&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sandy McCallum as Mr. President/David Carradine as President Frankenstein, DEATH RACE 2000 (1975)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In many ways, Sandy McCallum&amp;#39;s &amp;quot;Mr. President&amp;quot; in the sci-fi satire &lt;em&gt;Death Race 2000&lt;/em&gt; was a political leader far ahead of his time. He was a charismatic evangelical in tune with the religious right (he began all his presidential addresses with the line &amp;quot;My children, whom I love&amp;quot;); he remained sequestered in his vacation home even in times of crisis (what is Mr. President&amp;#39;s fabled Winter Palace in Beijing but a slightly more grandiose version of the big ranch in Crawford?), and most importantly, he struck home with the American people by isolating and identifying the sole cause of all our national woes, foreign and domestic: the hated French! Still, every great leader&amp;#39;s time must eventually pass, and when Mr. President finally lost his life in a freak automotive accident, his successor (likewise ahead of the curve: a popular athlete who parlayed his celebrity status into a career in politics), the wonderfully named President Frankenstein, took over. At first, America was worried — the new president, with his outspoken First Lady and his program of progressive reform, seemed like he might be some sort of bleeding-heart liberal — but our minds were eased when his first official act in office was to run over pesky news media personality Junior Bruce with his car. America loves you, President Frankenstein!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Jeff Bridges as President Jackson Evans, THE CONTENDER (2000)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;President Evans is a supporting character in this dull message movie about the trouble his female vice-presidential nominee (Joan Allen) has in getting approved, but he&amp;#39;s also the movie&amp;#39;s wild card, a slick charmer who isn&amp;#39;t actively opposed to doing the right thing whenever possible but mostly seems interested in winning with a minimum of confrontational hassle. His hobby is torturing the staff of the White House kitchen by testing their ability to serve him anything he asks for at any hour of the day; at one point he&amp;#39;s spotted wandering the halls and ignoring the person talking to him while munching his latest snack and muttering, &amp;quot;Shark steak. Fuckin&amp;#39; shark steak sandwich. . .&amp;quot; &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Henry Fonda as The President, FAIL-SAFE (1964)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This grim melodrama, in which American bombers nuke Moscow because of a technical error, opened some ten months after &lt;em&gt;Dr. Strangelove&lt;/em&gt;, an unusual&amp;nbsp;case of the straight version of a story coming after the parody. Actually, this version is fairly funny if you watch it now in the wrong spirit. The nameless president winds up averting World War III by ordering a nuclear strike on New York City to make it up to the Russians, even though the First Lady happens to be in the Big Apple. The movie also came out the same year as &lt;em&gt;The Best Man&lt;/em&gt;, in which Fonda played a presidential candidate too pure in heart to develop the killer instinct needed for the job. Fifteen years later he would play the U.S. president again, this time in the disaster movie &lt;em&gt;Meteor&lt;/em&gt;. (And let&amp;#39;s not forget that one of his early roles was as Young Abe Lincoln in the John Ford classic.) Maybe the real question posed by &lt;em&gt;Fail-Safe&lt;/em&gt; is, if Hollywood is such a bastion of liberal bias, then how come every time Fonda, the movie star known as the embodiment of liberal humanism, got cast as the leader of the free world, half the planet wound up in danger of obliteration? &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Franchot Tone as The President, ADVISE AND CONSENT (1962)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When Otto Preminger&amp;#39;s Washington melodrama opened, &lt;em&gt;New York Times&lt;/em&gt; reviewer Bosley Crowther glowered at it through his lorgnette and wrote that the filmmakers&amp;#39; &amp;quot;intense and deliberate projection of a cynical attitude toward the actions of politicians extends right up to the President of the United States, whom they frankly portray in this fiction as a man of peculiar principles. He is made (in a tasteless portrayal of a sick, testy man by Franchot Tone) to be tolerant of cheap conniving and the telling of lies under oath.&amp;quot; Translated into English, this means that Tone&amp;#39;s character is one of the few movie presidents one can imagine actually running the country, a tough, hard-bitten old son of a bitch who knows how to play the game. Unfortunately, we all have our bad days, and he comes to grief after he makes the mistake of trying to appoint&amp;nbsp;— it&amp;#39;s him again!&amp;nbsp;— Henry Fonda as Secretary of State. Tone&amp;#39;s president, worn out from political machinations and Fonda&amp;#39;s high-minded dithering, ultimately succumbs to a heart attack, leaving the country in the hands of his vice-president, Lew Ayres, who makes Hank Fonda look like Solomon crossed with Sean Connery.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Bill Pullman as President Thomas J. Whitmore, INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996) and Gene Hackman as President Alan Richmond, ABSOLUTE POWER (1997)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Taken together, these two films, originally released a little more than six months apart, go a long way towards summing up the Clinton presidency as it was filtered through different fantasy lenses in the popular culture of its time. Pullman&amp;#39;s president is, like President Bartlett on &lt;i&gt;The West Wing&lt;/i&gt;, a fantasy of an improved Bill Clinton, the Clinton that some disappointed observers wanted him to be: a sensitive liberal-minded family man, but with a record of military heroism (in the first Gulf War) and the ability to keep his dick in his pants. When the movie opens, he&amp;#39;s struggling to keep his job as the media and his political enemies&amp;nbsp;paint him as spineless and ineffectual, but the extraterrestrial invasion gives him the chance to show what he&amp;#39;s made of: he dusts off his flight suit and kicks a little alien butt, albeit only after the destruction of the White House and the death of his First Lady. (She&amp;#39;s played by Mary McDonnell, who wound up getting her own TV presidency after &lt;i&gt;robots&lt;/i&gt; took their turn trying to wipe out the human race on &lt;i&gt;Battlestar Galactica.&lt;/i&gt;) President Richmond represents Clinton the defiler, the rampaging amoral deviant unfit for polite society, let alone high office; the film&amp;#39;s director-star, Clint Eastwood, has to take matters into his own hands and bring about justice after he&amp;#39;s seen Richmond&amp;#39;s Secret Service bodyguards kill a woman who was trying to defend herself from a violent sexual assault at POTUS&amp;#39;s hands. The cover-up is handled by the president&amp;#39;s evil, female chief of staff (Judy Davis), a Hillary even he couldn&amp;#39;t bring himself to marry. Oddly enough, &lt;i&gt;Absolute Power&lt;/i&gt; also laid the seeds for a future TV presidency: one of Richmond&amp;#39;s murderous goons is played by Dennis Haysbert, who later became the martyred President David Palmer on &lt;i&gt;24.&lt;/i&gt; &lt;/p&gt;

Depicting Presidents is always a dicey proposition on film. In contemporary films, there are fewer ways to take your audience out of a movie than to show the President of the United States and have it not be the actual current President of the United States (another reason why &lt;em&gt;Crimson Tide&lt;/em&gt;, with its CNN-generated Bill Clinton cameo, is so awesome). In films set in the future, it&amp;#39;s hard to show the President and have it not feel like a ham-handed attempt at instant dystopianism. (Funny how those silly people in the future rarely elect somebody halfway decent to the office.) Our list this week focuses on Great Fictional Movie Presidents. But you&amp;#39;ll notice that we&amp;#39;ve included two sorta-not-fictional Honorable Mentions. You may also notice that we&amp;#39;ve avoided some movie Presidents (coughMichaelDouglascough) who irritate the hell out of us.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Peter Sellers as President Merkin Muffley, DR. STRANGELOVE, OR, HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (1964)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Of all the roles played by Peter Sellers in Stanley Kubrick&amp;#39;s brilliant black comedy, none leaves an impression quite like President Merkin Muffley. (The dual vagina references in the name are as sure a sign as any that anarchic comic author Terry Southern was behind the screenplay.) Allegedly based on fussy Democrat Adlai Stevenson, Muffley&amp;#39;s role as the sole voice of reason and practicality in a film full of powerful madmen anchors the entire movie — and, on occasion, such as in the legendary and hilarious telephone conversation with the Soviet premier (much of which, like a good deal of Sellers&amp;#39; dialogue, was originally improvised by the actor himself), provides some of &lt;em&gt;Dr. Strangelove&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#39;s funniest moments. Muffley wasn&amp;#39;t always meant to be the film&amp;#39;s unflappable straight man; Southern originally wrote him as an extremely loopy collection of tics and affectations, including a severe head cold and an obvious and stereotypical homosexual demeanor; the former was so effective that it basically prevented anyone from playing off of him, and the latter, in rehearsal, was felt by both actor and director, to be too broad. Instead, Sellers played Muffley as almost preternaturally bland, which made his occasional forays into hysteria all the more effective. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Walter Huston as President Judson C. &amp;quot;Judd&amp;quot; Hammond, GABRIEL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE (1933)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This 1933 picture, which opened during Franklin Roosevelt&amp;#39;s first term as president, was directed by Gregory La Cava, but the real driving force behind the production was William Randolph Hearst, who intended it as a primer designed to show FDR how he ought to go about solving the country&amp;#39;s problems. President Hammond is a compromise candidate, a cynical party hack who couldn&amp;#39;t care less about his country&amp;#39;s citizens or its future. But then he&amp;#39;s injured in a car accident and slips into a coma, and when he comes out of it, he&amp;#39;s a changed man, and he rolls up his sleeves and begins to do whatever it takes to make things right. His methods include firing his whole cabinet, threatening to declare martial law until Congress lets him do whatever he wants, and having all the gangsters in the country rounded up and summarily executed. His reign of righteous terror climaxes with a scene where he gathers all the ambassadors of the world&amp;#39;s nations onto a yacht and treats them to a show of American military power that convinces them that they have no choice but to disarm and quickly fork over the money they owe the U.S. from the first World War. Having rendered the United States prosperous, crime-free and dominant, President Hammond contentedly drops dead; the movie leaves open the possibility that he&amp;#39;s been dead since the car crash and that his body has been serving as an earthly conduit for the Lord. FDR wound up being a disappointment to Hearst, not taking much from the Hammond playbook, but some historians think that the movie may have actually &lt;a href="http://www.opednews.com/mcelvaine_102104_gabriel.htm"&gt;prophesied the administration of a much later American president.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Donald Pleasance as The President of the United States, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You know, sometimes you really feel sorry for Donald Pleasance. The poor guy survived the Blitz, fought in the Second World War, and went on to become President of the United States despite the constitutional hindrance of having been born in England. And what does it get him after forty years of struggle? Some mouthy stewardess blows up Air Force One and leaves him stranded in New York (which just happens to be a maximum security penitentiary, peopled with murderers, drug lords, and assorted human scum — nothing like it is in real life, of course), where he is continually menaced by the guy who sang &amp;quot;Grazing in the Grass.&amp;quot; U.S. presidents in action movies tend to break down pretty cleanly into one of two categories — the Fightin&amp;#39; President, who punches people and shoots down alien warships, and the Frightened President, who cowers in a corner and waits for a real tough-guy he-man to come rescue him. For most of &lt;em&gt;Escape from New York&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#39;s run time, Pleasance&amp;#39;s unnamed President is decidedly the latter, and we&amp;#39;re clearly meant to feel some degree of sympathy towards him as he awaits rescue (like Nixon, he apparently has a secret plan to end the war). Still, it&amp;#39;s hard not to come away feeling a bit of sympathy for the terrorists — after all, the guy did turn Manhattan into a prison. Won&amp;#39;t somebody think of the restaurants?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Terry Crews as President Camacho, IDIOCRACY (2006)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Postponed for over a year before&amp;nbsp;getting a blink-and-you-missed-it release last fall, Mike Judge&amp;#39;s cult-classic-in-the-making imagined a future in which the morons have inherited the Earth. In a world where Starbucks sells both lattes and handjobs and crops are watered with Brawndo™ Energy Drinks, it only makes sense that the President of the United States would be a trash-talking, hard-partying ex-porn star and five-time Ultimate Smackdown Champion. President Camacho, played with great comic relish by ex-NFL defensive lineman Terry Crews, is the kind of fearless leader who sports a tank top and American-flag warmup pants at Presidential functions, brandishes a machine gun during his State of the Union address, and rides a four-wheeler everywhere he goes, national security be damned.&amp;nbsp;But his actual leadership skills are limited to making the country&amp;#39;s smartest man his new Secretary of the Interior and tasking him to solve the nation&amp;#39;s famine problem in one week, or else he&amp;#39;ll get thrown into the ring during a nationally-televised monster truck rally. A few decades ago, it might have been tempting to read Judge&amp;#39;s vision of the presidency 500 years from now as a dystopian satire conceived by a former high-school outcast sick of seeing the dumb jocks get all the glory. But nowadays, when having a significant speaking role in &lt;em&gt;Predator&lt;/em&gt; is as accurate an indicator of electability as any previous public office, one can&amp;#39;t help but wonder whether it&amp;#39;ll even take five centuries to place us squarely in the political climate imagined by &lt;em&gt;Idiocracy&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Charles Durning&amp;#39;s President Stevens&amp;nbsp;is a squat, foul-mouthed sign of the post-Nixonian times. On the one hand, it&amp;#39;s doubtful a pre-Nixon president would have been allowed to drink and curse this much on-screen: Stevens has a &amp;quot;fuck&amp;quot; for every occasion. But he&amp;#39;s also made directly responsible for&amp;nbsp;the U.S.&amp;#39;s post-Vietnam fallout, blackmailed by Burt Lancaster into promising to reveal — on national TV! — our cynical, soldier-killing true reasons for entering the war. Impressively naive, Stevens is forced to condemn the administrations preceding him: he retains Nixon&amp;#39;s profanity but none of his attitude.&lt;/p&gt;
