;s attempts to rein in his brainstorming boys by reminding them that their reading base consisted of &amp;quot;children and a few illiterate adults.&amp;quot; (Boy, the more things change, the more things stay the same, huh?) As Maisel puts it, &amp;quot;We&amp;#39;re not in the movie business, we&amp;#39;re in the &lt;i&gt;Iron Man&lt;/i&gt; business right now. Marvel owns the intellectual property. We have an Iron Man video game coming, the toys, the comics, we have an animated television show coming, a direct-to-DVD animated Iron Man movie last year. We&amp;#39;re going to have an Iron Man ride at an amusement park in Dubai in a few years.&amp;quot; They&amp;#39;re also in the &lt;i&gt;Ant-Man&lt;/i&gt; business--Edgar Wright, the director of &lt;i&gt;Shaun of the Dead&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Hot Fuzz&lt;/i&gt;, is said to be ready to direct a film about the wee fellow--and of course, they&amp;#39;re still in the &lt;i&gt;Spider-Man&lt;/i&gt; business, with plans by Julie Taymor (&lt;i&gt;Across the Universe&lt;/i&gt;) to launch a Spider-Man musical on Broadway. What may be most impressive is that they&amp;#39;re in the Hulk business, too. Ang Lee&amp;#39;s 2003 &lt;i&gt;The Hulk&lt;/i&gt; movie was perhaps the highest-profile misstep of the new Marvel movie era, an ambitious, poker-faced effort that confused critics and disappointed audiences, though it did have the dignity of being a flop of the misguided-art-house variety instead of the underfunded direct-to-video sort. Now, just five years later, Marvel is going to reboot &lt;i&gt;The Hulk&lt;/i&gt; with Ed Norton in the lead. The fact that Marvel is taking a second crack at the &amp;quot;property&amp;quot; so soon after the release of a film whose reception might have encouraged lesser mortals to sweep the Hulk under the rug for a generation or three shows an impressive degree of faith in their own product. Can another run at Howard the Duck be far behind? Don&amp;#39;t get us wrong: an Oscar win has a lot to recommend it. It bestows upon the recipient not just bragging rights but a new, higher pay ceiling and, if he doesn&amp;#39;t screw it up the way Kevin Spacey did, a privileged glow and a long-term shot at juicier roles. But as anyone who&amp;#39;s spent ten minutes reading about Cary Grant or Alfred Hitchcock knows, there&amp;#39;s nothing that sets a major Hollywood figure apart like never having won an Oscar — that is, a &lt;em&gt;real&lt;/em&gt; Oscar, and none of that special lifetime career achievement bullshit. Then, every time someone writes a profile of you, they can set aside a moment to tear their hair out over the fact that you never got the big prize — and everyone, including the people who&amp;#39;d never given it a second&amp;#39;s thought before, will automatically do you the honor of agreeing that, yes, it is a shocking thing now that you mention it. In recent years, the sudden realization that Paul Newman and Martin Scorsese, to name two examples, had never won Oscars set off palpitations in the entertainment media, and cries went out urging the Academy to do the right thing, to make sure that they did not go to their graves un-Oscared, even if it meant honoring, by association, such lesser works as &lt;em&gt;The Color of Money&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;The Departed&lt;/em&gt;. It&amp;#39;s hard not to feel that, by finally joining what sometimes seems to be the majority, these men lost a little something that had previously set them apart from the likes of Red Buttons, Cliff Robertson, Roberto Begnini. One would think that Scorsese, with his ravenous enthusiasm for obscure and neglected filmmakers whose posthumous reputations glow with the luster one associates with misunderstood genius, would get this as much as anyone, but the lure of the little gold statuette is a powerful one. Let&amp;#39;s take a moment to honor some of the people who will have to content themselves with asking Marty how it feels to hold one. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BEST ACTOR:&lt;/strong&gt; Except for Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortensen, all the nominees here are already lost souls, with Oscars already stashed in the broom closet. Still, George Clooney and Tommy Lee Jones have only won for Best Supporting Actor in the past, so I&amp;#39;m sure it would feel a &lt;em&gt;little&lt;/em&gt; special if they were able to corral one for being top banana. (Jones&amp;#39;s nomination is also notable for being the only direct evidence included in the list of nominations that there was something this past year called &amp;quot;movies about the Iraq war.&amp;quot;) Notable among the missing: Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey, Jr. of &lt;em&gt;Zodiac&lt;/em&gt;, two very fine performances that could just as easily have been shoehorned into the Supporting Actor category, but which had the misfortune to have been included in a movie that really took it on the chin for having been released early in the year. (The Academy has traditionally favored movies that were released late in the year and so were fresh in the minds of voters, a tradition that the development of home video has done surprisingly little to reverse.) The Academy did reach back to movies released in the first half of 2007 in order to bestow a Best Actress nomination on Julie Christie for her work in &lt;em&gt;Away from Her&lt;/em&gt;, but Gordon Pinsent, who had to carry that picture, and whose performance was equally fine, was slighted, which may have something to do with the fact that no Academy voters have fond memories of having used a picture of him torn from the pages of &lt;em&gt;Vogue&lt;/em&gt; to help them get through puberty thirty years ago. Similarly, Will Smith&amp;#39;s performance in &lt;em&gt;I Am Legend&lt;/em&gt;, a movie that he was obliged to keep alive single-handedly for long stretches, was in its way every bit as impressive a feat of movie-star acting as Clooney&amp;#39;s glamorously world-weary turn in &lt;em&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;/em&gt;, but he was in a movie about fighting rabid vampires, whereas Clooney was in one about reaching deep down into the pit of one&amp;#39;s soul and learning to say no to the forces of evil, represented by a bunch of lawyers who could easily be taken for rabid vampires if you squint. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BEST ACTRESS:&lt;/strong&gt; It&amp;#39;s really no surprise that one of the most remarkable performances seen this year, that of Molly Shannon in &lt;em&gt;Year of the Dog&lt;/em&gt;, isn&amp;#39;t here: the movie was, again, released a very long time ago, it wasn&amp;#39;t a hit, and in the ranks of people remembered for having been on &lt;em&gt;Saturday Night Live&lt;/em&gt;, Shannon is probably closer to Chris Farley&amp;#39;s side of the scale than Bill Murray&amp;#39;s in the public mind. That could change if she gives many more performances like this one, but God knows where she&amp;#39;s going to find the roles. It&amp;#39;s a bit more surprising that Angelina Jolie&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;A Mighty Heart&lt;/em&gt; has sunk without a trace; it&amp;#39;s not the best performance of the year, nor is it Jolie&amp;#39;s best performance, but in a year that, as usual, was not overflowing with instances of women being given the chance to strut their stuff in big, juicy parts, you might think that Jolie&amp;#39;s lending whatever muscle she has a movie star to telling the story of Daniel Pearl&amp;#39;s widow would get her a token nod. Maybe all the factors that it had going against it — released in the summer, box-office failure, heavy subject matter, plus the mixed feelings that so many people seem to have about Jolie (&lt;em&gt;is&lt;/em&gt; she a star, or a tabloid freak?) created a kind of perfect storm. Ashley Judd&amp;#39;s wild-eyed, insane sexy mama in the off-Broadway sort-of-horror picture &lt;em&gt;Bug&lt;/em&gt; was something to see. I don&amp;#39;t know if the studio even bothered to send out screener copies to Academy voters, though if they were on the fence about it, I&amp;#39;d have chipped in for the cost of the postage, just so I could fantasize about how many of them would end up calling in priests to exorcise their DVD players. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:&lt;/strong&gt; Chris Cooper punted two good shots the Academy&amp;#39;s way, first with his creepy performance as treasonous spook Robert Hanssen in &lt;em&gt;Breach&lt;/em&gt;, then with an excellent demonstration of the character actor functioning as secret star in the big action flick &lt;em&gt;The Kingdom&lt;/em&gt;, but the Academy passed on both. Steve Zahn was amazing and heartbreaking as a doomed P.O.W. in Werner Herzog&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Rescue Dawn&lt;/em&gt;; he didn&amp;#39;t get nominated either, but just last week he was amazing again, effortlessly channeling Robert Duvall as the young Gus McCrae in the &lt;em&gt;Lonesome Dove&lt;/em&gt; prequel, so maybe the Emmys will make it up to him later. Jeff Daniels&amp;#39; straight-talking blind man in &lt;em&gt;The Lookout&lt;/em&gt; deserved more attention than it got, and Clarence Williams III made a solid meal of about two (uncredited) scenes as Bumpy Johnson in &lt;em&gt;American Gangster&lt;/em&gt;. (Ruby Dee did get nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing Denzel Washington&amp;#39;s mother in that movie. Her performance isn&amp;#39;t nearly as rich as Williams&amp;#39;, but she&amp;#39;s certainly due for a little attention, and maybe the Academy figured, regarding her and Williams, that it was either one or the other.) The funny thing is that the category is padded out with people — Casey Affleck, Javier Bardem — who got enough screen time in their movies to qualify as lead actors. Bardem&amp;#39;s Supporting Actor status feels like it&amp;#39;s rigged to make it easier for him to claim the award, though I&amp;#39;d look for a late surge to form behind Hal Holbrook after people realize that he&amp;#39;s not only nominated but actually still alive and capable of being cheered by a win. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:&lt;/strong&gt; I don&amp;#39;t get the universal consensus that Cate Blanchett was a supporting actress in &lt;em&gt;I&amp;#39;m Not There&lt;/em&gt;. I guess that, again, it comes down to amount of screen time, but nobody else in that movie had any &lt;em&gt;more&lt;/em&gt; screen time than she did; certainly nobody else put theirs to as good a use. I probably wouldn&amp;#39;t mind so much except that, by shoving her into this category for her phenomenal performance, it feels as if the Academy is shafting Amy Ryan, nominated for a hair-raisingly skanky performance as a bad mother for the ages in &lt;em&gt;Gone Baby Gone&lt;/em&gt;, and Tilda Swinton, whose completely reprehensible and yet completely understandable corporate villain gave &lt;em&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;/em&gt; a surprising amount of its soul. A little tinkering might have left room for Marisa Tomei, who in &lt;em&gt;Before the Devil Knows You&amp;#39;re Dead&lt;/em&gt; made Philip Seymour Hoffman&amp;#39;s faithless wife convincingly empty and slow-witted and shallow in her dissatisfaction with her existence, yet still made her seem very much worth screwing up your life over. This would have also been the place to honor little Nina Kervel-Bey, who made one of the year&amp;#39;s most remarkable debuts in the French film &lt;em&gt;Blame It on Fidel&lt;/em&gt;. She&amp;#39;s actually the star of the movie, but from Tatum O&amp;#39;Neal to Abigail Breslin, the Academy has traditionally shoved little girls into the Best Supporting Actress category, as if &amp;quot;supporting&amp;quot; were synonymous with &amp;quot;short.&amp;quot; Appearances to the contrary, Ellen Page turns twenty-one next month, so her nomination in the Best Actress category (for &lt;em&gt;Juno&lt;/em&gt;) does not break this trend. It would have been nice, though, if Page&amp;#39;s co-star Jennifer Garner could have been sandwiched in here. In &lt;em&gt;The Kingdom&lt;/em&gt;, Garner is still trying to prove herself as an action heroine, with mixed results, but she gave the performance of her career so far in &lt;em&gt;Juno&lt;/em&gt; — a carefully nuanced performance and a brave one, one that depended for its (and the movie&amp;#39;s) full effectiveness on the actress&amp;#39;s willingness to slowly open up to the audience and reveal what&amp;#39;s on the inside of a woman who has the shell of a frosty yuppie robot. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BEST DIRECTOR:&lt;/strong&gt; The fun in this category has usually been in thinking about how it feels to be the one director who wasn&amp;#39;t nominated even though his movie &lt;em&gt;was&lt;/em&gt; nominated as Best Picture. However he may laugh it off in public, you know that the message he thinks he&amp;#39;s getting is, &amp;quot;And last but not least, nominated for Best Picture &lt;em&gt;in spite of&lt;/em&gt; having been directed by...&amp;quot; This year it is the director of &lt;em&gt;Atonement&lt;/em&gt;, the esteemed young filmmaker what&amp;#39;s-his-name, who has to wonder if everybody thinks the actors built the sets while he was in the bathroom and came up with their blocking while he was at lunch. Suffice to say that Julian Schnabel, the director of &lt;em&gt;The Diving Bell and the Butterfly&lt;/em&gt;, fills out the category just fine, though it might be even finer if, say, Jason Reitman had somehow been overlooked in favor of &lt;em&gt;Zodiac&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#39;s David Fincher. Another surprisingly plausible contender might have been Ben Affleck, who sure did a hell of a lot better job behind the camera on &lt;em&gt;Gone Baby Gone&lt;/em&gt; than he&amp;#39;s ever done in front of it. Affleck may not have the face of a director — that&amp;#39;s a compliment, Ben — but I&amp;#39;m in favor of anything that encourages him to stay back there. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;img it&amp;#39;s always been. Perhaps even more so — not only are many Oscar races still wide-open, but the status of the ceremony itself is up in the air. But for now the show is still happening, which means the nominations are set to be announced tomorrow morning. Here are my hasty, shot-in-the-dark predictions in the top six categories: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Best Picture:&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/no_country_for_old_men.poster.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/no_country_for_old_men.poster.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Diving Bell and the Butterfly&lt;br /&gt;Into the Wild&lt;br /&gt;Juno&lt;br /&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;br /&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think we can all agree that &lt;i&gt;No Country&lt;/i&gt; is in, right? Beyond that, it&amp;#39;s something of a crap shoot. &lt;i&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;/i&gt; is the kind of classy star vehicle the Academy usually responds to, and audience favorite &lt;i&gt;Juno&lt;/i&gt; has become too big a word of mouth phenomenon to ignore. At one point, &lt;i&gt;Atonement&lt;/i&gt; was looking like a front-runner for the win, but its Oscar buzz has subsided. On the other side of the coin, &lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt; may be too bleak for the voters to embrace — it would have a better chance were it the year&amp;#39;s undisputed critical champ, but with &lt;i&gt;No Country&lt;/i&gt; in the mix, PTA&amp;#39;s masterpiece could be shut out here. Instead, I&amp;#39;m predicting &lt;i&gt;The Diving Bell and the Butterfly&lt;/i&gt;, an acclaimed true-life story that&amp;#39;s only gaining momentum, and &lt;i&gt;Into the Wild&lt;/i&gt;, the year&amp;#39;s most Oscar-baity film directed by a respected actor, which is something that tends to go over well with the actor-filled Academy membership. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Best Actor:&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Daniel-Day-Lewis-ThereW.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Daniel-Day-Lewis-ThereW.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;George Clooney, &lt;i&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Daniel Day-Lewis, &lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Johnny Depp, &lt;i&gt;Sweeney Todd&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Emile Hirsch, &lt;i&gt;Into the Wild&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Viggo Mortensen, &lt;i&gt;Eastern Promises&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even if the Academy decides to overlook &lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt;, they won&amp;#39;t be able to deny the awesomeness of Day-Lewis&amp;#39; blazing performance as Plainview. Likewise, Clooney and Depp have recently become Academy favorites, and I dare say that had &lt;i&gt;Sweeney Todd&lt;/i&gt; done more business Depp would&amp;#39;ve been the one to beat here. Hirsch is a bit iffier here given his age, but he carries &lt;em&gt;Into the Wild &lt;/em&gt;on his capable shoulde&lt;em&gt;rs&lt;/em&gt;, and if the film gets nominated I&amp;#39;m guessing he will be too. With the recent groundswell for &lt;i&gt;The Diving Bell and the Butterfly&lt;/i&gt;, I think Matthieu Amalric should be seen as a contender here, although not nearly as much as if he was an American star. Instead, I&amp;#39;m going with Mortensen — &lt;i&gt;Eastern Promises&lt;/i&gt; didn&amp;#39;t exactly set the world on fire, but his performance was the highlight, and I think voters will take the opportunity to honor him not only for this role but also for his overlooked turns in &lt;i&gt;A History of Violence&lt;/i&gt; and the &lt;i&gt;Lord of the Rings&lt;/i&gt; trilogy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Best Actress:&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/away-from-her-julie-christie-200.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/away-from-her-julie-christie-200.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Amy Adams, &lt;i&gt;Enchanted&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Julie Christie, &lt;i&gt;Away From Her&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Marion Cotillard, &lt;i&gt;La Vie en Rose&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Angelina Jolie, &lt;i&gt;A Mighty Heart&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ellen Page, &lt;i&gt;Juno&lt;/i&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Throughout this awards season, three names kept popping up in this rare — Christie, Cotillard, and Page. So it&amp;#39;s pretty safe to assume they&amp;#39;ll make it in. That leaves us two spots in a relatively weak year for buzzed-about performances (sadly, &lt;i&gt;Black Book&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s Carice Van Houten has no traction whatsoever). With very little competition, Jolie should make the cut — the film didn&amp;#39;t make much of a dent, but her stardom has kept her in the race. The final spot is anyone&amp;#39;s guess. High-profile star turns (Jodie Foster in &lt;i&gt;The Brave One&lt;/i&gt;, Cate Blanchett in &lt;i&gt;Elizabeth: The Golden Age&lt;/i&gt;) have flopped at the box office, while respected performers in independent films (notably Laura Linney in &lt;i&gt;The Savages&lt;/i&gt;) have been lost in the year-end shuffle. That leaves Amy Adams in &lt;i&gt;Enchanted&lt;/i&gt;, a star-making performance by a previous nominee in a hit movie that&amp;#39;s still fresh in people&amp;#39;s minds. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Best Director:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Schnabel.jpg"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Schnabel.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Schnabel.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paul Thomas Anderson, &lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joel and Ethan Coen, &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tony Gilroy, &lt;i&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sean Penn, &lt;i&gt;Into the Wild&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Julian Schnabel, &lt;i&gt;The Diving Bell and the Butterfly&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At this point, Best Director is the Coens&amp;#39; to lose. Even if someone else takes home Best Picture, I think it&amp;#39;s still their year in this category. I also think the Directors Branch will be impressed by Sean Penn&amp;#39;s metamorphosis into serious filmmaker, as well as Schnabel&amp;#39;s unconventional, inspired filmmaking choices in &lt;i&gt;Diving Bell&lt;/i&gt;. For this year&amp;#39;s semi-obligatory non-Best Picture-nominated director, I&amp;#39;m predicting Anderson, a respected maverick whose filmmaking chops in &lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt; are undeniable even if the film itself is too much for some audiences. Of the two remaining Best Picture nominees, I think Gilroy has the edge over &lt;i&gt;Juno&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s Jason Reitman for two reasons: (1) crowd-pleasing comedies tend to get shut out of this category, and (2) Gilroy is a veteran screenwriter makes an impressive directorial debut. But don&amp;#39;t be surprised if another &amp;quot;lone director&amp;quot; — say, Sidney Lumet for &lt;i&gt;Before the Devil Knows You&amp;#39;re Dead&lt;/i&gt;, or Tim Burton for &lt;i&gt;Sweeney Todd&lt;/i&gt; — gets the nod instead. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Best Supporting Actor:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bardem%20no%20country.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bardem%20no%20country.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Javier Bardem, &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Philip Seymour Hoffman, &lt;i&gt;Charlie Wilson&amp;#39;s War&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hal Holbrook, &lt;i&gt;Into the Wild&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tommy Lee Jones, &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tom Wilkinson, &lt;i&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;/i&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;In a year without Bardem, this race might have come down to Grand Old Actor Holbrook vs. veteran character actor Wilkinson. But Bardem casts a long shadow over this category, with Chigurh the creepiest villain in an Oscar-feted film since Hannibal Lecter. &lt;i&gt;Charlie Wilson&amp;#39;s War&lt;/i&gt; wasn&amp;#39;t the Oscar juggernaut that it was predicted to be, but I still think Hoffman&amp;#39;s scene-stealing turn will make it in. I think this year&amp;#39;s biggest surprise will be the absence of Casey Affleck&amp;#39;s performance in &lt;i&gt;The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford&lt;/i&gt;. Affleck&amp;#39;s the only serious competition Bardem has had among the precursor awards, but &lt;i&gt;Jesse James&lt;/i&gt; was a box-office flop and Affleck&amp;#39;s performance could give voters the willies. Max Von Sydow&amp;#39;s affecting turn in &lt;i&gt;The Diving Bell and the Butterfly&lt;/i&gt; might have had a chance here — as a means of honoring&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt; one of the world&amp;#39;s most esteemed actors and, by extension, his recently-departed longtime collaborator Ingmar Bergman — except that he might not have enough screentime to be a contender. Instead, I&amp;#39;m giving the edge to Jones, an Academy favorite who came roaring back this year to give two acclaimed performances after a decade&amp;#39;s worth of commercial crap. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Best Supporting Actress:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/cate_blanchett%20as%20dylan.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/cate_blanchett%20as%20dylan.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cate Blanchett, &lt;i&gt;I&amp;#39;m Not There&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Catherine Keener, &lt;i&gt;Into the Wild&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kelly MacDonald, &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Amy Ryan, &lt;i&gt;Gone Baby Gone&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tilda Swinton, &lt;i&gt;Michael Clayton&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once again, three names keep popping up in this category: Blanchett, Ryan, and Swinton. I think they&amp;#39;ll all get nominated, though who will win remains to be seen (early shot-in-the-dark prediction: a Swinton upset). The other two spots are less certain. But consider that, more than any other category, the Best Supporting Actress nominees are largely composed of performers who starred opposite other Oscar nominees. In this respect, I think contenders such as Ruby Dee in &lt;i&gt;American Gangster&lt;/i&gt;, Marisa Tomei in &lt;i&gt;Before the Devil Knows You&amp;#39;re Dead&lt;/i&gt;, and especially Saoirse Ronan in &lt;i&gt;Atonement&lt;/i&gt;, are at a disadvantage here. Instead, I&amp;#39;m predicting the fourth spot to go to Catherine Keener, getting her third nomination in this category for her moving turn in &lt;i&gt;Into the Wild&lt;/i&gt;. The final slot comes down to Jennifer Garner in &lt;i&gt;Juno&lt;/i&gt; and Kelly MacDonald in &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt;. Despite Garner&amp;#39;s greater name recognition, I&amp;#39;m giving the edge to MacDonald, both for No Country&amp;#39;s frontrunner status and for playing one of Oscar&amp;#39;s favorite characters, the supportive, long-suffering wife. But honestly, it could go either way. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Watch for the Oscar nominations tomorrow, January 22. Joe&lt;/i&gt;, since it is set to release on his 40th birthday, and he is anxious to learn whether going to see it will constitute a celebration or a punishment.)&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;So, &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117978532.html?categoryid=13&amp;amp;cs=1"&gt;based on what we know so far&lt;/a&gt;, how bad is it likely to be? &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;ONLY SORT OF BAD:&lt;/b&gt; The screenplay is being written by Stuart Beattie, who has done acceptable blockbuster work in the &lt;i&gt;Pirates of the Caribbean &lt;/i&gt;series and in &lt;i&gt;30 Days of Night&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;PRETTY BAD:&amp;nbsp;&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;A previous version of the script was written by the man responsible for &lt;i&gt;Swordfish&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;BAD:&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;The director is Stephen Sommers, who brought us all three &lt;i&gt;Mummy&lt;/i&gt; films and &lt;i&gt;Van Helsing.&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;And &lt;i&gt;Van Helsing&lt;/i&gt; was really, really bad. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;QUITE BAD:&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;Sienna Miller, who is not nearly as good an actress as Sienna Miller thinks she is, is involved.
