Gwynneth Paltrow &lt;a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1606970/20090313/story.jhtml"&gt;has weighed in on her &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt; co-star Joaquin Phoenix and his abandonment of acting&lt;/a&gt; to pursue a rap career. (Last week, Phoenix made headlines by performing at a Miami club, where he went berserk and dove into a jeering crowd; security guards jumped in after him to protect the hecklers from the star, or maybe to protect the star from his own worst impulses. The South Florida &lt;i&gt;Sun-Sentinel&lt;/i&gt; has &lt;a href="http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/miami/sfl-joaquin-phoenix-video-attack,0,1275610.story?track=rss"&gt;video of the fracas here&lt;/a&gt;--and if you click now, you can also find out what Yanni&amp;#39;s up to these days!) Asked by a reporter for MTV UK if she believes that Phoenix has really bolted movies for good, Paltrow replied, &amp;quot;I&amp;#39;m not a hundred percent sure that that&amp;#39;s really going to be the case. I think that there might be some other explanation or something going on. I&amp;#39;m not quite sure what, but I can&amp;#39;t believe that he&amp;#39;s really going to quit forever to become a rapper. It seems odd.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; You can actually hear her say this in her own distinctive Gwynnethian tones in the clip above, but for some reason the on-line video cuts out before Paltrow really surpassed herself in the interview. Asked if she had any advice to offer the new Joaquin, the thoughtful actress pondered on it and replied, &amp;quot;Hmm ... maybe to go live in the projects for a few years to get some authenticity, maybe.&amp;quot; (Upon hearing this, Phoenix ran to get a paper to check the classified to see if Florida or Willona might be advertising for boarders.) Thus does Gwynneth Paltrow come from way, way behind to best our longtime frontrunner, Mickey Rourke in The Screengrab S/He Didn&amp;#39;t Really Say That, Did S/He? Sweepstakes. As Joaquin&amp;#39;s new neighbors might put it, Dy-no-mite!

As Phil Nugent reported here &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2009/02/24/new-yorker-films-shuts-its-doors-back-catalog-of-foreign-indie-classics-to-be-auctioned-off.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;earlier this week&lt;/a&gt;, the venerable New Yorker Films “has ceased operations” and its catalogue of foreign and art house fare is set for auction.  At &lt;a href="http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/btm/feature/2009/02/24/new_yorker/index.html" target="_blank"&gt;Beyond the Multiplex&lt;/a&gt;, Andrew O’Hehir speculates about a potential landing spot for the treasure trove of classic films.  “In a broader sense, New Yorker&amp;#39;s long-term willingness to defy the marketplace realities of American film distribution never seemed like a sustainable business model. While the films listed above attracted at least some American viewers, New Yorker was worshiped in cinephile circles precisely because it often took on difficult and adventurous cinema that was destined to find almost no audience. Sometimes Talbot and Lopez seemed to be running an educational foundation under the guise of a for-profit business….New Yorker&amp;#39;s library would have obvious appeal to &amp;quot;an online distributor, a TV network or a DVD company,&amp;quot; Werner continues. Given that IFC is at least two and potentially all three of those things, and in recent years has assumed a commanding position in the distribution of foreign-language and American independent films, it might be the most logical potential bidder.”

At &lt;a href="http://somecamerunning.typepad.com/some_came_running/2009/02/dodge-challengers-and-m%C3%B6bius-strips-director-richard-c-sarafian-on-vanishing-point.html" target="_blank"&gt;Some Came Running&lt;/a&gt;, Glen Kenny celebrates a new DVD release of &lt;i&gt;Vanishing Point&lt;/i&gt; (which includes the UK version of the picture, containing an excised scene with Charlotte Rampling) by interviewing director Richard Sarafian.  “At first I balked at Barry Newman being the star, ‘cause I had other possibilities and I felt…all I wanted was the adult male that looked like he belonged behind the wheel.  And I had several major actors in mind that might have made a difference.  It didn&amp;#39;t turn out that way. It came back to me that either I use Barry Newman or Zanuck wasn&amp;#39;t going to make the picture.  I said, ‘Well, Mr. Zanuck, I&amp;#39;m going to make the car the star.’  And he said, ‘I knew you&amp;#39;d see it my way.’”

Spoutblog&lt;/a&gt;’s Karina Longworth revisits Eagle Pennell&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Whole Shootin’ Match&lt;/i&gt;.  “It’s possible that this is just that time of year and I have SXSW on the brain, but when I watched &lt;i&gt;The Whole Shootin’ Matc&lt;/i&gt;h a few days ago, more than seeing the film as a love/hate letter to the bottle, more than spotting its shared DNA with various films by Richard Linklater and Andrew Bujalski (and, to a lesser extent, Wes Anderson and Gus Van Sant), I saw it as a catalyst for a conversation about Austin’s evolving film cultural history…What interests me most about the ‘regional’ issue is that although Austin has become a place where independent filmmakers from all over the country — including LA and New York — come to show work, ironically, Austin’s past and present identity as a film town often gets lost in that process and excluded from the conversation.”

Roger Ebert&lt;/a&gt; hunts The Snark.  “When Joaquin Phoenix appears on the Letterman program and behaves as a semi-catatonic weirdo, for example, he is instantly made the butt of imitators on the Indie Spirits and the Oscars, and the snarky presumption is that he is now a laughable buffoon. All memories of his splendid acting career are erased. He is past his sell-by date. The actor from &lt;i&gt;Gladiator&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Walk the Line&lt;/i&gt;, twice nominated for an Oscar, is now ridiculed on the Academy stage.  Let&amp;#39;s take him as a case study. When Phoenix was satirized on the Indie Spirits, I doubted anything on the Oscarcast was likely to equal it. The next day I wrote that the Oscar had proven me wrong. There was no hint that I objected to the portrayals. Those second thoughts arrived only belatedly, along with the reflection that if Phoenix really was ‘nutzoid,’ the segments were in poor taste. But &lt;i&gt;nutzoid&lt;/i&gt; itself is snarkspeak, and I should have written ‘mentally ill,’ not to be Politically Correct, but simply to be decent.”

Finally, this week’s List-o-Mania comes from &lt;a href="http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/177951/top_50_movie_special_effects_shots.html" target="_blank"&gt;Den of Geek&lt;/a&gt;, which looks at the Top 50 Movie Special Effects Shots, including “the party crashers revealed” from &lt;i&gt;The Fearless Vampire Killers&lt;/i&gt;.  “Sometimes the oldest trick in the book is all you need. Thus reasoned Roman Polanski when his vampire-movie spoof required that the &amp;#39;infiltrators&amp;#39; at a vampire ball be revealed as the only reflections in the ballroom mirror. Of course, the &amp;#39;reflections&amp;#39; are out-of-focus doubles trying to &amp;#39;mirror&amp;#39; principals Jack MacGowran, Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate, but once something works, anything more is pointless.”

As our heroic Oscar show live-bloggers pointed out, the Academy Awards broadcast did clear up one pressing question: more than a week after &lt;a href="http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/towerticker/2009/02/joaquin-phoenixs-letterman-interview-flames-out.html"&gt;Joaquin Phoenix&amp;#39;s bizarre, bearded appearance on the David Letterman show,&lt;/a&gt; it&amp;#39;s still open season on the actor turned rapper. This is kind of s shame, if only because &lt;a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/online/wolcott/2009/02/look-whether-it-was-a.html"&gt;James Wolcott seems to have been proven right&lt;/a&gt; in his speculation that all the slack-jawed fascination Phoenix inspired in his few minutes on Dave&amp;#39;s couch has come at the price of a lack of serious attention and box office for the movie he was ostensibly promoting, &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2009/02/10/review-quot-two-lovers-quot.aspx"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, his latest collaboration with &lt;a href="http://nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2009/02/13/screengrab-q-amp-a-james-gray-and-quot-two-lovers-quot.aspx"&gt;writer-director James Gray.&lt;/a&gt; Still unanswered, though, is the question of whether Phoenix is genuinely flaking out publicly (or worse), or if, as has been suggested, he&amp;#39;s engaged in some Andy Kaufman-style prank or long-term &lt;i&gt;Borat&lt;/i&gt;-type project. Though for some of us watching, the appearance summoned up not thoughts of either Sacha Baron Cohen or Latka&amp;#39;s creator but Crispin Glover. If that&amp;#39;s the role model that Phoenix meant to invoke, he&amp;#39;s a rare bird indeed.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Glover&amp;#39;s turn in the spotlight came in the summer of 1987, when he was supposed to be promoting Tim Hunter&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;River&amp;#39;s Edge&lt;/i&gt;, the tragic-teen melodrama in which he had his biggest movie role to date. (Up to that time, he was best known for having played Michael J. Fox&amp;#39;s father in &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt;.) Glover&amp;#39;s freakish, hand-waving  performance in &lt;i&gt;River&amp;#39;s Edge&lt;/i&gt; garnered mixed reviews at best, and it helped create a climate in which the still relatively little-known actor was widely perceived as something of an oddball. Even so, his Letterman appearance exceeded even the most baroque expectations. Acting as if he were about to keel over from anthrax, Glover boogied out onstage in thrift-shop clothing, platform shoes, and a fright wig, and began to frantically stammer about how the jackals in the media were writing about him as if he were some kind of weirdo. Apparently incited to demonstrate what a normal fellow he was by some girls in the audience who called out, &amp;quot;Nice shoes!&amp;quot;, Glover made a muscle, invited his host to arm wrestle, then leaped up to demonstrate his ability to kick as high as the seated Letterman&amp;#39;s head. He did in fact, kick very close to Letterman&amp;#39;s head, which seemed to be the cue Dave was looking for to announce that their revels now were ended.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
In those pre-Internet days, word of what had gone down spread rapidly across college campuses, in some cases with VCR-recorded evidence that was disseminated with what we used to call &amp;quot;tape trees.&amp;quot; (And I wore an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time.) Word was slow to get out that Glover was playing a character, Rubin, who would eventually be the focus of a barely seen feature film, 1991&amp;#39;s &lt;a href="http://www.echocave.net/rubin_ed.html"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Rubin and Ed&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, co-starring Howard Hessman and directed by Trent Harris (&lt;i&gt;The Beaver Trilogy&lt;/i&gt;). This explanation fails to explain how Glover thought anyone not privy to this information could have been expected to watch him unravel with anything other than open-mouthed bewilderment, or why he thought that the notoriously crankly control freak Letterman would be delighted to watch him melt down on his time and feel the draft from his oversized clodhoppers tickle the side of his face. 
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Coupled with his work in &lt;i&gt;River&amp;#39;s Edge&lt;/i&gt;, the Letterman show appearance cemented the direction of Glover&amp;#39;s acting career, which is to say that it officially redefined him as an unvarying token of sheer weirdness. (His subsequent failure to appear in the sequel to &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt;, which he followed up by suing the filmmakers for violating his &amp;quot;image&amp;quot; by having the actor who replaced him made up to resemble him, also earned him the reputation of a weirdo who was hard to deal with.) By the time of his cameo in &lt;i&gt;Wild at Heart&lt;/i&gt;, Glover was seen as the sort of person David Lynch shoehorns into a movie if he&amp;#39;s afraid that it might not be strange &lt;i&gt;enough.&lt;/i&gt; Although Glover&amp;#39;s few opportunities to play a relatively normal person, in mostly small roles in such films as John Boorman&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Where the Heart Is&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;What&amp;#39;s Eating Gilbert Grape?&lt;/i&gt; have shown him to be a capable actor with a surprisingly sweet screen presence, his biggest roles and ripest paydays have been for flaunting his geek-show side in such films as &lt;i&gt;Charlie&amp;#39;s Angels, Bartleby&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Willard&lt;/i&gt;. (More recently, he reunited with the director of &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt;, Robert Zemeckis, to incarnate the title role in &lt;i&gt;Beowulf.&lt;/i&gt;) A well-established young actor with a string of successes to his credit, Phoenix will not be so easily pigeonholed. At this point, most people would be relieved to hear that he&amp;#39;s having a laugh, even if he did throw a labor of love movie under the bus in the procession, and after a shave, the industry would welcome him back with welcome if wary arms. But &lt;i&gt;is&lt;/i&gt; he kidding? It&amp;#39;s a dubious sort of joke that serves to turn you into a punchline for Ben Stiller&amp;#39;s use. As a director, James Gray is an old-school anachronism, not only because of his fondness for straightforward genre mechanisms but, just as crucially, for his dedication to melodramatic sincerity. That quality takes center-screen in &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt;, a romance whose earnestness borders on the creaky yet has a way of creeping under one’s skin, crowding out any minor concerns about the stolidity of its love-triangle narrative. As in &lt;i&gt;The Yards&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;We Own the Night&lt;/i&gt;, Gray’s latest benefits from an impeccable sense of place, in this case modern-day Brooklyn, whose windy chill, intimacy and ethnic character all lend warm, comfortable authenticity to the tale of Leonard (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of a Jewish dry cleaner back living with his parents after having been left by his fiancé and committed, post-suicide attempt, to a mental hospital. Leonard’s downcast eyes and penchant for mumbled monosyllabic utterances express a damaged soul but Phoenix, acutely in tune with Gray’s depiction of his milieu (in this, his third collaboration with the director), refuses to reduce his indecisive protagonist to simply the walking wounded. Playfulness flirting around the corners of his eyes and mouth, and immature stubbornness lurking underneath his surface hesitancy, Leonard is a man hurt but not hopeless, his spirit – as evidenced by a supremely evocative opening wannabe-fatal dive off a pier – scarred but not irrevocably so.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Unable to off himself, Leonard returns home to a dad (Moni Moshonov) concerned and a mom (Isabella Rossellini) on pins and needles, as well as two women who waltz into his life and provide &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt; with its title. The first is Sandra (Vinessa Shaw), whom Leonard’s parents set him up with in a fairly transparent effort to solidify a business deal with Sandra’s father. Brunette, sensible and nurturing, she’s the smart choice, which would make her &lt;i&gt;the&lt;/i&gt; choice for Leonard if not for the appearance of Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow), a striking blonde with thorny issues – a bothersome father, a drug addiction, a relationship with a married lawyer colleague (Elias Koteas) who pays for her apartment in Leonard’s parents’ building – that strike a chord with troubled Leonard. They’re yin-yang mother-lover poles, a dichotomy whose schematism would be vexing if not for the passion, as well as the sober rationalism, with which Gray dramatizes the scenario. Not once does the director treat his material with anything less than heartfelt intensity free of winks, nudges or concessions to overblown hysterics. Instead he focuses so intently on character details (such as Leonard’s idiosyncratic habit of counting train cars as they approach a station) and setting (the blustery cold of an apartment building rooftop, the euphoric, sizzling-color energy of a club, all captured in beautifully unfussy, classical widescreen) that the gradual development and resolution of the plot seems not rote but fervent, prickly, alive.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Conscious that Sandra is maternal and reliable (“I want to take care of you” she tells him over lunch), and incapable of squelching his uncontrollable ardor for Michelle, Leonard ensnares himself in a situation that must, inevitably, lead to a choice between following his head and his heart, between remaining in his socioeconomic class or venturing outside it, between embracing home or plunging headfirst into the wild, vast unknown. Emboldened by performances – Phoenix needy and reckless, Shaw invitingly anodyne, Paltrow desperate and messily desirable – whose unaffectedness obliterates the roles’ conventionality, the passionate &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt; eventually sides with its protagonist’s more imprudent impulses. However, if Gray’s film is romantic, it’s not of a comforting sort, miring itself in the implacable irrationality of desire, and the self-destruction that it can wreak. Barreling forward, engagement ring in pocket, to a final decision, Leonard is cast as a man in thrall to emotions over which he has no reign, and in his helplessness – and his decision to follow said feelings through to their risky conclusion – Gray finds as much sorrow as bliss. &lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;I consider myself a fan of the films of James Gray, unlike the majority of American critics, who are pretty lukewarm about his work. So naturally, I’m pretty eager to see his latest film, in which he steps outside the cops’n’robbers milieu for the first time in his career to make, of all things, a love story. But this being Gray, the film looks to be more downbeat and steeped in a New York seventies-era sensibility than most films of this sort. One thing I find especially striking in this trailer is the simple sincerity of the dialogue- unlike many big-screen lovers, who seem to be so idealized they’re scarcely believable as people, I have no trouble recognizing the characters I see here. He pioneered a very specific breed of indie filmmaking before it even had a name, but his forays into mainstream cinema have alternated between clever successes and embarrassing failures.&amp;nbsp; He gives some of the oddest interviews in Hollywood (compared to him, David Lynch is a downright pedestrian chit-chatter), and he&amp;#39;s as dedicated to constant reinvention -- or at least refinement -- as anyone in the industry.&amp;nbsp; And his career would seem downright schizophrenic if it weren&amp;#39;t so marked by intensely personal qualities; he&amp;#39;s done everything from big, Oscar-baiting biopics (such as &lt;i&gt;Milk&lt;/i&gt;, his take on the rise and demise of openly gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk) to small, artsy, improvised tales with almost no commercial potential.&amp;nbsp; He&amp;#39;s equally capable of having his characters spout unadulterated Shakespeare and having them say nothing at all for endless minutes of screen time, and make both choices seem perfectly natural.&amp;nbsp; He has a curiously critical eye towards his own work -- that is to say, it&amp;#39;s not curious that he is self-critical, but rather it&amp;#39;s curious how much he talks like a film critic; many of his longer discussions with journalists have sounded more like a well-informed film critic discussing Gus Van Sant&amp;#39;s work than it does a director talking about himself.&amp;nbsp; His stabs at mainstream credibility have yielded decidedly mixed results; his successes have been noteworthy (see below), but his failures, especially flattened-out duds like &lt;i&gt;Finding Forrester &lt;/i&gt;and &lt;i&gt;Good Will Hunting&lt;/i&gt;, and an utterly pointless remake of &lt;i&gt;Psycho&lt;/i&gt;, have been spectacular.&amp;nbsp; Through it all, he&amp;#39;s remained one of the film industry&amp;#39;s hardest men to figure out, but it seems no one ever tires of watching what his next move will be.&amp;nbsp; Here&amp;#39;s five of our favorites by the Prince of Portland. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO&lt;/i&gt; (1991)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Mala Noche&lt;/i&gt; was the movie that made the underground sit up and take notice of Gus Van Sant&amp;#39;s talent; &lt;i&gt;Drugstore Cowboy&lt;/i&gt; won over the burgeoning indie world and made him a critic&amp;#39;s darling.&amp;nbsp; But the daring, explosively risky &lt;i&gt;My Own Private Idaho&lt;/i&gt; was the movie that convinced me that I was seeing the work of an American genius in the making.&amp;nbsp; The story of two sad, sincere male hustlers (played by River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves), it blended elements of Shakespearean drama, class warfare, transgressive queen cinema, and pure street poetry in a way that so clearly shouldn&amp;#39;t have worked that it&amp;#39;s downright amazing how well it did.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Van Sant crammed the movie with real characters from his beloved Portland and made an intensely personal film that nonetheless hit everyone who saw it right where they lived. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;TO DIE FOR&lt;/i&gt; (1995)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Gus Van Sant&amp;#39;s first stab at commercial credibility was &lt;i&gt;Even Cowgirls Get the Blues&lt;/i&gt;, which, despite a plethora of good intentions, was his first major dud.&amp;nbsp; In fact, its ineptness in spite of itself might be noted as a pattern that the director would follow in much of his mainstream work, if it wasn&amp;#39;t for the existence of his follow-up film, &lt;i&gt;To Die For&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Working from Buck Henry&amp;#39;s sharpest, nastiest script in decades, Van Sant directs a movie that almost invisibly echoes some of the themes of his previous work, especially in those scenes featuring lovestruck, dimwitted local teen Joaquin Phoenix and his crew.&amp;nbsp; Van Sant rarely overreaches, and manages to let the black comedic tone of the script do its work; his greatest accomplishment is to get a truly memorable performance out of Nicole Kidman, who&amp;#39;s better here than she would be again for some time. &amp;nbsp; &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;GERRY&lt;/i&gt; (2002)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;In 2002, Van Sant was on the tail end of a bad time.&amp;nbsp; Hollywood hadn&amp;#39;t been good to him over the previous half-decade, but to be fair, he hadn&amp;#39;t been very good to it, either, with &lt;i&gt;Good Will Hunting, Psycho&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Finding Forrester&lt;/i&gt; gunking up his resume.&amp;nbsp; Returning to his strange interiors for another shot at indie filmmaking, he released the first of his &amp;quot;Death Trilogy&amp;quot;, the underrated &lt;i&gt;Gerry&lt;/i&gt;, and a lot of critics were ready to call it his fourth disaster in a row:&amp;nbsp; it&amp;#39;s static to the point of tedium, its improvised dialogue (by two actors not especially beloved by highbrow reviewers) was sometimes silly and sometimes impenetrable, and it had nothing resembling a plot.&amp;nbsp; But &lt;i&gt;Gerry&lt;/i&gt; was a quiet triumph, a movie that builds almost unnoticably and marks a return to greatness by a director who can do very much with very little. &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/12/01-07/elephant.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/12/01-07/elephant.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ELEPHANT&lt;/i&gt; (2003)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Van Sant followed up the surprising and effective &lt;i&gt;Gerry&lt;/i&gt; with the triumphant &lt;i&gt;Elephant&lt;/i&gt;, the best film of 2003.&amp;nbsp; The second of his death trilogy takes an almost transcendently naturalistic look at a small high school on the day of a Columbine-style murder spree; the dialogue, again largely improvised, and the endless, unintrusive tracking shots make &lt;i&gt;Elephant &lt;/i&gt;a brilliant contradiction:&amp;nbsp; a movie so banal that it&amp;#39;s almost mystical.&amp;nbsp; Through the whole event, from boring ordinariness to life-shattering violence, Van Sant&amp;#39;s particular genius is to steadfastly refuse to lead the viewers to anything resembling an explanation for the horror.&amp;nbsp; Forcing us to view everything from the eyes of those who don&amp;#39;t understand why they have to die, &lt;i&gt;Elephant &lt;/i&gt;reflects our own maddening desire to have random violence made explicable -- and the world&amp;#39;s refusal to comply. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;PARANOID PARK&lt;/i&gt; (2007)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;A strangely stirring and deeply affecting film, 2007&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Paranoid Park &lt;/i&gt;-- based largely on a successful young adult novel -- finds Gus Van Sant returning to Portland and making a key transition from the relentlessly bleak indie sensibilities of the Death Trilogy to the artsy mainstream appeal of &lt;i&gt;Milk&lt;/i&gt;. Once again trusting an amateur cast (many of whom were recruited off of MySpace) and a good deal of improvised dialogue to carry the tone of the film, Van Sant also lays in a heavy, dark directorial touch that nails the mood of the story perfectly.&amp;nbsp; He&amp;#39;s greatly aided in this attempt by the gorgeous cinematography by Wong Kar-Wai&amp;#39;s cameraman, Christopher Doyle, and the Zoo-York-clad Gabe Nevins as the affectless skateboarding protagonist.&amp;nbsp; With Halloween falling on a Friday this year, you’d think those savvy Hollywood moguls would have lined up the scary movies in order to capitalize.  But unless your idea of terror is Seth Rogen humping Elizabeth Banks (and it may well be), that didn’t happen.  Consquently, &lt;i&gt;High School Musical 3: Senior Year&lt;/i&gt; retained its hold on the top spot, adding $15 million to its total haul of $61.8 million.  This means we can look forward to either &lt;i&gt;College Musical &lt;/i&gt;or &lt;i&gt;High School Musical 4: We All Flunked!&lt;/i&gt;  &lt;i&gt;Zack and Miri Make a Porno&lt;/i&gt; took second place with $10.7 million, while the one horror holdover from last week, &lt;i&gt;Saw V&lt;/i&gt;, finished third with $10.1 million.  Guy Ritchie’s &lt;i&gt;RocknRolla&lt;/i&gt; failed to rock, taking in a dismal $1.8 million in its first weekend of wide release.

We doubted it would ever happen, but shooting has started on the sequel to &lt;i&gt;Boondock Saints &lt;/i&gt;in Toronto.  “Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus are reprising their roles as the crusading fraternal twins Connor and Murphy MacManus, who seek revenge on the tough Boston underworld. Billy Connolly is also returning as Poppa M,” per &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i63073cda9189a10c516ed9ea6f0c18ed" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Hollywood Reporter&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  And yes, enfant really, really terrible Troy Duffy is back in the director’s chair.  &lt;i&gt;Overnight II&lt;/i&gt;, anyone?

And from the “get that man a urine test” file, Joaquin Phoenix has announced his retirement from acting.  Per &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117995132.html?categoryid=13&amp;amp;cs=1" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, “The words ‘Good Bye’ were penned on the actor&amp;#39;s knuckles at a premiere Saturday night for his latest film, &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt;, and Phoenix confirmed a surprise announcement he made last week: He&amp;#39;s giving up movies.”  Phoenix will now concentrate on his music career.  I’ve got summer 2011 in the Screengrab comeback pool.

But while &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/23/cannes-announces-2008-slate-film-nerds-breathe-sigh-of-relief.aspx"&gt;there was plenty on that list to get excited about&lt;/a&gt;, it seems they weren&amp;#39;t finished, as today they announced three more selections in the official Competition lineup.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
True to form, one of the latecomers was a French entry, and it proved to be a pretty interesting choice:  &lt;i&gt;Entre les murs&lt;/i&gt;, the latest film by celebrated filmmaker Laurent Cantet, whose previous works included the 2000 film &lt;i&gt;Time Out&lt;/i&gt;.  Another American film was added today as well- &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt;, the latest from &lt;i&gt;We Own the Night&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s James Gray, a Cannes favorite.  &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt;, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow, is said to be a romance, making it something of a change of pace for Gray, who has to date specialized in crime stories.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
But the big news today was the announcement of this year&amp;#39;s opening-night film, Fernando Meirelles&amp;#39; &lt;i&gt;Blindness&lt;/i&gt;.  The film, which stars Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, will screen in competition, with its pedigree the hope is that it improves on the dicey precedent set by recent Cannes openers such as &lt;i&gt;Fanfan la Tulipe&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Da Vinci Code&lt;/i&gt;.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Added out of competition was the opener of the festival&amp;#39;s Un Certain Regard sidebar, &lt;i&gt;Hunger&lt;/i&gt;, directed by Steve McQueen (no, not that one).  Finally, the closing film of the festival was officially announced as being Barry Levinson&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;What Just Happened?&lt;/i&gt;.  Sadly, this star-studded film (the cast includes Robert DeNiro, Bruce Willis, and Robin Wright Penn) is a Hollywood satire, not a big-screen adaptation of the long-forgotten sitcom &lt;i&gt;Wha&amp;#39;Happened?&lt;/i&gt;.  So all you Mike LaFontaine fans in the audience will be sorely disappointed.

But wait, there&amp;#39;s more!  Two more names were added to the Official Competition Jury (&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/24/cannes-2008-meet-the-jury.aspx"&gt;also announced last week&lt;/a&gt;), which brings the jury up to nine members.  The additions were French actress Jeanne Balibar (who worked with fellow jury member Sergio Castellitto in &lt;i&gt;Va Savoir&lt;/i&gt;)...

Actually, I’ve got to give it up to our esteemed peers over at Entertainment Weekly because this is a pretty nice overview of dastardly personae in movies. It starts off on the wrong foot. Darth Vader? Darth Vader ceased being imposing the moment he made an effeminate, golden robot. Then Leatherface, which is acceptable but come on. The bad guy in a movie called &lt;i&gt;The Texas Chainsaw Massacre&lt;/i&gt; isn’t an exciting entry! The list kicks into gear when it starts reaching further into the past and gets unpredictable. For example, I had forgotten about the Child Catcher from &lt;i&gt;Chitty Chitty Bang Bang&lt;/i&gt; altogether and now I’m going to spend the rest of today reliving childhood trauma. And Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus in &lt;i&gt;Gladiator &lt;/i&gt;comes out of nowhere. What an inspired choice! He’s a bad guy so icky he makes horrific Gene Simmons-tongue faces while watching other dudes kill each other and then tries to impregnate his sister. It’s no &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/03/20/the-ten-best-homicial-duos-in-movies-part-1.aspx"&gt;Ten Best&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/03/20/the-ten-best-murderous-duos-in-movies-part-2.aspx"&gt;Murderous Duos&lt;/a&gt; but, hey, what is?

But if nothing else, it can lay claim to at least one comedy sequence for the ages, even while it&amp;#39;s so raunchy it would&amp;#39;ve made Curly Howard blush. In the scene, Seth (Jonah Hill) confesses to his best friend Evan (Michael Cera) his longstanding compulsion to draw penises. Of course, Evan has a hard time believing it (2007&amp;#39;s funniest line in a walk: &amp;quot;Dicks? Like a man dick?&amp;quot;) but the wonder of the scene is that Hill plays it completely straight. Seth is clearly ashamed of himself, angered by the trouble it&amp;#39;s brought him, and annoyed that no one seems to understand his plight. In addition, screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (note the first names) make the details in the scene so specific that I wouldn&amp;#39;t be surprised if it wasn&amp;#39;t drawn from real life. Which, of course, only makes it that much funnier. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Chase in the rain, &lt;i&gt;We Own the Night&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JbQTLcHNIG8&amp;amp;rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A lot of people would claim that the chase sequence at the end of Quentin Tarantino&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Death Proof&lt;/i&gt; is the year&amp;#39;s best action scene, but I&amp;#39;d go to the mat instead for James Gray&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;We Own the Night&lt;/i&gt;. Tarantino&amp;#39;s was well-choreographed and nicely sustained to be sure, but it couldn&amp;#39;t match the pure visceral impact of Gray&amp;#39;s. For one thing, there&amp;#39;s real urgency in the scene- Joaquin Phoenix&amp;#39;s Bobby has just learned that his former Russian mob associates have not only figured out where he&amp;#39;s hiding but are planning to kill his police chief dad, and he&amp;#39;s racing through the rain to stop this from happening. In addition, the direction is almost unbearably tense, as Gray shoots the scene entirely from inside Phoenix&amp;#39;s car, with brutal violence glimpsed through his windshield as the wiper blades whoosh back and forth. Gray has never been known as an action director, but he shows a gift for it here, which makes me all the more grateful that he&amp;#39;s refused to sell his talents short by making a string of mediocre thrillers. Instead, he&amp;#39;s done his own thing so far, and although his three films haven&amp;#39;t won him a mass audience like Tarantino, he&amp;#39;s remained an interesting filmmaker in his own right, and &lt;i&gt;We Own the Night&lt;/i&gt; is his best film to date. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Little Anton Ego, &lt;i&gt;Ratatouille&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DL34SzgpZLM&amp;amp;rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By now most of us expect greatness from Pixar, especially when Brad Bird is directing, but like any truly great filmmaker, Bird is still capable of surprising us with his talent. Nowhere in &lt;i&gt;Ratatouille&lt;/i&gt; is this more true than a scene near the end of the film where the dreaded food critic Anton Ego (the inimitable Peter O&amp;#39;Toole) drops in at Gusteau&amp;#39;s to review the food prepared by its celebrated new chef, Remy, a rat voiced by Patton Oswalt. Counter to popular logic, Remy serves him the relatively low-class dish ratatouille, the quality of which blindsides Ego so much that he briefly flashes back to the meals of his childhood. The beauty of the moment owes largely to its brevity, as Bird executes the flashback so suddenly and in so few brush strokes that it blindsided me with its simple perfection.
