And don’t think the studios don’t know it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;DVD of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; The cream of this week’s DVD releases looks to be the snazzy new Criterion edition of Gregory Nava’s breakthrough film &lt;i&gt;El Norte&lt;/i&gt;. This lovely mini-epic about a pair of Guatemalan refugees venturing north to America, Nava’s film told a too-common story that hadn’t been successfully dramatized in movies before. Shooting the film largely on the fly, Nava and his wife/collaborator Anna Thomas helped to kick-start the American independent film movement by redefining the sorts of movies could be made with limited means. Both the standard edition and the Blu-Ray edition include a new commentary track by Nava, interviews with Nava, Thomas, and the film’s principal actors, Nava’s 1972 student film &lt;i&gt;The Journal of Diego Rodriguez Silva&lt;/i&gt;, and more. At a time when “Sundance movies” have practically become a formula unto themselves, &lt;i&gt;El Norte&lt;/i&gt; is a reminder that independent film can be more than just a cliché.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also this week in classics is Criterion’s standard-format edition of Douglas Sirk’s &lt;i&gt;Magnificent Obsession&lt;/i&gt;, which also includes a remastered version of the 1935 John M. Stahl original. Or if you like your weepies more contemporary, there’s always &lt;i&gt;The Notebook&lt;/i&gt; Limited Edition Gift Set (Warner, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s slate of recent releases coming to DVD is headlined &lt;i&gt;Saw V&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate, also Blu-Ray), the latest entry in a series that will surely continue as long as there are people willing to come up with convoluted ways to kill off characters. Also this week: Mark Wahlberg in the video game adaptation &lt;i&gt;Max Payne&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray), the story of Heisman winner Ernie Davis in &lt;i&gt;The Express&lt;/i&gt; (Universal, also Blu-Ray), the family films &lt;i&gt;Igor&lt;/i&gt; (MGM, also Blu-Ray) and &lt;i&gt;City of Ember&lt;/i&gt; (Fox), Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in the “a white man shall free them” drama &lt;i&gt;The Children of Huang Shi&lt;/i&gt; (Sony), the cult-ready musical gorefest &lt;i&gt;Repo!: The Genetic Opera&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate, also Blu-Ray), and the direct-to-DVD horror movie &lt;i&gt;Amusement&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In TV on DVD, this week brings &lt;i&gt;The Rockford Files&lt;/i&gt; Season 6 (Universal), &lt;i&gt;Emergency!&lt;/i&gt; Season 5 (Universal), and &lt;i&gt;Moonlight&lt;/i&gt;: The Complete Series (Warner).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, this week’s Blu-Ray only titles is highlighted by the enduring classic &lt;i&gt;This Is Spinal Tap&lt;/i&gt; (MGM), in an edition that boasts all of the extras from MGM’s standard-format edition. Walt is actually in love -- painfully, head over heels in love -- with the pretty boy Johnny (Doug Cooyeate), who doesn&amp;#39;t mind putting up with his adulation so long as it gets him handouts, but has no intention of letting Walt touch him, so Walt, in a spirit of compromise that is familiar to inhabitants of the independent filmmaking scene, makes do with Johnny&amp;#39;s friend, the scruffier Ray, and takes what satisfaction he can in being one degree of separation away from his obscure object of desire. This grungy erotic fever dream of a first feature by Gus Van Sant was made for $2500.00; hard to see for most of the years before it came out on DVD as part of the Criterion Collection last fall, it was one of the most exciting directorial debuts of the 1980s and announced Portland&amp;#39;s placement on the indie film map. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;ROCK HUDSON&amp;#39;S HOME MOVIES (1992)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/06/16-22/rock_hudson_smoke_rings_leo_fuchs_583.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/06/16-22/rock_hudson_smoke_rings_leo_fuchs_583.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When Hudson died of AIDS in 1985 while still trying to remain in the closet, a number of people felt that he had missed his last chance to make his stand against the homophobes. This hilarious illustrated lecture by the experimental filmmaker Mark Rappaport argues that Rock was trying to tell us something all along; you just had to know how to listen. Rock, represented by actor Eric Farr, walks us through a series of clips from Hudson&amp;#39;s career, pointing up the suddenly obvious messages conveyed by his skittish relationships with Doris Day and his other virginal leading ladies, his verbal pas de deux with Tony Randall, the mysterious nudge-nudge wink-wink underworld inhabited by the remade men of &lt;i&gt;Seconds&lt;/i&gt;, and the shift into horror movies as Rock&amp;#39;s youthful beauty began to fade. Like certain films of Todd Haynes, the movie is a satirical commentary on certain strains of pop criticism and a cunning work of criticism itself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;SCORPIO RISING (1964) &amp;amp; UN CHANT D&amp;#39;AMOUR (1950)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cz0TY5lxrv4&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Between the two of them, these two short films, made by directors (Kenneth Anger, who made &lt;i&gt;Scorpio Rising&lt;/i&gt; five years after the best-selling success of his book &lt;i&gt;Hollywood Babylon&lt;/i&gt;, and the legendary playwright, novelist and poet Jean Genet) famous in the literary world, established a whole visual language of gay eroticism, based on fetishistic totems of power on the one hand and a defiant romantic tenderness in the face of imprisonment and institutional mistreatment on the other, that other artists have fed off for generations since. And not just gay artists:&amp;nbsp; Anger&amp;#39;s cutting to rock music paved the way for everything from Scorsese to MTV, and Oliver Stone, a director not noted for his sensitivity to homosexuals (see &lt;i&gt;JFK&lt;/i&gt;) did his own butch version of the shared-cigarette scene&amp;nbsp;from Genet&amp;#39;s film in &lt;i&gt;Platoon&lt;/i&gt;, with Willem Dafoe putting a rifle to Charlie Sheen&amp;#39;s pliant lips and giving him a little something-something. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;VELVET GOLDMINE (1998)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In his salute to the glitter rock scene of the 1970s, Haynes sets out to recreate a very different era in pop culture, one that celebrated letting it all hang out -- and he also administers a bitch slap to those who would write off the music as an opportunistic sham. Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Haynes&amp;#39; David Bowie stand-in, may ultimately sell out to arena rock and heterosexuality, but the fire he lit in the hearts and minds of young adepts such as the rock writer played by Christian Bale continues to burn even as all the color and spark has bled out of the conventional show business world he&amp;#39;s joined. &lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fdKTHL0PMGw&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back in 1972, when underground filmmaker John Waters had his starlet and muse, the 300-pound drag superstar Divine (neé Harris Glenn Milstead) eat dog shit as a glorified publicity stunt in the final moments of &lt;em&gt;Pink Flamingos&lt;/em&gt; (a.k.a. the &lt;em&gt;Citizen Kane&lt;/em&gt; of bad taste cinema), the wise-ass, openly gay, proto-punk director probably thought he was being pretty damn subversive in his blatant attempt to shock the bejesus out of the hopelessly square “straight” world he never had any particular interest in joining. Little did he know at the time that the most subversive act of pop culture would come sixteen years later, when he achieved crossover indie success with the (mostly) family friendly &lt;em&gt;Hairspray&lt;/em&gt;, starring Ricki Lake as an indomitable plus-size, racially politicized Mashed Potato enthusiast and Divine as haggard Baltimore housewife Edna Turnblad. Tragically, Divine passed on to the great Hefty Hideway in the sky just as &lt;em&gt;Hairspray&lt;/em&gt; made Waters and his Baltimore crew of “Hillbilly Rip-offs” shockingly respectable (and at least as famous as Pia Zadora)...but “the Filthiest Woman Alive” lived on (in a beautifully ironic twist &lt;em&gt;Flamingos&lt;/em&gt;’ Babs Johnson would have adored) as a beloved family-friendly icon, first as the inspiration for the under-the-sea witch Ursula in &lt;em&gt;The Little Mermaid&lt;/em&gt; and later in the gender-bender casting of Harvey Fierstein, Bruce Villanch (and, recently, George Wendt??!?!?) as Edna Turnblad in the smash hit Broadway musical version of &lt;em&gt;Hairspray&lt;/em&gt; and (egad!) John Travolta in the super-smash hit re-movie-fied 2007 version of the musical that introduced Waters’ racially and sexually egalitarian Baltimore fantasia to the &lt;em&gt;High School Musical&lt;/em&gt; crowd (thanks to that dreamy Zac Efron). Waters’ never bought into the peace &amp;amp; love banalities of the Flower Children he mocked so mercilessly in his earliest films, yet the musical &lt;em&gt;Hairspray&lt;/em&gt;’s triumphant showstopper “You Can’t Stop The Beat” rivals “The Age of Aquarius” in its joyous, unabashedly hopeful vision of a world where literally &lt;em&gt;everyone&lt;/em&gt; With &lt;i&gt;Control&lt;/i&gt;, Anton Corbijn’s celebrated directorial debut, opening this weekend, we’ll get to see how the movies do with the compellingly tragic story of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis; his cult status, enigmatic qualities and spectacular suicide would seem to make him an ideal candidate for big-screen immortality. But while we wait for this and Todd Haynes’ Dylan biopic &lt;i&gt;I’m Not There&lt;/i&gt; to hit our local screens, we can always immerse ourselves in previous big-screen treatments of rock and rollers&amp;nbsp;— both real and imaginary&amp;nbsp;— that Hollywood has brought us. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY&lt;/i&gt; (1978)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It wasn’t really until the 1970s that Hollywood came to terms with the idea that rock music wasn’t some passing fad (check out, oh, say, any movie about rock &amp;#39;n&amp;#39; roll made during the 1960s as evidence), but they figured out quickly enough that the best rock star was a dead rock star. The first truly successful rock biopic wasn’t really the stuff of Hollywood legend&amp;nbsp;— it played awfully fast and loose with the historical facts, and its script set a hokey, faux-spiritual tone that a lot of later movies would follow&amp;nbsp;— but it’s worth watching for a standout lead performance as the chief Cricket by a pre-laughingstock Gary Busey, and excellent supporting roles by Charles Martin Smith and Conrad Janis. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;SID AND NANCY&lt;/i&gt; (1986)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Very few people were in as good a position to make the quintessential punk-rock biopic than Alex Cox. He’d already proven with &lt;i&gt;Repo Man&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;that he was probably the only director of the 1980s who really understood punk-rock music, and with &lt;i&gt;Sid and Nancy&lt;/i&gt;, he managed to strike just the right tone of empathy and tragedy. Gary Oldman, who&amp;#39;d go on to have a stellar career, does a fantastic job playing the born-to-die hellraiser Sid Vicious; Chloe Webb, who wouldn’t, is equally fantastic as the doomed Nancy Spungeon. A depressing but essential rock &amp;#39;n&amp;#39; roll biography. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;em&gt;WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/i&gt; (1993)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Falling into a lot of the same traps as &lt;i&gt;The Buddy Holly Story&lt;/i&gt; (and, for that matter, a hundred other rock biographies), this look at the surprising career arc of Tina Turner falls into the trap of beatifying its subject&amp;nbsp;— not surprising, given that it’s based on her own autobiography. It also spends so much time demonizing Ike Turner as an abusive monster (which he was) that it doesn’t really convey the sense of him as a musical genius (which he also was). Still, it’s redeemed by winning performances in the lead roles by Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. Ike’s own autobiography remains unfilmed. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BACKBEAT&lt;/i&gt; (1994)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Possibly due to the notoriously litigious nature of the surviving members of the band, Hollywood has always had a standoffish approach to telling stories about the life and times of the biggest rock band in history. Maybe it’s because of the approach this nearly forgotten independent flick took towards the development of the Beatles that it managed to succeed on its own terms. Telling the story of the early days of the band and focusing on the forgotten Stu Sutcliffe, it’s by turns hokey and transcendent, and manages like few films before or since to make something fresh out of one of the most-told stories in pop music history. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;VELVET GOLDMINE&lt;/i&gt; (1998)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Todd Haynes’ underappreciated interpretation of the glam rock era doesn’t name any names&amp;nbsp;— it doesn’t have to. We all know that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is playing a veiled version of the chameleonoid David Bowie, and that a magnetically sexy Ewan McGregor is an amalgam of Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain. And, in a way, the approach couldn’t be more fitting&amp;nbsp;— the glam era was all about radical reinvention, fluctuating identities, and sexual ambiguity, and that’s what Haynes delivers in spades, along with a healthy dose of political paranoia, divine mystery and straight-up rock and roll fun. &lt;/p&gt;
